I have loved pistols all my life, and have shot a lot of rounds out of the lowly revovler. I was watching a friend try out his new pistol the other day, and he could not hit the broad side of a barn, and i ask him how many pistols he had shot. He then stated, this is the first pistol I have ever shot, and all of the stray bullets began making sense.
When I read this article, it reminds me of my friend!

Good post. I started my kids and my grand kids on the lowly Ruger Single Six with sub sonics. Started my wife on it too. When the grand kids get handy with the Single Six they can graduate to bigger and better things. I have one 10 year old grand daughter that has it down pretty good already. She's the arch nemesis of clay pigeons.

The only part of this guys philosophy I can agree with is the "get a revolver" part.

He might not be "wrong", I just have different preferences due to my personal experiences.

I think he uses a revovler because you can start a new pistol shooter out on a long barreled revovler which is much easier to shoot accurately, then of course you could move them on to shooting a short barreled pistol of any kind after that. Have you ever seen a semi auto with a 71/2 inch barrel?

Nope, the real truth is that he uses these monstrosities because they are so ugly, clumbsy and generally useless that the LGS will pay him to take them out of the counter and make room for something that will sell!

The only real advantage 12" barrels have is that you can cut the barrel into three pieces and have one revolver and two single shots, all with 4" barrels.

I am also a bullet caster so I differ with his recommendation of the .22 lr. I can shoot reduced charge centerfire just as cheap and not have to keep a seperate and useless matched set of 12" barreled range toys.

I bet this guy drives a Prius.

I love revolvers but I don't really see the point of a massive 12" revolver, just get a rifle. and a Taurus "Silhouette"? talk about a pile junk. Personally I just don't see any value in a handgun over 8".

I bet if this guy went to a Bullseye match he would get smoked by all of the 8" semi autos. They might feel sorry for him and let him use his cheater sticks.

Well I don't like pistols with 12 inch barrels either, but I do have a great respact for revolvers becaue they are at least 90% metal, they are the most dependable hand gun ever invented, and a fine revovlver is a work of art compared to the tupperware semi's everybody drools over these days.
I have nothing against the tupperware semi's because they do have their place in personal defense, but a large bore revolver will protect you from creatures that a tupperware gun only piss off! If I could only have one handgun, it would be a revolver!

It seems to me that a revolver would fair better in long-term storage too, since there are fewer moving parts and the tolerances aren't as small. I'd feel fairly safe shooting a rusty, crud-condition Ruger black-hawk, but I'd be hesitant to try that with a Beretta.

Depends on the gun.

While an old style single action Colt has only 5 moving parts and three springs the introduction of each safety feature adds parts and each part added is anothe part that can fail. Most modern SSA revolvers now have a multitude of small weak parts. Ruger Blackhawks have more parts than you would realize; hammer blocks, transfer bars, itty-bitty coil springs pushing plungers and such. A little rust plays bloddy he!! with them.

DA revolvers have a bunch of small, right down to tiney, critical parts. Each is carefully coordinated and must work properly for the whole gun to operate properly.

Most single action autopistols have no more moving parts than a wheelgun, and what they do have are able to cope with wider tolerances and are easier to replace.

DA autopistols do have a bunch of springs, bells and whistles, but they seem to hold up amazingly well, espically the ones intended for military applications.

As a reloader with SHTF in mind, I still choose the revolver, mostly due to ammo tolerance. Autoloaders have very narrow ammo tolerance parimeters. With my .357 revolvers I can load a birdshot, two .38 target wadcutters, a jacketed soft point and two +p.357 simiwadcutters all in the same cylinder and know every one of them is going to cycle.

That is a critical factor if you are down to scrounged junk ammo.

I am not going to dis anyones decision on these matters, everyone has the right to be wrong if they want too.

I like revovlers because they dont spit out brass with each one bearing your fingerprint, and you still have them for reloading! In 40 years of shooting pistols I have never had a revolver fail to go bang, and I cannot say that for semi auto's.

I agree I keep a 357 as my personal defense gun it might be small for a bear but at least it give me a chance unlike a 9mm.

Also I know a revolver will go off.. less mechanics to fail, I know someone that got attacked by 2 guys they jumped on him with the intention of killing him, he had a revolver grabbed it stuck it in between him and one of the attackers shot and put him down then shot the next attacker that was also on him. A semi auto would stopped after the first shot because the slide would of had no room to go back and my friend probably would of been dead. When things are close and a gun gets grabbed or shot off next to clothing a semi auto is not very dependable.

I do like semi autos and their are some really nice ones but when it comes down to what I will depend my life on and sleep next to I choose a revolver.

Do not get me wrong, I do like my autopisols, and I carry several tried and true thoroughly tested self shuckers in various calibers for both personal defense and sport.

I have a p3at with more pocket miles that I want to admit and a CZ75 has pushed the 1911 out of my all time favorite combat pistol slot (the thing holds 23 freekin' rounds and has selective SA/DA for first shot!).

And if I am caught short of funds and need a pistol for protecting life and limb the autoloader can be manufactured cheaper than a revolver by about half the money for the same quality. That old thing about "save your money and buy a better gun" is a load of crap when you live in a cheap apt in a high crime area and only make starvation wages. I am getting a HiPoint as quick as my little hands can wrap around one of their bulky grips! Or a Cobra or Davis or whatever is available.

But that famous old one pistol only choice would be a good DA revolver in .357 for me.

Other's milage may varry, that's ok.

A .44 will work too, or a .41, or even a .38 spl if that is all that is available.

I once torture tested a cylender full of .38 brass, shooting and reloading the cases until they failed. Remington nickel plated .38spl new ammo reloaded with 4.5 gns Unique and a 150 gn cast SWC. That is just a frog hair under a factory loading, extremely accurate and pleasant to shoot from any size .38. It has been my standard load since I learned that it shot to the fixed sights on my first S&W model 10.

I got real tired.

The first failure occurred at reload cycle #37 with a small pinhole burned through the side of the case. It held up for three more reloadings before the case split. By that time the rest had burned through also.

Just try shooting the same recycled case 37 times through an autoloader. You are going to spend a lot of time crawling around huntng for the brass. I do not think that in 45 years of pistol shooting I have ever made a range trip with my autoloaders and brought back all the brass I shot up! Out in the woods I do not even look for it.

And low and behold, there has been .38spl ammo on the Walmart shelf for the past 2 months!

I have an old Colt Python and a Trooper 3, both in .357 magnum. I bought them both around 1980 and they are the best revovlers I have ever owned. I like the fact that I can actually hit a target at 50 yards way better than with an ACP, and could hunt deer with them if necessary. I think the .357 round is the best defense round ever created!

This should tickle the innards of all the folks that lost track of reality and are now out of everything.

When everyone is down to their last magazine of 9mm perhaps they will think of the lowly .38 spl and remember this photo. Yep, that's a 2 gallon bucket.

Home cast bullets and primers and powder bought in bulk, these rounds cost me about 2.5 cents each. It is also why I have zero need for a .22 as a trainer pistol. Neither does anyone else if they think practically. For the cost of a matching ".22 trainer pistol" one can purchase an entire reloading and casting setup for the full size centerfire pistol.
