Now that the info about pink slime is so public, McDonald's, Burger King, and Taco Bell have stopped using it in their food.........but the USDA says it's fine and they are still feeding it to kids in public schools.

Remember the little girl who was fed "chicken nuggets", instead of what her mother packed for her lunch, by that school? I wonder what was in those "nuggets".

It's really disgusting what's floating out there...which makes me wonder, in general:
How can parents, who are concerened about what their kids watch and learn, and go as far as home schooling them, then turn around and let them eat crap?
Adults eating crap is one thing, but kids?

It's really disgusting what's floating out there...which makes me wonder, in general:

Adults eating crap is one thing, but kids?

My little one is wise to it! She packed her own lunch last night! Teaching to do it right themselves is the right road!

I always thought bologna was pink slime right from the beginning, and that stuff has been around for a hundred years. In fact, some people on here must eat a lot of it because they are always full of it:tt2:

Sadly, it didn't really surprise me that the fast food chains used it. It only mildly surprised me that schools used it.....but for it to be exposed, and the USDA saying that it's OK, and the schools continuing to use it is just insane, to me.

Hey, I have no problem with mystery meat.....just don't try to sneak it in to real meat, and sell it as such. LOL

I'm not affraid to admit to eatting potted meat and crackers.......but I don't call it N.Y. strip! LOL

Yeah I have 2 of those small cans of potted meat in my BOB. Hey it is meat, and it doesn't taste bad. When I'm out in the woods and need a quick snack, potted meat and crackers taste pretty darn good. But it seems like everything tastes better when your'e out in the woods and I dont know why!

Pink slime is just "connective tissue"? Well There is certainly some of that in almost all the meat I process myself. I think that people have come to a point where they think too much about what they eat. A million years ago humans would scavenge whatever rotten meat they could off any carcass they could find, and I bet they were happy to have it. But nowadays we seem to have something against substandard meals.. but when and at what point did we start having a standard?
Down here we eat all kinds of stuff that other folks would gag and puke if they knew what was in it. It's why we don't tell anyone what we've cooked for supper until everyone has had some to eat.

"It's hog-head cheese."

I'll let you guys look that up...
I ate the crap that the schools served for years, and I turned out pretty okay (maybe not so much the "pretty" part)

You guys have never worked in a place that manufacturers food or drink have you? Pink slime may be the least of your worries. I've watched guys take a drink out of a soda bottle on the line and the bottle go through the capper and get packed for sale. We used to whack rats with a 2x4 where the sugar was stored during break. They liked to munch on sugar. Go figure. If folks knew what went into the food they eat they'd never eat anything again.

Ya know.....we could be looking at this all wrong. They have just managed to shortened the time it takes (using pressure, chemicals, etc.) to do what it takes us hours and hours, to do when we BBQ. Think about it. We cook low and slow to break down the fat and connective tissue. (By products.) That's the part that makes it taste good! LOL

That's not the issue, YCC...at least IMO.
It's about all food preservatives and additives, (right out of science fiction) some of them potentially carcinogenic, which did not exist even a 100 years ago, let alone a million.

Follow me on this one.......nothing we consume. Nothing. Not potted meat, not spam, not even fast food will ever be as bad for you as Haggis. I'll eat anything...well...except Brussels Sprouts...but even I draw the line on Haggis.

You are correct. We don't cook with those additives, and just last night my aunt and I were talking about her cat's food. I said "I bet that stuff really is delicious!" then I looked at the ingredients, and it started off sounding okay... Beef, pork, mechanically seperated chicken, meat by-products.. Then it took a hard left turn at those big words B mentioned before. Before I even thought about it, I said "I ain't eatin none of that crap!". Then I came home and looked at some of the stuff in the pantry, and sure enough..

And don't think I'm just picking on the northerners and city-folk. I know a lot of folks down here that are "picky eaters" who eat at McDonalds on a regular basis. If they only knew!

You are probably right because there sure is a lot of that crap that comes out of them after they are born! And it's pretty gross. By the by, I don't care how many pounds are listed on the box of diapers they will NOT hold that much. It comes out around the legs and up the back at about half that weight. Don't ask me how I know.

I'm an equal opportunity critic when it comes to food, W. My view on McD has already been shared in the Soylent thread and in post #2 here. Cuisine, it ain't. I guess that's not our, (or yours, for that matter) forte.
