Flu Shot?

I'd like to hear what ya'll have to say about the flu shot. This is the second year in a row,I feel terrible after getting it 2 years in a row. I am thinking that this is last time I get one. The CDC says low grade fever but cannot cause the flu, well I haven't taken my temp. but durn I feel bad!

It is physically impossible to catch the strain of flu the shot contained. You can catch another strain of flu. You can catch a cold. You can catch a train or a plane but you won't catch the strain that was in the shot.

I get one every year and a pneumonia shot every 5.

Can't catch the flu from the shot but it does take about a week to two for the shot to start working and protecting you. You can come down with something in the meantime.

Mr. B & I always get a flu shot and I generally do feel "something" afterwards but IMO it's a small price to pay considering that a full blast flu can really put you out of commission.

I read all the web info, it all seems to be a copy paste from the CDC. It may be a cold, I have run myself down on top of it. My Maw Maw passed away last week and I made the trip over the weekend to be with my family in MS. Haven't had a break for a few weeks. I just find it odd that it happened two years in a row.

Thanks Rick,She was 90 and Paw Paw had passed some 20 yrs. ago. It was her time and a full life she has lived. 14 great grandchildren would have to make a women proud. Saddest thing was when some of the family tried to call dibs on their stuff before she was in the ground. Dad had a hard time with that. He came up missing for lunch before the funeral. He called my cell and Me and my Brother had to go find him. Dad just said I am down the road, we didn't see him anywhere. I told my brother he is down at the creek, he always fshed as a kid. Sure enough we found him there, and we had a long talk with Dad, Me, and My Brother. He explained why he had walked off and was upset. We told Dad the stuff didn't matter and to let it all go. After our talk, I walked out back at Grandma's and thought for awhile myself. I noticed the clothesline was still there. I remembered how many catfish we had cleaned on the hook Grandpa had fashioned for us to do the job and wondered if it was still there. To my surprise it was, I took it from the clothesline and told Dad "See... everyone has overlooked what is really important".He knew exactly what I had in my hand, though it was crude and out of context. When it was all said and done, Dad seemed to be at ease. Before I left, I also took down the sign I had made my Grandparents some 30 yrs. ago with the family name on it. First time in my life I was able to be there for Dad, the way he has been there for me so many times.

I very much believe in the flu shot but I don't take one. What you might feel, CowboySurvival, is your immune system revving up. I have a hot immune system that gives me autoimmune problems so anything that wakes my immune system up when I don't need it is anathema. Some people most certainly do get sick after taking a flu shot (the package insert calls it general malaise or some such) but it's not the flu. And despite the fact that the government really, really wants you to have a flu shot, there are some people who really, really should not have it. If you have an allergy to eggs, you should not get it (if you do, it should be in a place prepared to deal with anaphylaxis). One thing that boggles my mind is all the teams equipped with hypodermics cruising around giving flu shots to masses of people and they don't carry anaphylaxis kits. The package inserts for the flu vaccines warn against this.

The other reason I don't do the flu shot is that I haven't had the flu since 1981 and I got over it in a three or four days. Since I work with the public and am exposed to everything that goes around, I feel like my defenses are pretty well established.

It can certainly affect your immune system. As do family passings and family get togethers. The flu shot is the only shot still allowed to contain Thimerosal, mercury. I wont take them.

Flu shots make me sick too. They used to offer them free at work. Within two hours I'd be light-headed and sweating, then for a week I'd feel like crap. I won't do them any more. It wasn't a coincidence.

I had a flu shot in '66 and didn't like it one bit. I haven't had one since, nor have I had the flu. However, I work at a prison and am probably exposed to a lot of crap. And when I was very young, I played in a dirt yard, and probably ate a few handfuls. I also let the family dog lick my face and I don't always wash my hands. I think it pays to keep your body's defenses sharp.

You're not alone in feeling the way you do about change in general. But you get used to it because you don't have a choice and then it becomes a constant.

The FLU shot can be pretty controversial. I am not a doctor, so really, my advice is not based on anything factual. Basically, don't listen to me. My kids and wife get the shot every year. I don't. I had to get it every year in the military, and when I was a kid. I always got sick afterwards. It sure felt like the flu, even if it wasn't. I hate shots, and if I don't have to, then I ain't. I have 4 kids in public school. They bring home a lot of crap.

All my grandparents are dead now. My grandma made it the longest at 88. My dad's dad was a surprise. He was very healthy at 86, then within a few months he went. He lived in his own house and biked around in his fancy trike all over the neighborhood. He was a frogman and helped the marines land on Okinawa, so being in shape was always important to him. After he died, my dad took me into his closet to see if some of his suits fit me. To my surprise, the suits were perfect fits, and even his dress shoes and custom cowboy boots fit me. I have a weird sized foot and always had problems finding boots that fit. Now I know where I got them from. They are the only cowboy boots I will ever wear. I am not a fan of cowboy boots. My cousins were able to get all the "good" stuff before I arrived. However, I was surprised at all the stuff I got that everyone else passed up. I think it was the same feeling that you had, they were things I did with grandpa. Last month I built a bird house with my son for his Bear Scout award. We used grandpa's nails from a bucket in his garage, with grandpa's hammer, and grandpa's handsaw. I still am using up grandpa's collection of loose screws to fix this and that. My daughter caught a trout on grandpa's fly this summer. I still have a lot of his lures and flys. I use grandpa's wheat grinder to make bread. That thing is over 50 years old. And I use his wheat, which is 30 years old. Everyone else wanted to throw it all away, 20 buckets worth. My wife uses the quilting frame that he built for grandma. And, I have his book shelfs as well. We get a lot of use out of the tools and things that others thought were just old stuff not worth anything. Anyways, I am sorry for your loss. My wife's grandma looks to be really close. We might be making a trip to Dallas within a month or two.

Lol nope not surprised at all. I actually do a lot of vaccine research. Due to my son's conditions and other reasons, we do not vaccinate. He did have a Hep A vaccine once because it was prevalent in school for a couple of years. They've both had the TB titer because TB is very common here, especially with people coming in from the villages. But it's not a vaccine.

The boyfriend and I got our 'flu shots a month ago,a week later I was sicker'n a dog,but it wasn't a virus,it was definitely a bacterial infection,Amoxicillan didn't work finishing up the second antibiotic which I cannot pronounce the name of and spent way too much money for.However,I do get "something" everytime I take that blasted shot.

I've said this before so I'll just be repeating myself but you folks that don't vaccinate or otherwise take precautions simply don't remember the days when homes were quarantined and some disease, deadly diseases, were rampant. You don't remember them because vaccinations and other shots removed the threat for you. If folks stop vaccinating and taking other precautions then heaven help us all when those diseases return. Things like mumps, rubella, measles, TB (which we are starting to see a resurgence of), diptheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio and chickenpox are just a handful of diseases that were literally rampant when my generation were kids. My home was quarantined because I had the "good" mumps. I'll let you figure out the difference between good and bad mumps.

I had an MMR booster 2 years ago because of an outbreak of measles. No problems at all.

It would be sad indeed for a parent to stand over the bed of their deceased child because they died of an entirely preventable illness. Obviously, some kids will be outside the norm because of allergies etc. but the vast majority can take the vaccinations.

I had mumps Rick,January 1st,1974 after 3 vaccines against it,1st was the regular scheduled baby shot,second was after we moved to Florida and they lost my shot record in the move,had to get it again before I could start school,then we moved back to Indiana,and again my shot records couldn't be found so I took another series of shots,including the mmr,quarantined for 14 days away from my siblings.I looked like a chipmunk with its cheeks stuffed,with a silk ribbon tied around my neck to keep them from "falling"

Actually a lot of research can be done online. Yes, there are actually FACTS, online, available at your fingertips. People should take responsibility for their own healthcare. The old "ask your doctor" routine is pretty outdated. Even healthcare professionals prefer when people educate themselves a bit on most health care issues that affect them.

Only I know what research I've done, what training I've had and what conversations I have had with medical care providers. Only I know my son's condition and what's right for him. You all do what's right for you and your family. I'll do what's right for mine.

I had a long a fruitful career in healthcare and dutifully had a flu shot every year; I still do.
Last fall, I had the flu shot and a pneumovax, and that was the first time that I ever had any reaction. I had the malaise for over two days. I was worried when I got the flu shot this fall, but I felt nothing afterwards.
The immune system is very tricky. After we experienced a couple of inmates die due to the flu, we started offering the shot in jail. We always had an epipen on our person when we did this.
There would be serious medicolegal consequences giving any vaccine without epinephrine immediately available.

As for me getting the vaccine, no I won't, but not cause of any beliefs against it and such, its just I don't consider the flu to be deadly to me, at least not the strain they are vaccinating for as far as I'm aware. It will put me in bed for a few days if I catch it, but that's about it. I couldn't tell you if I've had the flu or not in years past. Generally I catch a couple of things every year, but that's about it.

I guess the biggest ethical problem involved with vaccination (and why the government and insurance companies wants people so badly to get vaccinated) is that people with the flu give the flu to others. I'm old fashion - I still believe that responsibility is a good thing.

My doctor reccomends all senior citizens, which I am one, get a flu shot and every five years a pneumovax shot. I havn't got mine yet this fall because my doctor reccomended that I wait until about November first so that the shot would still be working in late winter/early spring, which he says is the critical time around here for flu outbreaks.

I spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy and received flu shots regularly until 1976. That year they gave us the swine flu and regular flu shot at the same time and I nearly died. I was told I had a severe allergic reaction and could no longer receive the flu shot. Don't know if it was the combo of the two or what but for two weeks it was touch and go I was told. I have not had one since. I do not know about the pneumonia shot, will have to talk to my doc about it. I probably should get it since I am prone to getting pneumonia (had it in Sep last year with two bad relapses before I got over it).

Yeah, I wasn't sure. I know some vaccines use a dead strain and others use a live, but weakened strain. If its live you can get sick.

However, I don't put much faith in doctors when they say something you take won't make you sick. I'm 2 for 2 when it comes to nuclear medicine, which the docs swore wouldn't make me sick. Also, the severity of my ick was directly related to the strength of my RAI pill. Basically anything you put in your body can make you sick, doctors can only say the odds are against it, which they will rarely do.

Doctors aren't Gods and medicine isn't an absolute science. There have been exceptions to about every rule you can imagine so we take calculated risks that we're comfortable with.
The last flu bout I had was 14 yrs ago and it couldn't have happened at the worst time. I was in the midst of preps for one of the most important business pitches of my career and the next thing I knew I was incapacitated and out of commission. Up to that point I was quite adept at working while feeling like $hit but this was a whole new level of misery. After that I started getting flu shots every year and never missed work because I felt too sick to work.
A flu shot gives me the piece of mind that whatever I might come down with will be less incapacitating than if I didn't get one. I can function with general malaise but can't take a chance on being taken out of the game for any period of time.

My Mother had a lung transplant in 02....The doctor asked that all family members get a flu shot annually.

Once we got them....we couldn't be around her for 3 to 4 days.

I got them for the first 4 years.....and got sick as a dog every time....yet the kids and the Mrs never had a bit of issues.

I stopped taking them....and never got the flu for the next 5 years....this year is TBD.

I personally think a lot of it has to do with the person getting them....some folks are more sensitive to them than others.

I read that what happens is called a "Histamine Reaction", which is your immune system reving up to fight off the false alarm that makes you feel sick. Now, would that correlate to a severe reaction for someone with a strong immune system or someone with a weak immune system. I am feeling a bit better today, actually got a fair amount done yesterday, hauled hay for the horses and replaced the radiator and clutch fan in my truck. I guess I am still on the fence about my choice to continue to get the shot or not...

Well, it's not actually a false alarm. The way a vaccine works is that it gives the immunity system - the antibodies and white blood cells and such - a sample of what to recognize as an invader, then it sends them out on a practice run. The body revs up to fight off a simulated invasion so when the real thing occurs, it will know exactly what to do. The problem with some of us is that our immunity is so "hot" that, after it attacks the invaders, it's still revved up so it attacks whatever else it can find to attack - which happens to be the body. Fever, chills, lethargy, sweating, swelling, abscesses, burning and redness, etc. may seem like bad things because they don't feel good, but they're all part of the way bodies fight off diseases, so they actually are good - in moderation.

But in a survival situation, they have to be managed. For instance, if bacteria get under your skin, the body walls it off in a little bubble called an abscess. The problem is, of course, that when it's on your foot and you have to walk to escape a dangerous situation, you have to modify the system's response (by padding the abscess, by lancing it and packing it with Neosporin something different from the way the body would handle it). If you eat something that doesn't need to be in you, it's very natural to vomit, but that sends you toward dehydration, which is a dangerous thing in a survival situation.

Following up on Rick's caveat, I have a Smallpox vaccination scar on my left shoulder, and a much MUCH smaller one on my right shoulder. I got the DPT vaccine as a preschooler, etc. I have direct memory of local kids being stricken by something called "infantile paralysis" (the earlier name for polio), and seeing pictures of them lying in a terrible-looking device called an "iron lung". I remember that the first polio vaccine - the Salk vaccine - in 1955 produced a lot of very undesirable side effects, whereas a later one in the 1960's (Sabin) did not.

I remember catching the "Red Measles" (Rubeola) in the First Grade, the Mumps in the Second Grade and the Chicken Pox in the Third Grade. I don't remember many details other than the recurring, extremely weird dream I had whenever I was running a high temperature which, with these three diseases, was frequently. I remember my father being VERY sick, during this same period, from double pneumonia and pleurisy. I caught the "German Measles" (Rubella) in the Fifth and Eighth grades. I remember regularly receiving a Tetanus booster, and since I was in the woods and rivers and lakes with the Boy Scouts a lot, the Typhoid series and annual boosters. There were a couple of more thrown in for good measure, but I don't recall what they were. Then, in 1964 and 1965 I got two rounds of the "Uncle Sam series."

In other words I am no stranger to inoculations, to the side-effects that may follow them, nor to the potential consequences of not getting them. In fact, I wholeheartedly support most of them.

I just won't take the flu vaccines because they are three-for-three on making me sicker than the proverbial dog.

On this one I don't pay attention to what my HMO doctor says because he's always trying to diagnose me as having conditions I don't have, simply because "the book" says men of my age often have them. This while he's continually denying, ignoring or downplaying long-term conditions I've previously been diagnosed as having, just because the same "book" says they either shouldn't exist or shouldn't exist here.

Yes, I'm going to change physicians just as soon as the noise, dust and confusions of "open enrollment period" begins to clear.

The nasal spray, put out this year, for the flu contains a live virus and has some claims of being more effective.
"For prevention of seasonal influenza infection, 2 different types of influenza vaccine are commercially available in the US: intranasal vaccine containing live, attenuated virus1 100 and parenteral vaccine containing inactivated virus subunits".
Mumps, smallpox are live and maybe others. Third world countries have used live polio viruses in their vaccines as well. The supreme court has stated that vaccines can not be made safe and therefore manufacturers can not be made liable for damages in a court of law. Check sources and studies since they are more important than recommendations or opinions. Arguments on both sides can bring out facts that help people decide for themselves. I recall drinking the sugar drink and the shots for polio. I'm not a proponent of some of the mandatory vaccinations. I think the recommended number of vaccinations has become way overboard and risky and I won't take the flu vaccine. At the same time, some vaccinations have seemed to perform miricles. I had an aunt that died in the 40's that probably would have lived had she been vaccinated.

When I was in the third grade (I think) they lined everyone up and herded us through like cattle. You anti-gov types would have a stroke if you had seen us. They used a device called a jet injector. All very top secret super government stuff back then. We had already been told, by 4th graders I'm sure, that if you flinch it could cut your arm off so the whole class was in tears standing at the door waiting our turn. I can remember the plastic bubble they taped over it. You had to leave the bubble on until the scab fell off. I kept a keen eye on that arm in the mirror every morning and night looking for signs of my arm coming loose.

Heh. Maybe I'm lucky. I came along well before the airgun. Of course, I also came along before the disposable needles. They used to use, sterilize, and reuse the same needles. After a while, they would develop burrs on them and the doctor or nurse would have to take a grinder or whetstone to them to "deburr" them. I know exactly why I hate needles today. I was going to the doctor for my regular vaccination and I was going to be a "big boy" and go in without Daddy. Well, I was the one that let the doctor know (quite noisily) it was time to deburr the needle. I've hated needles since then.

But then, at 59, what with heart problems, dental repairs, and blood work three times a year, I'm sorta getting used to them.....

Yep. One of the worst things about the "Spanish Flu" (as they called it then) Pandemic of 1918-19 was the disproportionately large number of young people it took. Most of the soldiers were pretty young, and it went thru the camps on both sides of the Atlantic like a whirlwind. In fact, more soldiers died from this flu than were killed in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam combined. And that doesn't even consider the toll it took among the civilians...

One speculation about why so many young people died centered on the relative "inexperience" of their immune systems.

ADDENDUM: From the "More Than You Ever Wanted to Know" Department, regarding my own "experienced" immune system:

I smoked from 1962 until about 10 years ago -- sometimes as much as 3 packs a day. From the mid-1970's until I finally managed to kick the habit (it took me six tries), I'd be among the first to catch that year's newest upper respiratory infection. I'd get over it, and everyone else would catch it. Then they'd get over it, and I'd catch it AGAIN.

This is the period where the flu shots actually caused the problems they were intended to prevent. [Yeah, I know that what I was catching wasn't the flu, but an opportunistic infection that invaded while my immune system was busy with the vaccines.] I nearly lost my job twice, during two different winters, simply because I couldn't stay well long enough to get my work done.

In the early 2000's I developed the early stages of chronic bronchitis which, as many of you know, is one of the forms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD. Another form is emphysema, which often follows chronic bronchitis. That's when I made up my mind to quit.

Now that I'm no longer torturing my lungs and immune system, they have bounced back with vigor. I have only caught a cold twice in the past 7 or 8 years (both as a direct result of air travel btw), and both were very minor. A doctor recently told me that I now have "Johnny Weissmuller* lungs." I wouldn't go nearly as far as that, because I still get out of breath a bit more quickly than I probably should. But my regular exercise regimen - walking, bicycling - is helping it to get better each month.

Anyhoo, I'm thinking that my much-abused immune system is probably extremely experienced -- especially with respiratory infections.

I've said this before so I'll just be repeating myself but you folks that don't vaccinate or otherwise take precautions simply don't remember the days when homes were quarantined and some disease, deadly diseases, were rampant. You don't remember them because vaccinations and other shots removed the threat for you. If folks stop vaccinating and taking other precautions then heaven help us all when those diseases return. Things like mumps, rubella, measles, TB (which we are starting to see a resurgence of), diptheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio and chickenpox are just a handful of diseases that were literally rampant when my generation were kids. My home was quarantined because I had the "good" mumps. I'll let you figure out the difference between good and bad mumps.

I had an MMR booster 2 years ago because of an outbreak of measles. No problems at all.

It would be sad indeed for a parent to stand over the bed of their deceased child because they died of an entirely preventable illness. Obviously, some kids will be outside the norm because of allergies etc. but the vast majority can take the vaccinations.

Rick, I have taken all the vaccines before. I have even taken anthrax and small pox vaccines. I had a tetnus shot a few months ago. All my kids are up to date with theirs. That subject is unrelated to whether I take a flu shot or not.

Well, I am good at taking people out of context. It's a talent I have.
I also believe in taking preventative vaccines for all those things that you listed as bad news in the past.
I don't believe the flu vaccine in the same animal. I choose to not take it, it is the only one I choose not to take, and I am not a doctor, so don't listen to me.
I also believe in going to work sick and then coughing on my hand and rubbing in on the HR directors door knob. But, that is a different subject all together.

I think it depends on the season to be honest. I take them just as a matter of due course but most years influenza is not a great threat unless you are old (I do get the AARP discount so there!), young or compromised. The rest of the population is probably in good steed if they don't take it. But wait until the big swineyaviancroopflu hits!!

I figure anyone who is partially responsible for the sick leave policy deserves to get sick more often. ;) The guy that actually makes the decision is gone all the time flying his personal jet......so I can't do it to his door knob. Plus, it wouldn't matter if he took off the whole year for sick leave. At least this way the HR director can complain to him to change it. Well, that's my theory anyways. I am probably way off.
