Last year we lost power for almost 4 days from the Halloween snow storm.
And almost 4 days without power from tropical storm Irene.
I plan to have plenty of gas for the gennies.And get everything put away and tied down ahead of time.

Also a good idea to keep your auto's fuel tank(s) topped off and have your important papers and meds gathered/packed and ready to grab and go if needed. Hopefully this storm tracks further to your east and the nasty stuff misses you entirely. Good luck!

The news here is talking about 20-25 foot waves coming your way as well.
We had a good, strong hurricane here in 2004. Hurricane Charley. It came directly over my neighborhood at 120 sustained winds. That was a rough 20 minutes.
It went over real quick at almost 30 mph.
That wasn't the bad part. The bad part was no power for 2 weeks and almost all my perishable food going bad. That was before we got a generator.

I know someone whose cash-stash is $500 in 1-dollar bills. Rather bulky, but quite effective.

Speaking only for me, if there IS one it had danged well be at a location at LEAST 50 feet above mean sea level. Other hurricane parties, held at locations lower than this, have almost universally met with less-than-satisfactory outcomes (read as "90+ percent fatalities").

I grew up along the central Gulf Coast, and have first-hand experience with several major hurricanes (Betsy, Camille, Frederic, et al). As such I do not find this topic to be even the least bit humorous.

That's what happened during Irene last year in this neck of the woods.
The ground got really saturated from all the rain and the wind just toppled them.
I'm not in the cross hairs of Sandy but everything depends on the shift to the west.
But as you said 2D2Q,it's so big everybody near the path is going to be effected.

Food spoiling during winter storms is a nonissue except for the goofballs that forget they can sit a cooler on the porch. My good ice chest will keep food for a week if I place a couple of 2L frozen bottles in the bottom of the cooler. I keep the frozen packs or a 2L in the freezer all the time. The one used at the jambore lasted from Friday morning till Sunday afternoon and was still wll frozen.

Eggs will keep for several days without refregeration. They will last for weeks in the fridge.

Since I got the chickens eggs are not a concern any longer. I have eggs whether I need them or not!

My own choice of items to grab in that situation would be

1. Crash's bacon jerky he brought to the meet.
2. Spam
3. propane

Got to have something to eat with the eggs and fuel for cooking them.

I've been watching this thing too, at one point, and still possible is that it will make landfall over long island. Most of the forecasts have it hitting jersey though. The worst is supposed to hit monday afternoon, so hopefully its not too bad this time around.

What sucks is playoffs starts this week for long island hs soccer, so we're kind of up in the air with our teams right now.

Yup, at least as of now, it seems so. Interestingly enough, we seem prepared for the 10 days they are now calling for without power (their maximum estimate). Neighborhood has banded together rather well. Generators and fuel stored in two seperate concrete structures. Plenty of fuel. One fellow has converted a chest freezer to refrig unit, and several chest freezers ready , currently making blocks of ice. Neighborhood will share for food storage space if needed. Got most of the dead tree limbs pruned off in the neighborhood today and two "iffy" trees taken down. Neighborhood "watch" schedule will start Monday afternoon.Seems our advantage is a mostly retired military street. Maybe old, but still can band together:) Tomorrow, last minute details, boarding up a couple of windows and ready for it.

I just lost power for about an hour. It was just a small limb that fell on the lines and popped a fuse or a transformer. They were quick to get us back on line.

Having been through two events locally last year, it is interesting to note the reaction of people this time. There has been a lot more preparation and those who haven't prepped are making an effort now. My daughter in law laughed last year at some of my son's prepping efforts. When the storms hit she changed her tune. This year she is hitting him with a stream of "Have you done X?"

In my own household, we had a conversation about what we should do. A year ago holding the attention of everyone was a challenge. This year was quite productive.

CNN also reports an expectation of power outages all along the track.

Back in for lunch, want to share a lessons learned, so far......I personally had 1,500 ft of 3/8 nylon rope, on 100ft coils and sundry other lengths of rope. Neighbors had at least that much between them. We just ran out of rope!!!! The 100ft coils were on sale for about
$3.oo, suggest increasing the stores, I am going to triple my personal stock in the near future. Also those relatively cheap ratchet straps, very handy, used all 10 sets of mine and what the neighbors had. And pre postioning tarps, more rope and cement blocks in case of wind damage. Thinking I could use more tarps, don't take up much space. Back at it, see ya later

Our govenor declared a state of emergency late yesterday.
We lready have a high wind alert in place.
It's strange,the storm is hundreds of miles away still.And the sky is gray and already having gust of wind and some rain.
I just cleaned the gutters and down spouts.Not sure how long they'll stay cleared as leaves are blowing around everywhere.
I plan to bring in some wood,test the generators and make a run for some more gas.

Yeah, I don't think LI has issued a state of emergency yet since not all local schools have issued closings for tomorrow. If it were a state of emergency, they'd be closed by state mandate. I'm just hoping that between Irene last summer and a couple of severe wind storms we had this summer, that as much of the loose branches and weak trees are already down, which would be an immense help.

Gonna fill some water bottles and the family is out grabbing a couple of things. I gotta go get gas as well, my car is on 'E', which is my fault, I just didn't feel like getting gas yesterday.

If we were to take that advice down here we would all be sitting on top of mount trashmore with the buzzards. I am a veteran of hurricanes with 45 years experience and almost that in hurricane parties.

My advice for anyone in South Florida is heed the mandatory evacuation zones. They are calculated on expected maximum storm surge. When my home was in an evacuation zone I went to my parents house 7 miles further inland.

As long as the gutters stay clear I should flood. Not much you can do to avoid water that piles up next to your house if the gutters clog though, except go out in the storm and try to fix it.

I had surgery 2 weeks ago. Up until Friday night I had not been out of bed at all. My mom called me to see if I wanted her to go shopping for me to "stock up for the coming storm" ... I thanked her and assured her I am stocked up well enough to last through much more than this storm without having to head to the store. She just chuckled and said, "yeah , what was I thinking?"

Tried to get the generator tested and discovered it has some major problems since last year - solution - large blocks of ice in gallon jugs in all the freezers and filled the bathtub with water.... we have enough food and heat for months so I am not going to worry about it... I am 1,000 miles inland in north KY, under low cloud cover with prediction of winds over 50mph for the next two days spinning this way off Sandy.

I do not think the maps and TV graphics are showing the true extent of this storm.

I'm in lower Delaware and it looks like we'll get a big chunk of this storm. Tropical storm conditions till late Tuesday.
I spent the last couple of days making sure all my sibs and elderly relatives were prepared. I was already in good shape, no little thanks to this site.
I cooked breakfast right away this morning as I have an electric range and I never know when the power will go out around here. Only lost power for a 1/2 hour during Irene last year( IIRC) but this is much more than Irene was. I'm moving the truck up the hill in a little while and then back to the house where I will wait it out.

Now, to be perfectly straight and serious, I will admit to -- MAYBE - kinda - sorta -- getting a little worked up over the idea of hurricane parties. Been there -- Done that -- Seen the tragedy that so often follows, and had to comfort the relatives of the so-recently-deceased. This does not in any way detract from my central point.

To illustrate, here are some Hurricane Katrina pics from my home town of Mobile Alabama, a bit more than 100 miles east (as the crow flies) of downtown New Orleans. They were taken some time after the peak storm surge that put 15 feet of water into these very streets.

First, the old GM&O Terminal, north of downtown Mobile. What you cannot see is a road network, a couple of bridges, and a massive parking lot. Why? They're all under 5 to 6 feet of water.

Second, a series of pictures from downtown Mobile. They include the Riverview Plaza Hotel, the L&N Railroad Terminal, and the old Mobile Police Department/Mobile City Hall. Remember, folks. These pics were taken 100 miles east of Katrina's landfall. You never heard one thing about this flooding in the national media, yet here it is.

Now, to reiterate and further clarify my original point -- anyone who even considers remaining in an area that is less than about 30 feet above mean seal level (I said 50 to be on the safe side), whether or not a "hurricane party" is involved, should recall that the vast majority of hurricane deaths are from DROWNING...

Well,that was fun.
Living on the East side of a hill I was getting some serious wind by 3 pm.
Lasted clear up till 8 pm. with gust to 60+mph.Sometimes it sounded like a freight train coming.
There's about 300K or better still without power.I was lucky this time,only had a few quick outages.
I didn't realize how much damage there was till I went to work this morning.Lots of trees down.
I think a lot of the lose trees and branches came down last year during Irene and he Halloween snow storm.
That could have saved us from losing power.
Hope everyone stays safe.New York and New jersey looks pretty bad.And all that snow in W. Virginia is crazy.

Where I live:
5" of rain
25 mph winds with 50-60 mph gusts
no fallen trees
minor flooding of nearby creek
never lost power or other services
I'd say we here got lucky again.
The coastal highway is closed while crews move the dunes back from where they covered the road but that will open back up in a day or 2.
Hope those who got the real brunt of this storm get back to their normal lives as soon as they are able.

Just some observations and lessons learned from our adventure;

If you are staying in place.
Get the neighborhood together BEFORE HAND. We did , informally and it made a world of difference.

Centralized some stuff in two Concrete garages for the neighborhood, to include freezers and refrigs and a couple generators.

One of the guys converted a chest freezer to a refrigerator (fiddling with thermostat) helped tremendously in reducing food spoilage for the community.

Using other chest freezers as freezers for community use also reduced waste and helped with community cooking.

Community cooking. Worked great. The ladies kept busy, and conserved resources and bonded all even more.

WATCH THE NEWS!!!!! We “caught on” to the impending hurricane a couple days early and did our “top off” shopping before the rush.

I am going to lean a bit towards air operated tools in the future where possible. With kids around is a bit less “jarring” on them. And reduces their anxieties. I know is not possible to completely convert, but will add another dimension.

Have spare hand tools. “Loaners” for other folks, and mark them with paint for retrieval. We did have a lot of strong bodies from outside of the neighborhood (mostly off duty active duty military) available, so needed tools for them to work with around their homes and the area.

We were a bit light on barbeque type gas cylinders, we made it through fine, but saw that we were getting close. So each family will now get an extra container or two. Did have plenty of charcoal and wood backup though.

Plenty of spare , sturdy leather gloves. Had ours, but they did get wet, so spare would have been good. And few to hand out would not hurt.

Ponchos, ponchos, ponchos. Normal rain gear was virtually useless over the longterm . And the regular rain gear got damaged easily.

After we got our post storm damage squared away. We took charge of the area and did our own street clearing and helping folks as we could. We are not the type to wait for others to do for us. And it does help , I think for the future for the others to at least get the idea for some sort of additional prepping for the future.

Just some random thoughts from our “adventure”.

That's a great post! You might keep an inventory of loaner tools so you know when something didn't make it back. I'm not suggesting itemizing it by who borrowed just a list of what you have to loan. That would at least let you know to ask around about the log splitter;). Glad you guys came through okay. This type of response has always been my experience. Everyone pitching in to help. Not only in the two states I've lived in but even in the disasters I've worked.

Finally back online. Lost power for a couple of days, but nothing major. Cooked on the grill and read by candle light.

All I gotta say is that it's disheartening to hear the news and people talk about how NY was devastated. The current death toll for NY is 48, which is terribly sad. Some people lost their homes, which is also very sad. But we have food and shelter available. Hell, it was available before the storm hit. Our utilities are already coming back online (mine were out from monday afternoon until thursday evening). I didn't have cable at first, but that came on a day later. Sorry, we're not devastated, we're mostly inconvenienced. Katrina was devasting, as were the earthquakes in japan and the south pacific.

The current absurdity is the gas "problem". Seeing how absurd people are behaving in such a truly minor incident has me worried if we ever do get a cat 3 or higher in the tri-state area. Living in an area where everything you could want at any hour of the day in a short drive's distance has everyone around here so freaked out when we lose any of those comforts.
