Here in a couple of weeks I'll be gone to work at my checkpoint "Mile 101" for the Yukon Quest. The Yukon Quest is our 1000 mile dog sled race. It's "The Toughest Race on Earth". My friend Wes is involved as well and is writing a series on it from Lance Mackey's kennel. Normally, it's the Iditarod, our other 1000 mile race, that gets all the attention. It is much more commercialized. But that one is down by Anchorage and the Bearing Sea. The Quest is an Interior race. Here are some of my posts on it over the years.

It was brought to my attention that Ive talked about all these races and never gave the back story on where they came from and what they are.
So, lets start with the Yukon Quest, it starts this year in Whitehorse Yukon Territory in Canada, and finishes in Fairbanks Alaska. The race alternates every year and follows the same trail that goes about a thousand miles.

So now we finally have our own video productions being made. There has only been one other that I can think of, a movie about women in the Quest, Dog Gone Addiction. But here is part 1 of the newest.

If you missed Yukon Quest 2013 - Episode 1 on NorthwesTel last night, here it is! Stay tuned for the next three weeks for more episodes - schedule is online at nwtelcommunitytv.ca.

If you'd like, I'll try to keep you updated while I'm there. We've had internet access the last couple of years. Ours is the toughest checkpoint, heating only with wood, lights from generators, etc.

Wow, was made assistant checkpoint manager along with the checkpoint manager's wife at last night's meeting. With the exception of the checkpoint manager, his wife and his son, I am the only veteran member left. Our dog lot manager is running the Yukon Quest 300 this year so we have all new crew. Yikes. Our checkpoint manager goes to the start of the race and follows the mushers, filming the race, so is not there part of the time.

Someone asked me what we do at checkpoints.

We provide food for the mushers. They must sign in when they get there and sign out when they leave. While there the vet team checks each dog. Each musher has a "vet book" with a section for each dog on his/her team. The vets makes notes on each dog such as how they look, info about any sore muscles, if a dog has diarrhea (kind of common due to a few reasons), or coughing, isn't eating well, etc. Then at the next checkpoint, the vet who checks the dog can follow up on the condition and see if it has been resolved or the dog needs to be dropped. At each checkpoint the mushers' handlers meet them there to take over possession and care of any dogs that need to be dropped. Once a dog is dropped, it is out of the race. Most of the time the mushers themselves give the dog that is having a problem over to their handler and then the dog finishes out the race being babied and cared for by the handler out of the dog truck. After all, no one cares for their dogs like their mushers. But the vets have the final word and if one says a dog must be dropped, then it is dropped. Mostly mushers will say something such as Fido over there has been favoring the right shoulder. Let's look at it. Or Spot has been coughing, I need you to see if he has a temperature. Dogs are dropped for other reasons as well. Sometimes they are just tired. Sometimes it is a young dog that was only planned for to be in part of the race for experience. Sometimes it is an older dog with experience that the plan had been to only use him as far as our checkpoint to get over Eagle Summit, the hardest part of the race. At a checkpoint, a dog dropped for dehydration can get an immediate iv.

http://cloud9doula.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/img_0790-medium.jpg

As a checkpoint, we also have the mushers drop bags. These are full of dog and human food, gear and supplies.

http://cloud9doula.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/img_0614-medium.jpg

http://cloud9doula.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/img_0014.jpg

We also provide straw for the dogs to rest on. Most mushers rest in the checkpoints but some mushers will take their bale of straw and camp on the trail. Harder on the musher but more rest for the dogs as they are not being interrupted by other teams.

We have communications that helps with letting everyone know when mushers arrive, conditions, coordinate vets and race officials, etc.

Here is a video of the checkpoint when it is not in use before it's opened up for the race. This is out checkpoint manager Peter.

Drivers must start the race with no less than eight (8) dogs and no more than fourteen (14) dogs;
and must finish with no less than six (6) dogs. Dogs may not be added to a team after the start of the
race. An expired dog does not count as a dog for the minimum required.
Only dogs suitable for arctic travel will be permitted to enter the race.

From the rules which are pretty interesting to read if you care to.

Trail etiquette requires a team that is being over come to pull over and let the faster team pass. This is in effect through out the race with the exception of "No Man's Land", the last 2 miles of the race. Then it's everyone for himself. Mushers often travel together, taking turns breaking trail. Besides, dogs LIKE following another team as it cuts down on them having to pay attention so close. So they often run the race fairly together till the last checkpoint.

One of the differences between the Iditarod and the Quest is that the Quest checkpoints can almost all be accessed by road. With the exception of Eagle whose road is closed in the winter, it's just a matter of how far you want to drive. Each musher has a handler that follows along in the dog truck to pick up any dropped dogs, to clean up the mushers straw after he leaves and to retrieve any drop bags that the musher leaves behind.

Here's where to watch the race.

At most checkpoints, there is a party like atmosphere when the handlers show up. Although they do get exhausted, it's fun.

They tagged that as "The Toughest Race on Earth" but that is the Yukon Quest's tag line. The Iditarod is "The Last Great Race". There was a bit of a hub bub about that when it came out. No one liked that they had stolen the Quest's name.

About Lance...Born and raised in Alaska, Lance Mackey has grown up around dog mushing and tough times. His father, Dick Mackey, was one of the founders of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race ,which was officially organized in 1973.

The Iditarod is a 1,200 mile sled dog race across Alaska's wilderness. Lance's father, Dick went on to win the 1978 Iditarod race by ONE second. Alaskans still talk about that great race. In 1983, Lance's oldest brother, Rick , was the winner of the Iditarod. For Lance, this was his legacy, as a son, as a brother and as an up and coming dog musher. Lance wanted to win the Iditarod also. This dream almost ended when he was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2001 and underwent extensive surgery as well as radiation treatment.

Determined to move forward. Lance started the 2002 Iditarod with a feeding tube still in place in his stomach but had to drop out of the race halfway into it. Lance took 2003 off to regroup. For the next several years he continued to run dogs and dream of winning the Iditarod. In 2005 he entered the Yukon Quest, another challenging 1,000 mile sled dog race, winning it in his rookie year. Repeating that in 2006, 2007 & 2008 making him the only 4 time Yukon Quest Champion in history. In 2007, he returned to the Iditarod also.

Again he beat the odds and did what was previously thought to be impossible, he won both the Yukon Quest and Iditarod in the same year and within two weeks of each other. He repeated that feat in 2008. In 2009 he won the Iditarod again, defeating intense competition and severe weather. Perhaps his greatest personal accomplishment is that he has been honored on both the Quest and the Iditarod for taking the best care of his dogs, who he considers to be the true champions.

Lance demonstrates the true spirit of what Alaskans are. His incredible back to back Quest and Iditarod championships show his grit, determination, and his appetite for "tough". He has been nominated twice for national ESPY awards.

Lance will say "tell me it can't be done,... I'll give it everything I’ve got to prove that it can. Can't is a word that I do not want to understand. I always try to do my very best, I may not always finish number one, but it will always be the best I can do".

Lance has worked very hard to be where he is today and sacrificed beyond most peoples' comprehension. Lance is a father, a cancer survivor, a Champion dog driver, and a down to earth, regular guy. He has served as an inspiration for countless numbers of people.

It is attitude and appetite that make him who he is. He constantly reminds us that “Dreams can and do come true”.

Cool video. I was blown away that a guy lost by 26 seconds last year.....in a 1000 mile race.
Dick Mackey won it by 1 second. The nose of the first dog wins.

Here's a video of the two of them just hanging around chatting about the race. It's pretty rare to get this type of "interview". Hugh Neff, guy in the middle was the winner. Allen Moore is the one on the left. I really like Allen. His wife, Aily Zirkle is the only women ever to win the Yukon Quest.

Hugh is known for being pretty cocky and is generally pretty mouthy. But maybe he's growing up lol. He's been trying to win for years so I guess I'm glad he finally did it. But once is enough, this is Lance's year to return!

A story from 2011.

Yukon Quest musher Hans Gatt plunges into frozen river, suffers second-degree frostbite

John Wagner/News-Miner

Two members of Hans Gatt's dog team peer out of a dog truck during the 2011 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race on Monday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2011, in Central, Alaska.

Posted: Tuesday, February 15, 2011 3:56 am | Updated: 1:45 pm, Wed Dec 26, 2012.

CENTRAL — It’s the end of the trail for four-time Yukon Quest champion Hans Gatt.

Gatt scratched in Central after he suffered second-degree frostbite on both hands after falling into overflow two miles before Birch Creek. It was the second time the

52-year-old musher from Whitehorse ran into trouble in pursuit of his fifth win this year.

“I thought this is going to be a really bad dream,” Gatt said. “Everything that’s happened since Whitehorse, it’s just unbelievable.”

Gatt said he started his run on Sunday with his dogs “flying” out of Circle and soon realized he was moving faster than leader Hugh Neff. He figured he could probably catch Neff by Eagle Summit.

But when he hit overflow before Birch Creek — about 60 miles before Central — things started to go wrong.

Gatt thought what he saw ahead was glare ice and that it was strong enough to support a dog team. All 11 of his dogs were on top of the ice when it collapsed beneath them, dropping the team into 3 feet of water and submerging Gatt up to his neck.

He struggled to get the dogs out of the water and onto stable ice. He thought he had fallen through a river until he started slipping on the ice beneath him.

Gatt spent an hour pulling his dogs out of the water, working hard and not noticing the cold around him. The Birch Creek area is notoriously frigid, and Gatt suspected it was around 50 below zero that night.

Sebastian Schnuelle came behind Gatt and helped him reroute a trail over the overflow. It took Gatt two hours after the breakthrough to get back on the trail and running.

His dogs were fine, but Gatt was freezing. His clothes and boots froze solid. Schnuelle gave Gatt dry socks and helped him wrap dog blankets and burlap bags over his boots.

After Gatt rebootied his dogs, he realized his hands were in trouble. Dexterity is needed to change booties and Gatt wore only his glove liners. Wet, and in 50-below weather, it wasn’t enough to protect him. On the ride to Central, he knew something was wrong.

He made it to the checkpoint early Monday morning, holding swollen fingers wrapped in cotton gloves. He said it was hard to deal with being out of control.

“I’m used to just being very forceful when it comes to racing and when it comes to making decisions,” he said. “And here there was just nothing I could do about those things.”

The first worrisome experience of this race for the veteran dog driver came after the start of the second half of the race, in Dawson City.

Gatt didn’t think he would make it to the next checkpoint, at Eagle, after struggling over American Summit early Friday. Blowing snow forced him to camp out and wait for help. There, Eureka musher Brent Sass helped lead Gatt’s team over the summit.

Gatt said this was supposed to be his last season of racing. He wasn’t sure Monday if he would still run the Iditarod.

With everything that happened in the Quest, Gatt, a seven-time finisher, thought there was dark humor in the situation.

“Obviously, Mother Nature had it out for me.”

Here is my second favorite musher Brent Sass, helping Hans Gott over Eagle Summit during a blizzard. Mushers can not accept outside help but mushers can help other mushers. They often do. This is not the first time one musher hooks up another team to his own to get over the summit.

This type of sled is called a trail dragger. A few mushers use them but they are not that popular.

A story from 2006 that everyone remembers. I had only been here for 3 years then so was just starting to break into the mushing circle. I was friends with the dad of the 17 year old Alyssa and was handling for a musher only as far as the Angle Creek Checkpoint that year.

Yukon Quest news
Seventh musher rescued by helicopter

By ctalbott, staff writer

Published February 15, 2006

By TIM MOWRY
Staff Writer

A 30-hour ordeal did not end until Tuesday morning for a trio of Yukon Quest 300 mushers who ended up stalled on the 35-mile trail between Angel Creek Lodge and Mile 101 due to heavy snow and blizzard-like conditions.

The group included the youngest musher in the field, who was airlifted to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

While their troubles were overshadowed farther up the trail by the Monday night rescue of six mushers who were plucked off Eagle Summit by an Alaska Air National Guard helicopter, they too suffered a long, cold, miserable night that could have turned out much worse than it did but for the efforts of volunteers who broke trail on snowmachine from Angel Creek Lodge.

Alyssa Quaile, a 17-year-old Fairbanks musher, was medivaced off the top of Boulder Creek Summit on Tuesday morning by the 68th Medical Air Ambulance from Fort Wainwright with minor frostbite and a sprained wrist. The only one of seven airlifted mushers actually flown back to Fairbanks from the trail, she was treated and released from Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Tuesday afternoon.

Qauile spent more than 30 hours on top of the summit, at well over 3,000 feet elevation, unable to get her dogs to move forward after they stalled in the white cauldron that enveloped the three mushers as they began the climb into the Rosebud Summit area.

After injuring her back on the climb up Boulder Creek Summit, one of the steepest climbs on the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race trail, Two Rivers musher Tammi Rego could no longer push her sled up the hill to help her dogs over the final hump.

Without her help, the dogs couldnt budge the sled. She was stuck in one of the worst possible places in the world to hunker down, but she didnt have a choice.

I couldnt push anymore, said Rego. The dogs kept trying but they couldnt move the sled. It was too steep.

So the 31-year-old musher, one of 14 competitors in the Quest 300, which follows behind the 1,000-mile Quest, did the only thing she could do. She pitched camp on an exposed face near the top of the hill.

Thats one of those things you know you shouldnt do get stuck on an exposed face like that, she said. But there was nothing I could do.

Rego and Ester musher Chester Witczak made their way back to Angel Creek Lodge early Tuesday after snowmachiners from Angel Creek came to their rescue and broke trail through 18 inches of fresh snow to reach them.

It wasnt a pleasant situation for anyone involved, said Rego, the only one of the three mushers who could be reached for comment.

It was rough, she said by phone from her Two Rivers home.

When she left Angel Creek at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Rego knew there was a storm blowing in. Officials had warned both she and Quaile, who left a short time before Rego, that the weather was changing.

I figured there was enough time to get up and over (Rosebud), said Rego.

But the 20-mile trail leading to the base of the mountain was horrific, she said.

Patches of sloping ice and overflow dotted much of the trail. Mushers repeatedly slid down patches of ice and slammed into trees at the bottom, soaking themselves and their sleds in the process.

I cant say how many sections of overflow there were, said Rego, who broke a stanchion on her sled at one point and then jerry-rigged it together. My wheel dogs went under (water) one time.

It started snowing when she began climbing up Boulder Creek Summit but the wind wasnt blowing bad yet, Rego said. Near the top of the hill, Rego said she felt a pop in her back that rendered her helpless. After unsuccessfully trying to get her dogs to move forward, Rego made the decision to camp at around 6 p.m.

I got in my sleeping bag and put handwarmers everywhere and basically hunkered down, she said. Luckily it wasnt cold. If it had been 40 below I wouldnt have made it.

It was about midnight when Witczak came up on her and asked what she was doing camped where she was.

I told him I couldnt move, she said. Nobody in their right mind would camp there unless they had to.

Determined to make it over the summit, Witczak continued on only to be halted by whiteout conditions on the other side, Rego said.

He got over the summit and started down but couldnt see anything, she said, relating what Witczak had told her.

After a short rest in which he sat behind his sled to get out of the wind, Witczak turned his team around. It was about 6 a.m. Monday when he returned and told Rego what had happened. Witczak continued down the hill to get out of the wind but Rego didnt want to chance it in the dark and waited a couple hours until there was enough light to see.

It took Rego about an hour and a half to plow her way back down the hill through waist-deep snow drifts before she reached the spot where Witczak had camped, she said. They stayed there for about two hours before retreating to the bottom of the hill. They reached the bottom at about 3 p.m. and made camp again.

Both she and Witczak were having trouble getting their dogs to go, Rego said. Plowing through the heavy snow discouraged the lead dogs, and both mushers had females in their teams that were in heat, causing problems that were fitting for Valentines Day.

An Alaska State Trooper helicopter flew over and circled them a short time after they reached the bottom of the hill, Rego said. About two hours later, a trio of snowmachinersSteve Verbanac, Dennis Alexander and Larry Bradleyshowed up after breaking trail from Angel Creek, Rego said.

After getting a fire started, Verbanac, a trapper familiar with the area, continued up the hill to look for Quaile. Though his snowmachine became stuck in deep snow, Verbanac contined on foot and found Quaile on top of the summit with a tangled dog team that showed no interest in moving.

Making sure Quaile was safe, Verbanac then walked three miles back to where Rego, Witczak and the two snowmachiners were camped so he could send someone for help.
It was about 10 p.m. when Rego hooked up her team and followed Bradley on the trail back to Angel Creek. They arrived back at Angel Creek Lodge at 4:25 a.m. on Tuesday. Witczak arrived back at the lodge later in the morning, tired but uninjured.

Troopers received a call from Alexander at around 6 a.m., informing them that Quaile needed to be airlifted off the summit. A MAST unit from Fort Wainwright was dispatched around 11 a.m. to pick her up.

Rego was thankful for the efforts of locals from Angel Creek and Two Rivers who helped search for she and the two other mushers. And throughout the ordeal, Rego couldnt help but be impressed by her dogs.

The dogs were awesome, she said.

On February 2nd our two 'Mile 101' trail breakers, Kerry Barnes and David Hamilton will drive up to Mile 101 and reestablish the trail across Eagle Summit towards Central and on the other side down into the Birch Creek drainage towards Fairbanks After several heavy storms have gone through the area, reports suggest, that the trail has been blown in.
Nevertheless, a final trail sweep will happen shortly before mushers arrive around February 10th.
We will open the checkpoint on the evening of February 8th to have enough time to get situated, set up generators and establish internet connections via satellite through a sponsorship by Hughes Net. Thank you, Hughes Net !
As a warning: We will have no public internet at 101 this year for a variety of reasons, mostly dealing with official emergency contacts. Too many visitors broke the sat connection with heavy up- or downloads in the past, and officials will rely heavily on the connection for updates.
Otherwise we have assembled a great crew.
Now, .... let's hope that the weather gods have mercy and our biggest mistake will be not to have packed a T-Shirt. :)

2013 marks the 30th year of the Yukon Quest. In celebrating its anniversary, Northwestel Community TV is speaking with the organizers, mushers and historians of the Yukon Quest. In the second of three episodes, we talked with John Firth (author of two books about the Yukon Quest) about what the race was like in the early years, how it started and how it's changed over the years.

Here is a story told by my friend Susan about a mushing trip I took her on. She's a great writer and photographer. I thought some of her explanations from a non musher was very well done and that you all might enjoy them as well as the pictures. Jan is my best friend so I get the best of both worlds in that she is the owner of the kennel but I get to run her dogs.

Wilmshurst will be first out for the 30th running

It was a capacity crowd at the Yukon Convention Centre for the Yukon Quest Start & Draw Banquet Thursday.

Mushers, handlers, officials, and fans enjoyed local entertainment, dinner and a silent auction before the main event – the bib draw.

Dawson City’s Brian Wilmshurst was the 11th musher on stage and he drew bib #1 much to the delight of the crowd. That means Wilmshurst will be the first musher to leave the start line Saturday. Carcross musher Crispin Studer was the 26th and last musher to draw a bib, and ended up with bib #26 – sponsored by the Yukon Quest’s Facebook fans.

Four-time champion Lance Mackey drew bib #6 and said, “I’ll take it. Number six has been good to me before.”

Mackey said six is the number he wore in 2006, when he won his second Yukon Quest.

Well Ken is spot on! I've heard Hugh say more then once he would never run the Whitehorse to Fairbanks route again. He lost his main lead dog last time. Loosing a dog on the race (or any time of course) is a huge blow to any musher.

Introducing Ken Anderson, providing his commentary on the 2013 race.

Ken's Early Predictions

Several weeks ago I was approached by the Yukon Quest to write some insider commentary for the race. Being a bit busy right now with racing (I’m writing this the night before the Tustumena 200), Iditarod food drops, long training runs, and family life, I balked for a long time at taking this on. However, in the years I haven’t run the race myself I’ve always invariably turned into an armchair quarterback, glued to the internet and following the daily coverage from the trail, irregardless of how busy I’ve been at this time. I’ve always felt there was a bit of a void in the coverage of some races in terms of ‘insider’ perspective. Hopefully I can fill this void. I’ll try at least. My goal is to not be too analytical and dry, yet not too inflammatory. I’m fully aware that chances are good I’ll put my foot in my mouth at some point in this process. Oh well; it won’t be the first time.

To be perfectly honest, I only agreed to this about 12 hours ago while driving to the Tustumena 200; there’s just been too much going on right now and the decision unfortunately got pushed to the back burner. While on the road and in between vet checks I’ve been trying to reach mushers in their hotel rooms and by cell for a quick pre-race interview. The only one I reached was Jake Berkowitz. He was great. I’ve been playing phone tag with Brent Sass. I got a quick interview with Allen Moore before he turned in but those are the only three I’ve reached.

I’ve been instructed to give commentary on ‘the race’. The YQ is known for its colorful characters throughout the field and realize those towards the back of the pack unfortunately receive minimal media coverage much to the dismay of their adoring and/or curious fans. I will, however, be focusing more on those characters up front. I have contacts along the race trail I will hopefully be able to reach while the race is underway. I know very well how things you see on the internet don’t always reflect what’s going on out on the trail. With my limited contact with those in the trenches as well as the trackers, the timesheets, updates, my own anecdotes, and whatever I see on social media I’ll try to give my best shot at interpreting what’s going on out there.

As we approach the 2013 YQ, race fans remember all too well the drama of the 2011 race which ran in the same direction as this year’s race; whiteouts on American and Eagle summits, waist-deep overflow on Birch Creek through 45 below zero temps, no trail on the Yukon, and a crazy mix-up of the standings from Central to the finish line in Fairbanks. Many of those players are back this year for redemption: Hugh Neff, Dan Kaduce, Allen Moore, and Brent Sass. Mushers are notorious for their amnesia; quickly forgetting the agonies of past races, optimistically throwing themselves into the fray of the next invariably brutal event. What kinds of impressions did the 2011 YQ sear into the minds of those mushers, and how will it affect their races this year? Time will tell.

One thing is for sure: although the mushers travel over the same ground each year, the two alternating trail routes present totally different challenges. Most would agree that the most challenging part of the 1000-mile course lies on the American side of Dawson City (oops, it’s possible I just angered a few Canadians there…). Of course, Mother Nature can, and does, throw challenges at any time and place in the race: bitter cold on the Forty-Mile, high winds on American Summit, Yukon River jumble ice, more cold and possible overflow on Birch Creek, and the infamous Eagle Summit. Teams must save some reserves for this ominous stretch of trail, and bad things have happened to those who may have been too hasty prior to their 36 hour mandatory layover in Dawson. However, as we always say in dog racing, anything can (and probably will) happen in a dog race.

In my mind here are the players in this year’s race:

Hugh Neff- Last year’s returning champ is back to defend on a route he’s struggled with in the past, despite nearly winning in 2009 after a controversial call cost him the race. He was an absolute ghost in 2011, running an awesome race with a gargantuan lead over his nearest rival until tragedy struck on Eagle Summit, forcing him to scratch. Aside from starting a successful, new race from Tok to Eagle and back this year, Hugh has maintained a low profile on the race circuit, finishing 7th in this year’s Copper Basin. In my mind Hugh all bets are off; sometimes he gets it together for an exceptional performance, sometimes he doesn’t. A consistency he has displayed over the years though is a tendency to set the pace early. I’ll be really curious to see how he approaches the first half of this year’s race, given the limelight he’s in as the returning champ against the backdrop of 2011.

Allen Moore- Prior to last year’s stellar performance his abilities as a distance driver were relatively unknown, despite his success as a mid-distance racer. The SP Kennel seems to have hit their stride last year with Allen’s runner-up performance in the YQ as well as Aliy’s runner-up run in the Sheep Mountain 150 and Iditarod. They’ve carried that momentum into this year’s season with Allen winning the Copper Basin, Aliy winning the Two Rivers Solstice race, and both had strong showings at the Big Lake 50-50. Despite a statewide shortage in snowfall this year, the Fairbanks area was one of the few places that had decent snow early, lending for what Allen described to me as a very solid year of training for them. No doubt they’re hungry to change last year’s 2-2-2 season into a 1-1-1 season.

Jake Berkowitz- Speaking of hungry, this guy’s breathing fire. As last year’s rookie-of-the-year his meteoric rise to success on the Alaskan circuit has turned many heads in the world of mushing. Jake told me he has an astonishing 4000 miles on his dogs prior to this year’s race. I think the most miles I ever had before the YQ was 2500. He said it’s the most solid team he’s ever driven and he’s hungry for a win. He had a strong showing in the Top of The World 350 earlier this season as well as the Copper Basin. In last year’s Iditarod he blew by me on the way to Old Woman Cabin like I was standing still, fully destined for a top-five finish had he not nearly sliced off a digit in Unalakleet forcing him to scratch. I’ll come right out and say I’d be shocked if he wasn’t in the top-three this year. Jake is a real student of the sport and I’ll look for him to run a consistent schedule, never reaching beyond his team’s means. And with that many miles on, my guess is his team’s means will be sizeable. And, speaking of hunger, he told me his new wife, Robin, has him on a honey and milk diet, helping turn this formerly pudgy, unlikely athlete into a hungry, mushing machine.

Lance Mackey- Rumor has it Lance is back. With a commanding win at the Top of The World 350 and a clearer focus after dealing with some issues in his personal life he will be, as always, a strong competitor. He’s known for his, at times, unorthodox style of mushing, pulling off monstrous runs just when you think things might not be going in his favor. I have noticed though a relatively consistent style of YQ strategy employed by him. He tends to hang just behind the leader(s), banking rest relative to them in the first 300 miles, before going for gold at the halfway point in Dawson. After that he tends to pull the plug, doing long runs with minimal rests. My sources in Whitehorse say he’s calm, collected, and confident. I haven’t heard news of the state of his physical health issues that have plagued him in the past.

Brent Sass- The guy with those glasses, upbeat demeanor, and endless amounts of energy who’s a constant threat. Brent’s steady upwards trajectory, optimism, and work ethic will most likely land him in the YQ’s winner’s circle some day. The question is only when. I missed my interview with him but from what I’ve gleaned from social media he seems to have had a strong training season at his isolated homestead up in Eureka.

Dan Kaduce- Dan is back after a heartbreaking run in 2011. He ran one of the most compelling 1000-mile races I’ve ever witnessed in recent years. In an age where long runs and short rests had become the norm Dan stuck to a seemingly archaic strategy of nearly equal runs to equal rests. The stars aligned, nasty weather hit the last half of the race, and Dan’s methodical patience began to pay huge dividends with him catching the leaders in Central with a blazing fast dog team only to be denied by the notorious Eagle Summit. It’s a strategy he’s employed as long as I remember and in all probability he’ll employ it again. If the stars align again, he’ll be fun to watch.

Others to watch would be Ed Hopkins who’s got umpteen years of experience as does Kelly Griffin and Dave Dalton. Abbie West and rookie Scott Smith would also be my picks to round out the top 10.

There’s my take. I’ve got to get to bed. I’ve got a race to run in the morning.

Lance as bib 6 took off at 11:18 this morning. It wasn’t as hectic of a morning as we all expected, but it was still exciting! After getting up at 7, we grabbed breakfast, for the record Lance wanted everyone to know he had spinach on his omelet and a slice of melon, so he’s eating healthy! After that we headed to the room, grabbed our stuff and got packed. The weather is warm for this time of the year and the dogs don’t particularly like it, Lance said he will be moving slow the first day or so because the dogs have gotten a little stiff and a little fat the past few days, but don’t worry, he’s not out on a camping trip, he’s out to win.

Aaaannnd here we go! Crap. I think I may have to leave for the checkpoint on Friday night instead of Sat.

Today Yukon Quest Race Marshal Doug Grilliot announced that the race will be re-routed between Dawson City and Eagle, AK. The mushers will not be travelling over American Summit.

The decision was made based on reports from trailbreakers that the trail over American Summit is impassable in several locations. The trail will instead proceed directly down the Yukon River from Dawson to Eagle.

The estimated reduction of distance is 50 miles.

The Yukon Quest organization will release any further details as they become available.

Yep, just got an email from the race manager. That 50 miles is going to cut off 12 hours. I'm going to have to go up Friday night if I can't get Friday off. Ohhhhh. This next week will be my first week in my new position at work too so it REALLY sucks.

But on a happier note, here is a good little video from inside the start shoot. Organized chaos.

Here is the excerpt about Mile 101 (my checkpoint) from the "Brain Book" that is given to all the officials. This is a document with all the details about each checkpoint that officials need. It doesn't say, but we do, feed all the mushers, most of the handlers, and plenty of the media.

MILE 101

13.

This is a small set of cabins, a staging area at Mile 101 on the Steese Highway at the base of Eagle
Summit. This is a facility that is privately owned and generously offered to us by its owner whom is not
normally present during the Quest. Every year we try to leave this facility in better condition than we
found it. Please be respectful of these small cabins and the equipment there.
There will be two cabins used for the Quest checkpoint area; the main cabin will host the main
checkpoint area, and the public hangout area. The Communications cabin is completely off limits to
anyone other than the 10 volunteers, the vets and the officials. At no time will any media be allowed in
this cabin. It is a small space and communications personnel need a quiet place to work.

Checkpoint Manager: Peter Kamper, local Fairbanks resident

Sleeping Arrangements: The Mile 101 cabins are VERY limited in space. The 10 people, who travel to
Mile 101 to run the checkpoint for a week to 10 days, occupy all of the sleeping options here. There will
be a 20x12 heated weather port tent here for vets, officials and race personnel to store stuff, hang out
and sleep. Please use this space rather than the communications shack to perform these functions.

Eating: Food at MILE 101 is cooked by and for the 10 people that set up and run the dog drop. A vet or
official who has been staged there during a mealtime is welcome to eat, but please be respectful of the
food. There is a limited amount, and it has to feed these 10 volunteers for the duration of their stay.
Please be sure to head to Mile 101 with a full stomach!

Internet: Alaska Satellite Internet – HughesNet, will provide a wireless Internet connection. This is
received by a satellite dish, which is usually much slower in upload time, and can be less reliable than a
cable or DSL Internet. Please keep your uploading and downloading here to completely necessary items.
The system will be slowed down if there are many “large” users on this system.

Power Supply: Mile 101 is also run off of small generators. It has been a problem in the past when
there have been so many charging battery packs at Mile 101, that the generators have been overloaded.
Please make sure to do your charging before heading to Mile 101. There may not be facilities to do this
at Mile 101. Quest operations take priority over media battery charging, so if you are utilizing the power
for your laptop or battery and the power is needed for a checkpoint function, you will be asked to un-
plug. Please do not plan on having power at Mile 101!

Fuel: There is no fuel available at Mile 101, fill your tank before heading to Mile 101. Do not idle your
cars for more than 20 minutes at a time here.

These directions are for race officials who have rental cars. Fuel is provided by the Quest. So yea, they don't want to pay a ton more for fuel. Also, in some checkpoints the vehicle parking lot is close to the dog parking lot. If dogs have to breath exhaust, mushers no likey. When you get a bunch of dog trucks (diesels) running all night because that is where the handlers are sleeping, and it gets really cold, the exhaust just hangs on the ground.

Hugh normally has a really good first part of the race. But he burns his dogs out for the second half of the race. I'd love to see Allan Moore win. Dawson City is the half way point. The first musher to get to Dawson gets a prize of gold. They also have a mandatory 36 hour layover there. This is the only place that handlers can take over care of the dogs while the musher stays in town and gets some rest. Dogs are allowed an opened ended shelter. They normally look something like this.

Moore regains the lead, Abrahamson scratches

Hugh Neff continued his torrid pace on Day 3 of the Yukon Quest, arriving in Scroggie Creek for a rest Monday evening.

But Allen Moore, who was hot on his heels all afternoon, caught up in Scroggie and continued going through on his way to Dawson. Meanwhile, Jake Berkowitz was about 10 miles out of Scroggie in third position, as of 11:45 pm.

A large group including Brent Sass, Scott Smith, Dave Dalton, Lance Mackey, Markus Ingebretsen and Kelley Griffin were all between Stepping Stone and Scroggie. Susie Rogan, Normand Casavant and Abbie West arrived in Stepping Stone late this evening and decided to give their teams a break.

Cody Strathe, Crispin Studer, Ed Hopkins and Dan Kaduce left Pelly and are all traveling within minutes of each other.

Six mushers are sitting in Pelly. Denis Tremblay, Brian Wilmshurst, Darrin Lee, Misha Pedersen, Rob Cooke and Matthew Failor were all resting their teams and re-fueling with the famous Pelly food.

Dyan Bergen, Randy MacKenzie and Christina Traverse have left Carmacks bound for Pelly.

Ed Abrahamson became the first scratch of the 2013 Yukon Quest, making the decision not to continue in Carmacks.

The first musher is expected into Dawson City Tuesday afternoon. At stake for the musher arriving in Dawson first and completing the race is four ounces of gold – valued today at $1675 an ounce.

The difference between a dog drop and a check point is the mushers drop bags. Dog drops are just that, a place for mushers to drop any dogs in their teams that are done racing. Their handlers take them over at this point. Then the musher moves on down the trail or camps there for a rest. At a check point mushers have their prepacked bags of gear and dog/people food as well as access to the vet team. Having access to this gear is important. Mile 101 started off as a dog drop. When we were made an official checkpoint, more mushers were able to continue on the race where previously many mushers had to scratch at that point. Being in between two of the worst mountain passes makes it one of the toughest parts of the trail.

History of the Quest Trails: The Midway Lodge

By Jeffrey Dinsdale, volunteer writer for the 2013 Yukon Quest

As the teams make their way to Dawson City this week, it seems fitting to remember how the Quest checkpoints have changed over the years.

At 300 miles in length, the original leg between Carmacks and Dawson City was touted as the longest leg between two checkpoints of any sled dog race. Along this section of trail, there were three places where a musher could stop for some support and maybe some food: two hospitality stops at Maisy Mae and Stepping Stone, and one hamburger stand at the Midway Lodge.

The Midway Lodge happened to be located on the North Klondike Highway at a spot where the trail came out of the bush and followed the long, straight stretch of the highway known as the Minto Landing Flats. The lodge had no formal Quest status; it was not an official checkpoint or rest stop, nor was it a vet check or dog drop. The Midway Lodge was simply a restaurant with a parking lot and, if anyone so desired, a place to sleep for five dollars.

Owned and run by the Kruse family, the same folks who now host the checkpoint at McCabe Creek, the Midway Lodge had an agreement with the Quest to stay open 24-7 for as long as there were teams on the trail. As such, anyone could choose to stop at the lodge if they wished - and virtually every team did.

The Quest handlers, fans and groupies loved Midway. It was a great (warm) place to hang out all night drinking coffee, dressed in parkas and felt packs, and waiting for that one word from the posted lookout: “headlight.” Everyone would zip up their parkas and rush to the parking lot as that headlight drew closer and closer, before the team pulled into the parking lot and hooked down. The mushers would do what was best by the dogs and, when the chores were finished, the mushers would inevitably come inside for a cheeseburger and fries.

Mixed Emotions in the Middle of the Pack

Team dogs wait as their musher checks in and out of the PElly Crossing checkpoint.

Pelly Crossing, YK - Yukon Quest mushers running in the middle of the pack are experiencing a range of emotions as they close in on the half-way point in Dawson City. Some teams are pleased with their runs, while others have had to regroup after unexpected mishaps on the trail.

Listen (http://cpa.ds.npr.org/kuac/audio/2013/02/020513-MiddlePack.mp3)

French Canadian musher Normand Casavant is running the Yukon Quest for third time. He ran the race in 2009 and 2010. Since then, he’s been known as the singing musher. “I still sing a lot with my dogs," he laughs. My wife says you always sing."

But Casavant was singing the blues on his way into Carmacks. It appeared as though he had made a strategic decision to camp outside the checkpoint and blow through to McCabe Creek or even Pelly Crossing. In reality he had stopped his team to deal with a series of injuries. He pulled into Carmacks frantic and disappointed. “I saw a dog make a bad move and he hurt his shoulder. I saw another dog who was dehydrated, so I said ok, I better stop too, and right after that I saw two dogs that had some blood, one on his feet and one on his belly, so I thought, four dogs with injuries? I’m gonna scratch.”

His calls for a veterinarian echoed across the dog yard. After a long rest, Casavant decided to stay in the race and he left for Pelly Crossing, where he arrived in better spirits. Not long after leaving the race’s third checkpoint, however, he had to turn around. This time his laugh echoed across the dog yard. He had returned to drop a dog. On his way, he’d passed Dave Dalton. A short time earlier, the long time veteran had also turned around to drop a dog. Casavant joked that Dalton was likely glad to gain a little extra time on him.

The beginning of the race has been a mix of emotions for rookie Cody Strathe as well. The Fairbanks rookie arrived in Pelly Crossing with a stern look on his face. He immediately asked for a veterinarian. “My main leader is probably gonna stay here, which means I’ve only got two other good leaders and one of them is only a two year old.” Strathe says the idea of losing a main leader got him down during the 73 mile run between Carmacks and Pelly Crossing. He blames his rookie status on what he calls a ‘rollercoaster of emotions.’ “All the time up and down. Oh my God, my dogs are so awesome, oh my God, my dogs are falling apart, oh my God, I’m not gonna make it to Pelly, oh I’m gonna be the first one to Dawson." he laughs. "Sometimes I feel like I am racing and sometimes I feel like I need to stay here for 12 hours and pick up the pieces.”

An emotional Lance Mackey parked his team next to Strathe’s in the Pelly crossing dog yard. The four-time Quest champion is struggling to keep his race together after his team decided to quit eating and drinking. At the McCabe Creek dog drop, he pulled his team up to the dog truck, ready to scratch. But with a little encouragement from his handler’s he’s decided to press on. “I’ve run ‘em short, staying long, I’ve been running long, going short, straight water, baited water, straight kibble," Mackey rolls his eyes. "I’m trying everything. For the first time, from McCabe to here, they actually finally ate the snacks that I gave them.”

Mackey’s pride is clearly wounded. He’s never finished lower than third place in the six Quests he has run and he has never scratched from the race. "This was the team to beat man, no doubt in my mind," he grumbles. "I mean I have a nice little team when they move and eat but it goes in spurts. I’ll go good for a couple hours and then they’ll just fall on their head.”

But one musher whose race is going according to plan is the always smiling Abby West. Over a bowl of soup in Pelly crossing, she couldn’t help but talk up her team. “I’ve got some of ‘em that are my buddies. I’m like ‘You’re spending every night in the house from now on!’ So we’ll see.” her cheeks turn red as she smiles broadly.

West says she’s training up her team for a more competitive effort next year. In the mean-time, her plan is to enjoy the warmer weather as she leads the middle of the pack toward Dawson City.

Two things are really clear in all that you've posted. These dogs love to run and the owners love their dogs.

That is very correct Crash. While these dogs are working dogs, and "mostly" not pets, the mushers love them just as much as any lap dog. This isn't something they just do in February. Mushing is their full time job, year round. The dogs are bred to run. They love it.

Hugh was the first to Dawson so he gets the gold which amounts to a lot of mula. Of course, as he said in the video, if he doesn't finish the race, he doesn't get the gold. It goes to the first person who gets to Dawson, that finishes the race. Here's a video.

http://youtu.be/yRRCKBgr2EI

Edited to add, I'm sure Hugh is nervous about this race as the last time he ran it from the Whitehorse side, he lost a dog. That does happen occassionally. He had said that he would never run this route again. It's terribly upsetting for the musher of course as well as race fans around the world.

February 5, 11:00 am

Well Armchair Musher is alive. It’s been a tad busy with judging in Carmacks, so writing or taking pictures was not an option. Finally I took out the camera on the drive to Pelly. Beautiful light. The checkpoint was buzzing with activity. Lance was preparing to leave. Both Dave Dalton and Normand Casavant had left the checkpoint, only to return a while later to drop another dog. It’s a long run to Scroggy, so better be safe than sorry.

Now… This was about 24 hrs ago… and writing was the furthest thing on my mind. Often 1 phone on each ear, while talking to someone else in person kept me on my toes in Pelly. Report of a tree over the trail here. Musher overdue. Report of overflow there. Q300 mushers finishing. Finishing bib not on. Food Drop bag of musher x missing (just to be found sitting in the bag lineup afterall, right where it belonged, just the tired musher not seeing it). Someone accidently cleaning up stuff which still belonged to a parked musher. Dog Truck and trailer in the way on inbound trail. Second opinions needed about “skinny dog” in team “y“. Wayne on the phone from Carmacks…Doug calling from Dawson, Yukon News wanting to talk to Michelle Philipps, the Q300 champion. Wow I really had no idea what is all going on behind the scenes in just one checkpoint. All the wheels which are needed to turn smoothly. Dang, I think I was much too demanding in my racing days. As a musher I lived in my small little bubble, only realizing a fraction of what was going on around me in the race.

It is also a real eye opener how far the race is actually spread out. This year seems extreme on that front. While Hugh Neff once again setting a blistering pace out front, Fort McMurray mushers Randy MacKenzie and Christina Traverse are traveling far behind in the back of the pack. The difference in watching the different mushers efficiency is striking. While an Allen Moore gets more than an hour quality rest in a short 4-hour break, the mushers further back have a hard time finding any time to sleep although they stay sometimes 10 to 12 hrs in a checkpoint. Their dogs are beyond well rested. Christina Traverse’s team pulled the snow hooks when we tried to park them coming into Carmacks. Yet their traveling times on the way to McCabe are much slower, which can only be attributed to frequent stopping on the trail. All this well reminds me of my first tries on the Yukon Quest. Some of the long time volunteers sometimes remind me of that, that it also looked like a “yard sale” when I arrived in a checkpoint and rooted through my food drop. Veterans like Ed Hopkins have a mere 4 food drop bags in Pelly, some of the rookie mushers a whopping 8 bags and it takes them naturally a lot more time to root through all that gear. This is all part of learning.

When it comes to the Quest 300, it is exactly that, a learning race. Veterans Michelle Philips and Aliy Zirkle separated themselves from the rest of the field and battled the race out in an exiting 8-second finish. Both teams looked great at the finish line. Both mushers wore light cloths, a sign of them working hard trying to edge each other out. Third place finisher Jerry Joinson finished almost 12 hrs later at 9.55 am. All of the other 300 Mushers are still out on the trail as I write this. Quite a few of them will not finish for the banquet tonight. 2 of them, Lucy Tyrell and Deb Night have just made it into McCabe (32 miles before Pelly) around 10 am.

Meanwhile, the Quest 1000 is heating up for an exiting race into Dawson City. Personally I keep a close eye on Jake Berkowitz running a full string of 14 powerful dogs. He is executing a run rest schedule which has worked well for myself in the past. In all of the past three Quests I have run going north (07, 09, 11) Hugh was far ahead of myself into Dawson City. Sometimes more than 6 hrs. Yet I always caught him once we got off the Yukon River in Circle, or latest at the base of Eagle Summit. I am leaning myself far out of the window, and predict the same thing will happen. I am not sure, if it was wise of Allen Moore to chase Hugh as hard as he has been doing, although in comparison Allen has rested his dogs quite a few hours more than Hugh has. The race has a change in dynamics out of Dawson, with cutting out American Summit and the run “only” being about 105 miles from Dawson to Eagle. I would not be surprised if some of the front runners try to do that in one long run, after a 36hr break, specially considering by race rules that they have to take a mandatory rest break in Eagle of 4 hrs.

In 2009, Hans Gatt and myself were sitting in Eagle and were discussing our race strategies. Hugh had left more than 8hrs ahead of us, and Hans was convinced we would see him before Two Rivers. At the time, I had some doubts, 8 hrs seemed like an eternity to me. Despite all issues we had on Birch Creek with overflow, Hans proved to be right after all, as I passed Hugh going up Eagle Summit. Time will tell, if history will repeat itself and if Jake will be able to reel in the front-runners in the second half of the race. Than again, one ugly run, one dog in a bag at the beginning of a long run, can change things dramatically, for either musher.

Of course Lance’s performance comes as a surprise. Lance is a true champion and not going out without a fight. He currently keeps his runs short with only running to Stepping Stone, to enjoy their famous hospitality, resting a short 3 hrs.

Iditarod veteran Scott Smith has been running a very steady race but has dropped a bit of speed going towards Scroggie. After all, this race is new to him. I wonder if he will drop a dog in Scroggy and if that was the reason for him to slow down. Brent is running more disciplined than he has sometimes done in the past and his team has been looking powerful.

Hugh is going for the gold in Dawson. A few hours ago “gold digger Dawson Dolly” stopped in Pelly on her way to greet the Tok Musher. Nobody who has arrived in Dawson to collect the gold has arrived in Fairbanks first. Will Hugh change history?

Wow, I've never heard of them doing this before.

Yukon Quest Race Marshall Doug Grilliot announced that the mandatory layover at Dawson would be extended by four hours, from 36 hours to 40 hours.

Key race personnel, including veterinarians and officials, are required to be in place at all checkpoints in advance of mushers. The next checkpoint after Dawson is Eagle, Alaska which is accessible only by air.

The decision has been made in order to ensure that all support and logistics are in place to care for mushers and dogs. The combination of a re-route eliminating American Summit – which reduces the distance of the race by approximately 50 miles – and the pace of the front runners was the basis for the decision.

Kelly Griffin is the second musher to scratch. I don't know what happened. She is a veteran of the race. Lance has had a terrible time and is down to 7 dogs from a starting number of 14. He must keep at least 6 or he will be withdrawn from the race. So sad. But on to good things...

Smith revels in his role of underdog

You could call him stealth, reserved, or even a dark horse.

Scott Smith has been one of the pleasant surprises in this years race, at least for Yukon Quest fans. His name doesnt stand out as much as champions Hugh Neff and Lance Mackey, or even the new kid on the block, Jake Berkowitz. But for those who have been following him his entire career, his success should come as no surprise.

Smith is a rookie by Yukon Quest standards, but a veteran of the Iditarod, which he ran four times. Hes also completed numerous regional races. Smith is sitting in fifth place halfway through the race. He arrived in Dawson at 3:25 am Wednesday, with 13 dogs. Thats about five hours after the fourth musher, Brent Sass.

We put ourselves in a good position early, running in fifth. The teams doing good, I have them eating pretty well. I was hoping to be a little bit closer to the front-runners coming in to Dawson, so I could do some catching up. But nowits pretty spread out.

Still, Smith would be happy with fifth. He said his goal coming into the race was honestly just to finish, especially not knowing the trail.

You can get too far ahead of yourself thinking you can compete right away. Fortunately, Ive been running with a couple guys who have been great about giving me information. Jake Berkowitz and Brent Sass both have been wonderful about sharing their spots.

The big family atmosphere has been the best part of the Quest so far, he added and the biggest difference from the Iditarod. Here, the mushers, volunteers and fans all watch out for each other.

Whats been the hardest part? The trail for one, and then theres the temperature.

If the heat werent a factor this year, who knows what the race would look like. I dont think many dogs are having a great time.

Luckily for Smith, his dogs have been able to pull together and get him to the next checkpoint.

Our teams strength is probably just the unity, said Smith. I only have really 20 good dogs (in his kennel), so theres a lot of unity there. We go with what we have. And theyve got a lot of good race experience.

In fact seven of the dogs on his team for this race placed fourth in the 2012 Iditarod with Aaron Burmeister at the helm. So dont count them out.

Weve always kind of been an underdog in this sport. Quite honestly, I prefer it that way. Its kind of nice to keep a low profile. The people in the mushing world know who I am.

The race has only just begun

February 7, 2013 - 11:00am (recieved at 1:37am)

As I look over the standings in this year’s race I’m struck by a few things. Most of all I’m struck by how far out ahead Hugh is. I did some quick calculations paralleling his run/rest schedule to a similar run/rest schedule in Iditarod to see where it would place him. By my rough calculations it would have him sitting about four hours ahead of John Baker’s record-shattering run in 2011. This is quite remarkable, especially since his dogs are presumably not in quite as good of shape today as they presumably will be in a month from now (the general regard and my own personal experience has shown that, assuming the dogs come through the YQ healthy; they’re stronger physically in the Iditarod than dogs that sat out the YQ). The Quest has always perplexed me in this regard. How can teams get away with doing such long runs on such minimal rest and still hang in there, and why hasn’t a similar strategy been employed successfully in the Iditarod where the stakes are higher? The only difference I can figure is that the dogs are naturally moving slower because of the (generally, not always) larger loads being hauled, which somehow facilitates less recovery time needed for the dogs. I feel a little silly still scratching my head over this one after running three Idita-Quests myself but I really can’t pinpoint what causes this. Maybe we’ll see a bold, new strategy in this year’s Iditarod…

The other thing that surprises me is how far behind the leaders mushers can be in this race and still be within striking distance. History has shown that so much can, and usually does happen the last half of this race. Looking back at the 2011 times eventual champ Dallas Seavey was sitting eight and a half hours behind race leader Hugh Neff leaving Dawson. Dan Kaduce who came on even stronger than Dallas towards the end that year and, in my opinion had the winning team until he got turned around at Eagle Summit, was a whopping eleven and a half hours behind Hugh.

For teams to make up that kind of time usually two things are necessary: slow trail where the chasing teams are given enough race hours to see their strategy come to fruition, and a slowing leader. Up until this point Hugh has run a very similar strategy as his 2011 race. I distinctly recall myself, Hans, and Sebastian at Eagle that year in awe at Hugh’s unprecedented 21 hour non-stop run from Dawson to Eagle; a bold move to get out ahead of a storm that nearly did Hans in and slowed several teams down behind him. Of course it was especially remarkable after running so aggressively the first half. He then proceeded to break trail all the way down the Yukon River without losing much ground to the pack of drivers behind him who were sharing trail-breaking duties.

I just got news of the trail report from the driver’s meeting in Dawson. Sounds like the trail will be very slow to Forty-Mile then progressively getting better towards Eagle. From Eagle to Circle the trail is supposed to be in excellent shape. Assuming this prediction is accurate and no storms hit, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Hugh do the Yukon in three runs: non-stop to Eagle (especially since there’s a mandatory four-hour layover there), then two runs to Circle. It will most likely be a disadvantage for him to be breaking trail and I haven’t heard of any storms on the horizon he could potentially use to his advantage. From what I’ve seen from the trackers, the run stats, and Hugh’s interview, it seems that Hugh doesn’t have the fastest team. My guess is that Jake and Allen’s speeds are similar with Jake possibly having a slight edge based on some earlier run times I saw; especially if he leaves with 14 strong dogs. Jake also banked more rest on this last stretch than both Allen and Hugh which should help his speed relative to them.

For Hugh this seems like the obvious card to play if his goal is to win. It will force the hand of his competitors, possibly bringing them out of their comfort zones. Jake’s team looks strong and he appears confident as well. Allen is a little more stoic and hard for me to get a read on, although from their blog his dogs seem to be in great shape. In last year’s race Jake, for whatever reason, wasn’t able to close the gap while Allen and Hugh slugged it out all the way to the finish line. To do so this year he’ll probably have to just simply outrun them or hope for some weather to slow them down. If that doesn’t work there’s always Eagle Summit…

One guy who may just surprise everyone this year is Brent Sass. He’s run an uncharacteristically controlled, methodical race keeping good speed while banking more rest than all of the teams ahead of him. He does, however, have a history of fading towards the end. Maybe this will be his year.

February 7, 2013 - 2:45pm (received 11am)

Tough Moments. Being a race judge is fun. I truly enjoy my time in the checkpoints, the vibrant atmosphere of the race, the camaraderie, meeting up with friends, seeing dogs I have known for a long time, some dogs who used to run in my teams.

But boy, there are some real tough moments too. One being when I drove out to the Bonanza Road yesterday with Ed and Wayne to pick up Kelly Griffin. It's heartbreaking to see a capable musher scratch. Someone I know who is putting all her heart and soul into this for a full year, and then see the dreams and hopes evaporate in front of her eyes. It does not take much, for things to go south. One or two miscalculated runs, a dog in the bag on a real long run, and long those runs are from Pelly to Dawson, and the race comes to a premature end.

My phone has been ringing. The tracker shows Misha Pederson about 65 miles out, on the Scroggie side of Indian River Bridge. Misha is tough. I have confidence in her. Nevertheless, it is worrisome for her to only run for three hours then stop for about 12 hrs. That run through the “Black Hills“ can really kick your butt. It’s a constant up and down. Demoralizing. Lots of worries in a mushers head. Now add a dog in the bag to that and problems compound quick.

That is what happened to one of the greatest in the Sport: Mr. Lance Mackey himself. Nobody is immune to that. Lance had the pleasure of many great runs on this trail. He has been a dominant force. Now, in 2013, the 13 was not his lucky number. Things started going south before the race with his dogs getting “off their food“. Dropping four dogs in Carmacks, the writing was on the wall. On his way to Dawson, Lance simply ran out of dogs arriving with a small string into the Gold Rush town, he made the only logical choice and filled out a scratch from. Damn, that was tough seeing him sign that line. Taking the starting number of his sled, then collecting his vet bag, I almost choked up. These are unexpected moments for me in this race, of being now “on the other side“ of the game as an official.

While closely watching the trackers, Misha is moving again. We have made arrangements to keep an eye on her when picking up the last officials leaving Scoggie Creek from the Air. Gerd Mansperger from Alpine Aviation is giving us a report, flying along the trail to see if Misha maybe has teamed up with the other three teams, Dyan, Randy and Christina who are slowly making up their way to Dawson. Personally I have brought two snowmachines to town, and Fabian has organized a toboggan and dog crates in case we do have to go out and pick her up from the trail. So we are ready for any scenario coming up. All the while still hoping for Misha to continue, making it to Dawson in once piece, then taking a long and much needed 40-hour break.

Mushers go through quite a few emotional highs and lows out there. Sometimes things are even said, which should not have been said. I am now experiencing, that things are not different on the officials side. It's deeply troubling to read a newspaper article where Jake Berkowitz calls for a replacement of race personal because the layover was extended by four hours. Obviously he is not able to look outside his own little racing bubble. As a true dog musher, he should be happy to provide his dogs with four hours extra rest, same as most of the other competitors were when they heard about the change. Ultimately, in this race, its all about the well-being of dogs and humans. Things first have to be in place in Eagle and a safe trail has to be established first. Jake should know that in history this has repeated itself. Sections of the YQ trail had to be trucked. Decisions have to be made as they come up, as they are unforeseen. Iditarod (yes I dare to mention the other race here) has been “frozen“ in the past. Nothing is done by any race official, vet, volunteer or whoever is involved in this race, without any other thing in mind than the safety of everybody. Some decisions are tougher than other. I do not think I will ever get used to filling out a scratch from. That part sucks.

Nevertheless, enjoy some of the pictures from Dawson. While the race falls apart for some, others have the “race of their lifetime“. Like in real life…ups and downs are close together.

“The necropsy revealed the definitive cause of death was a condition called intestinal volvulus with bowel infarction,” stated McGill. “Blood and tissue samples will be sent to the lab for further analysis. Results are expected from those tests in four to six weeks.”

General belonged to musher Jake Berkowitz.

Race Marshal Doug Grilliot has been informed and officially accepted the results presented by the veterinary team.

According to wikipedia: "A volvulus is a bowel obstruction[1] with a loop of bowel whose nose has abnormally twisted on itself.[2] Bowel infarction results from restricted blood supply to the bowel, most often due to bowel obstruction or occlusion of one of the mesenteric arteries.[1]
Intestinal obstruction. Note the tense wall indicative of gas under pressure and volvulus.

Bowel obstruction is most often caused by intestinal adhesions, which frequently form after abdominal surgeries, or by chronic infections such as diverticulitis, hepatitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. The condition is difficult to diagnosis properly, as the symptoms may resemble those of other bowel disorders."

So it sounds like his bowel got a loop in it that cut off circulation.

Mushers are withdrawn for many reasons but it means that the race judges decided she was done vs. the musher deciding they were done. Mostly for this one, she was no longer able to be competitive. They can only keep the checkpoints open for so long because they are all run by volunteers. So if a musher is running 36 hours behind, they are no longer racing, but camping.

The Eagle checkpoint is one of the checkpoints that is not on the road system as the Taylor Highway is closed in the winter. This is why the layover in Dawson had to be extended. They had to have time to get vets and race judges flown in before the mushers arrived there. The checkpoint is run by my friend Wayne and Scarlet that I go visit every summer on the Yukon River. Wayne is a race judge this year as well.

It was a busy day yesterday and the night was not any quieter. From runs to rests, logistical movements, toasting volunteers and prepping.

In Eagle our two front runners got some food after caring for the dogs and chatting with media. Allen headed to bed for a rest first but Hugh made sure he booked his wake up call for the same time as Allens. Some of us wondered if Hugh would let Allen head out first but were proven wring when he called up his team with his familiar Awwwlrrrright 16 minutes ahead of Allen, the gap is another few minutes smaller.

Volunteers and officials headed back to the fire but not for long as just after Allen pulled out of the yard a team came flying up the road and Jake Berkowitz had arrived at Eagle. His dogs looked good and Jake was quick to head to the yard to bed and feed them. He headed out at 7:15 just after his mandatory was complete.

At 5:21 Brent pulled in. He had one dog in the bag and was also quick to bed and feed the team. I had a chance ot chat with him and here is what he had to say:

We had a great run the trail was good but is blowing in. Jakes trail was gone when I came through so going to get worse. On the American side you cant see the trail but leaders were feeling for it. The wind is at your back so you dont notice it until you cross the river and it hits you broadside. Still too warm. I have one in heat. She is young and doing awesome. Kyla Durham trained her and she ran the Quest last year with Kyla. The males are chasin her. The one in the bag was Kirk he just got tired- I carried him for 70 miles. Im leaving him here. We are moving well and dog team moving. Wish I werent so far behind those others..

At which point Brents focussed switched to asking about the leaders times, ordering a breakfast burrito after all he had just had a dinner one. He plans to spend just his four hours here.

Scott should be here any minute. I hear the village dogs howlingis it really already 7:30???

Just got the message that Hughes Net is supporting us this year with superfast never before had sat uplinks and that Kevin Abnett, our com manager of 20 years finished a rocket launch at Poker Flats and will set up the system today !!
Thank you, Hughes Net !!!

Checkpoint Mile 101 should be opening today and internet will be established latest tomorrow. Right now winds of up to 25 mph are reported on Eagle and 12Mile Summit. Hopefully the crew will get through anyway. We'll start reporting tomorrow or early sunday. Hopefully this will be an uneventful year for us.....

Oh we'll get through...

This is great news. Our Communications Manager Kevin is an actual rocket scientist and was going to have to miss this year to do a planned launch. They never can plan the exact day they are doing these launches because it depends on conditions. Here's the brief story. http://www.newsminer.com/news/local_news/article_5a391ff0-6d6a-11e2-b5f4-001a4bcf6878.html

But they did it so Kevin will be able to come to 101 for which I am glad. He's fun to talk to.

I'm almost ready to go. I just have to pull one of the spares out from under the cabin and load it in the back of the 4 runner, throw in the Christmas tree, which I just now undecorated, pack up my laptop, repack all the cookies and goodies (really a lot of those) I am bringing, and finish the ham (in the morning). Whew, 9 pm and I am going to head to bed after I finish this beer.

Oh well, it starts the usual way.... Eagle Summit is blown shut, so Peter Kamper is stuck in Circle and can't make it down to 101 tonight. No news yet if the rest of the crew made it up to 101 from Fairbanks.
Circle expects the first musher Saturday in the early morning hours, but the checkpoint is open. Right now no one is sure if the food for the Circle checkpoint got over Eagle Summit before it got blown shut this afternoon. If the summit is shut down it probably won't reopen until Saturday morning 9am.

Previously, there has been limited access to the summit of snow machines and photographers. This is the reason why. Too many packed trails and the dogs don't know which one to follow. It distracts them as does the people standing around up there. I'm sure it will be addressed by the mushers.

So now I am resting up and recovering. I'll work on my blog post after I take a nap.

I know you thought this thread was done for the year but I have a few comments to add, mostly about the Iditarod. The Iditarod is our other 1000 mile race that goes from Anchorage to Nome. It's is being run right now (hence part of the reason for me not being on here as much lately). The exciting thing that is happening right now is that Aliy Zirkle is in the lead. She is the wife of Allan Moore who just won the Yukon Quest. She is also the only woman who has ever won the Yukon Quest. Here is a video of what she carries in her sled bag. It's a good video. http://youtu.be/mVUiwMFewUQ

Here is the show about the Iditarod. It's the full episodes on youtube. I think they did a pretty good job. Lots of good scenery and you can find the following episodes from that one.
