AR-15 Question..........????

Is there any component in an AR-15 that would be damaged from being submerged for 15 years in a tank of SAE-30W motor oil, Oil is virgin, I have about 60 gallons, and several 120MM ammo cans.

I don't know the answer to your question but suspend it above the bottom so if water (condensation) enters the tank it won't sink to the bottom and the weapon lay in it.

Optics? Plastic trigger guard, perhaps something in the gas system? The buffers are some sort of nylon but I don't know if that might react with the oil after all that time.

But seriously why would you do that? Isn't more fun to shoot them? Are you planning on going canoeing in 30weight oil? Don't let Rick's canoeing experience deter you from canoeing over water.

Many years ago a dear old friend immersed in a barrel of oil a Browning A-5, a Colt SAA, and a Springfield '06 rifle. All were stripped of the wood, of course. He passed away 10 or 11 years later and his wife told us about his guns.
When they were recovered from the oil barrel out in his garage, they were a mass of rust, and were ruined....

Crash, I find that information to be 100% bogus. We don't know what shape they were in at the time they were immersed. I have to believe that if I fill the container to the top with motor oil, and there is NO air inside, I see no way that they can rust. I have 5 H&R rifles/shotguns in the tank now.

I tend to agree, I'm thinking there is more to that story....guns rusty to start with, ..oil contaminated with acids/salts, something thing is wrong with that statement.

this don't apply to firearms but back in 1999 I forged some hooks from mild steel. In the meantime we built a new house and moved. I had thrown the hooks in a oil pan of used motor oil, several years went by and I moved the smithy to the new place. Anyhoo those hooks were in fine shape when I fished them out of the oil years later.

My guess is they were trash when they went into the oil bath.

The plastic on the rear end of the buffer is just a recoil dampener. In WTSHTF situation- not a huge deal if the oil ate it over long term. A soft pine plug could be dropped in the buffer tube and call it good.

I'd prolly pull the polymer furniture. And call it good for a long dunk.

However I feel it gross overkill on an AR. The Upper and lower receivers are Aluminum, as is the buffer tube and (stock GI) trigger guard. The aforementioned furniture is plastic. The piston rings on the bolt are stainless, as is the gas tube and firing pin.

The bolt, carrier, cam pin, and sights are heavily parkerized which hold oil well and holds cosmoline GREAT. If it's a GI issue (type) Barrel the bore is chrome lined.....

Remember this weapon system was the first "impervious" weapon system the US issued, regarding the elements from the jungle rain forest to the arctic.
I'd just go the cosmoline route AT THE MOST.

There are additives in the oil and I have no idea what would happen to them over a 15 year period. In addition, you would need to check to ensure the oil used does not contain paraffin.

The problem with cosmoline is getting it off with-out hot water or solvent. More so at below freezing temp.

Heating the field stripped weapon in a warm shelter, quite warm being better, wiping off the stripped components and pushing a few patches through the bore is sufficient. If you have a good gun oil, it VERY likely will have a detergent in it which will work to further thin out the cosmo. Even laking detergent, it's an easy process even in less than desirable conditions.

I've done three in excellent conditions and it was a pain in the touche. I didn't think I'd ever get them clean. And just when you think you're finished you find two more components that still have it on them.

So long as the bore is clear the other parts "can have it on them." Fire away... Fun way to clean/clear the Cosmo.

Edit: is for some reason a dope were to cosmoline the STAINLESS STEEL gas tube of an AR-15 or M-16 and not clear it before firing it would likely burst the tube upon firing, turning the weapon into a "pull-back, spring assist" single shot weapon form there on out.

No problem, the buffer comes right out, I'll just keep the buffer with the plastic buttstock.

You are about my age I suppose, If I buried a $1,000 rifle today and dug it up in 15 years I would be a 77 year old geezer with a black rifle rolling around on my mobility chair. Are you burrying a scabard for the handlebars to go with the rifle?

And at 77 are you really going to be worrying about cleaning the cosmoline out of a rifle while living in a sub-zero tent in the woods?

And are you really going to remember where you put that stock and buffer 15 years ago.

Or are you even going to remember what they are when someone shows you the box you hid them in?

Or where you burried the rifles?

Sorta wondering the same thing.....but was kinda watching this as a "what if"?...or "I wonder what would happen if....?"....in general for the good of all.

I guessing there aren't a whole lot of people that can afford or would want to.... or their wife would let them..... buy a $1000 rifle....let alone bury it.

Personally I would not bury anything, as digging is kinda a PITA....unless I use the tractor......I have a bad enough time getting out of the canoe with out dropping it.

You would be better off putting the oiled rifle in a vacuum sealer bag with of O2 absorbers and vacuum sealing it like you would food then making a pvc tube cache and sealing it in that.

There really isn't much to rust on an AR. I would just warm up the ammo can then stick rifle in and close it. I dont know about being submerged for 15 years but I have been using Mobil1 as lube for years and have not noticed any deterioration due to the oil.

I'm inclined to go the vacuum direction Wingman mentioned.

No real life experience with the following, but I bought a length of heavy duty 8" PVC tubing around 20 years ago, along with end caps and sealant, and 4 high quality ball valves. I've cut the tubing into shorter sections for ease of storage. As I used to be a mechanic, I have a vacuum pump I used during AC repairs.

My thoughts were if times got goofy, I could stash things in these vacuumed tubes for long term storage. I would fill them with goodies, vacuum down through the ball valves, and double seal with silicone sealer. As the vacuum pump can pull down to 28-30" of vacuum, there would be no moisture left inside. If buried with the one end facing the dirt surface, there would be minimal "footprint" to show.

I know the science involved is valid, but I don't know if the tubes would collapse when vacuumed down.:w00t: As I'm getting older almost everyday, my need for long term storage doesn't seem that important now.

If I ever did this, the ends would be glued on. No reason for a schrader valve, as it would create another possibility for the vacuum to sneak off. That's the reason for doubling everything up with the silicone.

If I wanted to access the candy bars inside, I'd have to saw the tube open with a hacksaw.

Well the project is under assembly. I have 5 gal. of oil in now and I'll wait a few days for it to work it's way into the small areas, then add more oil.

I can tell you they along with ammo are built into the mud walls all over Afghanistan. They are in every crack and hole in the mountains and they pull them out and trust me they shoot just fine. AK's don't need to be placed in oil to survive.
