I dont mean to be offensive to this forum buuuuuuut. I come from ST and there you could heated conversations about all sorts of preparedness topics. Even if the topic was a little out there. Rick, CrashBlade and others from ST you guys know this is just not as active and conversational website as TS. I know you guys are going to say well if you dont like it here leave.... but that is not what i want to say. Just the conversations are are just........not as grabbing as ST. What i mean is I would check on ST and there were new posts almost hourly that i liked or had to reply to but here i can look for a week and its millk toat with nothing really changing. i see many ST people here but just not the same vibe.....

There are quite a few differences between the two forums. The biggest being the focus based on the name and the categories as well as the membership of the direction that conversations took. ST had a lot of focus and emphasis on TEOTWAWKI and doom and gloom type scenarios. Many of the members there did not have much interest in "wilderness" unless it was bugging out because of the impending collapse of the government. Another area where things got lively over there was when religion or politics were discussed. Those are two areas we do not discuss on this forum. Is that good or bad? IMO it is good - can't tell you how many people I had to ban at ST over those two issues. Often the spirited debate would devolve into lunacy and not return.

As far as topics here that interest you - and I know that you know this - we (the membership) are responsible for the direction the forum takes. Each and every one of us have the power and ability to steer the direction the forum takes. In the past we've had members do their darndest to steer this forum down the path of doom and gloom, complete societal collapse, as well as other directions. The vast majority of the members decided that they did not want to go down that path.

Are there areas where you would like to see more focus that are not being discussed?

I should add - As Winnie said - there are slow periods, with warmer weather being one of those periods. Keeping in mind that the main focus here is all things outdoorsy - as the winter thaws come around (OK, not in Florida) people get outside more. Since that is their interest and passion it makes sense.

ST started as a wilderness site and morphed into a prepping site. This site has never been like that and had a lot of dual memberships before ST died.

Heated conversations occur when one person attempts to impose their will over another. Adults can discuss things in a calm and rational way. They don't have to agree but they don't have to jab each other in the eye, either. I'm not sure why you think heated conversations are a plus.

I doubt it. It was a very active site. ST died when an indifferent site owner dumped the members without warinig or even a KMA on the way out. Just pulled the plug.

I agree with Ms. B! It's been my experience that in a "head-butting" contest, usually the biggest "butt-head" wins! :hammer: I'd point out an example but politics is a forbidden topic on this site! :FRlol:

Techiedude, this site was in existence probably before ST. It is not a replacement of ST and it is unlikely it will ever be anything more than what you see here. That's what this member group wants. There are a lot of sites out there just do a search and you'll probably find what you're looking for.

WSF in a way reflects the norms I adhere to in real life.
The only sporting arguments and verbal calisthenics I can engage in without risking bruised feelings is with Mr. B. We share core beliefs but disagree on the finer points and that provides for endless hours of entertainment when there's nothing to do. I must say though, that I have expanded my views and even changed my mind about this 'n that, and hopefully, Mr. B has too; although he'd never admit it even under penalty of death.

Who wants to "Rrrrrrrrumble" I remember some good rumbles here. All of these "Prepping/Survival" forums are heavy populated by "Mental Masturbators", most however are just looking for a small piece of information that they can use on their "Blog" or run to another forum and look like they are skilled/knowledgeable.

My disappointment is so few think outside the box, and just regurgitate Mel Tappin theory (Most are oblivious to who Mel Tappin was, but still regurgating, just the same).

There is too much talk and too little action. People "Yap" about TEOTWAWKI but it is all theory, and no "Boots in the Field Practice". If I talk about pre-planned "Fall'back" positions or remote "Cache of supplies" in 55 gal. drums, I end up talking to myself. I think it is easy to jabber on a forum, but harder to get one's arse out into the bush.

Not many of us live your lifestyle, SD, so we don't have a lot in common in terms of needing fall back or caching gear. A lot of us or more driven to weather related planning so it becomes a little hard to have boots in the field for a hurricane or tornado. Better to have boots in a shelter. But I get your point.

I guess it's hard to not be able to "go home again" and seems like a lots of new people showed up here and thought the same thing.....Not much action after the first couple of posts.

I had just started to hang out a bit "over there' and found it intresting, a little on the D&G side for me.....but was sorry to see the total lack of class with the shutdown of that site.

Would have liked to see some new threads started by the newer members.....and it looks like a few are settling in.

I like this site better. Threads that started off reasonably on ST went off the rails too easily. I also had the sense that people were preparing for the end of the world, but wouldn't be able to handle a hurricane. I am happy to see some of the saner types from ST here. There is one member from ST I miss, Will. If any of you former ST folks know how to reach him, please let him know about this site.

The folks here are able to stay on point, and have a decent sense of humor. I've never been flamed here, which I can't say for ST.

Personally, I prefer the focus on Wilderness Survival. ST was a lil too D&G for me... And too many "experts" that I got the distinct impression would not survive anything worse than a traffic jam. I could be wrong, (1st for everything ;-) but seemed like a lot of keyboard commandos and just plain crazy folk over there... Though, certainly not as bad as some other forums, and not all the members were like that.... It's been a LONG time since I was there.
The good-natured ribbing and teasing you'll find here is a lot more fun than the flaming and trolling of other forums.

The biggest difference that I have seen here compared to ST has been the fact that we mods on ST were constantly doing damage control due to various firestorms, spammers, and trolls. I haven't seen that kind of thing here yet. It was always a daily occurance to watch for posts that were meant to cause dissention, push people's buttons, or overall just to create chaos. The BAN button was always in a constant state of readiness, and we had a lot of discussions over whether someone was over the line or not, or whether a post was destructive to the forum as a whole. I am not a mod here, so I am not in the loop on that score, but it doesn't seem like a lot of that type of thing is the norm around here. As a member, I prefer a quieter, more respectful forum to one where mods and admins are constantly having to decide people's fates and assauge people's hurt feelings. Some discussions are necessary, even in topics that are usually not allowed, like politics or religion, when such things directly impact the community or the nation. However, to have a blanket policy against just interjecting discussions on those topics to 'stir the pot' is a good thing, I believe. It serves no useful purpose to put in comments just to get reactions or to rile up some people, who you already know have strong feelings on the subject, and keeping people from doing that probably saves countless headaches for the mods and makes the forum a lot more pleasant for everyone. If someone misses those old battles and flameouts, there are PLENTY of other websites out there that thrive on such conflicts. I for one would rather have a place where folks get along and respect each other to a place where people are tooth and nail and constantly at each others' throats over stupid, petty things. Just my opinion.

The reason you don't see it is because most of it occurs before it hits the forum. We have our own part of the forum where we hold discussions as well as PMs. We also have a moderated section on the forum that catches a large part of the spam so members never see it. If you just look over the wall you'll find the mods battling fire breathing dragons, zombies and (shutter) Chinese spambots.
