View Full Version : Nuclear reactor melt down and bugging OUT.

Let's talk about BUGGING'OUT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What would you expect it to look like or be like assuming you have no set destination. Assume that three nuclear reactors have been terrorized in your area. At this time the wind is 8 to 12 MPH AWAY from your home/residence.

However the wind will shift to your direction at 17 to 22 MPH starting tomorrow. How far away do you really think you will get, how would you travel (Try to think OUTSIDE the box).

Example: I am a pilot and have access to small aircraft, or if you had a hot air balloon you could wait for the wind to shift tomorrow and take off, you could put an intertube or anything that floats into a river (maybe, depends on direction the river flows).

I think it is safe to assume you may get some distance in a car, I'll leave it to you estimate that distance.

Do you take any time at all to pack, or just leave this instant......?

Would you be better off going ninty degrees from the direction or would you hope to out run the radiation.

guess I need to get that passport asap. All the Nuclear plants are to the south of us, Canada to the north, but when I stop and think about it, maybe I will just see how the wind blows and wait it out.

Well the safe zone isn"t all that far, In Japan they only made people move around 28 miles away from what i remember. Could be off a little on the mileage but really, it isn't all that far to the safe zone. But I would still load my trailer and get out of here. I think I would go to Kyrat's and hang out:smartass:

That's an interesting question.....for a long time we had a close-by nuke power, actually still do, but have been shut down for a long time....Not saying that it couldn't possibility cause a problem....
There was an official map with routes and rules, and circles of doom, radiating out form the plant it self....and i have to say that it probably still valid.

I'd be in the truck and on my way out, most needed necessary gear already packed, and we keep fuel tanks full or nearly so, with first BOL, 2nd BOL and good back ups if necessary.

Prevailing winds are away from us, not saying the winds couldn't shift

This may not be true for you Sourdough.. And perhaps other members... But around me, never underestimate how far you can travel on a bike!!!! I Mt bike a lot, I typically can cover 10 miles in an hour, on fairly rough trails, while not really pushing that hard... That's with a small pack on my back.
On the road, with a slightly bigger pack, pushing all out to get away from a nuclear disaster... I guarantee I can cover more distance...
Honestly I'd take my truck with the bike in the bed.... When traffic gets too tough.. It's abandon the truck and hit the pedals.

Pending some additional research, I might just decide to seal myself in and ride it out.
Trying to quickly get anywhere safe while facing traffic and pedestrian gridlock would not be a smart move in NYC.

Yep, as soon as you leave the house you are a refugee.

That is the official name for a person with a BOB.

Strange the difference between he safe zones in Japan and the Ukraine. When Chernobal melted down they evacuated half of Europe. I wonder what was behind that?

Even this U.S. advisory claims a contamination zone of only 28-30 miles! Is that simply to prevent panic or is that the distance to the nearest large population center?

If not I'll bet the Soviets have one fantastic secret research/military facility near the Chernobel site that no one will go near for fear of the radiation exposure.

I was discussing this topic with a hunting buddy last evening, who has traveled and lived in different places, in the service.

Talked about the local plant and the old maps with necessary information (from government)....then he related that in different location, the maps and such are published in the local phone books. Didn't find any in ours?

Now it seems that newspapers are becoming a fading media in a lot of places....leaving a gap in media coverage to the general populace.

I bring this up basically to see "What everyone else is doing", so that I can plan alternatives for my routes and decisions.

Now along with this......makes me wonder how the "Big Bug Out" would be handled by authorities.....Road blocks, Check points, goods confiscated (for our own good, of course)....etc.

Might not be as simple to just "Bug Out"
Anyone taken these thoughts into consideration?

Maybe a good idea to see what organizations are in place locally so as to 'join them, rather than fight them.

I live about 135 miles from the largest nuclear facility in the US. I used to live about 36 miles from it.
What? Me worry?
BTW, I used to drive State 35 back and forth to work, and I LMAO because I passed by this shuttered nuclear power plant with a mountain of coal right next to it.
Only in Wisconsin...

Interesting post SD.

My greatest concern would be the lack or intentional withholding of critical information by government officials. The news reports from Fukishima were repeatedly skewed towards a best-case scenario. The Japanese government also "revised" safe exposure levels in the days following the event making large adjustments to what they claimed were still safe levels of exposure. While the full extent of the disaster may never be known, it seems clear that the early reports all understated the real severity of the situation. Seems like the Soviets reacted in a similar fashion with the Chernobyl event. Based on their history, I don't expect much more of our own government officials.

For my situation, I would try to determine the best course of action by assessing the type(s) of isotopes being released and how these were likely being transmitted. Some have very short half-lives and emit the less harmful alpha and beta rays. It might make more sense to seal-off a sheltered area (ie your home) and await more accurate information (especially if you are already outside of any likely exclusion zone). Running for the sake of running without the ability to accurately measure enviromental exposure doesn't make much sense to me. For the record, I live more than 150 direct miles from the nearest nuclear power plant. Two more reactors lie some 190 direct miles away at another facility. If I were within 30 miles of a damaged reactor, I would have some plans in place for evacuating to a minimum of 30 miles and use prevailing winds and best means of transportation to determine my direction of travel.

Under that scenario, I would take the bare necessities and get moving. A few minutes of delay could easily result in many frustrating hours of gridlock in the event of a mass evacuation. I would have multiple pre-planned routes and include some lesser used alternates in case I found myself in the midst of stop & go traffic.

A tin foil hat would at least protect your brain from isotopes................Wouldn't it:confused:

If I'm not mistaken, a few millimeters of tin foil is an excellent shield for beta rays.

The biggest problem would be masses of people fleeing in panic in all directions, clogging all the roads in grid lock. When Three Mile Island in Pennsyvlania had that accident, I had a female cousin living near by. She paniced, grabbed the kids and fled several hundred miles west to her parents home and never told her husband that she was leaving. And there wasn't any meaningful leak of radiation beyond the plant boundries! Unless you livbe dirrectly down wind, I would stay and seal up the doors and windows, ect to keep out the radioactive dust. The first rain will wash most of it away from the house.

In Japan, DoD did not allow American personnel within 50 miles of Fukushima, nor to help with rescue efforts. All ships that were permanently based in Japan are rotated out and spend more time East of Japan than they do in their "home" port. They spend very little time in home port.

Our DoD Nuke Boys do their own work, check their findings against each other and do it again before giving it to their bosses. By time any information reaches us, the lowly masses, it is dumbed down, information stripped and turned into cartoons.

The Japanese government lied to its people so they would not panic. Expect the same from ours. Hillary Clinton gave her word she would not block trade with Japan even on contaminated food. She has kept her word.

Anyone worried about dangerously high radiation levels should stay out of Southern Idaho, most of Utah and quite a bit of Nevada. Avoid Hanford in Eastern Washington and Umatilla in Eastern Oregon. don't eat fish from the Columbia River.

The first rain will wash most of it away from the house. Then what? What happens to it?

What exactly would you have had American personnel do? It was a Japanese problem. Why would we want to put our sons and daughters in harms way one more time? If they had, everyone would be griping that we sacrificed our personnel for Japan. Why is it our job? If I had a son or daughter stationed on a ship near the reactors I'd be thrilled that they spend very little time in their "home" port.

Perhaps you should check your facts on the food. Food WAS banned from Japan. Not only did the FDA halt all imports of dairy and produce, the U.S. military banned all food from 26 plants in Japan that serviced U.S. bases there.

Our young men and women in the service wanted to get in and be heros, and were very frustrated. It took awhile for them to realize the hazzards. The out of port ship rotation variables only glare by looking at long term patterns. It's a big change.

I'm glad Hillary finally made the import ban, how much food got in before she finally did? What's the date she banned them? Folks here on the west coast were munching packaged dry seaweed for iodine without checking its source. Use By dates give very little information on harvest and export date.

I would suggest you research the issue and then you'll know. If someone feels as strongly about a subject as you appear to about this I'm a little hard pressed to understand why they would not spend the time researching it. As much coverage as this event had by non-biased media it's pretty easy to look up. While you're at it, you should look up the Operation Tomodachi Registry.

For a moment, put yourself in charge of a nation. You not only have a disaster to contend with but the ongoing economy and security of your nation. If you announce the worst case scenario what happens? In this case, an entire fishing industry shuts down. Even those in Okinawa Prefecture 1100 miles away. The same with produce and dairy. Even where it is not affected. That means all of those folks are now out of work. Throw in the rice farms and cattle production. You already know that electricity is out to most of the auto support industries so they are shut down, too. How does that impact the economy? You also have to consider the intangibles like goodwill and how it affects global commerce with your country. Suddenly "Made in Japan" is something to be avoided.

These are not straight forward issues with black and white answers. Government leaders, like business leaders, have to consider the overall impact and weigh the consequences of every report they put forward. And sometimes they just don't know so they have to revise reports when better data is available.

Realize, too, that everyone has the ability to play Monday Morning Quaterback and second guess or find fault with any decision made. If you run the country then you have to make the decisions in real time with whatever data is available. Sometimes you guess wrong.

SD - To answer your question, we have a good dozen nuclear reactors upwind from us. Almost all are in Illinois. If your scenario played out I would sit tight. There are not only federal government but plenty of state, municipal and private organizations that will be performing testing; many at private labs and universities. You should be able to get a reasonable estimation on the size of the release, if any, direction of travel and possible downwind contamination. If necessary, I would travel a southern route at a 90° angle from the spread by vehicle.

Governments should gather the pertinent data and experts to develop an intelligent response which places the safety of all effected above any economic concerns. Disasters breed chaos. The larger the event, the greater the chaos. You run the risk of compounding the probelm if you fail to deal with it in honestly and openly. If you don't know, communicate what you're actively doing to assess the situation, then offer the best advice you can with what you do know. Maintaining credibility insures the best means of organizing an efficient response to the crisis.

I read the post a little differently. I do not believe Rick was saying or implying that industry should be placed above the safety of the people at all, but rather as a leader (call it government) they have the duty to act in a responsible manner. Did they do that? I suppose that will be the subject of debates for many years to come, just as the government response to Katrina has been. What I got from the post was that if leaders created fear and panic, it not only would not have served those in the affected area, but also those that were not. Protecting the people is of the utmost importance, but causing them harm due to irresponsible actions serves no one.

My own philosophy in this reguard is that officials fear public panic more than they fear public extinction. They can always cover their tails by claiming they feared they would create panic, which is actually saying they feared they would lose control of the public. Every action they take is about being in control.

They would rather have control of dead people than lose control of live ones.

Thank you, Crash. At least someone read my post. The whole essence is that irresponsible reporting does the very thing you don't want done. I don't know if they handled it correctly or not and I'm not about to try and second guess them. But by doing what you are advocating you would have put people out of work 1000 miles away. They would not have been able to provide an income, buy food or pay their bills. Multiply that across the country and you have now placed everyone in the country in jeopardy all because someone in Alaska or Idaho or PNW or Belize wants the worst case scenario published. I doubt very seriously whether the Prime Minister of Japan gives two hoots in he!! what I thought of his handling of the situation. He did what he thought was best and doesn't have to answer to me. And since no one on this site knows the truth one way or the other this is all just an exercise in hypothetical thinking.

By the way, WE are public officials. Do you think there is some special breeding program to raise them? They come from us. If you don't like what they are doing then run for office or elect someone else. EVERY government official is condemned on this forum by people who have no desire to fill the role and only complain. If you are not the solution then you are the problem.
