I have a first aid kit, a fire kit, water filter with bottle, an extra set of clothes, a tarp, 100ft of cord, a .22 pistol with 100rds of ammo, a small fishing kit, wading boots, 24hrs of food, a knife and a small tool kit. I know that is 12 instead of ten, but that is what I have in a pack I keep in my car year around.

I add more gear for each season. Such as bug spray and sun screen in the summer, sleeping bag and overalls in the winter type of stuff.

Summer or winter the very first thing I pack is a sleeping bag (In the winter two bags). For me only, I am convinced that a sleeping bag is the single most critical tool for "MY" survival. Next would be Go-lite tent, 1'st aid kit, PLB, spare socks, motorcycle full rain suit, gloves, rope, 6 mill visqueen, nibbles.

My survival bag gets reconfigured almost daily in the summer. My survival needs are what most people would consider a three day backpack pack.

There are several areas, each one has a few things like a knife also incudes a sheath, a means of sharpening it

so
1. Fire
2. Knife / axe / cutting tools (think nessmuk trilogy of some kind)
3. Cordage / bailing wire / small fasteners like nails , snare locks etc.
4. shelter (clothing, foot wear, head gear, dew rag, hammock blanket or sleeping bag, shelter half or tarp or tent)
5. First aid (mirror, wounds, sickness, ointments , pills, special needs for current health like stroke meds)
6. Cooking (include any food and means to carry it and foraged stuff) (water bottle , billy can, spoon, canteen cup, maybe metal pan / plate)
7. Repair kit (include a vise grip needle nose plyers or perhaps a multi tool if i owned a multitool.)
8. Security (firearm ammo holster cleaning kit ammo , usually a hand gun and a rifle)
9. Commo, (anything from a pad and pencil throught cell phone or ham radio and even perhaps flare gun)
10 Personal hygine (soap, toothpaste n brush, comb, towel,)
and bonus round

11. fun stuff / comfort items. (camera, binoculars, pipe n smoking blend, flask of adult beverage, book , etc, what ever I may want to play with that drew me to the woods in the first place for that time. Omit if it is bug out of course.) Usually have at least a pocket Bible with me.

Depending on situation details, i would say my pack runs between 15 and 30 lbs. Much being the firearms the rifle and pistol actually being on belt / sling but still. Leave them out and id say 8 - 16 pounds of gear.

I see your living in Alaska a warm sleeping bag would come in really handy. I grew up in Northern Maine those winters were a killer.

It is around 25-35lbs, depending on season. I keep it a a military canvas bag with adjustable straps. Right now it weighs 27lbs.

I don't really have a survival kit either, I like my blanket roll and possible bag setup for the simplicity that I only take what I need. I have an alice pack but the couple times I have used it I load it with so much carp that it weighs 4 times what my minimalist setup weighs and most of it is stuff I hardly use while out.

My blanket roll holds:

50-40 wool blanket
Canvas military shelter half
Food
Flashlight
Cast iron skillet (ya it weighs more, but I like to have it)
Cordage
Spare clothes
First aid kit
Ridgeline
Tomahawk

Possibles Bag (which is a surplus gas mask bag):

Fire kit
Fishing kit
Water bottle
Canteen cup
Eating utensils
Ammo (if I have a gun with me)

A few things I plan on adding to my kit:

Oilcloth ground cloth
Billy can

Then I have on my belt knife and a mora rigged up as a neck knife

It's a few more than 10 pieces, but that is what I use and I use everything in the kit while out.

My backpack weighs around 35-40 pounds not including the sleeping bag, but has a lot more than 10 things in it. So what are the most important 10 things would have been a better question. My backpack is pretty much the standard 72 hour setup.

+1 on that. I have a belt pouch. It has compass, SAK, metal match, lighter, tinder, hootch cord, survival blanket, first aid, Tic Tacs, stock cubes,& Epirb. On the otherside of my belt, i have a 1 litre army canteen metal cup. This is not a survival kit, it is just part of my gear. My problem with survival kits, is people tend to not use them, till the sh*t hits the fan, or even worse leave them at home, because they are going to the same place they have been to 100 times before.

"survival kit" to me is an emergency, and redundant, set of kit. Usually smaller stuff.

My pack is always shelter, water, and food.

Shelter is a silnylon tarp 10'x12'. a good survival blanket, fire starting kit, rain gear, extra warm clothes.

Water is a water purifier, a canteen, a billy can, fire starting kit, a drinking cup, and a collapsed 2 qt canteen.

Food, is usually a couple mountain house entrees, fire starting kit, a can of corned beef, a can of cream of mushroom, some bisquick, some oil, and seasoning salt. I have a cheap aluminum plate, a canteen cup, and a billy can to cook.

I'm still working up a bannock recipe to replace the bisquick, I'm open to suggestions.

ETA- I, of course, have cutting tools. A wyoming saw(awesome), a big 9" knife, a 4" knife, and a swiss army knife. These fall into food, water, and shelter according to there use.

Well in my pockets, I always have a knife, lighter, and a paracord belt. I could not stand to carry that thing Rick has all day at work in my pocket. When I am not at work, add Glock to the list. I always have my backpack in my truck, and am not too far away from it at any time, but I guess I should somehow add a small compass, and a mirror. I cannot handle large bulky items in my jean pockets while in the office, and I refuse to wear a fanny pack in public, so this is somewhat of a problem for me.
I dont wear those big baggy pants with 14 pockets, so a large bulky kit is hard to carry!

Rick
04-17-2012, 07:11 AM
You have to start thinking out of the box, Pedro. You don't HAVE to carry it in your pocket. You could clip it to a belt loop or a belt. I wear cargo type pants a lot so dropping it in a cargo pocket is pretty easy. For your jeans you could use a small pouch that attaches to your belt. You could also break the components down so that some fit your pocket and some of the larger items in a pouch. You already carry some of the items so adding a mirror and compass should be pretty easy. It's just handy for me to carry it that way. The important thing is to have the items you deem important on you at all times.

I absolutely agree Rickster. I think I can find a polished metal mirror for my wallet, and maybe a button compass that will fit my pocket. Like I said, I dont wear cargo pants so I dont have all of those pockets.
Thanks for the suggestions Mi Hermano!

heck man, wear it as a necklace. there ya go, a survival necklace. Now watch the copycats.

1) Speaking of wearing it as a necklace... I'm looking for something stylish for my Fire Steel. I have my Swiss Army Knife setup as
my Key Chain Fob.

It's amazing what survival gear you find when cleaning the garage!

2) I just found 3 spools of electrical wire, from soldering projects. That's all the snares I'll ever need to make!
3) Wire Cutters. (To be replaced with a multi-tool soon!)
4) 1 Roll of pink nylon twine ;P I'll have colorful Snares and Nets!
5) I just found my decorative General Lee Pocket knife.

I'd hate to use it for chores, but it's there until it's replaced with a Buck knife. BTW, It's ridiculously sharp for a decorative pocket knife!

6) 1 Stainless Steel Bourbon flask. (for heating water)
7) 6 1 Gal Zip lock bags.
8) 1 Zip Lock bag full of cotton balls.
9) Neosporin
10) Toilet paper
11) Leather gloves
12) Dish washing gloves. (I just read to use these when Field dressing hogs)
13) Head Lamp
14) Kashi Meal replacement bars
15) Zip Lock Bag with 2 pair of socks.

16) My Bow-Tech Razor Edge compound bow, with true glow sight and Whisker-Bisket arrow rest is in route!

Dang that's more than 10, and I'm still working on my bag!

1: My kukri. Which also has a skinning blade and a sparking blade in the sheath. It's not a modern one, it's an Indonesian import.
2: a 100 yard spool of waxed non flavored dental floss. I have used it to make bow string, drop lines for fishing and various other things in the past and i keep several sewing needles in the box with it.
3: a roll of 55 gallon, clear heavy duty industrial garbage bags.
4: a sauce pan.
5: a ziplock bag that has various fishing hooks and sinkers in it.
6: an empty three liter soda bottle. I have used them for water yes, but i have also used them to make minnow and crayfish traps in the past.
7: a set of two files. one a half round and one a triangle file. They are great for sharpening my blades, but i have also used them for various kinds of wood, bone, and occasionally stone shaping.
8: a toothbrush.
9: an extra set of clothes, ie. jeans, a fleece, a bandana, socks, and an a frame under shirt.
10: a pair of needle nose vice grips.

Grab my ranger cord where it is tied to me and pull it back?

or go find a sharp rock and make me some abo kit.

I find ranger cords on almost everything these days, and if it is a survival situation those aren't coming off just anywhere. Not till I get where I'm going probably. I have spent to many days in the bush sleeping sitting up with a poncho over my head to worry about comfort camp,

If it is survival / bob time then I'm goning somewhere and on max effort till I get there.

***

I was listing a kit, I carry enough in my pockets / belt that nothing more would be necessary, just a nice upgrade.

I also have a "medecine bag" that has a good basic sort of things in it that I wear to the woods / and most other places. I guess it could be called a necklace cause there is also a knife on the same cord and usually a small led light cliped to it just cause I use a knife and light all the time and if sitting it is easier than standing up to dig in my pockets or work it out of a belt sheath.

***

And sorry for a smart alek answer, but truth be told I do think and practice stone age things and a sharp rock would be the starting point if butt nekked in the woods. From there fire and such would happen, or id die.

Being dead ain't no big deal, however the pain associated with dying can be a real pain.

This is what I carry in my "canoe bag" along with food and water but I dont carry it every day, just canoeing.

First aid kit
fire kit
water bag and bottle + purification tabs
water filter drinking straw
casualty blanket
50' paracord + 100' bank line 300lb test
compass
whistle
signal mirror
energy bars and Emergen-C powder
fixed-blade carbon steel knife and folder
multi-tool
knife sharpener
duct tape
surveyors tape
paper and pencil
candle and chemlight sticks
coffee filters
snare wire
extra batteries
mini PSK
shamwow towels

All this fits inside one of those tactical messenger bags like this one:

I consider the pockets my first step in the system.
SAK
BIC or similar
Folding clip knife
SAK money clip
Wallet....has card sized magnifier (possible fire, substitute for glasses, bandaids, spare key, safety pin, credit cards cash, ID, medical card and "stuff".

Belt
Small Multi tool, w/flashlight, ferro rod/striker and mini BIC, in SAK leather pouch.
cell phone
Key holder, keys with a few of the Rick style doodads, P38, 3ft tape, SAK key fob.

And Mini mag, at times.
That just my pockets and belt.....

THEN we start getting into the jackets/hooded sweat shirts, coats.
All have,
Knife,
BIC
Gloves
tissue
Carmex
Some have pin on compasses
All this is about 6 pounds, and I know this because the nurse at the Dr office weighed me, and I was 6 pounds more than the hospital weight just wearing the hospital toga.

She says You have gained weight........I said no I just have my coat and clothes on......

Now we can start on bags....and PSK's....LOL

I actually have two kits. The first is my SOS Kit ("Short-term Outdoor Survival") that goes into my day pack every time I/we are in the outdoors. First aid kit (in its own nylon pouch) plus a cutting edge, firemaking stuff, string/cord, space blanket and a couple of lawn & leaf bags. Water and snacks are in the bag anyhoo, as are windbreakers and lightweight microfleece hoodies.

UPDATE: Went back and double-checked. Add compass, small flashlight, and water purification tabs to the SOS kit.

-- Nighteyes

FOLLOW-UP: Well, THAT'll learn me not to attempt editing anything before my second cup of caffeine. Somehow managed to delete the description of my second kit. In summary its a 5-day earthquake emergency kit that I keep in the back of my Explorer, along with 24 one-liter bottles of water and an empty external frame backpack (in case I have to abandon the Explorer.)

I think we all try to balance "perceived need" to what we would carry on a daily basis.

It's one thing to go on a hunting trip, hike, camping, or even in your vehicle, and carry a bag of gear and think nothing of it......But it quite something again to walk around the block, go the church, school, shopping,..... with a med Alice pack and a 5" belt knife.

So now the question is "What can I carry ?, and is small enough, that you will wear it, doesn't look like you are zombie hunting"....as a famous man once said, "If you don't have it, you can't use it".

This leads to build up a kit, till you can't or don't carry it, then starting the process over again.......Note, the last kit is left intact, "just in case", and you can start over in the quest for "cooler gear".....(It's a sickness)

Did a thread on my little belt pouch, a while back, that I do carry daily, unless I going to a wedding or some such, and is just based on an old leather SAK pouch.
Putting on my Sunday jeans on today, thought I would click a couple of pic's.

I wear this little leather knife pouch (from an earlier SAK) on my belt daily.

Small multi tool, (el-cheapo), but does come in handy...has LED flashlight on one side.....so I can leave the mini mag behind most days.
Mini BIC
Mini ferro rod, and striker.
Wad of cotton balls stuffed into bottom....keeps stuff from sliding down, and works as tinder.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y139/hunter63/DSCF1047.jpg

The quest continues........It is kinda fun with all the plotting and planning......

I work in the Department of Redundancy Department. Every year, at Christmas and Birthday times, I tell my wife and kids, "A man can't have too many knives or flashlights."

I carry multiples of: fire-starting means; knives; and, light sources. Why? They're VERY useful...they can get lost...they can get broken...they can be small, attractive barter items...they can be shared as merciful gifts to someone in need.

This post is not about a full-blown B.O.B. Rather, it's just one example (my humble example) of what an E.D.C "Survival" kit can/might look like. It's broken into three parts: the pant pockets kit; the belt kit; and, the cargo pocket (or jacket/vest pocket) kit.

The main idea here is to carry items that will add efficiency to a survival effort, relying on experience/knowledge/skills to: find or create shelter; to harvest kindling and fuel wood; to scavange or fabricate a container in which to carry and boil water; to scavange, forage, or hunt/fish for food.

Pant Pockets Kit:

In the left pant pocket I have a CRKT spring-assisted TRIUMPH; and, folding money clipped with a CRKT K.I.S.S. knife.

In the right pant pocket I have a Victorinox Trekker and my key ring. On the key ring (aside from keys) are the following:

Victorinox Officer Suisse
Firesteel.com firesteel tube
Peanut lighter
P-38 can opener
INOVA LED flashlight

Belt Kit:

On my belt I carry: my 37-year old Buck 110 Folding Hunter; a Fenix LD20 LED flashlight (205 lumens powered by two AA cells!); and, a Leatherman Wave in the standard cordova sheath. Also in the Wave sheath are:

a stick of soft magnesium, on the left, to be scraped for tinder
a Firesteel.com firesteel rod, on the right, for fire ignition
a carbide scraper, stored in the front pocket of the sheath
a tight-twisted jute lanyard that can be fluffed for tinder

Cargo Pocket Kit:

This kit is contained in a "baby soda bottle" -- the injection-molded blank from which a 2-liter soda bottle is blow-molded. It's kind of like a large, unbreakable test tube, with a standard screw on cap. I wrapped the outside of the tube with multiple layers of: 550-paracord (cordage); jute twine (cordage and tinder); and Gorilla-brand duct tape (for repairing anything and everything, of course!). Wrapped in with the paracord is an INOVA LED flashlight. There are also a half-dozen rubber bands that can be used for rubber bandy things.

When the tube is held vertically in the hand, and the cap is removed, the first thing on top is a liquid-filled button compass.

Inside the tube, under the compass, are:

a small ziplock bag containing vaseline soaked cotton balls
a standard sewing bobbin wound with 10# spider wire for snares or fishing line
a Firesteel.com ferrocerium rod
a P-38 can opener
a small, folding razor blade
a small, folding saw blade
two fish hooks and two "fly" hooks

Memory is an odd thing. For the life of me I sometimes can't remember why I wanted to survive anyway! You youngsters still think something good might happen down the road. Us old folks look at a situation and think, "Oh He!! just let it go! My feet hurt and I am not pumping out that last 5 miles today. Them berries, bugs and tree bark just arn't worth the trip."

We get the same way when young folks start talking about "Bugging Out". Bug out to where? I been working 60 years to get where I am, I ain't going anywhere! I don't have a BOB, I have a Get Home Bag. Oddly, a get home bag is a lot lighter than a "bug out bag". We don't have to depend on it to stay alive forever, just to get home.
