Fear of "DEATH"

There are a lot of "Survival Forms" and even more "Survival Blogs". Why....???

You are not afraid of DEATH, at least you would never admit that fear to yourself, or anyone else. But is not some part of The obsession with Survival not based on fear of DEATH...(or maybe all of it).....???

If you look at the title's of the threads you see that most are based on fear of physical damage to the body and or Death, and how to avoid same.

And yet a large part of why we put ourself in a controlled "Harms Way", is the exhilaration of danger, and the remote possibility of Death.

I just find it odd that people will talk around Death, but rarely directly about Death. I often wonder if mans obsession with wealth is not a fear of death.

And why are some people scared to death of the "WILDERNESS"...????

And why am I scared every time I enter the civilized "CITY"...????

Why are people afraid of Grizzly Bears, and comfortable with three tons of steel coming at them doing 70 Miles Per Hour, and passing 36 inches away....???

If 40,000 to 50,000 people per year are killed on the highway why do we not have "Highway Survival" FORMS and BLOGS....??????:confused:

Man fears what he doesn't understand, this is called "fear of the unknown" and unfortunately we "man" tend to kill or fear what we do not understand, thus most do not understand the wilds or even bears so they fear them.

I agree, its mostly about what we understand or feel comfortable with vs the unknown. Unknown can be very fearful unless you are strong enough to see through it.

Perhaps its really "fear of the unknown". Death is THE great unknown.

But I suspect death isn't as bad as its made out to be, simply moving on to another level much like the stages of our lives baby => toddler => boy(or girl) => teen =>young adult =>mature adult => senior => death

Since there is no avoiding our eventual deaths, you may as well be fearless in life.

I don't have an answer for you Hopeak. I don't particularly fear death but maybe the way I'd die. That might be the difference. I'd much rather be shot by a jealous lover at 104 than be hacked to death next week. Don't particularly want to be eaten either but just not waking up in my warm bed doesn't seem so awful to me.

That's pretty much how I feel, too. I'm interested in death as far as then I'll get to find out if anything still happens afterwards (I don't think so but who knows?), but I definitely fear a whole number of ways of dying - some slow painful disease, drowning in the lake, breaking a vital limb out here while I'm alone and being unable to call for help...oh the options are endless! It translates for me into playing things as safe as I can and trying to get the utmost out of my life - pursueing my dreams instead of just dreaming them, and fighting for the things that are important to me.

Here's a question for you all. How do you know death is terrible and worthy of fear? Isn't your fear tinged with arrogance when you assume you know what you do not?

I have planned my own death. It will occur when I am 98 years old. I will be flying my private jet back home from a scuba diving trip to Aruba. My 22 year old girlfriend will be with me. After finishing a bottle of the finest wine and two or three bacon sandwiches, my girlfriend and I will again make love (for the fifth time that day) as my jet plummets into the ocean at 500 mph. :D

I don't want to be a burden to my family so no playing veggie waiting to wake up for yrs. No hesitation for the reasons you folks mentioned. Guess several of us have been close trying to figure out why the hell we were there. My last close call after the first few days in the hospital was kinda peaceful once you can accept it. I just want to go quick, and if I'm done in by someone I hope it was for something I believed in, and I took a few with me.

i fear death, especially after sittin through class today-comparative bioethics. the law has kind of made right to die/assisted suicide one giant pain in the a**. guess i'm mostly afraid of inadvertently losing the control to make that decision (thrown in a hospital, in a coma, without a durable power of attorney or clearly voiced preference).

I have strong spiritual convictions (which I won't go into), which allow me little worry about death. A couple of years ago I was in a shoot-out when I looked over at my partner and laughed out loud when I got a look at his eyes. They were wide as saucers and I could see his world had changed. He's probably a braver man than I for conquering his fear and not letting it consume him.

I won't say I'm without fear. I do think being paralyzed or crippled would be a really rotten way to live and I fear that, but death has little sting.

I always try to keep my beliefs or lack of beliefs out of forum type conversations. Personally I don't care if someone believe in the Easter Bunny as long as it comforts you.
Back in 1986 I came about as close to dying as I think I've ever come and there have been some close calls in my younger years, but this was what I thought "This is it".

I got caught in a big @$$ hydraulic on the Little Missouri river at flood stage and it would not spit me out and I could not swim out of it. I was taking in water and loosing breath at a pretty steady rate. I can clearly remember my thoughts as all this was going on and I had one thought on my mind.
"Who is going to drive my brand new truck back up to Illinois?"

This happened before I learned about he dynamics of how a hydraulic or "hole" works and it was the fact that I sank down out of the aerated water into a stronger current that pushed me out of the hole. Anyone familiar with white water kayaking will know this, but I wasn't that experienced at that time.

Short of dying some drawn out painful death, I can't say I have any fear of dying someday. I have a sense of grief for myself because of my consciousness ending because of my loved ones, but other than that... I hope it's with a bbq sandwich in one hand and a good crafted beer in the other.

But I am more afraid of long drawn out agonizing and emotionally / physically painful final walk for me and or my family - especially if that can be avoided.

The city is a far more hostile environment than the wilderness in many ways. I'm much safer walking in the woods.

I have never been afraid of dying when I was faced with it. It was always latter that I had fear. Like right before falling asleep. When I had the accident with the ATV that broke my leg, I didn't fear that I was going to die although it was a real possibility. My fear was that my hunting partner would get hurt or lost going for help. Or that the helicopter while it was trying to land on the side of the mountain would crash. After I got to the hospital all my fears were put to rest. Verset is in many ways is a miracle drug.

Not true for me. Fear of great, horrible, self induced pain, keeps me from doing arrogant things in such situations. I ran over my own toe with the trash can yesterday morning and said something like, "arrogant s.o.b.!" or something like that.

My interest in survival skills rests not in a fear of death, but in a wish to be comfortable in man's original environment. I say original because we have traded the garden of Eden for motel 6, and now cannot comfortably exist in the garden any longer. We as a species have forgot how. I want to relearn all that my forefathers forgot, though I will never be able to do so.

I can't say I fear death so much as a nasty way of dying. I hope to die in my sleep, or perhaps doing something that I really love. An aneurysm while tramping thru the woods would be a nice way to go. But in the end (pun unintended) I am ready; today, tomorrow, 65 years from now. I know who I am, I like who I am. That's all I really need to be ready when the time comes.
