A while back CNBC did a stock market 1929 crash documentary , I recorded it and drag it out about once a year and watch it . When I was a little jam face I remember sitting around the kitchen table when the relatives would get together and talk about the Great Depression . Those images left a lasting impression on me that are still with me to this very day .
Over the last 10 or 15 years as things progressed in our economy , I could see all the stars in the sky lining up for another Great Depression . And here we are on the eve of another . It appears that Harry S Dent and all the other famous demographers , who predicted the 2009 Great Depression were right on target . From what I see the sub-prime debacle is the vehicle that ushers us in to the next Great Depression .
We shall see.....thoughts?

BRAGG, They do not want to hear that kind of talk. If you don't talk about it then it just can't happen. I expect 1970's Stagflation times 3 on both factors, and in 5 years one or the other (Hyperinflation or Depression) will expose that the entire system is just an illusion. It is America's and the free worlds weakest point.

i have prepared for this for years just sold my second home this weekend 24 day closing and i am debt free with my stores ready for what comes.
as i have posted in a thread before paranoid or prepared only time will tell if i am wrong then no harm no foul if i am right well then

I started reading about this 2009 thing back in the mid 90's . It made so much sense to me that I did a lot of research on it . The more research I did , the more I was convinced , I came to the conclusion that not only was this possible , it was actually inevitable and there was really way out of it . The end result was , by say 1996 I was such a believer that I started planning accordingly .
I remember trying to warn family and friends as early as 1995 to 1996 what was coming . Needless to say , no one listened . Some close friends and family members actually thought I was suffering from depression . Now those same people are telling me how LUCKY I was to get out when I did . Every time I hear about how LUCKY I am , I think to myself about how after reading another dozen or so books , my LUCK would just get better and better . Amazing !

Sorry guys. I've been listening to folks preach gloom and doom all my life. Every event is the big one. No, wait...the next one. No, this one. There will always be someone on the corner with a sign proclaiming the end of the world as we know it. But I'm not going to sell everything I own and move to some place that appears safe (where ever would that be?). I watch market indicators every day. I watch my investments every day and I just don't see the same side of the tree you guys see. Sorry. It may happen some day but the house market is just another bump in the road, just like the energy crises of the 80's when everyone said that was the trigger for the next depression or the collapse of Enron et. al. or any of the other hundred or so threats.

i tend to lean in the direction that it will happen again someday never hurts to be prepared(hmm where have i heard that before) if it doesn't happen in my life time what have i lost? if it happens in my lifetime what have i gained? other than the fact i can say i told you so, but what dio i gain from that?
my beleif is that the terrorists will have seen what could happen when the great power outage happnend a few years ago i think they will try for that the towers were symbolic next will be practical, could you imagine more than a week w/o power. north americans are spoiled and soft and ill prepared.
ask your self if the power went out right now until the end of march what would you do, can't go to work it would cripple us financially mentally and just day to day operations would be crippled.
wait for it .......... here it comes........

I'm not a doom and gloomer, just a herald. Ive just never seen anything like what is happening right now economically since the Great Depression. Problem now being no one is even slightly prepared for what I believe is imminent. You can only throw so much borrowed money to temporarily bandaid a gusher.
My grandparents emigrated from Europe to Canada in 1926, just in time to catch the Depression and nearly starved to death.
In 1932, my grandmother had one of the very few jobs available at a glass factory. They lived on one side of the river, but the factory was 3 miles away on the other side. In March, the spring melting of the snow caused a flood which washed out the bridge, the only way to get to work. Until a bridge could be constructed a few weeks later, each day my grandmother had to strip down to her underwear, put her clothes on top of her head, wade chest deep across the icy river, and rush to a friend's house on the other side to get dry, warm up and get dressed to continue on to work. Sundays were spent walking the railroad tracks looking for pieces of coal that had fallen from the trains to minimize what they had to buy.
Times were tough.

RICK, I hope your 100% correct. But I fear you ain't. It is all built on trust the illusion. And if the "Baby Boomer's" panic and run for the door, well. There are to many SUV, CDO, CSO, BCP (Batcrap paper) and Total scam worthless paper out there. I just hope the CON works for 5 more years. If they keep selling America to the Sovereign Funds, maybe we milk a few more years. The problem that can not be fixed is that it is a Illusion, like National Security. The Banks know they are broke, and will not lend overnight to each other. They (The Banks) know that they can't trust the Banks.

im making money off this lol . i buy currency blocks and switch between Can and Us for a profit , i make about 20% profit per month. ^_^
In the futures market you may be right. But this is a buyers market from a mutual fund perspective.

Buyers market compared to last years earnings and multiples. Not next years. And if the fake earning are coming from fake CDO's, etc. all bets are off. If everyone prices to market, Insurance Co., Brokers, Banks, Hedge Funds, it is over, they can not price to market, or the scam is exposed. Pension Funds are a joke. It is all a Illusion, all a con. But I hope it keeps working.

:confused:Anyone old enough to remember even just back to '78 when home loan rates hit 16% and if you paid 30% down you could get a loan for 10% ? Well I sure do and I did well, very well when homes were being sold to anyone even tho they couldn't qualify for a tent. Even dumb ole me could see the writing on the wall and bailed out when the market was above 14,000. My broker even thought the market hadn't peaked. I agree that now is the time to buy not stuff your mattress. If you still see gloom & doom buy gold. I averaged about 12% in this failing economy and I am about as dumb as a sled track when it comes to investing. I still have faith in the USA and if it goes so do I. I am very comfortable sitting here watching the snow and being thankful for everything I have and living for NOW.

Humans by nature are inheritably greedy. During WW2 people were trading wheelbarrows full of paper money for a stale loaf of bread. They in turn burned the money to keep from freezing in the winter. Gold/silver was traded as currency, along with basic necessities.
Go ahead, fill your mattress with cash. Better yet, put it all in the stock market...........

By the way, you can buy physical gold/silver and have it in your possession. The whole idea is NOT to have it in the bank.

well since i live in the mining capital of the world i think i may switch carrers and go work in the mines i see kids with no skill making 120,000 a year and sleeping half of the shift away plus i can just stick some of the metals in my hardhat.....

This would cause an immediate collapse in banking, currencies, and economies worldwide. The bloodshed would follow after a short spell of collective stunned global silence, and lines at closed banks. Every city in the world could resemble Watts in 1965, or Detroit in 1967, overnight.
And, once again, the world would learn from history, that we don't learn from history. Never in the history of the world has an unsound currency survived. Some last longer than others. The unconstitutional faux dough we use in the U.S. today has been with us for less than a century.
A second scenario might begin with coalition forces withdrawing from Iraq. The Shiite majority in Iraq, after having waited so patiently for our exit, take over the police and army. Any objecting Iraqi Sunnis are removed. Iraq and Iran then consolidate and mobilize militarily, and then seize control of Kuwait.
Kuwait goes down without a peep from Western nations, who are no more willing to go back into the area than they were to go back into Vietnam. The Saudi Wahabis can then either sit silently or go to war, with either case having the same net effect for the West. The common interest of all of these Islamic fundamentalists is global chaos that they believe is required to usher in their Messiah. This area represents nearly 40% of global oil exports that would then be in consolidated, radical, hands.
In the case of the coalition pullout inspiring a bloody conflict of Arab against Arab, wouldn't oil infrastructure and revenue for war funding be the first targets?
Within weeks of U.S. elections we saw Chavez meet with the President of Iran. Is there any question that Chavez would help in any anti-American effort? Would Lybia's Kadafi hesitate to pile on, even if he had a choice? Would UAE go against their powerful neighbors? These three represent another 15% of global oil exports.
The U.S. is dependent on imports for over 60% of our petroleum supply. As a result we are dependent on a whopping 1/3 of total global exports. With the 55% of total world exports detailed in just the countries listed above, cut off by terrorists, where would we stand?
What if the consolidated Middle East producers then offered to sell oil to the U.S. - but only in exchange for gold - of which the U.S. today has but a pittance left. Then maybe they warn that any country that acts as a conduit and sells oil to the U.S., will be shut off, and any neighbor that sells the U.S. oil will be attacked.
The reader of this page can paint their own scenario. What will your life be like without gasoline, diesel and propane? What will your neighborhood look like?
Electricity may fare better, but only about 20% of today's electricity nuclear, with 17% from natural gas, and about 50% from coal. How much diesel is required to operate coal fired generating plants and to mine and truck coal? This might, however, be an abundance of electricity, since few individuals and businesses would have the cash to pay for it.
The US strategic oil reserve is 685 million barrels. Our daily consumption is 20.8 million barrels/day. That's a 32 day supply.
The point is, would we likely be off to the mall shopping? With nobody spending would your boss need you to come in to work - even if you had the gas to commute? What will your retirement fund look like? As the market collapses, you are prevented from redeeming money from your mutual funds for 30 days because they are closed to redemptions, as per that pesky perspectus that you didn't read. What would happen to the value of your home with so many in foreclosure?
With trucking at a standstill how would food move to your store - even if banks were open to get money out to spend on food? How about trash pickup in cities?
What would happen to money?
Time allowing, the Arabs and Chavez and the Chinese and whoever else, could then buy real estate in the U.S. on the courthouse steps for two cents on the dollar.
The above just for openers ......... your own imagination can connect the dots.
It's all speculation, Bragg. What ifs. I can legitimately ask a what if. What if nothing happens? I appreciate that you believe it enough to move to a remote location and became self sufficient. That's all cool. If that's right for you then it's right for you. I respect you for having the ....fortitude.... to live by your convictions. All of what you said could happen. And maybe it won't. My point has always been I've seen all this many times before and all the dire predictions that folks have made. None came true. Today it's the Islamic threats, yesterday it was the Communists and deregulation and NAFTA and a dozen other things. I refuse to live my life in fear of something that might never happen. Am I blind to it? Of course not. Do I prepare for the unexpected? You bet. But I'm a lot more concerned about a natural disaster than I am about economic collapse or any other world ending catastrophe. But hey, that's just me.

Well since what we call civilization gold has been used as "legal tender" simply because it's scarce. In the middle of the Sarah water could probably be a rare commodity and therefore would be of more value. Now let's get real, sounds like this country is going to hell in a handbag, gloom & doom all over. Wars have been fought over less than oil therefore the strong will survive as always. Don't underestimate the people of this country, we are human and can get down to anyone's level and win any fight. The basic training in WW2 by Applegate and others was basically to teach troops that in a fight anything goes, and the goody goody image had to be done away with. You do what is necessary to win. If we had the need and the guts to nuke Iran and shoot the ones that glowed in the dark, basic problem solved. We could become isolationists and let the rest of the world go. We could nationalize all foreign monies, land etc. This country isn't going down anytime soon and I am still investing in the stock market and not looking over my shoulder for some nut with a diaper on his head. How's that for being a long winded old man.

That is so very true. Currency has an arbitrary price but so do the precious metals, diamonds and crude oil. It has nothing to do with supply and demand and everything to do with politics and business. An object only has value if you and I agree it does.
If I were thirsty enough, Coot, I'd probably give you my gold bar and my cash for that canteen of water you've been sloshing around.

I had an office just north of you I supported. It was in Everett. Great town. I've flown into Seattle many times. One of the greatest sites I've ever seen was Mt. Ranier above a completely overcast sky. The plane would break through the clouds and there would be the mountain. Absolutely beautiful!

Like all depressions this one coming will have ups and downs before it hits. The quick fixes have been taking place sense Regan called for a quick fix for the recession. Once the quick fixes do not work, is when it will hit.
I am 55 yrs old. Chances are; I will see things get fixed a lot. I do not think I will see it in all its glory.
Have you noticed in the comming (USA)election, No one wants to bring up the economy. They skirt the topic but never get into it. They say something has to be done but never say what can be done!
If I had $20,000 right now! I would invest a very small part in my survival intrests. I would invest most in long term US bonds. Not that I can say what that would do. I have no idea on this and I am not about to try my limited mental powers on investing in the stock market. I do know if worse comes to worse, I will have something in my hand to whipe my back side on. If not that my grand kids can look at them and say Grand dad saved these for us. Lets start a fire. Or lets use the profits to go to school. I admit I just do not know.

What we are describing as a depression,was just a couple hundred years ago called life,money was hard to come by,because people were more concerned about taking care of their family by raising a garden,and hunting for meat,and preparing what they gathered/ raised to get them through another long cold winter.
We are spoiled,anything and everything we could want can be bought for the right price.
Sometimes,I think progress is the worst thing that has happened to mankind.

It is called The Great Depression. My grand mother lived threw it and my dad talks about it. I want to know something. From what I remember about their talking. It was not all that great! Actually it sucked!
Now why would you call something great, if it sucked so bad? The big depression makes sense or The Depression of the early 1900's sounds just a lot better.

Great refers to size in this case. The first World War was not called WW I. It was called "The Great War". It was not till the second Great War that they became WW I and WW II.

What we are describing as a depression,was just a couple hundred years ago called life,money was hard to come by,because people were more concerned about taking care of their family by raising a garden,and hunting for meat,and preparing what they gathered/ raised to get them through another long cold winter.
We are spoiled,anything and everything we could want can be bought for the right price.

DITTO TIMES A MILLION. If fact in lot's of the world what we would call a catastrophic Depression, they call every day life. What we call survival, they call every day life.

Us old telephone men are pussycats, it's the people we worked with you gotta watch out for. I just went along on hurricane, floods and other natural bumps in the road just to get on tv. I have roosted on a high pole for hours just to get a better view or rode across rivers & gorges on a cable buggy(board with 2 pulleys and a little rope) just to keep from walking around. Loved the gas underground, cleared the sinus. I only played with them for 32yrs after I had a vacation with my Uncle Sam which was also nice, I love warm weather. I do feel guilty sometimes and want to do some actual work, but I take a nap and the feeling goes away.:D:D
