View Full Version : My home security journey...

Part 1.

Lately the topic of home security has been weighing heavily on my mind. Here's the story: About a month ago a coworker of mine was the victim of a home invasion. He was awakened around 3 or 4 a.m. to a commotion in the living room. Initially he thought it was his roommate coming in, but when he went to check up on him he was attacked by five guys. They've kicked in his door and were ransacking his apartment. He ended up getting beat up pretty good, but very fortunately he wasn't seriously injured.

Now, he's a younger kid that runs with a shady crowd, but it really got me thinking. To many people I talk to home security is a gun. While I'm into firearms I think that's a misplaced priority. How many people have a $1,000 gun tricked out with lights and lasers yet stick with a $20 Kwik-Set lock? I keep a gun near my bed, but I want the situation to ended with the bad guy outside my front door, not dead on the floor of my bedroom!

I realized that my knowledge of security was pretty basic; have a deadbolt, don't have your name on your mailbox, etc. So I decided to do a bit of reading, then conduct a survey of my house. What I found frankly shocked me. Basically I live in a tent! That is to say, it would be just as easy to keep someone out of my tent as my house.

First off, my front door has glass sidelights- not ideal. But as I looked at them with an eye towards covering them on the inside with plexiglass I noticed that the wall they screw into is very flimsy. Worse yet my front door is an interior door (!), secured to a single 2 x 4 frame (!!)! Absolutely mind boggling.

I wish that was the worst of it. The front entry used to be porch but apparently was walled in...or I should say "windowed in". The whole thing is windows. What used to be the front door is also an interior door! And to the left of it are three single paned windows large enough to easily step through.

Going around to the side door in the alley didn't make me feel any better. There's a single dead bolt on another interior door being used as an exterior door (!), and like the front door that deadbolt is a single cylinder 3" from a window! What were they smoking when they built the place? And what was I smoking when I moved in?

I got another shock when I peeled the trim off the inside of the door frame to plan how to reinforce it. It's difficult to describe what I laughingly call the "King stud"/door junction- the door jamb is a one-by mounted to plaster! Yes, PLASTER!

Needless to say, but this point I needed a drink! The further I look the scarier my house is. But at least now I know, and knowing will help me fix it. My mom & brother are both former professional carpenters (and I'm pretty handy having worked with them PT as a kid). I'm formulating a plan to get this house up to 21st Century standards.

Part 2:

Okay, I have a basic plan formulated. Please feel free to chime in with comments or suggestions.

Initially I'm going to sort of ignore that outside front door; to be done correctly I'll have to remove it along with the sidelights, then install proper king studs and a new door. This is something I will do, but it will cost to much and take longer than I can devote to it to start there. I will make my stand at what I call the "airlock door". I'll get rid of that door and replace it with a proper solid core exterior door, mounted on three new hinges. Oh, did I forget to mention all the doors are mounted on 2 hinges each, and each hinge is missing at least one screw each? Yowzas!

At this point I plan to install jamb armor, and extended and hardened strike plate, armor for the hinges and a wrap-around door reinforcer. At this point I'll finally be ready to look at locks. That's another area where I was woefully ill-informed. Let me share a few things I've learned in a months worth of research. Perhaps this is common knowledge to you folks; if not it might keep your house from being penetrated. First off, while your door is anchored into one of the strongest structural components of your house, the door frame (generally a king stud with either 2 or three two-by-fours or two-by-sixes) the strike plate that contains your deadbolt is mounted to a door jamb with 1" screws. The jamb itself is pretty flimsy- one good kick will generally rip the bolt free of it. You should have a larger strike plate anchored with at least 3.5" screws that can go thru the jamb and deep into the stud frame. The large strike plate can spread the shock of an impact evenly, dissipating the energy into the whole door frame, absorbing the blow.

Once you've kept the jamb from ripping out, the door itself will probably fail around the lock. A door 1.75" thick with a hole drilled for the lock set will have very little material left to either side. To strengthen it you must add a wrap-around door reinforcer. If you're able it's also a good idea to armour the door hinges as well. If you've done all this you should have a pretty sturdy door. Then you can look at locks.

If you haven't followed the news or internet, you may not realize just how vulnerable your average lock is. The $40 lock you trust your security to is fatally flawed in many ways. It can be defeated by a number of attacks. The primary ones I'll discuss here are bumping and physical attack. Bumping involved inserting a key that will not unlock your door but will physically fit in it. The key is then smacked (bumped). On nearly all common locks, if done by a practiced had the lock will open. If you're not planning to sleep tonite anyways, go to youtube and search "lock bumping." Not pretty.

As I said, nearly all locks under $75 can be bumped. And to be perfectly honest, even a $140 Medeco M3, the type used in the White House among other places, is not completely invulnerable to being bumped. The great simplified answer is that Security Rated, Class 1 locks will resist the amateur bump attacks you'll likely face. These locks have "firewalls" of sorts that (theoretically) compartmentalize & isolate the parts of the lock from each other. In broad terms, locks that are nearly bump proof include said Medeco M3, the Schlage Primus/Everest, the Evva 3KS, etc. These locks will cost around $150 at the end. But while that sucks, how much did that slick Kimber .45 cost? Or your 65" LCD TV? What's your life worth?

If the bad guy can't simply bump your lock and walk in he may physically attack the lock. This can be done in many ways. Cheap deadbolts can simply be hammered off with a couple of blows. If it survives that it might be drilled. Years ago this wasn't a very common attack, but now everyone owns a cordless drill. Security tests have shown that nearly all consumer locks under $50 can be drilled out & defeated in under 2 minutes. What will survive that? Tests have shown the Medeco M3, the Evva & the Primus to resist drill attacks. The lock can be destroyed in this manner but it won't open. The Schlage is also extremely robust vs physical attack.

My eventual plan is to use 2 deadbolts on each the front and back doors. One will be a Schlage B660P (already ordered) coupled with a high security locks. Maybe the Medeco, maybe the Primus. Maybe I won't come right out and say which! The idea is 2 different locks means two different keys, and two different bump keys. High security locks have rather exotically shaped keys, and key control means you can't stroll into the hardware shop and get a blank. Two beadbolts means twice the holding power and 1/2 as likely to be defeated. Maybe not worth the effort. Naturally I'll have a reinforced strike plate for each lock.

In the next post I'll discuss my plans for the three vulnerable windows that flank that airlock door. And in a later post I'll lay out my plans for tackling that problematic alley/back door.

Well, living where I do, No guns allowed. I have taken a different approach to home invasion. I have good locks, and the windows lock. I have a motion sensor in the conservatory where the entrance door is. I have made it as secure as is reasonably possible. I have top notch home insurance and I will allow the invaders in, hide like the girl I am and claim on said insurance should the worst happen. Nothing I own is worth my life. I may have a different outlook if I lived over yonder.

Hey Winnie, I hear that England has the second largerst market in the world for baseball bats. And they do not play baseball there!

Phaedrus, what can I say,

You're screwed!

Give an intruder long enough and he will overcome any system. In my general area home invaders still have it fairly easy. The general concensis is that "It always happens to the other guy." and most victims of HI situations simply have not locked their doors. That is probably the situation you young friend faced.

Kicking in doors, even cheap doors, is not often done, but is possible as we all know. Although one of my cop friends spent the better part of a drug bust firefight trying to get his foot seperated from the hollow core door he had just attempted to kick in.

Rather than buy a boat load of expensive locks to put on a place you do not own I would go the simpler route. This is where Mythbusters comes in. Several seasons ago they did a door busting show. Kicking locks and jams was no big problem, then they got to the little $2.99 chain locks. Even Jamie's 250 pound mass could not take those simple cheap chain locks off the door with repeated attempts because the kids had installed them with 3" drywall screws.

I now use the chain locks top and bottom of each entry door on BOTH SIDES, lock and hinge.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q553/DonaldStancliff/001-9.jpg

If I am in doubt about the strength of an exterior door I will sheath it in plywood in a heartbeat.

http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q553/DonaldStancliff/003-3.jpg

That also shows the simple and unobtrusive addition of a bar on the door. Please excuse the unfinished conditions, this is the new hole I just cut in the back wall to access the new porch.

Glass is always a weak point, so consider simple wire fence, cut to size and secured over the inside of the opening. I have found this great for ground level windows, less expensive than bars and less visible. It will not be visible from the street but as soon as the intended intruder sees it he knows you have placed another level of difficulty in his path. You are slowing him down long enough to have more reaction time.

Radio Shack and many other places now sell simple and portable door alarms. They are convinient and LOUD! Just one more alert mechinism to give you reaction time or possibly help the intruder decide to be somewhere else.

There is only so much one can do if the structure itself is flimsey. I would say retreat to the layer you can secure. Give them the foyer and secure the second door. If you can not secure the second door secure the sleeping areas.

One can even sometimes place furnature inside the home so that no one can get a running start at a secured door, or get enough leverage to kick the door.

An additional benefit of the layered approach is that you do not have as much to worry as much legally if you have retreated to the interior of the house. No matter what the law reads, there will be questions to answer and it will be much more obvious even to the most liberal COP/DA situation if you retreated as far as possible before using deadly force after an intruder smashed through 2 or 3 flimsey locks and doors.

You need to start your security test well before the bad guy gets to your door. You need to stand on the street and survey your house. Your objective is to make your home less attractive than your neighbors. It's sad, but that's the truth. The bad guy doesn't want to spend a lot of time and make a lot of noise getting in your house if they can go next door and quickly and quietly slip in. What can you see from outside? If you can see that LCD TV or your computer so can the bad guy. Your security starts outside.

Good comments, all! Yeah, I did start my survey by walking around the house at various times of the day and night. I'm trying to present this as a step by step narrative that explains how I'm going about things, but I have of course implemented a few "emergency fixes" that I've not yet detailed. For example I have installed heavy mesh screen on some windows and sheathed some vulnerable doors with baltic birch plywood. While I don't want to spend a fortune on a rental house I have lived here for almost 12 years, and I have no immediate plans to move. The neighborhood is pretty good (obviously- I haven't been robbed yet despite virtually no viable security efforts save having a dog in the house during some of those years).

I'm not terribly worried by the notion of very sophisticated burglers. Anyone with the advanced gear required to "Mission Impossible" into my house thru security locks and holes cut in the ceiling will find a very poor return on their investment robbing my humble abode! I have a few expensive hobbies but expensive doesn't really equate to valuable. For instance, I have one Japanese ryoba (a kitchen knife) that costs over $800 but I defy anyone who's not a chef to pick it out from any number of relatively cheap ones. My main concern is opportunity attacks by drunks and drug users, someone who happens by my house in just the wrong frame of mind at just the wrong time.

I doubt there are any security measures that can keep someone out indefinitely, and it's even more unlikely to do so while you're not in the home.

BTW, I think that for an occupied building the best "lock" probably goes back to ancient times: barring the door. I will do some research into the best way to do so. Your bar should work very well, Kyratshooter, assuming you secured it to the jamb with 3" or larger screws.

3M makes a very good window material that makes it extremely difficult to break in. When I amateur my computer tonight I will post link. Cost is small and it is see- thru so not detracting from the views. Their video of a guy with a bat trying to break in is great.

My house in Tenessee was very secure. It was isolated and in an area where meth labs and the scum they attracted were prevelent. In that location the bars were 2x4 oak and I had plank shutters on each window, just like the pioneer days. I also had a 3/8 sheet of steel half way up each wall in the bedroom due to several drive by meth lab shootings. I was not real sure those people even knew which house to shoot at.

I once locked myself out of the house and it took 2 hours to overcome the simple measures like double deadbolts and barred back door. I finally had to cut a hole throught the 2" thick white oak plank back door with a chain saw. One of my buddies always claimed the easiest way to get into that place would be through the floor.

My present house is a cracker box compared to that one. My main purpose is to slow them down and hurt them. I want them to feel some pain when they slam their shoulder into that door and it does not spring or give a fraction of an inch. I want them to think about getting cut up buy the broken glass and fence wire if they try a window.

I want them to look at the situation and say, "Forget this it ain't worth it!"

I also have three vehicles and one of them stays parked somewhere else. I rotate one vehicle out each week or two so no one can tell if I am home or gone or running a used car lot. When I was reenactment camping every weekend I would keep two of the cars loaded and tent poles on top and still used them as daily drivers. No one had any idea if I was leaving for the weekend or just going to the grocery.

I also worked in the detention system for over a decade and got well aquanted with the criminal thought process. It helps a lot when you can case a place while thinking like a burgler.

Keep in mind that most smash and grab theves are not after hight quality kitchen ware. They are after electronics, guns and jewelry. Anything that takes two people to pick up is generally safe and they do not want to stay inside too long.

Teens will be on foot, they will take change, cash and piddley stuff and clean out the fridge. Adults will have a vehicle and will be after the high pawn value goods. I once had one "client" that specialized in lawn mowers. He seldom entered a house and took his loot from outdoor storage buildings, which were usually not even locked. He peddled his goods at lawn mower shops, pawn shops and to flea market vendors. He had never had a single mower traced back to him and only got caught because he took a very distinctive mower and got caught pushing it down the road.

Just a couple of comments....on out buildings.
Garage has a older Bearcat Scanner on work bench, and as the on-board battery (the one to save settings) has a corroded battery holder, I leave it on all the time....
Nothing breaks a dark silence like a tone out, or squad car talk.....

Also motion lights are mounted around the yard, covering most all areas....as well as motion light inside the garage........So far so good.

I do agree that the most houses that are stick built walls can be breached with a sawzall or even a fist it you pick a spot between the studs.

about the best you can hope for is to be a PITA to get into, and cause bad guys to delayed....if they really want to get in ...they will.

That said, just being smart about it, as has been brought up, will go a long way in slowing them down.

All good stuff guys.

Another thing that can help is landscaping. Put rose bushes with the inch long thorns under your windows. This will keep them at bay from just getting a view. I have a long side walk to my front door, so I put a motion senser that rings like a door bell. I know someone is headed up the walk about 10 seconds before they reach the door. 10 seconds can be alot of time to make a difference. (Plus it is fun to open the door before they knock. It scares the pooh outta the FedEx guy too!)

As Rick said, make the neighbors house seem better. When it takes a person a half hour to break in, while making the noise of a circus, to only get $100 worth of known goods, they will pass. Your neighbor who has an interior door for an exterior and $2000 worth of goods visible will be the one to get hit instead!

Yep, it is very easy to get into 99% of homes. Granted, most burglars aren't the sharpest tool in the shed, it is still easy for them to get in. One with half a brain will clean out your house without much trouble. Assuming nobody is home, your stuff can easily be theirs.
I've learned most of this from being in construction and recognizing the weak points in most homes.

There are some measures you can take though to improve the safety of your home.
Front door. Yeah, most people aren't gonna kick it in, but it still helps to make sure your deadbolt latches into something secure. Most store bought doors only have a 3/4 piece of wood that it latches into. Relatively easy to break. It should latch into more secure/heavy duty wood (even the jack stud) for added security. A metal plate on the jamb helps as well, which some doors do come with. The handle of the door is pretty much useless for security. The chains are very good too, as long as they are secured into solid wood with good screws. Support bars behind the doors are great as well, and they come in various forms.
Now, for added safety as well, you can invest in solid bedroom doors. If you live in an area where safety is concerned, a solid door with a bar or chain will give you some added time either escape or prepare for whatever you intend to do. Same principles apply to exterior doors. If you're really paranoid make your own bedroom door with a steel core... lol

Windows are always the weak spot. Unless you plan on investing in some crazy glass/plexi, a hammer takes care of windows. Pry bars can also pop most commercial standard window latches. Best bet is sensors that will trigger if the window is opened or shattered. If it wakes you up, you know what's happening. If it's audible to the intruder it can also deter them from coming in.
Doors and windows are how most people will get in...

Really your best bet at avoiding a break in is making your home appear less appealing than your neighbor's as said. Security system signs, well lit, etc, etc...
For someone who really wants in though and knows what they are doing, you really can't keep them out. There are practical ways around most security systems.

and be aware of bump keys... Most standard locks (kwikset, etc) are very susceptible to a bump key, especially since the manufacturer's name is usually on the product.

LowKey

It always amazes me at the number of doors that open out, putting the hinges on the outside. Maybe not the front door but check the back and side doors. Your bedroom door too if you are securing that.

I'm sorta of the opinion that a well-lit security sign is a signal I got something valuable enough to secure...
My house looks less opulent than most of the neighbors. Not too ratty, just poorer-looking.

Cellar windows IMO are made too flimsy and they are man-sized. Anything I do to those though, I want to be able to get out from the inside. They are the likely exit if a hurricane or tornado strikes and the bulkhead doesn't open.

Speaking of bulkheads, a surprising number of those will open with just a yank. The locking mechanism on those is just a 1/4" steal rod and hook. I have a bolt through mine that can be chained from the inside to a sunken eyebolt in the floor.

If you are looking for something shatterproof instead of glass, consider polycarbonate instead of plexiglass/acrylic. Plexiglass/acrylic will crack if hit with a hammer. Polycarb won't. You can get polycarb most places that sell acrylic, or maybe can special order it. It scratches easier than glass and will degrade eventually from UV exposure just like plexiglass.

I'd just go with.....

REDNECK HOME SECURITY SYSTEM:
1. Buy a pair of size 14-16 work boots.
2. Put them on front porch with a copy of Guns & Ammo.
3. Put some giant dog dishes next to boots & magazines.
4. Leave note on your door: "Bubba: Me & Bertha went for more ammo & beer. Back soon. Don't mess with the pit bulls; they messed the mailman up bad this morning. I don't think Killer took part; hard to tell from all the blood. I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside.Be right back.~Cooter

That might be as good as any approach Crash.

One thing I have noted since I moved up north. Folks from the cities up here seem to think anything bigger than 1/2 acre is a public park and that windows are made to look into, not out of. They will cruise along till they see a house that interests them, stop and walk up to the window and look rigth in! I caught a couple of young ladies scoping out the neighbor's house peering through the front windows from the outside. Checking to see if it was for rent, they said. That kind of thing happens when there is not car in the drive and no dog in the yard. I warned them that they were subject to being shot by a scared homeowner and they went zombie eyed.

"You're kidding!"
"Nope ladies, you are in Kentucky now and outside the Cinncinatti city limits. We don't look in windows around here."

1. Dogs, more so than any other deterrent. There have been interviews with guys in prison where they say even a barking mini dog causes them to choose another place. A big dog, esp well trained, well put yourself in the invaders place.

2. Those motion detectors that turn on lights can also be wired to sound a door bell in the house if that is of any interest. Way to know someone is out at my gate about half a mile from the house.

3. No trespassing / beware of dog signs can help.

4. A chair against the door will help wedge it. The best ones I have seen are a piece of pipe set into the floor that the owner droped a length of smaller diameter pipe into that wedged the door shut. Remember that most door frames are teh weak / spring open point.

5. Windows, you would not believe how many people buy "decorative window grillwork" (bars in fancy form) from my son, custom made. Some of those mcmansion stuff run 3 or 4 hundred per window. good money and free biz idea for any who want to join in.

6. Sooner or later if you are there you have to consider how to handle a succusful invasion. "safe rooms" are part of it, as are known cover and control of the interior exterior lighting. The bottom line at that point is a dog and a gun (bat, knife etc.)

Remember when seconds count the police are only minutes away. 911 dial a prayer is seldom an answer. Perhaps a autodialer that will dial it when you trigger it while you take other steps, but have to consider this may have negative as well as positive.

Bug out options: Sometimes, seldom but sometimes, the only viable option is to attempt to retreat from your place. Plans to do this should be made, but bug out is very vulnerable.

For my brothers across the pond, You have my sympathy. I hope that each of you is able to come up with some solution to your reduction to serf status. "only the kings men may go armed" /sigh. (Wasn't there something called the magna carta at some point in history about such things?)

Gravity is a law. true laws cannot be broken. The rest are of course just policy scribbled by someone who would be king on a piece of parchment. JMTC< YMMV

Thad - Sorry but dogs are not a deterrent. They are an alert system and nothing more. There have been a lot of studies that show a determined thief will get around all but trained security dogs. In his study, The Efficacy of Home Security Measures, Dr. Timothy O'Shea found that owning a dog had little impact on a burglar's decision to enter a home. A finding further supported by earlier research (Buck, Hakim, & Rengert, 1993). They will alert you to someone's presence but won't stop someone from entering.

I've posted on here several times that I carried dog treats in the truck and when met by a "vicious" dog on someone's property I'd open the window and toss them a treat. It's amazing how quickly you become their best friend.

As an aside but certainly not authoritative, there was a show on a couple of years ago called It Takes a Thief where the show went through a home with a family then while they were away a former thief would break in to show them how easy it was and what their vulnerabilities were. In one show a family put a lot of stock in the protection of their dog, which the thief promptly took with him along with the rest of their valuables. Pretty funny.

You can purchase security system stickers over the internet whether you have a system in place or not. Gives the thief one more thing to think about over your neighbors house.

A study conducted by Simon Hakim, Ph.D. in 1991 concluded that homes without security systems are roughly 3 times more likely to be broken into than homes with security systems. Losses due to burglary average $400 less in residences with security systems than for a residence without security systems. He also found that in homes with security systems that were burglarized, the system was not turned on 41% of the time.

I know this was true 20 years ago, but things are very different now. Back then alarm systems were very expensive and therefore uncommon. As they were uncommon they garnered a quick response from the police. Somewhere maybe ten years ago the security firms realized that the hardware was chump change; the real money was to be made from the monitoring. Soon after companies began to self-finance buyers, making the hardware nearly free. Since then there's been a boom in alarms with tens of millions installed. The problem is that in North America fully 98% of all alarms are false alarms, and the law has responded. In many places the police no longer respond to alarms, and if they do they're very low priority since the alarm is 1) probably false and 2) they know they'll get there to write a report, not bust a thief since he'll have been long gone when they arrive.

If you get an alarm it should probably be to notify you of an invasion, not the police.

I won't dispute your numbers. I will tell you that my next door neighbor's alarm had at least a dozen false alarms when they upgraded. Our PD responded to each one and in a timely fashion. So I guess it would depends on where you live.

Yeah, it depends on each municipality. In some areas the law requires the alarm company to contact the owner before they're allowed to call the police. That's not attempt to contact but actually contact.

When we bought our new house it was rigged up with ADT. So we use it for break ins and fire. We also have a dog, lots of guns and motion lights outside on all four corners. I feel pretty darn safe even though my front door has a window in it with a cheap lock and my back door is glass french doors.

Rick, You may be right.

My prime security rides on my belt in a holster. My dog is my best early warning system, and would at least grab the attention of anyone coming in the door for the few seconds necessary for myself or one of the children to solve the problem . (I do pray often that I never have to deal with that however.)

Because of the animals, we have a shotgun hung above the doors to the outside with a bandoleer of ammo. Cannot count how many times I have to go out at night to the hen house / barns.

Last count there were 11 coyote hides tacked to the barn drying and waiting on me to decide what to do with them. (we have at least two packs and they just seem to grow larger the more I thin em out.) Oldest son and middle son have taken to playing with his new night vision scope from the top of the small barn. Says he can ID and hit em out well over 100 yards. I may have more pelts drying than I thought since I haven't looked for a few days and he just skins em out and hangs em.

Then again, if someone climbs the fence and walks the half mile to the house, they will cause the heinze 57 outside mutts to come looking, and they will bark till someone shuts em up , or one of us calls em in. Again early warning system, backed up by humans.

Once the heinze's (Ok so I don't give working animals much of a name just heinze one; two and three, usually shortened to just 1 2 or 3) start in; mary lu my old hunting buddy that thinks she is human will come and get me to come check, and won't take no for an answer. She is good to stay at heal and will follow most commands including hold and out.

So I guess I will have to buy into it, but I still say that dogs are a very important part of any home security system.

As for alarms, on a good night the deputy is maybe half an hour away. All they would be in time for would be to take down the history of what happened, cause trouble for me and mine, or call the morgue or tote the hog tied problem to jail.

Then again what fool would want to rob a run down old homestead with nothing much worth taking in the first place?

I don't discount animals as part of the security plan. I just think folks over rate what those dogs are going to do if someone knows what they are doing and how to handle them. Of course, if the animal is trained then all bets are off. I once came face to face with a "retired" military K-9 about 10:00 one night on a call out. But for the grace of God and his handler the dog didn't kill me. Folks will take off and leave things unprotected and their dog running around because he wouldn't let anyone one the property. They often get a nasty surprise when the come home and find stuff gone.

I had a friend that drove a trunk and made runs into Mexico. He had a Rottweiler in the truck with him to protect him and the stuff inside the truck. While he was unloading someone took his valuables out of the truck and the dog. He didn't even hear it bark. Even our little furry roast will raise holy heck if someone is outside. Of course she'd lick you to death if you made it inside.

A garage door with the electric operator is very easy to get into, you push in at the top of the door at the exact middle area, then you can run a straightened out coat hanger in through the crack and hook the emergency release rope that has a handle on it. Once you hook the handle a quick tug releses the ratchet on the emergency release and the door can be lifted. It doesn't even damage the door!
Put a peice of sheet metal at the top of the door so the release cord cannot be hooked by the wire!

I don't have an attached garage so there's one thing I don't have to worry about!

"Pssst. George. commere. I broke into the garage."
"Yeah?"
"We can get into the house from the garage."
"House here. Garage over there. They aren't attached."
"That's why you're the leader, George. You're so smart."
"Oi."

My neighbor is a State Trooper. Nothing makes a burgler more nervous than one of these within eyesight.

A closed circuit video system scares the crap out of most burglars or home invaders. If you cant afford a real video surveillance system, fake cameras are pretty cheap, and they work!

Wait, wait, wait. If they're fake how can they work? Thought you were gonna sneak that past us didn't you?

There are a few videos on youtube that show how to make your garage door less susceptible to this approach.

They work because the crooks think they are real. Most of the fake cameras have a small red LED on them and the battery lasts approximately 1 year, and they look very realistic.

Rick you could hang one of your hong pics up on the front porch, and that would deter theives:smartass: You may want to go into home security using those pictures for a deterant!
