Lets leave the politics out of this, and just discuss getting to the point of doing more harm than good.



Hard to swallow: Bloomberg bans food donations to homeless shelters

In one of NYCs darkest hours, with resources stretched thin in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is showing his priorities with a ban on food donations to homeless shelters. No, not because of food contamination, but because the city cant properly assess salt, fat and fiber in donated food and thereby ensure starving people are getting the optimal levels of nutrition.

Having posted that,, What a moronic decision. It would seem to a simple brain like mine that any food is better than no food if you are responsible for possibly feeding a large group of people.

Having posted that,, What a moronic decision. It would seem to a simple brain like mine that any food is better than no food if you are responsible for possibly feeding a large group of people.

The thing that I saw, that got me thinking about this, was on tv. I can't remember where I saw it, so I just posted this article, because it popped up on google. What I saw, was someone asking him about this ban, in light of the present situation. They asked him if he still stood by this ban, and he answered yes. That's what got me looking to see what they were talking about.

I can not stand Bloomberg, but I believe in fairness. That decision was made back in March, not recently. As several of his
decisions are this one is stupid also.

It would seem that way if you chose to forget that we have imposed health code regulations which already make this regulation on what can be prepared and served to the public. Now, with nothing in my stomach, I've eaten from dumpsters, and I agree that any food of any nutritional value is better than none, but the implied premises here where:

1.) that this was relief from a storm still fresh in our emotional minds,
2.) that this was a decision by the mayor motivated by his own dietary preferences, rather than an enforcement of law by the department of homeless services and the health department and,
3.) that this is a general ban on donated food rather than on a specific denial of a specific donation accounting a fraction of the food donated.

when we examine these premises, it becomes clear that 1 was retracted, 2 is the result of a statement of opinion by one city employee and 3 was made clear in the first article, marginalized in the second and omitted from the third.

There's a fundamental failing in journalism these days when we get our news from sources, who's authors only sources are separate editorial articles from Fox Nation, who's only source in turn is yet another editorial article from the NY Post.

It's sad, but just as sad is the staggeringly unprofessional way in which it was covered. Anybody can be a journalist these days, but very few apparently can be a decent one.

My apologies to you. I'm so used to people judging a story on where it is printed/posted rather than on it's merits, that I go off a little too quick.

(I think you and I agree, that journalism was replaced with sensationalism a long time ago.)

Yep. I have a journalist friend, and the impression I get is that this is a very hard age for the good ones to get started in.

On the point you make in your initial post; I agree. There's a point where it's healthier to prepare and serve sub-optimal food than for those in need to get it from the trash two days later, and certainly (if I may add) to face potential trespassing charged in so doing. I doubt Ohab Zedek's food was the worst thing many of those in question have been eating. I'm sure the public could persuade the health dept. to take a more realistic view. Conversely, I don't think such things as reducing salt are beyond the capabilities of those who wish to feed the homeless. eventually the two could meet.

Now if we could routinely attack our elected officials with waterguns I bet we'd all feel better. Plus we wouldn't need questionable favorability polls, we could just weigh them before coming to work, and after they get into the office :D

Scratch the idea of distributing anything from the school lunch programs during emergencies. Don't dare give your temporarily homeless, cold and hungry neighbors a piece of salted bacon.

What is the surprise?

When people elect fools to make life or death decisions for them they should expect exactly what they get, foolish decisions.

Let them starve as the food rots. They are simply reaping the benefits of the administraton they voted into power.

I have no pity and no concern for them any longer.

When we elect politicians we can't predict every single thing they're gonna do down the road and none of y'all can tell me you haven't been disappointed by someone you voted for.

Bloomberg wasn't at Katrina when FEMA turned back the water tankers brought in by Walmart. He wasn't there when the FEMA stopped the coast guard from delivering 1000 gallons of fuel oil to local churches. It wasn't him that turned back the thousands of people who went to Katrina to help in anyway they could. I don't know Bloomburg from Adam and I don't know his political party. But, he has passed laws that have prevented those who can help and want to help from doing all they can. For this people should react and make it a political death sentence for him. I am curious how the next mayor will react to these laws implemented by Bloomberg or if they will ever be changed. Back in the good old days when a neighbors barn or house burned down the locals would step up and rebuild for them. I have an old friend who when he was hurt and hungry and poor...food would be put on his porch by people unknown. He was ashamed and grateful and he said he couldn't have made it without it. We are an amazing nation when it comes to volunteer help and assistance. You would almost have to beat people off with a stick to stop them from helping in a disaster. It almost looks like that's what's happening to me sometimes.

But I scratch my head at those who hardly register that (just for starters) a four star general and the head of CIA failed to hide (H E A D of C I A) an extra marital affair that would put him (and our country) at risk for blackmail and yet, they get all bent out of shape when a governor of a state not their own, messes around with food and guns.
First, let ME have the first dibs about being ticked off about what's going on in my state. It affects me more than you, and I'll deal with it better than you. (I can vote here, you can't) I don't like a lot of stuff going on in Y'ALL's states, either. And do you hear me kvetching about it? NO!
So...enough about Bloomberg. He'll be out of office soon and you'll have to start facing your own problems in your own back yard sooner or later.

Rest assured B that I am outraged over the Patraeus issue. I believe there is more politics at play there than we know (yet) so I have left it alone here.

I also believe that so many people pay attention to a mayor that is not their own because he goes out of his way to affect the lives of citizens that live outside his jurisdiction.

You are absolutely right, C, but instead of blaming Bloomberg, (didn't know he had such power) why not encourage your own mayor/governor to grow a pair? For Bloomberg to be successful outside our state, someone in your state has to drop the ball and cave. I think that's how it works.

Actually - he violated Federal law when he sent attorneys to Virginia to make straw purchases of firearms. No prosecutions were forthcoming since those that could do something about it agreed with him. Too bad you and I don't get to pick which laws we want to obey or follow and don't have to worry about the consequences.
