Got Deet?

While I know that many here use it, I also know that there are some that don't want to expose themselves to it. I use it whenever I'm hiking in the woods, and today was no exception. Before I hit the trail I sprayed my boots, socks and legs with a fairly heavy coating of it. A lighter spray on my arms and neck followed. This was a new area for me to hike in, but knew there were going to be shaded, wet areas. As I hiked through the open Savannah there were no problems. When I started to "enter" the thicker growth areas I rolled down my sleeves and put on a mosquito head net. For about 2 miles the little blood suckers were very thick. When I stopped to take a picture they would literally cover the head net. As I exited the heavier growth the head net came off.

Not a single bite. I did have to go off trail quite a bit as the trails were submerged in areas. When I got back to the trail head I had a little lunch and was cleaning up - there were seven dead ticks on my socks. Those nasty critters can carry quite a few diseases - Deet works. Don't leave home without it.

I use it as well, and get funny looks with long pants long sleeve shirt....and yeah a head net.

Skeeters are bad, but the ones that really drive me nuts are the swarming little knats.....some where I just saw a bandana that comes with repellent on it gonna have to look that one up.

I went to the Gulf Coast Turfgrass Expo and Field Day at the University of Florida today. They call it "Gnatfest." For some reason I was not bothered at all by them, which is usually the case even for skeeter. Not sure why, guess I don't smell appetizing. They did however pester almost everyone. I remember soaking my DCU's in DEET before heading to the Sandbox. It was required.

I've always been one to use Deet. My son doesn't like to have it on him. A couple of years back we were hiking a similar area as you did today. A lot of flooded bottom land and the skeeters were horrendous. I had already put it on before we got into the swampy area. After about 5 minutes of swatting and slapping I was spraying him down. He doesn't grumble too much about it anymore.

I know the guys on the tv show Gold Rush Alaska use the Thermacell products, I checked them out at a local sports store, not cheap but if they work and I dont need to spray DEET on me or my kid.....

Thermacells work. If the wind ain't too great. I rely on bug tamers and DEET. I do use non deet around the shop.

Skeeters are attracted to carbon monoxide. Thermacells refills are expensive. But, you can refill both yourself. The mats and the butane.


Down here you don't rely on any single solution.

I'm a Deet user too. We don't have much of a problem with Mozzies, but Ticks, and Gnats that rival Exocet missiles are a problem. I like to live by prevention being better than cure whenever possible. This year has been particularly bad for Ticks.

This is why I turn in the hiking pole and grab the paddle when the bugs awaken; it's just not enjoyable to hike a woods while swatting the bugs.
Don't get me wrong. I grew up in the woods and I can take it if I must, but If I don't have to...
I'm surprised nobody mentioned chiggers? They are the bane of the early deer season around these parts.
When I need to use bug spray I use deet and non-deet.
Anyone ever use Permethrin for treating clothes?

When I worked outside and was wading weeds out to a pole or pedestal I've played host to chigger condominiums. Loathed those things. Next to the word pestilence in the dictionary is the picture of a chigger. When in the woods in the summer and fall I use Deet and haven't been bothered by them. For the gnats, a brimmed hat seems to keep most of them off my face. Not sure why that works but without a hat they are in my eyes. Put the hat on and they linger at the end of the brim. I'm looking for a hat with a 4 foot brim.

I also read this morning that they may have tied a meat allergy to the Lone Star tick. You folks on the east coast take note.

a reason I didn't buy one :) I remember years ago I used to work in a place that sold a waxy bar you could place in a room of the house and have no bugs, active ingredient was Dichlorvos if I remember correct, when I started thinking about how it must permeate the air within the house, how could it be good for the human residents? yuck.

Here is a video from Bushcraft Bartons where he does a good review of Watkins Great Outdoors Insect Repellent Lotion. He and his wife go out constantly into the southern Ontario woods, lakes, creeks, etc., and he really likes the effectiveness of Watkins lotion. Wards off mosquitoes, Black flies, etc.

Looking at 1stimestar's video I was thinking about the different mosquitoes we get. Some will welt you up. Some sting more than others.

When I am near work or near my parents house the Asian Tiger is the pest that is usually biting. Their bite itches a lot. But, it doesn't last as long as some other mosquitoes. The nastiest mosquito I know is the marsh mosquito. It bites and when it isn't buzzing it flies right outside your ear. Then when we have to camp in open uncut fields during certain quota hunts. We have to deal with Gallinippers. In Dupris WMA they make you camp in uncut fields that are loaded with these things. I have never seen them anywhere near these numbers. They also have every other mosquito. This is the largest biting mosquito in North America and is the only one that I have experienced biting me through my Bug Tamers.

I do like when the mosquitoes come out and the dragonflies snatch them from right in front of your face or off an ear. Some of the coolest acrobatics in nature. Like a mini airshow in camp!

Hey I've seen that as well out fishing on the lake.....
Another sight was swarms of the little knats.....was watching them in the setting sun off my porch....would fly around a sheeter, and I don't know if they were deflecting the air flow or what, but as they closed in..... the skeeter would drop straight down.....in this case about 6ft.....and they kept doing it?????

The mosquito flaps it wings between 300 and 600 flaps per SECOND. That is why they buzz. They are attracted by CO2 and are around your ear because the the co2 is coming out of your mouth and nose.

Some say that the male is looking for a mate which is why he is near your ear while the females are biting. But, all of the females who are seeking co2 to find an animal to blood feed have already been mated. That is why they are feeding. And while the male uses 600hz and the female uses 400hz. That allows them both to hear their suitor. But, as they become enamored with each other they synchronize.


Here are all the facts I need. The one which is buzzing me in the era is not stinging me. It is annoying me. The one stinging me is annoying me also. LOL

Those would be mountain mosquitoes. They hold a rendezvous several times a year at the Fairbanks Blood Bank where they get all the supplies they need. I understand that some of them are so big that if they bite a beaver they suck it completely dry and then bring the pelts to the rendezvous. There's a story I heard about one called Big Jim that actually brought in a polar bear carcass one year. Probably just folk lore though.

That's why they moved Fur Rondy to late February. It used to be in August but you couldn't get a parking place because of all the mountain mosquitoes.

Or I can continue to think for myself and realize that there are other repellents out there that don't negatively impact my well-being (DEET is not recommended for use for those who have auto-immune disorders, which I do) and provide support in wellness.

More than a possibility, a certainty. There are repellents I use that have served me well, (natural) that don't come with the baggage DEET and several others do. You told me to re-evaluate my approach to things when I had sufficient reason to have made my decision in the first place based on my own beliefs and understanding of my own health. I won't be more susceptible to what you stated above by ignoring the advice to use DEET. That is the point I was making.

I'll ad that my endorsement of DEET is based on my experiences, and as you so eloquently put it "thinking for myself". My decision to use the products I do have come from my research and my testing of several along with assessing the risks involved with each and consequently the risks of not using a particular product. It's good to see that you are making decisions based on what is best for you. Glad you are able to think for yourself.
