Is this a hobby for most of you guys?

Just asking because I have no idea why who'd wanna sleep out in the cold with only a knife. I'm not dissing anyone but I just don't understand.

I am a survivalist, based only on homesteading and preparing for economic collapse. Ive never even thought of putting a pack on my back with the bare necessities and try to live like a prehistoric Homo- habilis. Until I came to WSF I didnt even know you all existed out there. :)

well, i don't want to sleep out in the cold with only a knife, but it's nice to know i could.

on the other hand; out in the somewhat cold with my fleece, a knife, a tarp and my hammock i'd volunteer for, most of the time. but then i'm the kind of guy who sleeps out on the back lawn in the summer.

most of us aren't the bare essentials types, though many of us value the ability.

when i go spend a day in the woods with my knife, it's usually for a project, like a day out carving, collecting pitch, feathers, etc, or making a primitive bow, for it's own sake. that's different for me.

i do tend to romanticize minimalism, the knowledge to make things with my hands and even the skill with which primitive peoples have lived in their environment at least as adeptly as some have cultivated it. it's an ideal.

First off i'm not a prehistoric Homo- habilis, but I camp sorta primitive, using only gear that was used in the 1750s to 1780s, sometimes I go more modern but that's just me. Do it like a historical researcher or archyologist trying to do it like the old ways. My son does it too, just what I like.

I came here looking to expand my skill set for SAR training. lol. I've always kinda had the whole "economic collapse" theory in my head though...My dad had bug out bags and ammo stockpiled in my closet (only one big and empty enough) when I was a kid. Mom used to complain all the time about him raiding our clothes to keep them up 2 date. Dad used to complain 'cause I raided the ammo for target practice when I ran out. :)

As for sleeping out in the cold with only a knife, I'm not a moron. I pack what gear I need to be comfortable. When TDW goes, I end up being the sherpa for the group gear as well. Could I survive without it? Sure. Do I do it regularly for fun? No. Cold weather injuries and other things of that sort are best to be avoided if at all possible, but I do practice skills necessary such as shelter building, fire starting, etc. etc.

I'm really exaggerating on the sleeping outside with just a knife, I know from reading the posts you are all pretty well orginized and equipt. Up until lately I thought is was just a hobby.

is doing what you do a hobby? see my earlier thread obsesion or passion, i plan on an emergency so i have my bunker and my stores plus it's fun for me other than my wildlife not much else intersts me out of doors i have always said that we as a human race have lost touch with so much of our skills in such a short time, one only has to watch ray mears bushcraft to see that even some of the indiginous tribes of the amazon have lost the ability to sart a fire by friction and these are people who are still stone age in most concepts

i see that you prepare for the "what if" scenario we here do the same thing sure you can own all the latest toys but what happens when that fancy gps takes a dump or gets broken during a rabid mouse attack two things always attached to my body via lanyard my leatherman and a firestarter i have gotten very good with it lately as i have dedicated 08 to fire skills althought wild edibles will always be my number one.

quick scenario "what if" hopeak attacked your place via ultralight then marcraft hit you with nerve gas and you had to flee with what you could grab in 30 seconds what would you do?

as an illustrative example, a friend and i almost indefinately extended our trek in the sierras during high summer several years ago when within one half hour his water pump KO'd then his wisperlite broke, caught fire then melted.

Good question WE, I never thought of turning the tables on what I do. I think what I do is a lifestyle that best matches my personality. A bit of a hobby as well taking a raw piece of land and building it to what it is today.

Its been years since i've lit a fire without a tiger torch.....good points.

Searching for something different.. to be able to do what most others in society will not, could not, cannot do... An interest in being out there gaining solace. A hobby of necessity to be able to stay out there in one piece. Now my life is much like your's "BRAGG". But I spent 34 years as a Big Game Hunting Guide and Bush Pilot.

34 years times 120 days a year is a lot of my life living in a 8'X8' tent with a client.

Bragg - I have said this many times before but my concern is more natural or man made rather than social. I plan for some weather event or some situation that could have an impact on me/family such as a truck accident involving chemicals or that sort of thing.

My reason for being outdoors has much more to do with the skills that have been lost over the last couple of generations. As we've moved more and more into a digital age we've moved farther and farther away from the skills our grandparents used every day. I don't want that to be lost in my family and I want my kids and my grandkids to have those skills. Being able to eat as you walk through a woods or knowing what animal just walked through there or knowing how to save yourself if you wind up in a bad situation are just great skills in my estimation.

Fishing, hunting, camping are some of my hobbies. Survival is a mindset and skill I hope to never use which allows me to enjoy my hobbies with more freedom.
