Alaska- How do you do it?

Okay, for those of you actually living in Alaska, how do you do it? Now this is mostly just for curiosity sake- I have no intention of running off to AK and building a lean to!:banana: Were you born and raised in Alaska? If so I can see why you'd stay. Are any of you transplants?

I guess I wonder what the primary occupations are. For instance, I'm a chef. Presumably there are restaurants in AK! Certainly in the larger towns. But it would probably be tough to earn a living by cooking. I imagine a mechanic can make a good living anywhere & everywhere. We all need to keep our cars and trucks running, and I suppose a guy who could work on sleds and gennies would do pretty well.

I imagine there must some money to be made off of tourism, at least in the summer.

Again, I am just wondering. Please feel free to chime in with any info or good stories about life in Alaska!

Just like any location, there are things you must learn to survive, or at least to live a bit more comfortably. Here it is a matter of life and death but so is learning the skills needed to live in a big city, a swamp, tornado alley, etc.

First off, one must have a head bolt heater to heat the block of your car. This means, you plug in your car. Most of us also have a battery blanket, transmission fluid heater etc. We have plugs in at out jobs and at our homes. There aren't any for customers in such places as restaurants or movie theaters. This means you either leave your car running, have auto start, or don't spend too long away from your car depending on the temp. At -25 or colder, I wont go to the movies.

The draft coming from my front door was just too much so I hung a cover over the door and put a big floor pillow in front of it. We normally have a rolled up towel that we push up to the bottom of the door, but it wasn't cutting it. This is frost built up on it just from tonight.

Since we live in a dry cabin, we haul our water in 5 gallon jugs and transfer them to the 55 gallon barrel right inside the door. This is run to the kitchen sink and the shower by a small pump. I currently have 35 gallons which is pretty good. I don't want to have to go get water when it is this cold. We have a bulk water station but you still have to stand outside of your car to fill the jugs, all the while holding onto the cold metal water dispenser, think gas station handle. It's just my 14 year old son, my 11 year old daughter, and myself. We use about 7 gallons of water a day on average.

Also, at this temperature, we do not use the outhouse. We have a porta potty that we use, sits in the shower room, and then I empty it into the outhouse. Not a real pleasant job but much more pleasant then going out to the outhouse and dropping trou!

My experience in Alaska was that most of my co-workers were transplants from the lower 48: Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, New Jersey, Minnesota, Wyoming, Maine, South Dakota & Texas. Additionally, there are a lot of foreign-born workers that moved to Alaska to work in the seafood industry. I was based out of Anchorage and it is similar to many other US cities with many well-known franchise businesses and big box retailers. The biggest difference being a resident moose and bear population within the Anchorage Bowl. Anchorage is Alaska's largest city, but just a tiny footprint in a very big landscape. Life in the bush will have different demographics depending upon the specific location.

Major employers are tourism, seafood, energy, and government. Some of these jobs are seasonal and many of those folks have other sources of income during the off-season.

I've been watching a bunch of episodes of "Selling Alaska" where people look to buy homes and are shown 3 properties from which they select one. Their budgets and requirements vary--places featured range anywhere from $150 thousand up to $1.2mil, with water views, beach frontage, lots of land, green houses, sheds, etc.
But here's the thing: They all look poorly insulated with thin, flimsy windows and none were built of stone even tho there were plenty of "rocks" all around. I know timber's plentiful, but it seems, so is stone. Even the really expensive houses were frame but not the heavy duty, solid type that I've seen say, in Utah and Colorado. Why is that?

I'm not familiar with that show but since you mention beach frontage I know they are not homes from the Interior. Down on the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage, they have the benefit of warm Japanese ocean currents. Their temps are much more mild then ours.

Now, let's talk about out light and dark cycle. Right now sunrise is at 10:26 AM and sunset is 2:54 PM. In the summer, it is reversed with 24 hours of daylight.

I have watched that show too Nessie, and you would think that people that build houses in Alaska would build them with 10" walls that are double insulated, and with 2 or 3 kinds of alternate heating systems, but they all just look like substandard type houses to me!

Ok I looked it up. That show, Buying Alaska, was based out of Seldovia. That's over 600 miles south of me though other Alaskan members here live closer. I must say, our construction is much more arctic based lol. Alaska is a huge state with several different climates. As I said before, the climate down there has the advantage of being near the ocean, which ALWAYS means warmer in any state.

Here in the interior we have what is called discontinuous permafrost, meaning 50-90% of our land is permafrost. We build on it because there is no other alternative. But there are ways to do it such as my cabin which is built over a thick gravel pad and up off the ground so as not to thaw the permafrost it is built upon. If it stays frozen, it's ok. It's just when it is thawed, there are problems.

And on top of everything, they just had a pretty good shaker in the southern part of the state. My facebook page is afire with earthquake stories.


Officials say the quake's preliminary magnitude was 5.7, and its epicenter was 55 miles southwest of Palmer and 25 miles west of Anchorage at a depth of 33.5 miles. Since the first report, the magnitude has climbed to 5.9.

Thanks, 1stimestar! Some very good info there! Funny, my folks lived in North Dakota for a long time and the people there did most of the same kind of stuff. Everyone's vehicles have block heaters and when they have to park somewhere that they can't plug in they leave the vehicle running, for hours sometimes. One winter they had three vehicle batteries freeze solid and break in the same week. Temps there would hit right around the -40 F mark with some frequency.

I don't know if I could live in AK or not! I know it's beautiful country but it would be a challenge in the winter. Even the Great Plains sucks in the winter, getting real tired of snow and cold after 43 winters here. The coast may be warmer but I don't think I could handle tsunami warnings and six feet of snow at a time. Seems like it would rock in the late spring, summer and early fall though! Main thing is I don't know what I would do to earn a living. In addition to being a chef I do have a degree in IT, but I don't think there's a lot of jobs programming Cisco routers up there. I worked for my dad doing construction many years ago but I suppose the construction and remodeling season would have to be pretty short there, too!

Chefs and construction workers can always find work in the summer. Of course, those construction guys have to dang near kill themselves working very long hours, a lot of times 7 days a week. But they bring home some major paychecks. They have to bank it though due to having to live off of unemployment all winter!

1st really got my curiosity up so I spent a little time checking out properties for sale from Fairbanks & Anchorage to Seldovia ranging from $150K-$500K. I still didn't see any stone/brick/cinder block homes and very few really substantial timber homes. Most had front doors that incorporated glass and most windows didn't look as though they were double or triple pane. The cathedral ceilings didn't seem to have much if any insulation between them and the roof and the overall impression was that it would feel cold and drafty inside.

Comparably speaking some of the homes I've seen in Utah (Alta & Solitude region) where the temps don't fall nearly as low as in AK, the homes felt like fortresses--massive (not in size) solid and insulated.

Very perplexing.

As I've said, we do not build with stone. It is not good insulation and tends to fall over with all our earthquakes. Seriously, we can have thousands a day. Lots of homes have triple pane windows and most all have at least double pane. Triple pane is very expensive. We did have a company that made them here. They were called Alaska Windows. They went out of business. So all windows have to be shipped up here. As far as the cathedral ceilings, yes they are ridiculous. Such a wast of space that has to be heated.

$150,000 homes are either very old or very cheap so I would never expect to see a house at that cost with triple pane windows. Most small cabins cost at least that much up here in the Interior. I have double pane windows and a full second floor, no loft which are very common in cabins.

Alaska is vast. We are 770 miles SSE of Anchorage so we are not what people think of as Alaska.
Today, and for the last week or so, it's been in the mid 30's. We do get snow on occasion. The weather here is radically different every year.

I consider the Tongass to be a place of magic. It really has to be experienced to understand I guess. Ocean, forest, and mountains as far as you can see.

I know of no other place with 200 ft spruce trees whose branches touch salt water in high tide.

Sorry, now I'm just bragging. It's not without it's cons. Suffice to say, if you come here you either stay forever or run as fast as you can away. :)

I have a cost of living expenditure. I save alot of money in gas cause I don't drive far to work, maybe 40 miles a day. I drove 100+ in TX.

In the summer and fall, I must cut my protein budget in half because of crab and fish.Ok, maybe a third, but a guy could easily make it 100% if he wanted to eat it every day. I like pork so much I've considered raising some. :)

I lived in Bethel for 18 months - would NOT recommend it! Lived in Talkeetna 4.5 years. Much better but not great.

Have enormous respect for those that choose to live there for life, especially for those guys that live in the bush year-round. I have no idea how they stand it and will never personally find out!!

The first time I went to AK was driving a seriously overloaded '68 VW bus in late November 1989 (and no, it did NOT have an auxiliary heater!). 65-below-zero temps up in the Yukon Territories on the way. That sucked @$$ in the extreme!! Really stupid and life-threatening, but I was young and ignorant at the time - that's my excuse & I'm stickin' to it!

Alaska, due to the short nights and the long days, is really a magnet for juvenile delinquency. Towns, where you live in city blocks, are rampant with bad kids, drugs, and pedophiles.

Pro's and cons. I got here at 18 yrs of age and I was outta control and lacked a mission and adult supervision. I know the underbelly of these small towns. We have meth issues in a city of 8600 with a peripheral population of 5000 on an island. We are a supply source for more remote towns. When Billy Bob shows up in Ketchikan off a crab boat or from another island, he gets his supplies whether they come from Safeway of Columbia.

Ports are interesting.

VERY wise choice to not consider Anchorage. That town's a total sh!t-hole.

I lived there for about 4 1/2 months before moving to Bethel - and that was a major improvement! Bethel sucked too, but WAY better than Anchorage.

Glenallen seemed relatively OK when I was there in '89, but I just drove through, so I really don't know too much about how it is now. Willow is (at least was, when I was there) a pretty nice, quiet little town. You might check it out.

Me? I have spent many years in the restaurant biz. Also spent many years as a welder fabricator, some mechanic and management experience also. We are bot sure about the interior yet. But what we have seen of Tok it looks nice.

Yikes! Your part of AK in winter would really suck! Again, that's "only" about 20 degrees colder than the bad parts of winter here but I bet that vehicles don't care for it at all!

You have to plug them in and even then sometimes they don't want to start. Also, tires go flat in these temps. Just happened to my co worker this morning. Th cold breaks the seals. One time I went out to my car from work and put my key in the ignition, turned the key and crunch. All the teeth in the ignition just broke right off. Problem was, the car started. Other problem was, none of the electronics got turned on. So lights, heater, electric windows, no workee. You can't drive at -50, in the dark, with no lights and no heater without being able to roll the window down.

One time, I was driving my husband's older car at it must have been about -50. That sucker froze up going down the road. Just died. That was not fun. I didn't have a cell and didn't have "my" cold weather gear in the car since it was my husband's work car. Luckily, there was a bit of traffic on the road and someone stopped. Yes, I was unprepared, once.

Once when I was a kid we were heading out to go to school and we checked the thermometer- it was 37 below zero! Well, we got about five miles from home (lived 18 miles out of town) and the drivers side door was slightly ajar. My mom opened it and slammed it shut and the entire window just crystalized, shattered and came in on us! There wasn't a single piece bigger than my thumbnail. Needless to say we turned around and went back home.

If you haven't actually experienced 70 below in a stiff wind, you may find out you don't like it as much as you thought you would. Only one way to find out for sure, though.

No, I get it. Nothing like extremes of many kinds to make one feel really alive.

Alaska! I live on the third largest Island in the U.S. (behind Hawaii and Kodiak), Prince Of Wales is a unique southeast location since we have literally hundreds and hundreds of miles of roads on this island. There are around 10 communities on the island that are almost all connected by road. you still have to fly or take a ferry to get here but once your here you can actually drive for hours, a feature not found on many other places in the panhandle. Since I have been to culinary school and have also lived in Seward (Kenai peninsula), Palmer (outside of Anchorage) and Ketchikan I can answer the original "employment" question pretty accurately. As far as cooking goes...Seasonal Lodges are excellent choices, but there are also many restaurants and they have a hard time keeping employees. Ferries, canneries, logging camps and commercial fishing boats all require cooks. I like to call myself a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none. I do a lot of carpentry since my dad is an independent contractor and often needs help with his jobs. I purchased a small piece of land in my town and built my own house on it and moved in by the time I turned 19. The land and the house have cost me probably 30,000 together. I got a cheap piece of land and did all the building, wiring, plumbing, and finishing myself. I also salvaged material whenever I could. So I have my Culinary Certificate, Construction experience, small engine repair, firewood cutter, blacksmithing, gunsmithing...all of which I have used to make cash at one time or another. I even worked at a grocery store right after I got married and was the Freezer Department manager and freight delivery guy. In short, you have to be willing to do just about anything when you live in a remote location. whether it be power washing boats and packing fish in the summer, or shovelling snow and trapping in the winter.

Holy cow, 1st. I don't know how you do it. I whine about the occasional negative temps we get here in TN. I couldn't imagine dipping down into the negative as far as ya'll get up there as frequently as you get them. The worse I've experienced is -17 and I didn't like it one bit. No ma'am. I was told it was an old crabber that had gone in for shelter and found a rock instead, must have ruined their day. Its been there about 15-18 years so it was before my time. Its a cool place to check out though. Just one of MANY sunken boats and ships around here.

On a good day we can have a 22 foot tidal exchange. If I were to photograph that other boat at low tide would it then no longer be a sunken ship simply because it was totally exposed?

In town I'm sure they do but out where I live and in the majority of the state, it's your property to do with what you want. If you want to build a crappy little house with an outhouse and no electricity, you just build it. Now down south, such as in the Anchorage area where it is more populated, it is more like the lower 48. That's why many of us make fun of Anchorage. In some other, sparse areas, such as on the north slope, they do have rules, but they are not really building codes. Such as a non Alaska Native can not build a permanent structure on the tundra. That's why my friend Sue lives in a "twinkie".
