Hey all,

My girlfriend and I are extremely excited for the snow to melt so we can start out first garden together. I have just a few basic questions for you guys... I live in northern Minnesota were we have a shorter growing season.

I'm just wondering if there are any veggies and fruits that can do fairly well in my type of situation? I really want to grow tomatoes, beans, peppers(green, banana, and jalopeno.) mainely for pickling purposes. maybe some raspberries bushes and strawberries. These are just kinda my ideas I know tomatoes, beans, raspberries, and strawberries grow up here, bu I'm not sure about peppers maybe you guys can give me an answer.

Another question is, is gardening expensive? I'm not saying I can't afford to put a little money into my garden, but with me just buying a house and ten acres I would like to keep the cost at a minimum. Is there any ways I can avoid unnessasary spending?

Thanks guys do the help!

Put your peppers in 5 gallon buckets painted black to absorb the heat.

The Gardening section of the forum is filled with really good information. Might want to start there. Also I always recommend the book Square Foot Gardening for beginners as he covers almost everything and takes the fear/craziness out of it.

You should be starting your tomatoes and peppers already.

You start them inside under lights or in a sunny window now and transplant them into the garden after the frost cycle is over.

It really sounds like you need to do a google search of each of your intended plants just to see if it fits your growing season, soil and rainfall patterns.

Also sounds like you have purchased 10 acres of land you have no idea what to do with.

Gardening is not cheap, but it does not have to be expensive either. Just depends on how much back breaking work you are willing to do in place of spending money on machines.

My one suggestion would be, go take a walk round your neighbourhood and have a look at other folks gardens. When you find one that has a good vegetable garden, put on a big smile, knock on the door and politely mention to the owner your situation and if they have any pointers on gardening in your area. I think you guys have Local Extension Offices too? Maybe contact them, from what I hear, they run gardening and preserving courses.

This is about the best local advice you can get....you will find that most gardeners will very willingly help you out, and may make a few real good friend along the way.

You need to know your "Zone", and it will list planting times, last frost dates, length of growin season, etc....each kind of seed or plant will list lenth of season needed for a successful harvest.
In the north bucket growing is a good idea, on a small scale to start with..
You will also need to know what kind of soil you have......all sorts of ways...but a friendly conversation with a neighbor gardener will go a long way.

Yeah, knowing your zone is key. Here's a link for you.

http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/

Your local Wally World, Home Depot, Lowes or similar should have plants that are specific to your area. They are all pretty good about matching plants to zones. You can't go wrong on most plants. Just keep them weeded and watered. They know how to do the rest.

You might also want to take a soil sample into your county extension service. Just google foo "Extension Service (your county), Minnesota" and it should come up if you don't know where they are. They will tell you what, if any, amendments your soil needs for your garden.

Good luck.

The ten I acres I bought, five of it is a small field I farm, directly adjacent to my dads larger field. I bought the LAN from my dad but I know what I'm doing with it, 5 acres field, 5 acres of woods and yard.

But thanks for the advice on the tomatoes and peppers. I'll put it in good use this weekend.

5 and 5. My ideal place to retire...
You are soooooo lucky.

How big of a garden do you plan on starting with?
You say you don't want to spend a lot of money.
Do you have any skills at all in gardening?

I usually recommend to rank beginners, the first few years is to buy your tender or early plants while experimenting with growing from seed. Tenders would be tomatoes, peppers, ie anything frost susceptible. Earlies would be broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, onions, ie things that'll take a little cold.
Growing tenders and earlies from seed can be very frustrating to the beginner. Nothing sucks more than to lose your stuff to damping off or to drying out, or to the resident mouse or other rodent that may be inhabiting your growing space. You need the right light conditions to grow on good sturdy plants for setting out.

Easy seeds planted in place are peas, beans and radishes. And summer squashes.
Cukes and winter squashes/pumpkins take a bit more care as plants

If your garden plot is new, I'd recommend an early planting of peas just to get the soil going. You can spend a lot of money on fertilzers and pesticides. Or you can make friends with the people with the cow manure for fertilizer and read about companion planting to cut down on having to buy pesticides. Buy cheap cover crops and plow them under instead of using fertilizers. Learn to compost.

My answer was based on the uttlerly simplistic nature of your question!

If you know what you are doing then why are you here wasting our time?

Apparently you have not yet walked through the Wallmart, Lowes or Home Depot garden department looking at price tags and reading the back of the seed packages. The cost of everything you need can be computed and the seed packages will tell you if a plant will do well in your area, how to prepare the soil and when to plant.

You can also google "when to plant.....(whatever)" and get specific instructions from one of the thousands of seed company sites on the internet.

I turned a clay parking lot into a garden up in the Georgia Mountains two years ago. I do have some videos at youtube on that process, and information on my blog about that.
Basically, I cleared the area of gravel, then started adding layers of rotting leaves to it. I also added some soil which had been in a compost heap for several years and coffee grounds from the family coffee pot.
My snow peas didn't do well, but I figured I was adding nitrogen to the soil. I bought non-hybrid tomato plants from Walmart and put them in with great care, keeping them watered. If you're going this rout, be sure to chose "heriloom" or "heritage" plants, not hybrid, because they will reseed themselves year after year.

In the fall I turn the soil adding more organic matter. Zuchinni, yellow squash and pole beans are excellent plants for poor soil. Just water, use some miracle grow if you're not opposed to that, and plant marigolds, just for the color and to establish plants and break up the ground.

I've since moved to Yellowstone, but the guy who owns the property said the tomatoes are coming back each spring and he is enjoying them.

When ever I weeded that garden, I picked pebbles and put them in the driveway.

Multching is important to hold in the moisture, build up the soil and keep down weeds. Hope to build a garden again someday.

Good luck!

Mngravy, one of my suggestions would be to plant berry bushes of various types all along the perimeter of your land, alongside the fences if you have them. This way you have low maintenance and out-of-the-way food plants for you and the animals and birds and can use the rest of the area for other food plants. Berry bushes produce within two years of planting, usually, and will continue for many years. You could also plant hazelnut bushes in those areas. I would do that first so they get a start now. The berry bushes will also provide cover and nesting places for wildlife. I would avoid bushes that will get out of control quickly, like blackberries and wild roses, unless you have a lot of time to keep them under control...the seeds are too easily spread by birds to take over everywhere. Thimbleberries are one of my favorite bush fruits. (They look like red raspberries but taste better, IMO.) Blueberries or huckleberries, bush cherries like Hanson and Nanking are ideal for cold climates, and there are many more that do well in your climate.

I would order free catalogs from Burpee, Fields, Guerneys, Stokes, Park, etc. This gives you all the information you need to plant the best varieties of anything in your area. Asking local gardeners, as suggested before, is great, and also the county extension service in every area can give you advice. Working with the county extension office is the best thing if you have a large area to plant...no matter what gardening or farming questions you have can be answered by them. Also take several field trips around the area and see what is growing wild this spring and summer. The acid test is whether a plant can grow without regular maintenance once it is established, and wild plants of course do that. Pay close attention to the growing conditions around a wild plant...this is their ideal surroundings.

As for cost, bush fruits can be ordered as small plants in quantities of 25 or so, which may be the best way to get started. An even cheaper method is to dig up wild berry seedlings and other plants where it is legal and transplant them to your place.

You can plant peppers and other more tender plants by starting them early indoors. I suggest you also get perennials like chives that will come up year after year without much tending on your part. You can plant mints where it is okay if they spread all over the place, because they will. Asparagus, strawberries, Jerusalem artichoke, or rhubarb will also come back from year to year. On your 10 acres, you will be busy with other things too, so whatever you can do to cut your labor and time down will be very welcome...most perennials will do that. Google the growing conditions necessary for the ones you want to plant. The most important thing is to start them off right. Mulching in the fall will help protect the perennials from deep frost and this mulch will also improve your soil tilth eventually.

There are many wild food plants, and some of them will be growing on your 10 acres. I would allow them to grow and spread. A good ID book for your area will be valuable this spring when things start blossoming out. These are free plants that often give more nutrients than anything else you can plant on that same acreage, and again, no labor or time on your part in making them grow. Take advantage of what God has already planted for you!

I'd shy away from 'plant in a bag' catalogs. You would be far better off getting 10 plants of larger quality stock that will fruit in 2-3 years than 25 of the little tiny crappy things you get from some places (you'll know em when you see the catalogs, 5 or 6 different companies, all with the same artwork).
You definitely want to stay away from them for things like Raspberries and Strawberries unless you have an isolated patch you can grow them on for a year, just in case you have to burn them. Haven't seen viruses, but the plants always arrive with active mold. You usually have a 20% mortality on the bagged and tagged stuff..

I tend to go with places like Millers, Stark, Pinetree Nurseries, a few more local places for blueberry and cranberry bushes and certified raspberry plants.

If you go with mail order nurseries, order early so you may get better stock. It's almost too late now. The first catalogs come out right after Christmas. Plan ahead, cuz I guarantee you they will send them while the ground is still frozen. Have a trench dug and a good quantity of dirt thawed (maybe heaped in the garage) cuz you'll want to heal them in for a day or two (cuz they never arrive on Friday night for the weekend). I can't tell you how many years I've been out in the dark with the mattock chopping through the top ice in the garden to heal in the spring shrubbery.

Natives are tough. A lot of times they're not used to growing in quantities meant to be eaten. Things like mayapples can take up a hellacious amount of space for one fruit per plant. Tasty, if you can beat the skunks to them. They can eat them green apparently. Ramps and mustards can be as aggressive as mints (I keep mints in pots on a patio square to avoid ground rooting. You can move them around that way to help with the companion gardening. Sulpher butterflies don't like crushed mint.

Cranberries can be grown without a bog. Blueberries set well if they are happy. Raspberries you have to replace them every once in a while. Same with strawberries. And move the beds to cut down on disease. Crabapples like Firecracker and Whitney are far more carefree than apple trees. The tart pie cherry called Dwarf North Star is a heavy bearer and self pollinating (better if there are two though). Grows fast too.
Elderberries if you have a place where they can get their feet wet. Paw paw, if you can get the cantankerous things to thrive (not having much luck), Hazelnuts are a nice fence row shrub that doesn't mind being pruned a bit. Any of the regular nut trees, you might be waiting 15 years to see a crop.

One trick I learned for a sure fire hardening period if you do start a plant indoors is to use a Brooder lamp and a Large Black plastic bag make sure th bag has clearance from the Lamp so as not to burn and cut a slit so its a tube and drap over your plant in a garage when you come home from work etc. This allowed me to easily move my plants out for sun and keep em protected at night with out having to move em back and forth into the house. I like the upside down method for many plants specially Tomatoes and Peppers so its a pain to lug those in the house.

5 Gal black bucket, old T shirt(s), plants

Poke a hole in bottom for tomatoes or sides for peppers (can do strawberries this way also haven't tried I don't like 2 season harvest plants)

I do one tomato plant or 2 peppers( one per side).

I lay a piece of tee-shirt/ cloth over the hole, want it small 3/4"=1" and a big enough piece of cloth circle with a small slit to keep the soil from leaking out.

The tomato will benefit from being buried deep, so I gently get it through the slit then through the hole in bucket and lay soil around it make sure to pack the soil around the stem, so the tomato plant roots are actually near the top of the bucket, then I cover/fill with soil so the bucket is full with about an inch or two from the top.

Depending on your soil you can add sponges or mulch/organic matter to adjust how much water your bucket retains.

You can also fill to save money on soil with bottles etc but you want soil in and around the stems as roots will grow out from there.

Water daily just until you start to see water drip from bottom.

I really like sweet millions for this method, they are a hearty well producing tomato plant, I have also found Lilac peppers are my favorite and are great RAW, perfect for salads good pepper flavor but mild so as to not take over all your taste-buds, they also add nice color to cooked dishes.

The plants grow down for a short period but will quickly arch back towards the sun, this is normal, so don't get weirded out lol.

If you go with tomatoes whether you grow them from seed or they are store bought bury the plant all the way up to the bottom leaves. Tomatoes have the ability to develop roots all along their stem so you'll be giving the plant the ability to generate a much larger root base which will feed it much better. You can either dig a deeper hole or lay the plant sideways in a trench and bury it up to the bottom leaves. If you choose the latter, which is the way I normally plant them, they will straighten right up and have no problems at all. I usually plant them in a trench about the width of the container they are in.

Good luck.

You do live in a strawberry haven. Growing these would produce profit, but is labor intensive. Even a small field would produce good pick your own profits. There is always someone plowing under an old field and you may make a deal for some plants. You can make money with pumpkins too especially in years with poor pumpkin crops which may be likely. As far as putting food by, you should plant winter squash which may keep up to a year in your climate if stored correctly. Just a few plants of green beans will keep you stocked for a year. I like the idea of berry plants and elderberries too in your perimeters. You are too far north for a few plants mentioned. Tomatoes would be great, but you will need to make efforts to make sure the plants are big enough when you transplant them and that they are varieties that have a better success rate so far north. I really don't know what equipment you have or your experience.

I'm Z5 and unless you go to some extremes you end up replanting Tomatoes every year, they are not treated as perennials up here normally. Also strawberries end up having to be plowed under every 4 yrs or so and you end up loosing the first season from plucking back flower buds and then having to replant after the 4th so you would have to put the work into staggerring your plantings so you have a constant supply.. Personally I would favor roses over strawberries for a profit and they are both very similar as they are in the same family, Strawberries are basically selectively breed roses.

Side note: Start up a rose garden build a small lodge and rent out the space as a wedding destination. use it as a hunting lodge in the off seasons if you got enough game around their. Also if you price essential oils you will see how lucrative roses can turn out.
