My Journal - Starting from scratch...

For some time now I have been contemplating (and preparing for) wilderness living as an alternative. It actually started in January of 2008. After losing my wife to a 12 year illness; losing the only job I've known since my time in the military to government austerity programs; then losing all the material stuff to the financial woes that came in waves after these. Heh! That's the end to the "why" of it. One door shuts another one opens. I took an early pension and moved on with this mantra: "The aim of life is to be free. Free of what? Just to be free, that's all."
I was always solitary by nature. Just raised that way. Being alone in the woods was the way I coped with the need of it. I don't dislike people at all. I just enjoy my time alone. So I moved to Nova Scotia and spent the first couple years just looking around here and there with the idea that if things ever became tight enough, I would know where I could go. It took some time to survey the options. A lot of woods here. In 2010 I found a place that had most (if not all) the basic requirements. I moved to the vicinity in order to do a more careful recce.
This place has miles of forest, hills and river. A small town nearby for supplies. Nearly every day I have used my time to keep an eye on the place; fall, winter, spring and summer. I watched the comings and goings of others who move through the area; snowmobilers, ATV'ers, party-ers.
Next I will begin the process of selecting a series of sites to set up a string of camps: one for sleeping, one for cooking and cleaning near the river and another as a separate cache for some long-term supplies.
I'll keep you informed, taking pictures where I can and using videos people have posted on YouTube to share some stuff I will try.

First I just want to say....Good on you......You met what came, dealt with it and moved on.
Moving to an area to do a recon is good counsel.

It will be good to hear from them thats doin".......will be looking forward to you comments and experiances.

It would be valuable info for the many that are "fixin'" on it....Land, food, wate, shelter....the how's and why's, the rules....and just a daily routine.

Thank you for your question.
It is government land. Most of it was leased by a logging company, the best of it cut to the quick and abandoned. Large parts were inaccessible or otherwise unprofitable at the time, so some old growth remains in the valleys, by the river. The rest is in various stages of re-growth. The old logging roads remain but no one uses them except the odd atv or snowmobile. You can walk for hours and hours never seeing anyone. I can count on one hand the number of people I've seen around here in the past couple years.

Well, certainly I am old enough to be retired but (for better or worse) on the inside I am the same curious 9 year old kid that once climbed out a bedroom window in Phoenix, Arizona to bicycle out to Camelback Mountain, just to see if I could spend the night alone in the desert.
No, I won't need to work. At least not outside of the survival aspects.
Is it a permanent solution? Hard to say. I have thought about this a lot. I've done a lot of preparation and need to do more. Frankly, I don't think that will ever end. I think if someone really commits in their mind to do this, it needs dedication to life-long learning in order to carry it out. At this point I am kind of excited about it. My experience and practice informs me, though, that everything is impermanent; subject to change. At this moment I have the causes, conditions, and confidence to give it my best shot. But you know, best laid plans and all that...

Still, I gotta' tell you I love this place, especially down along the river:

I was out taking pictures of the area today. Funny, no matter how many times I walk it, there's always something a little bit new. The land part is easy and I'll be going into town for supplies.
Twice in the last four years I've stayed off the grid for three months at a time; getting used to no power, chopping wood and carrying water, staying warm, dry, and safe. Also preparing myself for an efficient and workable diet. Everything I've eaten (outside of the very occasional treat) was eaten as it came or prepared with boiling water.
As for shelter, it will be pretty spartan to begin. Like I said, much of this area was clear-cut and left to nature's own devices. So (for instance) there is every kind length and girth of sapling you can imagine! It reminded me that the First Nation people around here, the Mi'kmaq (Mig-mah) created lodges out of pole frameworks (tied together with strips of leather or even string) which can be covered a dozen ways. I'm thinking my first sleeping accommodations will be constructed of a sapling framework and covered with tarps or similar. To keep it simple and warm, I might build something the size of a small sweat lodge (8 ft. diameter, 4 ft height). Like a small yurt. Perhaps if I prepare the sleeping site as a complete sweat lodge lay-out (ie outside fire for heating rocks), it will come in handy come January.
Here's a couple questions: Are you familiar with a Dakota oven/stove? The one where the fire is in the ground. I wonder, do you think I could put a Dakota stove inside my sweat lodge construction?

There are a couple of ways to adjust your pics.

1. You can get a photobucket.com account. It is free and you can store your photos there instead of on you PC. They also have software to resize your photos. I've found 640 x 480 to be a good size providing detail and yet small enough to fit well in a post.

2. You can download paint.net. It's also free, a rather small program and allows you to do a lot to your pics including resize them.

The forum upgrade included a picture resizer but I do not know what the limits are that it will work with. Perhaps Crash or Sarge does.

I'm enjoying your write up. I'm sorry you faced some awful things to deal with but, like you, I've always believed that one door opens when another closes. We just have to be looking for it.

I've also found the people of Nova Scotia to be extremely friendly and just good all around folks.

Yes. They are extremely efficient for cooking, and rather well suited for clandestine maneuvers that require a fire.

They are miserable for heat, and don't bank. You can warm your hands on them, you can dry some clothing above them with a tripod. You can get them to keep a fire a little better by standing wood vertical in them, but it still burns fast. I can't imagine a long January night next to one in Nova Scotia, or WV for that matter. I have even tried to dampen one by using a large rock to close/control the air inlet. You can slow the fire down some, but you get much less heat and it still will not keep beyond an hour or so.

Short term I can see that. I have a hunting buddy that regularly uses sterno in that fashion, scares me honestly. There is a name coined for that using a candle, I think? As you mentioned, that has to be uncomfortable. But, I'm sure the shivers could change my mind.

My thought/response was using one to heat a shelter, such as a sweat lodge. Fast fire, fall asleep, wake up cold in 1-2 hours, build/stoke fire, repeat, repeat, repeat. Move farther South the next day, repeat, repeat, repeat...............

I have to agree that a Dakota fire pit would not be the ideal heat source for a yurt. For a longer term stay, I thing either building or investing in a wood burning "tent" stove would be the way to go.

A man I use to work with 15 years ago, quit and move to Nova Scotia as his in laws had 400 acres that he was going to work (not sure what or how). Spent yesterday cutting poles at the site, in the rain. Got soaked but at least the bugs didn't eat me alive while I worked.
I think I'm going to start on my kitchen site first. I found a spot by the river. I can see it was once a small island with a water runway on the inside that looks like a cobble-stone road now.

This will be like a base camp from which I will eat and work on my construction of the other separated sites I'm planning to have. It's about a klick from the ridge above the river valley where I will make my sleeping arrangements.
I took a picture of a cluster of 4 trees here while toying with the idea of building a closed in area (with horizontal poles) at their base with a platform above. Could be a storage for a job box and other stuff.
