View Full Version : Why matches?

In all the survival books I've read, and I've read a few and own a few, they all say, "carry a plenty of matches". Okay, why matches? Why not carry a couple of cigarette lights? Is there an advantage to having matches over lighters?

I'm still learning!

I'm not crazy about matches but they do have their place. A lighter is great but they have problems. First off, they don't work well at high altitudes. And they have a knack for being empty when you need one. Now a funny story that's totally true; I have a lighter that I usually take camping, and when I get home it sits by my computer. I have a bad habit of playing with it. Well, last time I was out camping it struck once and died...you guesses it, out of fuel!:tongue_smilie: Before I packed it for my outing I neglected to refill it. At any rate, BICs have a tendency to not work when they get wet, at least til you can get them dried out. Of course on the plus side, they generally burn for a long time, long enough to get damp tinder lit. And a lighter can start many fires.

Matches are a great backup. If you get the good ones like the UCO Stormproof matches they'll pretty much burn in any conditions, wet or dry (do keep the striker dry, though).

Most of us like to have multiple means of creating fire. Some folks here can use a bowdrill or hand drill. I'm partial to ferro rods (aka "fire steels").

They store indefinitely....

I have some from when my grandfather lived in this house....still work.

I carry several methods for fie starting. Obviously Keep them Dry.

Bic lighters don't like cold and won't light unless you keep it warm.
I can't remember who posted a method to keep your Zippo from drying out. Cut a length of bicycle inner tube and put it over the lighter to seal it. When you need to use it Roll down the top and strike away. I haven't tried this but thought it was a good idea.

Matches have there pros and cons, so do lighters, mag bars, sparkers, etc... This is why many of us subscribe to the redundancy theory: We carry multiple ways of starting a fire.

In the same mind set, as we carry multiple ways of ignition... we will carry multiple forms of tinder. I will have a few plain cotton balls, a few petroleum jelly cotton balls and my all time favorite FAT WOOD!

Echo likes tea candles, I dont.... so you can see there are many option but it will boil down to personal preference.

Andrew

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wj2N_W9jANk

The ONLY downside to them, as you see, they burn FAST. There will be no lighting the match and then figuring out what to burn.... Get your burn stuff ready and THEN light the match! :-)

I guess I have a match fetish.
I have parafin coated strike anywheres...everywhere.
Match safes, taped to sheaths...you get it.
So, the last time I started a fire, I used the lighter in my pocket kit.
BTW, parafin coated matches are a lot more "windproof" than any lighter I've ever seen.

Like has been said, multiple methods are the way to go. That way you have back ups

What do you do if you lose the striker? Will they light if struck on another rough surface? I carry the strike -anywhere matches along with other means. Have to admit, that's a tough little sucker, once you get it going. Thanks for the vid.

P. S. I keep mine stored at home in a clean, sealed, 1 qt paint can (Home Depot) to keep grandchildren safe.

Time for another history lesson!

The term "match" is an old one and was not first applied to the devices we know as matches. These devices we have that produce a scuff induced flame are from the early 1800s, but they are still going strong today.

For nearly 100 years matches were the top technology for making fire. That was in an era when flames still ruled as the number 1 cooking, heating and lighting method. When you woke up in the morning the first thing you did was strike a match to light the kero lamp, cause it was still dark outside when you rose. Every morning a fire was started in the cook stove. Even until the early 1950s most women had to light the gas range with a match to cook. A big box of "Kitchen matches" was a necessity in every home and another box rested on the fireplace mantle or was handy for lighting the gas heaters in each room. I remember decorative match containers handging on the wall of the kitchen in my G-mother's home long after the wood cookstove was replaced with an electric unit.

In a society where smoking was almost universal among males, and the lighter had not been invented yet, every man carried matches in a pocket or in a container in his pocket. From WW1 until the 1990s a book of matches was included in each meal of rations issued to troops in the field (I am not sure about the MRE). I still remember those books of green, low quality matches that refused to light when the least bit damp or sweaty, which we always were.

When I was a kid there was a trend where the cigarette makers attached a book of matches to each pack, supposedly ending the constant search for a "light". I think that failed due to the problem with packing the setup into the cartons.

The trend toward lighters did not start until WW2 when Zippo became a part of every GIs' pocket gear. From there we have blossomed forth to windproof, stormproof, waterproof, butane, naptha and such, but tradition dies hard and we often still hear people ask; "Do you have a match?"

We also worry, as has been noted, about our children "playing with matches", but today most child ignited fires occurr when children "play with lighters"!

Many people keep matches as a back-up; I keep everything else as a back-up. You can buy a box of 500 Strike Anywhere matches for about $1.30 here at Ace Hardware. Coat them with melted paraffin and store them in a water-proof match safe; then cut out a disc of sandpaper the size of the top of the case and glue it to the top...or to the inside of the top if you prefer. My back-up is a fire steel! :cool2:

They are all tools in the tool box....so what ever you perfer.

I have a pill bottle that I leave in my box blind, to light a propane heater,....as it keeps your fingers away from the flame when it lights.....This ahs been in that blind in the bush for several years, and even survived the mouse invasion.
They still light just fine.

As a matter of fact....I have these pill bottles/w matches stashed everywhere, as well as Bic's and firesteel/mag blocks....

everyone has different comfort levels, depending on how much they have worked with a method and the trust they have in that method, If you want the best way to start a fire, and practice this in a controlled conditions- then stick your hands in ice cold water for a few minutes then try to start a fire with your chosen method. I carry my gear in layers, but my go to method is a striker and double ought steel wool. I personally use strike anywhere mathches on a daily basis at home for heat and always have a dozen boxes around, but you have to watch out for humidity, i also have alot of lights, but if in pocket they could empty out, what not carry all three, one in your pocket, one in a vest one in a pack for me fire and shelter is life, so why rely on just one, i mean really how much does a dozen matches a light and a stiker weigh?
just my thoughts and experience on this one of my favorite skills to practice, but it has been said many a time, don't just know a skill, own the skill

uh,yeah, thats the point (and notice the disclaimer of practice under controlled conditions) one of the indicators of hypothermia is not being able to touch your pinky finger to your thumb, try lighting a match or lighter that way, the best way i have found is the flint and steel and double ought, but thats just me..

My hands get cold enough, often enough to not be able to rely on my lighters. Strike anywhere matches are much easier when your fingers are cold. Plus, in the temperatures we get, butane freezes. Keeping it in an inside pocket makes it pretty unhandy. Plus, trying to light the dog cooker (alcohol stove for cooking dog food for sled dog teams), it's easier to just throw a match in and not have to worry about lighting your glove on fire lol.

One method I like and have on hand is the 9-volt battery and steel wool method, also Ruth looked so hot doing it on Man, Woman, Wild! (sorry Hunter...snicker.) How does one start a fire with a battery and steel wool? I've seen Les Stroud do it with a 12 volt battery, but where does steel wool come into play?

You shred the steel wool and place it into your tinder bundle, which is at the base inside your kindling. Then you hold the battery by the very end and stick it into the steel wool. Be careful, it gets really hot really quick! :cool2:

No, they will not (assuming you mean UCO Stormproof or other waterproof matches). In a normal striker you have the white & red phosforus mixed together on the head. With strike-on-box/safety matches the Red Phos is on the striker. This assures they can't be accidentally lit. A small portion of the striker is consumed by the match when the thing ignites. One thing I've found with every brand is that the matches can be wet but the striker must be dry. If it gets wet, you're out of luck until you can dry it. While wet it's pretty fragile. I've had some luck blotting off the water and shaking the striker vigorously. Obviously the best thing is to keep spare strikers sealed up and dry.

Matches are my last resort for the most part but last time I out they saved the day. My lighter was dry/empty and I couldn't locate my firesteel. Actually had to dip into my backup UCO match stash.

Do not worry about Ms, Crash, I guarentee that Crash was outside on the patio or some other appropriate spot. Ms. Crash has him very well trained, as in eating out of her hand. He is a smart man and has complete knowledge of which side of the bread carries the butter.

That battery and steel wool trick works with any size battery. You can pull the steel wool into a long string and use AAA, AA or any other size. You can also use a piece of wire to get a spark off the poles and into a tinder bundle. Might be difficult with frozen hands but is possible in other situations.

Don't forget about the car battery or the one in the ATV, snow machine, or all the other places they are found in modern times.

KY, every MRE that I have ever had, has had a book of matches in it. For reference, I got out in 2007. So, I don't know about after that.

Lighting a fire with steel wool still takes a little skill. I found this out this summer trying to teach my scouts how to do it. I had to learn myself in the process. The wool doesn't burst into flames. You have to blow on it, in a tinder bundle, to get it to go. But, it isn't too difficult, if you have a properly made tinder bundle.

For me, matches are the back-up of the back-up. Of course, maybe I should take hunter's advice and add a road flare as my back-up to matches. I use my firesteel first, then a lighter, then matches. It is a conservation of resources. I have limited matches, regardless of their price. The lighter only lasts so long. The firesteel is limited, but lasts a long time. I also have a back-up fire steel that I don't touch.

As a teacher of boys, I have found that today most kids have no idea about lighting fires. It is probably from over-protective parents. Of course, most of my boyscouts have parents that don't smoke. It is rare if I get a new scout who has lit a match or lighter before, in his life. One time I gave the troop a box of strike anywheres and told them to play with them. Of course they were in a safe environment, and next to a campfire, but like everything else, you need practice time to really see how they work, and what makes them not work.

Matches work in temperatures that lighters won't work. But, they break, and can get wet. You need to know how to mitigate against their weaknesses.

Here are some real strike anywhere matches. I've tried them on various hard surfaces and they'll strike everytime. No, they won't strike on plastic, glass, nor on aluminum... but they are good for about any other hard surfaces.

These do not require the "striker" on the side of the box.

I bought mine at Sportsman's Warehouse, in Meridian, Idaho. I imagine that any place that carries matches, will stock them ... or can order them.

Man, its a crying shame there not made anymore. I used to make "bombs" out of them, wrap a paper clip around the shaft just after the head for weight, then split the end of the shaft once and place some paper tails for stabilizers. Throw them in the air and they light when they hit the sidewalk! Never failed to work. Could even light them on your pant zipper.

Those are a really good deal! At my local Wally-World they're $1.00 each. The matches are okay, nothing spectacular but they work just fine. There's a really large rolled up square of striking paper, though- that's the gold mine! Every brand of S.O.B. match I've tried works on that stuff. As an added bonus there's a very small firesteel glued onto the bottom of the tube. It's small but it does work just fine. I've found that you get maybe three dozen good showers of sparks before it's pretty well used up but I've used it to light cotton balls before. Good stuff for a buck!

Dave, when Crash tugged on the steel wool he was pointing out and calling attention to the fine fibers of the wool. The second time he was showing the difference in fiber size between two sizes of steel wool. Tugging on the wool is not necessary to ignite it with a 9 volt battery. Crash was explaining that the thinner the steel wool is the easier it is to light. Heavier steel wool as you can see in the second wool ignition was a bit slower.

I havent tried it but I would guess that a weaker 9 volt may have difficulty igniting the heavier wool. Spreading the fibers a bit may help if the battery is weak.

Yep. What Karl said. I was just trying to show the different thickness of the "wool".

As to spreading the wool to ignite it with a weaker battery - I don't think it would be very effective. The reason being - when the wool shorts across the battery terminals and is thin (the 0000, 000, 00, etc) it will overload and burn. The burn time is very quick, but with the pads in tact the burning strands will in turn catch other strands. If the strand is a stand alone thread it will burn out very, very quickly.

I would thing a single strand might be able to catch some char cloth though.

Ohm's law, V/R=I

For this particular case, we want the amperage as high as possible. I'll hold the splainin' on that.

Reduce the resistance and you get more amperage, the voltage stays the same (I assume we all have the same battery). No matter the steel wool we each have, spreading the strands thinner reduces the resistance.

For bug out bags - Micro BIC White - thousands of lights - and you can see the fluid.
For back up Wind Matches - strike anywhere - REI - avoid campmor- the strikers wear out too fast.

So I took a peice of the dry wood I kept inside my tent and shaved off some fine splinters, and pulled the bullets out of 2 .22 shells and dumped the powder into the splinters. The fire steel lit the powder and I had a fire almost instantly.
It sure beat looking for tinder out in those wet woods!
