Internet has been out for past couple of days. The last I checked the shelter was in the lead, so I got started a little on it today in my spare time. Just now seeing it was, in fact, the challenge that won. Haven't taken any pictures yet, as my camera is elsewhere at the moment, but I'm trying to make mine with absolutely no tools. 10 people voted so I expect to see 10 other shelters besides mine. Looking forward to what everyone makes!

Does it count as a shelter if I put some twigs together into a frame, since no real shelter is needed even while raining were i'm at presently?

I've got one a bit more woodsy that I'll post in a few.

The parameters:

Low 30s during the day

High 20s at night

A light coat of snow

Flurries forecast overnight

Windy, sustained 20mph, gusts to 30

I only had two hours




I chose a berm on the windward side as a base. There was one rock in place, and I gathered a few more. One main beam across those as support. Ribs on the windward side completely. Ribs on the leeward side until my time was half up.

This is looking into the wind with only the ribs in place. The leaf litter is only from dragging the wet material from the floor.

Roughly another hour of gathering leaf litter, and I am short of one foot thickness.

The good:

I was out of the wind.

The bad:

I still had a cold, damp floor. The only dry/semi dry material I could have collected was standing grass about a tenth of a mile away.

The leaf litter is too thin, not fully enclosed, and needed some sticks laid on top of it to prevent the wind from carrying it away. Assuming dark is what got me on time, I think I could have still gathered enough material immediately around me to close it in. If rain was of any concern, the draft (lean) on the windward side was not near steep enough. The same could be an issue if a heavy wet snow hit.

The leaf litter contained snow. I picked some out, but I am sure I would have been dripped on.

A fire, preferably a long fire, was out of the question. I was out of time and could not have gathered enough in the dark.




Not playing by the rules:

I would have donned a headlamp and made the trek after that bedding, finished enclosing, laid a drum liner on that, or stuffed a drum liner with leaf litter/grasses, and crawled in with a space tarp.

Roots dug out from pine trees and split by hand. Debris from the ground. If I had to have done it again, I would make a leanto. Looks good RX - one bit of advice if I may - and I know you were doing it without tools - if there is rain on the way, you don't want your tops to stick out the way they are - they will allow the water in. Nice job though - looks cozy.

Thanks. I would have liked to have took off the ends, but I had too many of them break shorter than I needed, so I just chanced it. My main idea behind this one was so I wouldn't need very strong cordage, and something that would be holding heat in and/or shield from the sun. If I were to stay in it, I would have definitely built it in the woods and not in an open area as it is currently. I also laid down an insulation bed. Small boughs on bottom, weeds on top of that, a layer of pine needles, and the a few ceder boughs as I find them soft and aromatic.

Took a little time while on my lunch break today to build a shelter. As I said in another post - it almost feels like cheating. This took all of about 15 minutes and the only tools involved was a small pocket knife to cut the saw palmetto. If I were actually going to spend the night I would have put a thicker bed of pine needles inside, made it a little longer, cleared an area right in front for a small fire.
