View Full Version : State Farm to Monitor Driving Habits

I know this has nothing to do with wilderness survival but wanted to give everyone a heads up on the subject.

I sat down with my State Farm insurance agent last week discussing the purchase of my Sienna XLE. I was asked if Toyota had OnStar and I said no. I was told that State Farm has a new program called the Drive Safe and Save program that is voluntary (for now) and let's State Farm have real time access to your driving habits. In return, they reduce your premium by 10% and they are saying it could be as much as 50% but I'll believe that when I see it. So far, Toyota is NOT a part of the program according to my insurance agent but you have to wonder how long it will be before Toyota ponies up, how long it will be before other insurance companies hop on the band wagon and how long it will be voluntary. I don't know anyone that thinks they are a bad driver despite the dumb stuff I see on the roadway every day (not me you understand. Other drivers. I'm a good driver). So you sort of have to judge this one for yourself. Especially if you have other vehicles beside Toyota. Just thought I'd pass along what I learned.

Big Brother is slowing gathering information on you as you blindly give access thru technology and think it a good thing.
On Star can shut you down, If they can stop your car if it's get stolen, it can shut you down as well.
Track movements.....Is this what you really want to "feel safe"?

Personally it scares the he!! out of me........
When we get everyone with a bell on them....then.....what?

I like the idea of technology in cars, to an extent. I love what it does for performance and fuel efficiency, but I despise how invasive it has been as of late. OnStar has bothered me from the start. What scares me about it is that many vehicles with OnStar have it integrated with the car's computer, meaning it can never be totally disabled, much less removed. It means upgrading your truck's computer to a programmable model is out of the question, because if your vehicle has OnStar standard, you likely won't be able to find an after-market performance board (maybe just an add-on chip, if you're lucky).

And now, most cars come with built-in navigation systems, and everything ... absolutely everything in some models ... is accessed through a touch screen on the dash. If you want to change radio stations, you need to access the right menu. You have to navigate the system to tell you where you are and where you're going. It takes cars out of drivers' hands, their eyes off the roads, and puts Big Brother (whether it's the Government directly, or just the 'service provider,' it's just as appalling to me) in the passenger seat with far too much access.

There's just too much wrong with some things in today's cars. I prefer to drive when I drive. If I need directions, I have maps, the Internet, my smart phone, and I can opt to purchase a dashboard GPS unit that's powered by but not otherwise connected to my car. None of those can turn it off, none of them (as far as I'm aware, at least for shopping carefully) report back to their home what I'm doing.

By all means build cars with computers that improve fuel usage, braking, and some other minor amenities. But then let the car be mine.

Rick some insurance company's have an instrument that plugs into the OSB II port, ( diagnostic port ) and will record your driving trends. To my knowledge, you dont need On Star to get the discount based on actual driving data, unless they are set up to only use satellite based data.
Personally I dont want anything or anybody tracking my driving habits. What if they were monitoring you, and you had a wreck. It could be possible that your own information could be used against you, all in the effort to save a small amount of money!

Well, that's certainly true. I know of several court cases that involved the LEO downloading the data through the OSB port to determine speed, whether seat belts were fastened and when brakes were applied. The difference here is this is live, real time, monitoring. I don't have it and don't want it.

I had my hearing aids reprogrammed a couple of weeks ago. He plugged them into the computer and it displayed what settings I use, how often I use each setting and how long the aids are on during the day. I was a bit shocked. When they come out with a farts-n-tracker I'm outta here.

They make it sound like such a wonderful thing. When you check out the info it tracks your mileage and say it "can" save you money. Yeah, if you don't drive that much. They probably jack your rates up based on risk if you drive a lot.

We, as ordinary people, have absolutely no idea what the two major auto manufacturers owned by the government have already included in the on board programing in each vehicle, which is just waiting to be activated.

The government owns big chunks of both Chrysler and GM. Do you really think they would bother to ask permission if they wanted to include tracking features?

It's all for the good of society, only a radical subversive would object, correct? What do you guys have to hide anyway?

Some stores are using facial recognition, using your face book picture to give you "coupons" when you enter their store.....Yeah right.

I'm not a big believer of black helicopters and such.....but it do make you wonder.....I don't need no stinking coupons.....

Our local TV station has a promotion that's based on facebook, you have to go LIKE them to enter.......I e-mailed a complaint, and the answer i got was a basic "Tough shut"

It does make you wonder what all the apps you allow on the phone,.......can do...( I don't do that stuff)

Well if the S ever hits the fan, it would be interesting to know how facebook would be used to track where people are and what they are doing. It seems like the average facebook user tells way too much about their life and activities. If anthing bad ever happens in the US, I am going to stay off line as much as possible, and for the most part, dissapear from the cyber world!

They wouldn't need Facebook. You carry a GPS equipped cell phone. That phone number has access to a slew of information including name, address, all the way to credit checks if one wanted to access it.

...so someone please explain to me why anyone (govt., insurance, bad people, ex girlfriend, etc) would want to keep track of you in particular when TSHTF?
I'd guess maybe they'd be a little busy, but what do I know?

So the idea that your every move can and most likely is being added to a data base somewhere, doesn't give you a little twinge?
I'm sure there are bigger fish to fry.......I'm still not comfortable with it.....

Let's say it's true and there's actual manpower to monitor our every move.
What are they gonna do with that info? They have a hard enough time keeping up with criminals, mental cases and congressmen tweeting pics of their private parts...do you seriously think they're interested in following you to yard sales, gun shows and randezvous?

LOL, probably not,...... I'm pretty boring as far as any revolutionary thoughts and actions go.....Don't forget tromping around, chasing after poor defenseless animals, birds, plants, and such.....
It is kinda disconcerting when you call someone and they already know who they are talking to, age, income, and preferances.....though.

That's just me......

Well let's pretend that the US is in a mashall law condition. The data collected from cell phones, computors, Facebook, and social media in general has been data logged for some time now. They could sort the information by who bought the most mail order ammo, who ordered the most survival gear, or who ordered the most Mountain House food. That sort of information could be used to identify who is well armed, and who are the potential survivalists, that they can focus on. It is my opinion that in some cases, the government consider survivalists as a kind of mild terrorist. I hope i am wrong about that but that is the way it seems.
The governement have main frame computors that data log, and trend information based on what they want to see. It allows them to track terrorists, money launderers, and all kinds of criminal activities. So it isn't all bad until they use the information against innocent people that are doing nothing but trying to be prepared.
Will they use the information for that purpose, I dont know, but I do know the information is there, and it can be sorted and used in any way they want.
So Nesse, it doesn't take a lot of manpower because the main frames are there, and they are programmed to capture and trend everything that crosses the internet, cellular services, and business networks. It only takes crew of IT people to maintain the system.

It all depends on what the future holds for our society in general. Eventually 2=2 will equil 5.

If there are fewer people traveling due to economic problems, or complete lack of fuel, it will be much easier to monitor those few. WW2 fuel restriction was 5 gallons a week so rationing has precident in any emergency situation. Computer allocation of fuel for each trip, according to need, is as simple as putting your card in the slot on the pump.

We put too much emphisis on the "manpower needed" when it is not manpower but computer capacity in use. All the manpower is needed for is checking out the flags spotted and marked by the computer search.

Even without declaring Martial Law the control of travel could be restricted by requiring authorization for any trip out the driveway. Text in your travel request, the computer gives verification, unlocks your car and allocates specific fuel for the trip at the nearest pump. You deviate from the prescribed path and your vehicle shuts down, police are notified to come pick you up. On Star has that capacity now.

They still require "papers" for a trip between towns in some of the eastern block nations.

It's all for the good of society, why would any honest citizen object to simply asking permission before traveling. That is much better than the "worst thing in the world", just ask Winston Smith!

One more reason I DO NOT and WILL NOT own a newer vehicle as long as other options exixt. The "Goobermint" has there nose in enough of our affairs as it is now.
