A preschooler at West Hoke Elementary School ate three chicken nuggets for lunch Jan. 30 because the school told her the lunch her mother packed was not nutritious.

The girl’s turkey and cheese sandwich, banana, potato chips, and apple juice did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines, according to the interpretation of the person who was inspecting all lunch boxes in the More at Four classroom that day.

The Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs - including in-home day care centers - to meet USDA guidelines. That means lunches must consist of one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home.

It would be the last day my child was there, or anyplace else that had this practice.

While I can appreciate healthy guidelines, it is up to parents to decide what their children eat. Guidelines should be just that - guidelines. Yes, the agency did admit a mistake was made, but the mistake they admitted to was that the provided lunch did in fact pass their guidelines and that the parents should not have been charged for providing a lunch. That to me is still far too intrusive - they plan to continue their inspections and providing food for the children who's meals don't pass the guidelines.

I guess we can agree to disagree on this. I know kids that went to school with no lunch and without some oversight those kids go hungry. We might be looking at two sides of the same glass. When my kids were little I sometimes paid for lunches for other kids whose parents couldn't afford it and who I knew would not have lunch because my kids were sharing theirs with them. I think some responsible oversight assures those kids do get a good meal. And let's face it, some parents are either too strung out, too lazy or just don't care enough to be worried about their kid's lunches. It's a shame but it's the real world. Where some of you see your rights being trampled I see kids that aren't getting fed.

I believe first and foremost that parents should have the ability to provide lunch for their kids. I also believe that the school should oversee that kids are eating a fairly balanced lunch. If there is any concer, the school should meet with the parents of the respective kids. If that fails, the school should file a complaint with the local children's services to ensure the welfare of the kids. No where do I see it fit for the federal govt to send federal agents into schools and confiscate lunches. That is very intrusive on the rights of any parent and not a system that I would participate in.

What if it was your lucky day you didn't have time to make your kid a good lunch, you gave him money to buy a nice nutricious school lunch but he used the money to trade for baseball cards, then you didn't get the phone call to come in and be spoken to by the school teacher who noticed so they called child services on you.
Far fetched but completely fine in your scenario.
I'm all for kids getting fed properly. There are ways to do it that don't involve terrorizing kids about their home lunches.
Heck, I work with a couple of guys, adults, who don't get fed properly who have family health issues that are eating up their money, they don't have a buck and a half to get a slice of pizza. They give up a lot for their kids. If one of us notices a guy a little short on cash, we pony up or share what we have. All it takes is a little observation.

This isn't about kids going hungry. Kids in school are not starving from lack of parental care, finances ect. There are plenty of food programs that prevent this. This is about some gov't paid program that took away a healthy lunch and replaced it at their discretion with some chicken nuggets. I have 3 kids in school right now. No way in hell are "they" going to go that far with my kids. It IS the result of too much government.

The Dept. of Education budget is pretty fragmented. There are mandatory dollars spent by statute, money that goes to states (broken down by elementary, secondary, etc), Congressional money for special incentives, the President's budge and the President has a discretionary education budget that can be used for whatever he chooses. All of which is tax payer money.

Education should be constructed at the school district level in conjunction with parents. There has to be some level of standards but the curriculum should be developed at the local level. Instead, we have a one size fits all education system that's pretty archaic. If you have not seen your state's graduation rates you will probably be shocked. Nationally, about 1 in 3 don't graduate high school. That's pretty appalling and clearly shows we are failing our kids. Tax money should be available whether is public, private or Christian education. The government is writing a blank check for our money so they should have no say in how it's spent as long as reasonable and responsible guidelines are being met.
