I stay away from political discussions here, but it's good that those pirates will stop thinking that they are in some way invulnerable. They're probably rethinking their plans right now. Kudos.

what was the significance of these two people, both had been in Africa for many years on humanitarian missions , they knew the risks when they got there, this stinks , kinda like those assholes who were Afganistan ,you know the those women who cried about the Taliban ,they were missionaries too , look how long we wasted over there! Somalia , can now claim this was an act of war on our part! No way was this a smart move!

I have to disagree. With my own ability I possess I can go where I please in my region without fear or living in fear. While I don't go looking for trouble, If I'm running late and need to make up time I don't worry about going right through the very worst parts of town. Now zoom that out to the international level- To a degree I can go where I want without fear in this mean world because the Us Gov has got my back, as much as possible in the powers of the USA.(Was even better in the Reagan era!) I apprecaite that.
I guaren-dang-tee you those two appreciate it far more than I.

While there may have been some ulterior motives I think it's important the world understand that Americans are not acceptable targets. The Somali government praised our action and thanked us for having eliminated the pirates. We should hope that retaliation, swift and permanent, is taken against anyone that tries to do us harm. 1 or 100 million we are Americans. If you don't draw the line at one where do you draw the line?

Actions like this certainly aren't taken on a whim. There is a LOT of backstory to any hostage rescue or really any mission that could draw a lot of focus. Somalia's pirates used to be P.O'd fisherman railing against foreign countries coming in and stealing their fish. Then someone figured out that they could charge foreign ships a tax if they armed themselves and looked serious. Then they figured out that they could take over civilian ships and charge a ransom 'tax' for anyone moving through what they consider to be their waters (which apparently go out to 1000 miles from the coast). They learned to manage hostages over long periods, they built networks, and other bad guys found them, land bad guys. It's really kind of an expected devolution in a country that's been unmanaged by anyone with the juice to do anything good for people there. Sadly, if pirates get away with the money even 5 percent of the time they take a ship, they'll do it forever (and their success rate is a lot higher than that). None of the above should be mistaken for sympathy for those jerks who decided it was fine to hurt innocent people for the sake of a buck. I'm glad that their willingness to keep doing these things doesn't mean we'll quit shooting the ones who try it with Americans and our allies.

well lets see then , there are 6 being held hostage in the southern phillipines right now , 2 are Americans, there is 2 being held hostage in Peru , there are several in other central american nations can we call them all al queda hostages (isnt that why they are being rescued? and send in the seals? , I dont think so , how much did this little venture cost , hopefully like the Osama bin laden bs , hopefully they took the time to give the pirates a full muslim. christian funeral and buried them properly so they wont go to hell like they did for bin laden , dont want to be considered unfair or politically incorrect !

It's actually much deeper than that lovesfreedom. It goes back some 40 years and a failed effort to unit Somalis in Ethiopia, Kenya and French Somililand. There was a military coup somewhere around '69 that brought a criminal dictatorship to power under Mohamed Siad. A true bast.ad of a ruler. The failure to unite the Somalis rears its head again in the 90' when Ethiopia overthrows Sellasie and 10s of thousands of Ethiopian Somalis flee into Somalia. Siad is finally overthrown in the early 90' leavig a country ruled mostly be warlords (Siad's clan being one example). A resulting civil war destroyed just about anything resembling a gov't. The U.N. tried tried intervene eventually leaving the country because of the hostilities they were subjected to. Every clan was out for themselves and all fought the U.N. forces.

Today, you have a lawless society in which the individual can do whatever they want with no fear of retribution since no laws exist. That's the very abridged history.

Semper Fi - It's not that simple and you know that. The two hostages rescued had be held since October but the US received solid intel on where they were being held and acted on that intel. It's not just sending in the cavalry but knowing where to send them and what they will be up against. It's the whole package to be successful.

I was definitely oversimplifying things by not going back into history more on the land side. I wasn't in the military yet for most of that (I enlisted in 1999) so I can only speak to the last 13 years or so, but my Dad was in Somalia and he used to tell me what he was allowed to about what was going on. Not a pretty picture.
One of the things that we did as an exercise during a crisis intel course I went through was to paste up a blank map of the globe with country delineations. Along the side of the map was a color scale ranging from hot colors at the bottom, and cold colors at the top. The colors were labeled by even clumps of numbers (I think ours were 3 numbers per color) from 15 to 45. So 15-18 would be red, 19-21 orange, etc, etc. Then we went to the CIA world factbook (on the regular internet) and wrote down the average age of the population for all the countries. Then we went back and colored in the countries according to the numbers we'd put in. It sounds like something a second grader could do (and they could) but it was an extremely accurate picture of the crisis hotzones and stable zones across the globe. Once you think of the average age of a decision maker, it gives you an idea of what kind of decisions are going to get made there. The average age in the Balkans was in the late teens during the worst of that crisis. Think of the 17 year olds you know (or used to be) and what would've seemed like appropriate measures of response to rivals' actions (real or perceived) against you? The quiet, fair, thoughtful 17 year olds aren't the ones the other kids tend to listen to.
Kidnapping and holding hostages are a profitable venture in areas where profit is hard to come by. It's not an out of the ordinary intel problem to figure out who's doing what and where, and its definitely not a strange ops problem to go into any environment and secure a target, but when the political folks are trying to respect boundaries and glad hand with teenagers or their sociopath leaders, everything takes forever. And then the target moves, you have to reacquire, than the whole stupid thing starts over. If it were up to me, we would go in and grab any American being held anywhere, immediately, no matter what. But that's why I'll never be President. :\ Too many kerfuffles.
Somebody owes me 20 bucks for being able to throw the word kerfuffles in there. Meow.

If I was ever in that situation I think i'd be real happy someone came to get me and plumb tickled if they came from home. Those people were someones mothers, daughters, sons, or fathers and i'm sure there families would have given whatever they had to get them back. I don't care what agenda they may have helped, just that it got done!

lovesfreedom - I thought that was an excellent summation. Your insight into the average age of the population is right on the mark. The one country that does NOT fit that mold (miraculously) is the new country of South Sudan with an average age of around 18. I've found the CIA Fact Book to be a rich source of information. Good post!
