It's a good post and you raise a good question. It's a fine line between managing and censoring, isn't it? There is also a difference between something said in jest and something said in an effort to belittle another forum member. And it's the latter that concerns me.
I'll offer up my very rule of thumb guidelines so all of you have an understanding of how I operate. This is just me. I'm not speaking for Sarge or Chris. They may even disagree with me.
I'm pretty affable about posts on any subject. You can argue all day long over the best knife of gun or wad of chewing gum and as long as you do it without getting personal I could care less. Spirited conversation is often good stuff. Sometimes a great learning opportunity. People have the right to agree or disagree. The only subjects I try to limit are religion and politics. The conversation just denigrates into verbal sparring. People are just too passionate about those subjects.
Beyond that, I'm only concerned with does it violate the rules?
1. No hate speech. No derogatory comments about someone or a group of people based on sex, race, age, religion, whatever.
We've been very fortunate in this arena. Folks have kept their head on straight and not gone there with the intention of bashing someone.
2. No personal attacks. If you disagree with someone, refute their statement. Don't call them a village idiot.
This is one that does happen. It's unfortunate and should never happen. I've PM'd individuals and asked them for some cooperation in this arena. I have yet to sanction anyone by either giving them an infraction or banning a member. So far, folks have been reasonable about it even though a couple have pushed the envelope. I have issued a few verbal warnings and I don't have any problem in sactioning if it is required. I just haven't seen anything I felt was that serious yet.
3. Private messages are private. Posting them publicly is just being antagonistic.
I've not seen any issues with this.
4. Keep discussion PG-13. If it goes to R rated this website might not be accessible from work places, schools, libraries, and the like.
Again, this is an area that has occurred on occasion. Here, too, I generally PM folks and ask them to be a bit more sensitive. It's easy enough to post what you mean without coming out and saying it. I've received complaints about posts because the wrong words were used and I do try to deal with those situations if someone is offended by off color language. With younger viewers signed on and younger viewers able to visit the site it just makes sense to watch what we say. Every post is on the net for all to see and kids are subjected to enough stuff as it is. I've sometimes edited a post and placed asterisks where the word was spelled out. I also add a comment to that affect so you know I've done it. I don't try to change anything without your knowledge.
5. No posting commercial advertisements (aka spamming).
I have banned several for this infraction and I do go after them aggressively. If possible, I report them to their ISP for appropriate action. This is the only reason I've ever sanctioned someone.
That's it. I try to keep peace in the valley and make certain no bar brawls break out or someone's horse gets stolen. The rest is up to you folks.

The form members are well meaning and want to help, and they hope the regurgitated information is valid, but they don't know. How many people have had thousands of bear encounters, and had hundreds of bears in camp? Very few. And yet when someone asks about camping and cooking in bear country and really wants valid information, what they get is regurgitated information and the people with real field experience just shake their head, and do not post.
Everyones Bio is empty, you can not tell the 13 year old, still in junior high school "well meaning" regurgitation from the person who has been there and done that.
If I want info about canning food, or reloading ammo, I don't want "well meaning" regurgitated information.
When I was at RIT studying computer programing in the 60's the first thing taught was "Garbage In, Garbage Out".
I want to be CLEAR, I really think members care and want to help other members, but............It is mostly regurgitation.
I like the community, I just don't like the result.

I more or less agree with you, hopeak, but I suppose that's the nature of the beast. The people putting practice to work, shooing bears out of camp away from their dinner of inner bark and toasted bugs while wearing an oiled loincloth, are out there doing it, not hunched in front of their computers debating it like the rest of us. The hardcore survival or bush people presumably don't spend much time online. That leaves the rest of us who enjoy the topics, have some or even lots of experience in some stuff, and apparently too much time on our hands, are lonely, or don't find live people with a sincere interest in folding saws and eating bugs.
Sure the tendency is to debate the same topics over and over again; the forum is after all geared at wilderness survival, so info on applying for jobs, wallpapering or finding a good dentist tend not to find their way in here, although they would be new things to debate. Guess it's like hanging out with your camping buddies, inevitably rehashing old stories.

All topics are debatable as there is always someone with another opinion and that's what I like about it here. But if the pressure of being on here and getting ragged on with a few names in fun (and only in fun as personal insults are just ridiculous) break you down then what will happen to you in real situation?
Yes but the same thing that to one person is just a bit of rough humor is might be hurtful to the person it's directed at. I'm a very opinionated and outspoken person and am often offending people without meaning to because diplomacy is not my strong suit - but that's in face to face encounters. On the net, there's time to think over how to phrase things and re-read it before posting it. For myself, I find that more of a benefit because it's working on a skill I don't have in real life.
Personally, I can rag at people and take name-calling and actually agree with you that it's helpful in real life to not take it all to heart. I'm a tree-hugging animal-loving greenie activist and it is to my immense benefit to be able to take what's being dished out.
I just fail to see any advantage of name-calling in cyberspace. you don't have that personal dimension where you can look at a person and judge from their face and gestures if they're kidding. Sure there's the icons but it's still a far cry from real interaction.

I think there are a lot of wilderness skills we either haven't talked about or have only skimmed over. Foretelling weather for one, Wilderness medicine, Tracking, Regional challenges, Cooking and Dealing with predators are all things we've had posts on but, as Hopiak said, a lot of it is repeated information or someone suggests a web site or book or recipe. All very helpful but not much on real life experiences. For example, I don't recall anyone every posting a real life Wilderness Medicine experience other than WE (I think) spraining his back. Has anyone talked about coming face to face with a mountain lion or wolverine and what they did to protect themselves? Who on here has built an oven and uses it? I think there is a lot of territory yet uncovered.

well now, i agree with the joking as long as it does not get personal but how does one differentiate that when they are new. pale rider and i go waaaaaay back. palerider was defending someone that appeared to be being attacked(whether true or not) you will find palerider very knowledgeable about certain aspects of survival and i for one support palerider froma 1000 yards away

Beo, What I mean by "Regurgitated Information" is information learned from a book, or anywhere on the INTERNET, or by word of mouth. This information could be valid or bogus.
What is "NOT" "Regurgitated information" is what you know totally to be true because you have lived it. If you learn how to build a shelter form a book, and you "REALLY" build it then it is real.

I don't give advise about canning food, I don't know squat about canning food. I use white gas and matches to start a fire, I have never done the Primitive fire starting, or primitive shelter stuff that some here do. How are people who come here to learn supposed to discern what is valid and what is, unsubstantiated untested hearsay data.

Ya know, I've been here for almost a year. When I read posts, I can pretty much tell if ya gone and done it, or if you're reading from a book. We had in the past a couple threads of field exp. that did not go the way they should have. It was a pretty informative thread.
The site brings alot of diff. pers. and areas of knowledge. Book knowledge is not something to poo poo, but, if I was going to go trekking in the Rockies, ya damn right I'd be asking questions from those that spend their time there. Just common sense, yeh, I can read it in a book, but from what I've read, there are a few woman here who know more about bears than I ever want to. Right now. When I go into grizz country, gonna pay them alot of attention.
I do know the basics, being in Georgia, yes we have bears, and they can be a problem, but where I venture they are far and few. That still does not mean I'm going to put my steak wrapped up under my pillow, food is going to get hung.
There are a few here that I know that I would not think twice about trekking with. Now others, may think twice. That's not saying I would not go with ya or take ya, let's just say that I'm particular to who accompanies me in the woods.
Ah.........I could ramble all night. Must be something in the water, or the push ups.

This is an interesting thread; NOTE: do not call anyone "the village idiot"; please substitute "The Village Numpty!" Now here's the thing, Some of us here play rough, and some do not! Myself, I find the humor refreshing and helps build the comeraderie we all enjoy here. All, that is except for FVR, 'cause he's a loner! :rolleyes: Let's agree that if anyone gets offended by a comment that the party giving offense apologize and not tease that person anymore, after all, they may not be an adult, even though they said they were. Some kids like pulling the legs of adults and some are just plain cautious about giving their true age over the internet; can you blame them? Or they might be really sensitive to the point of having their feelings hurt very easy. That being said I still won't apologize to Brad & Adrian for calling them The Bare Wilderness Numpty's as that's exactly the way they came across. However, people like that are in the minority. Here's a point about group survival that I'd like to make. It is possible that some day one of us might find themselves in a group survival situation, and if we have what it takes to get the group through it means we get the whole group through, weak sisters and all. Is it any different here? We have members who have been up-front about there ignorance of Survival knowledge. I also agree with Hopeak about the "regurgitation" of info. This is why I created the "Sticky-files" I hope you all will notice that I don't say much about being in Bear country. The only animals that raid my garbage can are raccoons; stray, feral kitty cats, and the occaisonal drunk college student who thinks it's cool to use my garbage can to help ditch his over-abundance of "party-garbage! So clean the sand out of your panties and lets get on with buisness; either that or you can drop and give me 20!:rolleyes:

I think the check and balance are those folks who have done it. I've seen any number of threads (mine included) where someone challenges the advice. When something is written that is not on the mark others chime in to point that out. It may be a "numpty" that wrote it or someone that truly thought it was correct or even someone that does it that way in the field. Yet others either point out it is incorrect or a better way to do it.
Frank is correct. The real shams are pretty easy to spot. Sometimes right away. Sometimes after a few posts but they general give themselves up.
I sometimes offer up a "thimble full of knowledge" on a subject because that's all I have. Sometimes it's something I know quite a bit about. If any of it is helpful or useful then I figure it's all good. If not, then you get to ignore it.
Outside of a survival situation, I think the key to knowledge is not always what you know but knowing where to acquire the information. I think this forum is a great place to acquire a lot of information from some truly gifted folks. And we can do it without getting personal.
No one wears a bullseye when they log on. If someone says something you don't like, why get mad? Is it really so important for you to have such passion on the subject? Just move to another thread or ignore the post all together.

Well put, Super-Duper Twinkie man!:D On the serious side look at this site compared to others. It's the personalities here that make it unique. Most of the similar sites I've seen are dull, droll, and monotonous; that's why I don't stay with them very long. But on the flip side look at members like Otay and Bat-Cat. Both situations started out as joking around then got out of hand. I think some members got offended when Bat-Cat picked on them for mis-spelling and every thing went South from there. Some of the people we have on this site are independent types and are very hardy out-doors folks. they don't back down from anyone and when they post something that hurts someone else who bites back, then there's a battle going on. My thoughts are that if someone doesn't like what you say either apologize and move on or put them on your ignore list then you don't have to look at them anymore. However, if this site ever loses it's personality, the Wolf-Pack, then I'm gone.:cool:

There have been complaints I get via email from new members who complaint about existing members being rude, insulting, elitist, or exclusionary, and they leave and they don't come back. That is a loss.
Additionally, the last thing we want is for someone to get fired because they were on this site at work and a boss looked over their shoulder and saw something unprofessional. Or to get this site blocked by search engines, filter software, schools, colleges, libraries, etc.
You may tease and rib on your friends in person, but in person there are things such as body language, tone of voice, etc, that indicate if you're being malicious or not. On the Internet, you have no such luxury. So you have to be more careful with your words.
In anycase, the rules will not be changing. There will always be censorship of questionable comments.

Here is a way that might work. You invite Two knowledgeable members to rate the three best, most on target, valid, informative posts, on each thread.
For example: Marcraft just started a thread, Caliber?
When the thread slows down say 7 days, or pick any point where the thoughts have been fleshed out.
Rick and/or Sarge would ask two or three members who know that area of expertise to pick the two or three most relevant posts to that subject. These might get moved to the top of the thread.
This way if I go looking for Information on say,canning food, a subject I know nothing about. I do not have to guess which posts are most right-on.
If the moderators asked me to rate a thread and I did not feel I was qualified to do the rating, I would decline.
I don't have the ability to move posts within a thread. So I couldn't take post 46 for example and move it to post 1 (or 2 or 3). You can subscribe to a thread. That way if there is something in it you like you can always go back to it without searching. But I don't know that doing that would answer your question. It wouldn't help if you are searching for something you hadn't subscribed to.

I'm thunkin' on it. I'm trying to figure out what options we have to do that. You have to work within the software and you can't highlight or star the posts. Let me see what I can come up with.

Name calling can be childish, cruel and unnecessary. I've been guilty. I'm sorry for my offenses! If you were in the military, do you remember the DI's name calling? He was equally offensive to all. Later, in your platoon if you screwed something up or not you would get a nickname. I've had several and they still make me laugh. One was shadow.
One night the guy behind me accidentally hit his light. I jumped when I saw my silhouette and thought it was someone. Other than watch our actions and understand we can't read body language I have no answers.

Hopeak and Rick: On Hopeak's point to gather pertinent info on a topic so somebdoy new could find the info easily, would the blog section or copying pertinent posts and placing them in a sticky work?
The problem with copying the posts is you'd have to actually start a new thread. That's doable but labor intensive. That would wind up being a full time job. You can sticky a thread but not an individual or group of posts.
I don't think the blog section would work either.
I get what Hopeak wants to do and I think it's a good idea. I'm looking for some way, rather quickly, to just identify 1. those posts on subject that have merit or 2. the top few posts in the thread that sum up the whole thread or offer the best solution, etc.
It might be possible to highlight the text. Give me some of your thoughts on the color. Does that make the posts stand out for you? Scan back up and you'll see a couple of more I did.

Yes it does. At first I thought "what's Twinkie Boy up to now?" But it does make it stand out more. Seems like going through threads and highlighting could turn into a full time job as well. It's not going to help with the searching either. Part of the fun for me at least is reading all of the posts in a thread (I have a weird sense of humor), but I can see where if somebody came here just to look for something quickly they may not want to sift through the witisissms and charm of some of us. *can't figure out why not*

I agree with the concept, but moving posts out of a thread will leave a lot of questions, and you'll still need to read the thread to get the previous posts in the conversation so the whole thing will make sense.
Can you lock the ability to change the font color?
No. And that is a downside I had considered. I really don't know of a good way to accomplish it. The text thing was just a thought. I suppose if we set it as a standard and everyone agreed then it would work. Any way we do it your in the situation that the quality of the post is subjective to the moderator's opinion. If Sarge or I think it's a good post then someone might take offense that theirs wasn't picked. Just some things I've tried to think through.

I agree. One thread comes to mind is the one about the amount of time to boil water. I did some research on this and it just "boils " down to what you feel comfortable with.... one minute to twenty minutes.

A forum isn't always the best way to present information of all types, and there is no changing that.
Authoritative concise how-to articles... not really forum material.
Forums are, by nature, casual discussions.
So rather than trying to force a square peg into a round hole, I advise just being patient until I can find some good wiki software to install that will allow people to write authoritative explanations on various topics.

So rather than trying to force a square peg into a round hole, I advise just being patient until I can find some good wiki software to install that will allow people to write authoritative explanations on various topics.
I have wikimedia running on my server. It's .htaccess protected, but if you'd like temporary free reign to poke around I can provide it to you via PM. It's easy to install and the requirements aren't much, just mysql and php. Incidentally wikimedia is what wikipedia runs on, and can be locked down to logged in users with all kinds of ACL's.

No need to appoint on line "experts", or make the posts we like best blue. Most of it is so subjective anyway...
Opinions or blue opinions...it's getting silly, for the simple fact that without "regular opinions", the "expert" opinions would all look the same...and then we would have to come up with a new system to decipher which "expert" opinion is more valuable to us...it's endless...
The plasticity of our minds actually require us to encounter a wide array of information in order for us to decide what works best for us...and this "best", is by definition subjective.
Not every soldier gears up the same way.
Not every grand mother cooks the same way.
Not every shooter shoots the same way.
And so on...so "expertise" is great as a starting point into the discovery of our own nature, but should not in any form trump, suffocate, eliminate, bump or out-color...the whole of information presented.
