View Full Version : Another set of skills for being prepared

You know everybody is always talking about having guns, ammo, food preps, BOBs and knives, and associate all of that with being prepared. But there are other things that would be almost as important if the SHTF, or a natural disaster occured.
I think tools, hardware, and at least some fabrication equipment, and the skill to use them is just about about as important as wilderness skills. If you can't repair a generator, tiller, lawn mower, charge a battery, or fix a chain saw or your truck, you are at a deficit in my opinion.
Plus being able to fabricate and repair things give you an advantage to earn in a crisis. The people that have no tools or mechanical skills will have to depend on the craftsmen to repair their broken items and that is worth a lot of bartering power.
I keep enough spare materials and tools in my shop to repair darn near anything and it gives me a definate feeling of security. I have copper pipe, pvc pipe, all kinds of electrical wire, kerosene lanterns, extra wick, 2 generators, lubricants, plumbing fittings, almost any size nut and bolt, and so many parts they are too numerous to mention. I probably have more tools than the law allows but without tools all of the parts and hardware is useless.
So when you are thinking ahhhhh, I'm prepared for anything, are you really? When the power goes off, and all of the stores and mechanic shops are closed, will you be able to keep things running?

In trying to keep two "places" up and running, I measure my repair/project success by the lack of 'trips to the hardware store.
If I need one, I buy two, as if it broke once, it will break again.....and of course planning is a biggie.
Tough deal if you are not handy....but a very good point.

The only thing I have a hard time keeping enough stuff for is plumbing. If I had an 18 wheeler full of fittings, I would still be short at least 2 of them!

I do have my collection of coffee cans w/ mix of nuts/bolts/ washers.....and can generally find what I need....but yeah you can have a whole hardware store in front of you and it;s "well that you have to order"......LOL

Certainly important, but in my opinion, something even more important that is either neglected by the "I got lots of guns, ammo, and knives," set, or barely touched upon, is sanitation!!
Throughout the history of mankind, I'd bet a whole lot of money that millions upon millions more people have died from filth, or lack of sanitation, than were ever killed in wars.
Anyone who is "preparing" for "SHTF/Teotwawki" but doesn't have lots of sanitation supplies and the logical plans to combat filth, is just urinating in the wind, so to speak.
Of course, having several EBRs and ten cases of ammo, is a lot more romantic than having ten cases of toilet paper, jugs of Clorox, a case or two of disenfectant, and a case of soap.

More important than having cases of soap might be knowing how to turn a hog on the hoof into soap!
How to make lye for cleaning, soap for washing, and how to maintain sanitation without the frills and fancies we have available today. Most of those things are luxuries and not necessities. (let the screaming begin!)
Most people are limited to some degree by the room they have for preps and cases of TP take up a lot of room! Not to mention the amount some people feel is necessary for a proper job. You start dealing with a family that thinks they should have a roll or more per day and you will have no room for any other prep if you are trying to maintain a year supply.

TP....two sheet limit.

There is so much stuff one needs to be "prepped" that I find myself breaking it down into categories. One category for me is "Tools and Materials". I am always considering what I need in each category so that as the funds are available I can just move on to the next item. The skills required are daunting, so while there are plenty of things I don't know how to do, I also have a list of books I need as part of the preps so I can at least figure it out later.

Mechanical and electrical repair skills can normally be learned just as survival skills can be learned. It is amazing how many people are afraid to try and fix something in their house that is broken or needs repair, but they will try to learn wilderness skills and taks off out to the wilderness half prepared.
If and when the SHTF, most people are going to stay at home as long as possible, so why not know how to maintain the infrastructure that supports their home! So that is why I say that craftsmanship is just as important as woodsmanship!

I guess it's a mind set........
After years of factory work, form entry level to production and inventory control manager...Plant closed down.
Went back to school, started as a HVAC service guy, got my journeyman's card and retired as a Service tech.
Did that ever surprise a lot of people......LOL....I guess they see a boss and assume you are stupid......
I agree...... learn what ever you need to get by....if you can....It's all learned skills....and no one ever said you have to be an expert, just enough to get the job done

Yep, but first you've gotta start with a hog or two, know how to butcher it, a bunch of hardwood, and then a fireplace to burn the wood to create the necessary ashes to put into the rendered fat, and then a big black cast iron pot, etc.
I grew up in a tiny rural town in north central Arkansas. I and my brother helped my mother many, many times to make lye soap. We had the hogs, we had the large fireplace and lots of oak firewood, and the huge black cast iron pot plus the wooden soap stirring paddle, etc. I can not even count how many blocks of dark yellow lye soap we cut from from the flat containers my mother poured that liquid lye soap into.
(Have you ever had a glob of boiling lye soap pop a bubble and land on your arm? :cursing: Makes you a lover of Proctor and Gamble, Inc. for the rest of your life, I guarantee you! )
Never hurts to have certain sustainability skills ... but I'll just lay in a case of soap and leave the chore of making lye soap to the more industrious here.

The thing is, a lot of people wont even try due to lack of confidence. I have freinds that are smart people but sill not even attempt to change oil in their car, and I have even offered to show them how! And I know they are smart enough to do it, but they are very afraid of it like they will blow their car up if they change the oil.
This has always just amazed me!

Skill is definately one of those things that you cannot lose, and will prove invaluable. All the tools, and gadgets you could accumulate in a lifetime won't do you any good if you lack the skill to use them.

I'll confess that I used to be that way and still am when it comes to some plumbing and electricity. My thinking at the time was that A) it'll take more time and money if I screw up and have to have it fixed later, than if it's done right the first time and B) my time was more valuable than spending it on stuff I don't know anything about. My job was so all consuming, that thinking about learning some new skill didn't even enter my mind.
That was 10 yrs ago and I evolved. I still don't tinker with electricity but probably could rewire something or install a toilet because I watched the professionals do it a thousand times and picked up a few tricks along the way. But I can probably regrout/recaulk a bathroom better than the best of them. Through the years I've been so disappointed with expensive "professional" work and though that I couldn't do much worse. And didn't. Each time by actually getting my hands dirty I learn a new little thing to make the job better and it gives me a great satisfaction not to be dependent on someone else.
I often fantasize about quitting my job and going to a vocational school for car mechanics, electricians or building contractors just because at this point I value that much more than what I do. But if someone is crazy enough to pay me what they pay me for my "skills", who am I to argue?

How about labeling and filing so you can find what you need? These are the things that bug me.

The difference between a journeyman and a home owner is that a journeyman can do a job, faster, has the tools, knowledge.....enough so that he can make good money for him and his boss/company.
A home owner/regular guy/gal can do the job....but maybe takes longer, doesn't have the special tools, and it might not work out as well, the first time.....requiring "do overs"....a do over in the service world can get you fired.
So it depends on how much time you what to spend, ......or money for someone to do it for you.
Case in point.....Did all the plumbing and electrical at "The Place" (our cabin).........Was a service guy at the time, with different journeyman co-workers available to look over my design, borrow tools etc.
Took me all summer, but when I was done...had to have it all inspected for code, (passed)....had to redo a couple of things....plus run back and forth to do the work on week ends, (gas) buy/rent special tools, can't get discounts on materials as I wasn't buying in bulk or wholesale.
Would it have been more expensive to hire it out?...... maybe, but the cost might have been closer that you would think......I could have sat on the pourch and watched.........BUT I wouldn't have a first hand knowlage on every fitting, pipe, wire, fixture/appliance.... in this place....and the skill to repair all of it........priceless.
Most all skills are 'learned skills'.....but I will say that there are people in the world that have no business fooling with electrical/plumbing....power tools, sharp pointy things, or firearms.......Just the way it is.
Oh yeah...and one can never have too many tools.....just don't keep them all in one place...so no one know how many you really have.
And 'B"....who would have thought that the guy in the office on Friday would be installing your boiler on Monday....Yes, there is a big market for skilles trades...and yes, it is a learned skill

Well with things like generators, I go by the philosophy of one is none, and 2 is one! And I keep at least 100 gallons of gas on hand at all times. And yes, I have a lot of manual tools in case I need them. I have found that it is easier to use a hand saw if you just need to cut one board at the back of the property, as opposed to going back to the shop, and getting extension cords etc for using a Skillsaw.
I even have an old brace and bit drill, as well as hand planers and draw knives. I love all of my old tools and still use them when it saves time to do so.
I remember helping my dad and uncle build a room onto our house, and they used nothing but hand saws, claw hammers, and a brace and bit to build it. There were modern tools then, but that was what they were use to using. And when they cut wood, they used a cross cut saw instead of a chain saw. They were not used to modern tools and weren't even interested in trying them.
I personally like all the modern tools, but when teh gasoline runs out, and the grid is down, the old tools will still gitter done!

The mentality and courage to TRY is what I am trying to teach my children. I don't have to know how to do everything, they don't have to know how to do everything. But it doesn't hurt to try. With all the resources we have available, heck you can look on youtube to see how to change a break switch on a 1990 Toyota 4 Runner, it's crazy how many people would not even think of trying to do it themselves first. Sure I could just take it to the shop and have it repaired. And I actually finally did have to do that. But not after going through the steps, with my kids, first. Check the bulbs, check the fuse, see if any power is getting to the switch, going to the parts store to get that tool and then back to get the switch, etc. are all very miner skills, but if you don't have the thought to even try to do it yourself first, what kind of person will you be?

Good for you girl! The most important thing to know about fixing things is when your in over your head, or do not have the proper tools. As long as you know where to draw that line, you will never mess things up any worse, and you always learn from the experience!
It strikes me that what most are saying and I believe to be true is that the skills listed are actually everyday skills that will translate or carry over should something bad happen. Self reliance is a good thing. When my kids started high school I made my daughter take shop class and auto repair and the boys had to take home economics. Granted, I was not a popular father at the time but today my daughter can change a flat or an electrical switch (has done both) and has no hesitation at tackling repair jobs around the house. It's kinda funny to see the look on her husband's face when she says, "try a 9/16" or something similar. The boys, on the other hand, both learned to cook and do so regularly.
If you will allow, WT, I think this thread is more about everyday skills and how they can be used in a bad situation. You might very well find your skills to be in demand should something occur. That could translate to barter or cash deals.

I gave up caulking with tools years ago. Noticing that my fingers were of
different lengths and widths, I set off on a great experiment.
I have no idea what happened to all that caulking paraphenalia.

Well Rick everyday skills are different to everybody, but yeah, they are pretty much everyday to most of us on here. But sometimes being the kind of self reliant people we are, I think we forget that there are many many people out there that honestly have trouble changing a light bulb.
So people like us will definately have a huge advantage if times bad, and all of the repair shops shut down, and skilled labor cannot be afforded by most folks.
That is when all of our repair skills will pretty much get us almost anything we want or need. With all the tools and supply's I have, I could simply hang a sign out by the road and get a lot of business simply repairing lawn mowers, appliances, ATV's, etc. I do not have 1 single peice of equipment, ATV, motorcycle or appliance that has ever been in the shop, it all get s fixed right there on the farm!
I can only imagine the amount of bartering I could do if times get bad!

Another trick I use on super fine caulk beads that are on porous wood where smearing would be a disaster is to mask the edges of where you want the bead, then after the caulking is applied and looks the way you want it, you remove the tape. You end up with a perfect edge.

To put a finer point on it...
I've done that once where the the tub meets the tiles. Turns out you get a straight edge which catches water and will show mildew much quicker than if you "feathered" it out. The challenge is to feather it out as neatly and narrowly as possible.

I do it because I can't find anyone else to do it to my satisfaction. It takes me a long time because I believe in prep above all things, redoing it right away if it's not perfect, thorough clean up before it sets and finally, letting it "cure" longer than usual. When I first started, I didn't do all this and I paid the price later. Because it's such a production, we now squigee and wipe the tiles after every shower and the grout and caulk look brand new 3 years after I've redone them.
Don't get me started on "professionals"...at least those I dealt with.
