Ok fellas here is the scenario. My buddys and I are making a survival weekend and we are limiting ourselves to only be able to bring what will fit in a standard wide-mouth Nalgene bottle. SO, lemme hear the ideas, you experts give me a list of what you would include. Here is a scenario of the area:
Beside a fast flowing river a the base of a mountain. basecamp will be in the forest, the forest type is mixed hardwood and pine. we will be in the woods all day friday, saturday, and sunday. SO LETS HEAR IT!

Oh god bud I can hear it now, Why don't you check out the stickys and run a forum search, you can save a lot of time and effort. Or not. Oh yeah ya may want to stop by in the intro section.
why a Nalgene use a metal bottle you boil water in it

cntrybo2: Before we give you any advice on what you seek, let us know a little about yourself in the introductions section. This will give us an idea of your skill levels and experience. There is alot of good information on the forums that can help you. I for one don't want to give advice on minimalist survival to somebody that has no business attempting that feat. I'm not saying that you fit into that category, but if you read through some of the posts on this, you will see what I'm talking about. Anyway, welcome to Wilderness Survival Forums.

Please check out the "Sticky" on "The Bare Wilderness Numptys" as I've been down this road waaay too many times to keep going over it. The one thing I would suggest you try to fit in that bottle is.....no...I'm NOT going to say it!

p.s.: Here's the "Sticky" I referred to:
http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=378
How big's the bottle and how wide is the mouth? You going without shelter? Tarps or tents?Making your own? What about blankets? Nothing? Carrying any kind of bladed tools, knives or axes? Cuz I'm pretty sure they won't fit in your bottle.
Recommendation so far would be, fill bottle with very strong liquor, park azz under tree, remain in same spot until liquor runs out. It's a thought. You look pretty well acquainted with outdoors from your intro, but it seems to me I'd pack a wee bit more stuff than what I can put into whatever the heck size that bottle is.
Need more than you can carry in bottle, and Trax asked some good questions.

OK, I will show my ignorance: what the devil is a Nalgene Bottle ??? I thought I had drank everything with alcohol in it. Is this a whoosy drink? Fill it with shine and crawl into it. You're gonna need more than it can hold if you are sober.

It's a plastic bottle Coot.
Contrybo2: Some great info on what to bring has been linked in the thread. If you just want to test your skills to see how little you can survive, or have fun on that's cool. I would recommend however that you bring the "stuff" that will keep you alive/comfortable/safe (pick one) just don't use it unless you need it. It would be a miserable weekend to discover that holy c*** sure wish I would've brought ________. After you've done this a time or two, you'll have a better feel for what you will need. For example, I would probably need more "stuff" with me than FVR or Beo. They practice minimalist trekking and I don't.

preamble:
first off, you will find that many of us here are paranoid about those who go into the wilds unprepared, under prepared and especially intentionally so we can't be responsible for the use to which you put our oppinions. please remember that we do not know you and what you will want to include in such a limited space will depend on your skills and what you can use.
that said; i would highly recomend a relatively small blade sturdy and sharp enough to shave wood for kindling if you plan to build a fire, should you need one.
i would strongly advise including two methods for firemaking, methods you know you can get a flame with when needed. if you skills are such that this means a bic lighter and a magnesium firestarter, or even just two bic lighters [so if one breaks or gets lost you have a fallback] then that's what i think you should bring. i like to put them on a lanyard so i can clip them to my pocket, wear them on my neck, etc. when i was tree sitting, i kept anything dropable i would need often on my gear loops. it saved me a 200' decent and a half hour prusik climb back up.
i advise a space blanket. they suck, in wind or rain, there's a strong difference between a night with the clothes on your back, and they cloths on your back under something reflective, wind and water proof. i don't know what temps you'll be facing.
i would recommend a sound method of water treatment. i think should bring a days supply of water for good measure, since you won't have anything to boil it in. if you've ever had water boiled in plastic, you'll know what i mean]. iodine tablets are a good choice. you could of course just drink straight from the river, but then that would be dumb while you have a choice not to.
what do you intend to do for food? you won't strictly speaking need food on a weekend trip, but you'll be much happier with enough to keep your stomach at bay. you may know it plays hell on morale. if you know your local edibles, you can be certain to have something.
these are just my ideas.

OK, so i have read the recommended suplimental readings you gentlemen have provided me. The biggest lesson i have learned is (no offense) but Sarge has confidence in no one but himself. I totally understand that this is a moderate undertaking but all parties involved are very comfortable in the woods and have a moderate depth when it comes to woodsman skills. We are all avid outdoorsman, and no this doesnt mean we shop at L.L. Bean and have a Bass Pro Shops credit card. It means we have all grown up stalking, tracking, trapping, and hunting not only terrestrial animals but aquatic and avian species aswell. This will be taking place in the mountains of Virginia. We are not foolish, we wont be 20 miles from anything, our camp will be approximately 3/4 of a mile from transportation and we will be 10 miles from the nearest community. yes, things can go wrong, but that is the case with many things in life. We feel this is just a good way to test our skills. I appreciate the response that suggested bring emergency gear and just not use it unless it is needed and i will take this advise. Now, fellow woodsman, please, lets here some advise, critiques of technique, and skills that must be honed before we take this journey.

When you get to whever your camp is going to be, don't rest until you've gathered more wood than you think you're going to need for the night. Make your shelter just big enough for yourself since your own body heat will be your heat source. Make sure you are a comfortable as possible and not sleeping on the ground. Use whatever native materials are availiable to keep yourself insulated from the earth. Camp close to good water and boil it. Have fun.

Ahh, but you most certainly meant to give offense and that's the way it was received. For you're information, Newby, I have a lot of confidence in most of the members here as they've more than proven they don't belong in the "Numpty" class. Wise a*s comments are NOT welcome here, they don't PROVE anything, and the only advice I'm going to give you is that if you don't follow the advice from the Wolves here just be sure you filled out those organ doner cards.

After reading your post, and this is my professional opinion since I work as a Ranger with the US Forestry Service, leave notice where your going, that way its easier for a SAR Team to reach you. We get these people all the time (no offense) in my job that say I have such and such experience in wilderness survival, I been to such and such survival school, and I been in the woods since I popped out my mama's womb, and I'm not Daniel Boone but damn near close and we're going into the woods for a week, a month, or however long and this is all I'm taking. We call those people moron's (again no offense meant) in my line of work. Survival is not something you throw yourself into like snowboarding for pleasure, its trying to stay alive since your were thrust into some kinda extreme emergency. All your skills are great and good but what will you do if (and I know your saying that won't happen) one of you gets seriously injured or both of get injured? Taking barely nothing makes a SAR teams job more difficult, a Ranger's job more difficult, and leaves you saying "I should've listened to the pack."
Do everyone a favor and go, just take what is needed and leave notice of where your going.
Sarge47

Okay, here's the only "down-to-earth" advice you're going to get from me. 1st, score a copy of Cody Lundin's book: 98.6 Degrees: The Art Of Keeping Your A*s Alive." Lacking that I strongly suggest one thing what Mr. Lundin suggests in his book & that is to make an imprint of the sole of each member's shoe on a square of aluminum foil with their name written somewhere on it so in case of emergency SAR can tell who's footprint is who's; it saves a heck of a lot of time in an emergency situation.
2nd: I don't know if you're Backpacking in or driving, but either way take a full outfit of gear for your 'Base Camp". That's your "Safety". From there I'd not go more than a short distance from Base Camp to do your Survival Training. This way if either of you suffer an accident you should make it back to your main supply area, hopefully you have a "Comm Link" of some sort there to reach outside help.
3rd: I recently bought the stainless steel cup that's made to slide over the base of the Nalgene Bottle and it doesn't take up much room. This cup is fairly large, has graduations on the inside, and you can use it to boil water in.
Finally, don't make the false assumption that I'm just a wise-guy; if I didn't care I wouldn't say anything at all and just let you toddle off into the woods on your own, facing what may come. Here's the thing you didn't mention knowing; part of Survival training is "Being Prepared". And that means with equipment as well as knowledge. If you think bad things can't happen to you then you're being foolish & immature. They can, and do, happen to anybody; you're not Superman! Also, please read Medicine Wolf's post over & over again; he knows what he's talking about!

Or anyone else here, but here are the basic guidlines for primitive camping up here. Take'um or leave'um your choice. But they work just about anywhere and in any wilderness setting.
More and more people are exploring our Natural Forests. Poor camping practices can destroy the natural character and beauty of the back country. We must all learn to use the back country wisely to prevent environmental damage.
Please do not feed the wildlife.
Primitive campers spending no more than 1 night at a campsite do not need a Camping Permit. However, a Camping Permit is required if:
you desire an emergency point-of-contact;
you stay at a campsite more than one night;
a campfire is desired during spring, summer, or fall fire seasons;
you camp using a vehicle for storage or transportation;
you are “group camping."
A Camping Permit will not be issued to anyone under the age of 18.
When planning and starting your camping trip, you must:
1)check with the local forest district office to determine where to camp OR if designated dispersed campsites are available;
2)bring sacks to carry out your trash; take a light trowel to help with personal sanitation; carry a small basin for washing;
3)and, let someone know of your trip plans.
Off trail campers need only do numbers 2 & 3.
Take a little extra time to select your campsite. Make sure it’s a well-drained area and where you don’t need to clear vegetation. Keep your campsite small.
If more than 10 people are in your group, a Letter of Authorization is required, in addition to a Camping Permit, from the District Forester 30 days prior to the date of camping.
All camping should be at least 100 feet from any stream or open water source.
Wash yourself, your dishes and your clothes using a container. Washing in a spring, lake or waterway is prohibited. Dispose of waste water at least 200 feet from all water resources.
All campsites must be at least 25 feet from the nearest edge of a trail, and the camp should be out of sight of the trail where possible.
Deposit solid human waste in cat holes dug 4-6 inches deep at least 200 feet from water, camp, and trails. Cover and disguise the cat hole when finished. Self-contained portable toilets are encouraged and may be required to be used at designated dispersed campsites.
Use of camp stoves is encouraged. Small campfires for cooking and warming purposes are permitted EXCEPT when the fire danger is high, very high or extreme and from June 1st to Oct 1st, unless authorized on a Camping Permit.
Put your fire OUT COLD and scatter the stone fire rings at “new”, non-designated dispersed campsites before leaving. Leave stone fire rings intact at established and designated dispersed campsites.
Only downed and dead wood within the immediate campsite may be gathered for firewood. Collect only the amount needed for your stay. Power saws are not permitted without a Fuelwood Permit.
Cutting, picking, digging, damaging or removing living or dead plant material is prohibited, this belongs to the wildlife. Edible wild plants may be gathered for one’s own personal or family consumption.
Horses may not be tied to trees.
Horse manure must be scattered at least 100 feet from the campsite.
All trash and refuse must be carried out. Leave the camping area better than you found it.
Respect other visitors and let nature’s sounds prevail. If you bring pets, keep them quiet and under control at all times.
There are no modern facilities, water, dump stations or utility hookups on some of the National Parks lands.
Stay Alert and Safe at all times.

That's the one; picked one up off of e-bay with a brand new Nalgene bottle. Old WV Coot, if'n your watching, that's what they look like & only real men drink outta them.
Jeepers. I think you guys scared Cntryboy off. I have to tell you, I'm a bit puzzled why all the Nanny Nay Sayers. It's just a week-end outing. Unless he's in some inhospitable terrain, like ice fields or extreme mountains, let him go. If they get hungry or thirsty enough, they'll go home. If someone gets injured then a whole pack worth of gear won't help much. If it's severe you'll still call for help. How far can you get from the truck in a day?
So give them some advice and wish them luck.
Let someone reliable know EXACTLY where you will be and EXACTLY when you will return. It could mean the difference between a SAR mission that starts in hours and one that starts in days.
Carbon steel knife
water treatment pills
Compass
Pealess whistle (Howler is good)
space blanket
two types of fire making (BIC, magnesium bar)
petroleum soaked cotton balls in a 35mm film can.
large garbage bag
A small L.E.D. flashlight like a Photon
A small fishing kit in a 35mm film can.
Clif bar
Wrap the Nalgene bottle with duct tape and paracord.
Good luck!

Here's the deal, Rick; if you ask MY thoughts on something then that's what you're going to get. This is a Survival Forum not a Day-Care! I'm not encouraging ANYBODY to place their life in danger or that of their compadres...that's called "enabling" and I don't play that. I don't "sugar-coat it, I don't keep my mouth shut. If they don't like the response then they should delve deeper into the topic and find out why we feel the way that we do, after all, they came to us. Don't ask if you don't like the answer. Maybe it was just a week-end, but then where's the next level? Ok, rants over!

I agree with Sarge, Trying to push yourself in the bush with minimal gear is dangerous, If they ask our thought then we should answer truefully and hopefully that way we point out their mistakes if any better than if we where to sugar coat it
I just think a week-end it's too much of a deal. If they had said a week or had said 40 kilometers from the nearest house, much different story. But they can survive a couple of days without food and since they'll be near a stream, water shouldn't be a problem even if they have to drink it untreated. Life's lessons and all.

i have not been scared off! just a firm believer in that a man can learn alot from sitting back and watching! Rick, i certainly appreciate your attitude and response and i would have to agree. We are not venturing deep into the backwoods and will probably stay within a mile of camp. As for Sarge, i appreciate your informative response, i take your advise with much appreciation and in your latter response you make a good point, this is not a day-care and people should post and reply on this site justly. With this said, i am not a child, and i expect no one here is a child, i know my personal limits and the limits of anyone with limited gear. I would not purposefully put myself in any situation where i would be lacking in gear. As for letting a reliable source know our location, I would think for the seasoned reader, this is a no brainer, i dont even hunt behind my house without telling someone where i am going let alone go in the woods for a weekend. I know none of you and you dont know me but i would not post on this site if i was still earning badges in the boy-scouts. i appreciate the positive responses, i will read the negative and know all are entitled to thier opinion. As for medicine wolf, 1) i am in Virginia not the northwest 2) I am a former SAR guy as well, where do you work now? thanks guys!

Here is a first draft list of what is going in the bottle thus far:
fishing kit (this will be incorporated with nice long sapling as well as trot-line)
6 snares
2 powerbars
waterproof headlamp (mini petzl)
space blanket
25' para cord
lighter
strike anywhere matches (heads dipped in wax to waterproof)
As for water, we are bringing a filter, we are challenging our skills not trying to get sick. we all know how to boil water, this is no challenge.
cntry - Actually, we do have boy scouts on here. We have a lot of ..... young men ....I won't call them boys on here. Sooooo. We normally turn a skeptical eye when folks want to venture off into the wilderness for survival. We had a couple that intended to spend three months in the Canadian winter with only knives. Grown men, by the way. I'm just a little less skeptical for a week-ender than the other folks.;)

You need to add a ziplock freezer bag or two. When you fill your bottle up with water, you need something to put the items in that you had in the bottle into. Also you might want to add something for signaling.
cntrybo2
03-16-2008, 06:50 PM
good point with the signaling device. Also, i forgot to mention, i will have my leatherman as well, we are allowed either two knives or a multitool. Good call on the zip-loc, i didnt think of that!
crashdive123

You may want to add one (or a portion of one) of those cheap, thin, plastic painters tarps. They don't take up much room (if you don't carry a full sized one) and they weigh next to nothing. This will help if you need to water proof a shelter that you're building. Maybe a trash/lawn bag or cheap poncho too.
mbarnatl
03-16-2008, 07:02 PM
What are you going to use if it rains? They have emergency ponchos that will fit in the bottle. Or you could use 3ml(or thicker) 50gal trash bags. Trash bags could be used for lots of things. You need to read through the "multi-use items" (http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1071) thread. There is lots of things in that thread to help you decide what you might want to put in it.

You get points from me on the following:
1.) You didn't run with your tail between your legs, you showed you had guts & stayed!;)
2.) You ARE assimilating the data provided here.:D
3.) You're not afraid to drink out of a NALGENE bottle, despite all the rumors
that doing so might cause Cancer!
4.) I hope you look further into that cup I mentioned earlier as it's a really
cool piece of equipment!
You lose a couple of points, however, for "Dissing" the Boy Scouts! True, most Troops don't teach outdoorsy stuff properly, if at all; but ask Rick about the B.S.A. Troop he works with...Really cool! 'Nuff said!
I had suggested a large garbage bag. You can use it as a ground cover or as a rain poncho if you need it. I don't see anything for water treatment either. If you use the petroleum soaked cotton balls in the 35mm film can, you will have a rain proof fire starter and a lubricant if you get blisters or chapped lips. All nice multi-use items. Don't take chances on the water, though. You don't have anything to boil with so take some pills.

Great choice on the matches & lighter. I would also take one of those Magnesium Bars with flint rod they sell at Wal-Mart for a Back-Up! Also a candle, if not two. I prefer the "Pink Lady" candles favored by Backpackers myself. Rick uses Tea candles and I've even heard of some who use Birthday candles. I didn't say anything earlier about a 1st aid kit like Mbarnatl did as I figured that was a given, but maybe not. One thing I've done is braid about 50' of 550 Parachute Cord into a belt and hang my knife from it. BTW, I'm planning on going into my own Survival Skills trek for a whole year with nothing more than the clothes on my back and what ever I can cram into a large Winnebago! (Sorry, couldn't resist!)

A Snow Peak Mini Solo Cook Kit fits over the Nalgene bottle also. But is more expensive than an a $6 "Olicamp - Space Saver Cup" or $7 "GSI Outdoors Glacier Bottle Cup"
Thanks, crash. I totally missed the filter. That would be my first choice by mine won't fit in a Nalgene. Of course the filter straws will.

We will be carrying them by hand, i could think of a multitude of things to do with a carrying strap.
to address some of the other previous questions, i think i will pack 2 70-gal. trash bags as well. I found some this evening that are very thin and i can compact them down together to a size smaller than a tennis ball. As for Sarge holding the B.S.A. comment against me, so be it, i believe we are all entitled to our own opinions right gentlemen! honestly though, my experience with the boy scouts in my area (and this is all i can comment on is personal experience) is they are just the boys that need a father figure in their life. The troops are weak, spineless boys being lead by weak fathers who are just doing it to feel good about themselves. I know this isnt par for the course but just my experience. thanks for all the info fellas, KEEP IT COMING PLEASE!!!

also, gave some thought on how to bring duct-tape, i think this would be useful to patch any holes in waterproofing material for shelter or boots, protect any wounds etc. I am thinking of coating my bottle with neat wraps of it, so that i can pay it off of the bottle and it is in useable form. thoughts?

Lots of ways to carry duct tape
Wrap around outside of bottle
Small lengths rolled on itself (or folded)
wrapped around credit card in wallet
I like to carry a few nails in my kit (making gigs, etc) wrap tape around nail
wrap around a pen (oh yeah bringing pen and paper a good idea)

it sounds as if you have a good bit of outdoor experience as well as some leadership skill. maybe instead of being critical of what i find to be one of the last remaining great programs designed to grow those boys who need a father figure into strong leaders and men of which america can be proud of (unlike the politicians and leader today) you should volunteer to be a scout leader that can teach these boys something. you don't have to have a son involved to be a volunteer. also think of what you could teach a group of boy scouts on this weekend you have planed about woods skills and survival.
as to your question of what to bring. check out these two sites. ive used a combintation of the two (adding some things and taking some out)
www.m4040.com
and
www.survivalandoutdoorsafety.com
my whole survival kit will fit in a nalgene bottle less my cold steel srk knife.
also what sarge said about the cup was good stuff. you might also think about some tin foil and 100lb test powerpro fish line. you can pack a tone in a small space.
best of luck.

The book I mentioned by Cody Lundin tells, among other things, a cool way of using both para-cord and duct tape with your Nalgene Bottle. You might want to look up Rick's review of the book, it's very good. BTW, we've got many "Scouters" here on this site, including Rick. I firmly believe that the scouts today are only a shadow of what they once were; (see my thread: "The Way Of The Scout".) However, that's where people like us can make the difference. Rick teaches his Scouts Survival skills as does many others here. Smok has decided to "step up to the plate" and help out. You never really appreciate life until you find how you can impact others, sort of takes the focus off of yourself.
We all can make a difference if we try. That being said, I'll try & locateRick's review of Cody's "98.6 Degrees...". It's an excellent read.

Thanks Sam, I keep forgetting about those!:D
Okay Country Boy, here's the link to Rick's Review:
http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1168
Not only did I e-mail Cody about his book, he answered back and even answered a question that Rick had, so I'm including that thread as well as I think Cody's e-mail might be of interest to you in your upcoming adventure. Remember, this man is considered to be one of the top Survival instructors & Author's alive today.
I hope it helps.

thanks for the links to the book review. i think i will have to go and pick up a copy.
cntryboy - You can fashion a small loop of paracord to your Nalgene with duct tape. Just fold it in half so you have a loop sticking up and then wrap the tape around the bottle. I use it to clip a bottle to my pack, to hang a bottle next to my bedroll, or as Cody suggested to lower the bottle into tight spaces to scoop up water.

If you fill your bottle with cash you could spend the time at your local Starbucks. OK OK part of your time. Most of your time if you fill it with big bills and or gold bullion!
One nalgene bottle. My only thought is where is the coffee? I mean; even instant would work in a pinch!
I have done the, only what is in your pocket. Coffee singles or packs of instant coffee work. The bacon needs to be double X triple wrapped. Cook in a foil pack and use the foil to make coffee after the bacon is done.
No bacon and no coffee? I'm not going! I wonder how many Spam singles you can get in a nalgene bottle?

As for Sarge holding the B.S.A. comment against me, they are just the boys that need a father figure in their life. The troops are weak, spineless boys being lead by weak fathers
See, there I was not holding anything against you until you said that. Weak spineless boys? I've never been a scout, I lasted about half of one meeting and got the boot, but those weak spineless boys could be out boostin' yer f***ng car...they're not. Those weak fathers could be down at the bowling alley suckin' down a few cold ones and bowling a few frames, they're taking time to teach these kids or at least spend some time with them, instead. Think these kids were sprung into the world and the first words out of their mouths were, "gee I hope I can struggle through the first ten years of my life without a positive male role model, I've always wanted to grow up to be an azzhole!"
I never condemned your plan to go spanking off with your wide mouthed bottle because I read your intro and said to myself "this guy seems to know his **** in the bush, who am I to criticize? It's only a weekender." I wouldn't do it, but fill yer boots. In fact, with all that experience, maybe you should think about sharing it with some youngsters, they could use your help.

I do a little "moonlighting" by writing about travel health at a travel blog called Gadling.com (http://www.gadling.com/).
A few weeks ago I wrote a post on this very subject, just thought it might be of interest. Here's the link:
http://www.gadling.com/2008/01/11/travel-safely-create-your-own-diy-first-aid-kit-for-the-road/
This kit is not intended for serious off-road travel or being in a remote location. It is a pretty decent kit for general first-aid only.
Trax, man, you make good sense! point taken and your right, i apologise.
Takes an adult to step up, bro but,I'd rather you gave some consideration to sharing your knowledge maybe with some area youngsters than apologizing to me or anyone here. I've got rhinoceros hide, lol, but you got some skills there no doubt. A big part of my job involves working with youth who have been in trouble or are "at risk" and my big push is always get 'em outdoors. If they don't learn anything at least by the time they get back they're usually too tired to go out raising hell.

OK here is a question for you guys! I have never made one but have seen them cited in many survival publications THE "SQUIRREL POLE". I have used snares before to trap game but have never this method. To those that may know it by another name, this is a long branch (usually 4-6' long) that is approximately 2-3'' in diameter. A series of snares is placed along this branch and leaned against a nut bearing or "squirrely" tree. The thought behind this is that a squirrel would sooner climb the pole on a 45 degree angle rather than straight up the trunk of the tree. This is pitched as a multiple fatality trap (trap more than one per setting). Has anyone used this set before? did it work? Are there any tips?
Here's a link to what you described.
http://www.m4040.com/Survival/Skills/Hunting%20and%20Snaring/Snares/Squirrel%20Snare.htm
Squirrels are just curious. They'll investigate anything new. If you prop the pole against a tree they will have to investigate it. That's when you snare them. They are quite effective and you can just about be gauranteed of a catch if you find a tree that a squirrel is actively working. Squirrels will most active early morning and late afternoon so you want to check the snare at least twice a day or a fox of other carnivore might help themselves to your dinner. Bon Appetit!
You can also use a rabbit pole to catch rabbits. The pole is four or five feet long about 1 1/2 inches around. Split one end about four inches and insert a small twig just to keep the ends of the split pole open. Since most rabbits won't run down a hole very far you can usually shine a light down the hole and see the rabbit. With your light still on the rabbit, slide the pole down the hole until the split end of the pole slides underneath the hair of the hare. Then start slowly turning the pole. The split end of the pole with catch the fur of the rabbit and twist it so the rabbit can't run. Just slide the pole and rabbit out of the hole and you'll have dinner on the hook so to speak. Be advised, rabbits can scream and bite.

OK fellas, we havent done the trip yet, we are shooting for a weekend in the latter part of May due to water temps in the area (no need to add hypothermia to the equation). As far as my current list goes, it is as follows:
12 - 20'' snares (this is enough for 3 squirrel poles and 3 random settings)
2 - 70gal trash bags
1- 25' section of paracord
1- small box of strike anywhere matches w/ heads dipped in wax to waterproof
1- lighter
10- small fishing hooks
150' 12lb test fishing line (when combined with the fishing hooks this will be enough line to make a trot line as well as a cane pole to pass the time and remain mobile)
Being that i carry a leatherman supertool with me daily i will have this luxury. we have agreed that one is allowed to carry either two knives or one multitool.
Lets here the feed back!!! what do you guys think drop anything? add something?

Something for water purification tablets or a container to boil it in (cup that fits on base of bottle or tin foil) - first aid supplies - whistle - small flashlight - don't know how cool it gets at night where you're going...just something to consider.
I have to agree with some way to treat water. I'd also throw in a space blanket. Hypothermia can easily occur in 50-60F temps particularly if water is involved. Fall in the creek or a night time rain could be very uncomfortable or deadly.

as far as water purification goes, we are bringing a water filter, this is noted in earlier posts. as for the space blanket, i have to agree with Remy, climb into a 70gal space blanket covered with pine boughs and leaves and you will find quickly that your body heat will definately work to aid its self in heating you up!

if you considered the two knife then you could put in a leatherman squirt and have the best of all worlds. its small but it still works prety good for moving hot items in and out of the fire while providing an extra small knife blade and a few other tools.
may consider adding some 100lb test fishing line. packs very small and can be used for many things that you may not want to use your cordage for. also plenty strong for setting a trout line in a stream or sewing up torn equipment or torn flesh. (make sure you have some kind of needle.)
a few luxury items might be nice i.e. bullion, hard candy, tea, a couple of packets of propel for electrolights ect.
- magnesium flint bar
-possibly a few exacto razor blades

Razor blade have lots of uses, Basicaly a small knife, They can be used as a scalpel for first aid is one use that they do well, But there are lots more
awfoxden
03-30-2008, 10:44 PM
a few ideas of mine would be lashing to a stick for a handle and you would have a small very sharp knife for small camp chores, cleaning fish/small game. you could also use them as scalpel as tony yuk pointed out. i thought that you could probably attach to a stick and create a fishing spear, especially if you put a sling shot band in that bottle. now you would have a hawiian spear. plus with the size of them you could add a few and not even know they were in there until you needed them. just a few off the top of my head.
about the idea of the sling shot band, they are cheap around 2.50 and have some different uses, i.e. turnuquit (spelling?), sling shot for small game, hawiian spear, if needed for some reason, could dismantle and make one length of tubing for a staw.
neccesity is the mother of invention and if you have something that already has a few uses and an unforseable need arises you may be able to improvise your need with what extras you have.
Sorry, gang. You won't find a razor blade in my stuff. Too much chance of a severe injury for the benefit in my book. Just picking the stupid things up poses a risk. Sorry, not for me.

I agree with not carrying razor blades under normal wilderness conditions. Besides, I usually have enough knives with me to share with the neighborhood.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not knocking 'em. They just aren't for me. I keep my knives sharp but you won't shave with them for the same reason. I just don't need them to be that sharp. I carry a pocket knife, a folder on my belt, my straight blade and there's a multi-tool in my pack. If I loose all of those I guess I'll just have to learn how to craft a knife out of shale or sandrock or some other nice crumbly stone.:p

Somewhere in all these posts we had a member post pics of his hand after mishandling a razor blade out in the field. (Maybe our other "Super-Mod & Forum Historian; Rick, can find them.) Anyone who's read Cody's book will know about how fine motor skills can be severly reduced in inclement weather.
Remy: You asked: "Like What?" Well, you can make a knife out of it, you can shave, you can cut your throat or wrists if the going gets too bad, you can use it like a scalpel, you can shave, you can make a knife.....
