View Full Version : Trekking New Terrain
I was wondering if any of you have little tips you might share when trekking across new terrain. I had read somewhere once upon a time that it is a good idea to look at the trail behind you from time to time and certainly when you pass identifiable landmarks or bends/turns on the trail. If you have to trek back out the way you came in the trail will then be familiar to you and it won't be as easy to get lost or make a wrong turn. I've practiced that for quite some time.
You've got a couple of the basics in a nutshell there, Rick. I always check behind me when paddling a new water system too, it's all familiar on the way back. People tend to mark trees with a notch or a cut and wind up getting lost anyway. There's a few basics that people over look.
1. They notch the tree as they're passing it so they'll have a "mark" for the way back. Notch it after you've passed it if you want to see your mark on the way back.
2. Surveyor's tape! That's why they make it flourescent orange or yellow!
3. Bend a twig or branch in the direction your travelling. If someone has to come in to find your lost butt, they'll know what direction to take. If you're coming back out, go the opposite way of the way the branch is pointing.

I constantly trek across new terrain. Some people call it trespassing, I call it exploring. The landmarks are always good to take note of, but a lot of the time you'll come across long stretches of landmark free terrain. Whereas there's usually always a tree that stands out amidst the rest, trying to find your way back to that certain tree or landmark could potentially get you more lost than you already are. I generally make my own landmarks, or treemarks, along the way about every 20 to 30 feet. If I need to go back, I just follow my cookie crumbs. I rarely ever stay on trails and a lot of the areas I trek seldom even have trails of human design. There's usually a good animal trail nearby, but those often go into territory impassible by humans.
The most imperative thing to do is pay attention to every detail. If you are going into new terrain, you are intentionally getting lost to begin with, the best way to find yourself. Finding your way also depends on the terrain that you're in. Indiana's mostly woods or field, with a marsh here and there, if you're north of where I live. If you're south of where I live, it's the same but with a lot more hills, sinkholes, and sudden cliffs. If you're in the woods, or occasional marsh, then you definitely want to make your own landmarks. A compass is obviously handy. I explore with a compass, walking stick, machete, first aid kit, sheath knife, and my cell phone.
I'm about due for another excursion, I try to get lost at least twice a month.

I use Beware of Dog signs too.
Use those to set your pace.

Now that Rick and I seem to have gotten that whole "homoerotic repartee" out of our systems...man hug indeed....anyone else with pointers on trail marking, trekking strange ground etc, would be very welcome to share their wisdom. I swear you can't have a serious thread running here without someone posting junk on it. And God Bless those little New Guinea pygmies, I hope they're safe and warm in their little New Guinea pygmie houses tonight.

Well when I go trekking in a new area, I usually print out an aerial map of the land from Google Earth. That program is probably the most useful one out there now. It will show you where clearings are and such, and distinguishable landmarks that are generally visible from a distance.
When I lived up north, me and my hunting partner would go paddling up and down lake and river systems that we'd never been on before and then check them out on a map when we got back
I do like google earth. I still have my topos but being able to actually see the terrain is really helpful. Now that Google is starting to use 3D at ground level I think topos will become obsolete.

I usually wait until afterwards to check the aerial photography of the area. If there are enough landmarks in the area, one can trace his/her footsteps almost exactly. I wait until I've been in the area four or five times before I do that, as I take a different route each time.
If you're ever in Hoosierland, Trax, we'll have to do some adventuring. Or if I'm in Canada. Shoot, the little Wolfpack get together might be an opportune time. You can hug me if you want, but lets make sure it's the real brotherly love hug and not the Kentuckian brotherly love hug.

No, this is something going on in two different threads.
Watch out though, that type of confusion will get you into the same predicament you're already confused about.
Once again, goofing around has led us astray (yes yes MY goofing around too) The other point I want to make about studying terrains is --and it amazes me how often people overlook this-- follow waterways if at all possible or at least check them out. Rivers and creeks don't change direction! So if you're going up river on your way out, you're going the right way if you're going downriver on the way home!
People often, in my humble experience, participate in outdoors events like hiking and/or trekking with little or no experience. They head out full of eagerness and some apprehension but not a lot of knowledge. Usually, they have faith that the person who invited them will take care of them. Two potential problems, what if that person gets separated from their "guide" or what if the "guide" is a poser. The apprehension quickly wins out over the eagerness, panic kills. So, with all the goofing around aside, I'd recommend to anyone heading out new into the wilds to make note of a few of the suggestions here, common sense really isn't all that common as they say.

I can't recount how many times I've met up with people on hiking trails and some off trails, and a few I've had to go find cuz they wandered off trails, who really have no idea what went wrong with their little nature hike.
Usually they're out of shape, gasping for air and whining about how much their feet hurt. Not a "survival" situation per se, just people who thought they could go out and enjoy a nature hike by taking along the recommended amount of water. I've found people sitting on rocks staring blankly into space because they suddenly realized they didn't know if they'd turned left or right at the last trail split, it really is that easy to get lost. I was with someone once who got "lost" picking berries and she was maybe 25 yards from the highway, but the thickets of bush were thick enough in the area that she'd wandered into that she couldn't see her way out. This was no amateur, this woman had grown up on a trap line.Anyway, she wasn't hard to find. The point I think I'm trying to make is...why do people think they can wander off into an environment that they know little or next to nothing about without at least the minimum of preparation? For some, that might mean spending ten minutes a couple of times a week on a treadmill during the less attractive months weatherwise to be outdoors. Not some huge workout program, there's plenty enough Rambo's out there, but good enough general conditioning that your friends don't have to leave you behind on a trail some place. Study landmarks, if there aren't any, make some, as posted earlier. Just some thoughts, I have to go dip back into my mushroom stash now, reality's crowding in all around me.
I've been mulling this over and I think I've come up with a reasonable analogy of survival skills. Dopey but understandable. It's a great deal like a car. You can't run a car without gas, without a battery, not very far without tires or a water pump or oil or coolant. It takes all the components to make a car run. And it takes all the components to keep your butt alive in the wild. You have to have the knowledge, the gear, the experience, some imagination and a bit of luck. If you take an item off a car, then it either won't make it very far or it won't go at all. If you remove an item from your survival "components" then you either won't make it very far or you won't survive at all. Ta Da!

damn kids always in a hurry why rush thru the outdoors do you need to see whats on the other side slow down take in your enviroment pay attention to oh look pretty birdie what was i saying oh ya pay attention to where you are trax i am the guy following you in the bush removing all that gawd awful orange tape stop it there are much more natural ways to mark your way.
I don't use the stuff (he grumbles trying to find his way home after wareagle's passed by) but I'd recommend it to new people learning. You may note sir, that I did offer several viable alternatives. I once asked a geologist I was working with why they called the vest he was wearing a dummy vest (blaze orange, big yellow X across the back) He said No! Why? I said because if you need it, it means you're lost, dummy.

I bring a map, compass plus my dog who leads me back; but what I find helps when learning new terrain is to sort of look at the bigger picture - not focus just on this or that landmark, but get the feeling for the different small parts that make up the landscape you're travelling through. Open meadows bordering on forest in which there is a strip of wetlands that ends at rock outcrops....that way, even if you lose your trail, you'll hopefully have a sense of roughly where you are in that particular landscape.
Marking places with flagging tape or blazes isn't something I do or like, partly because when you first start exploring an area you never pick a route that is so amazing you'll want to travel it over and over again, even on the way back...or at least that's my experience.

I just follow the signs nature leaves me. I 25 south to us 285 East till you get to cr 335 north to where I want to be!
I check the area I am going to be, on a map, before I get there. Then once out, I use a compus. I turn around a lot and look at the area behind me. I have only been lost (that I will admit too) once! But that was one heck of a mall. 5 food courts and 3 starbucks.

Most harmful emotions to mankind; anger, panic, despair, and impatience. These not only lead one astray from the paths one walks in a philosophical standpoint, but the paths one walks in reality. Unless one trains everyday to control such emotions, they WILL get the best of him/her. This is also conditional. Those who spend the majority of their lives in the outdoors/country are more likely to find their way back. Is it the same path they took in? Not necessarily. This could be looked at as "six ways in, twelve ways out."
Those from a more urban environment are more likely to get lost. Take all of the news broadcasts that report missing or lost hikers, and find out which of them came from the city. 9 out of 10. They got lost because they don't know squat about hiking and the outdoors in general other than what they've read. Anything outdoors to them is "recreation." These are the people most susceptible to succumbing to the emotions I stated earlier while in the wild.
On the other hand, I grew up in a very small town and spent the most of my time growing up out in the woods. I got poison ivy 3 to 5 times a year. My body was not trained by the high school wrestling team, my body was trained beforehand by jumping creeks, scaling the sides of ravines, climbing trees, making my way through knocked down trees and thick briars, and going where few men have gone before. When I get into a city, however, I'll get lost on the same road I drove in on. I'll get mad, I'll panic a bit, I'll think "why me," and I'll make choices on a whim that gets me further lost.
I forget what point I was trying to make here, but if you're from the city, either stay there or get outside every single chance you get, because the wilderness and surviving in it is not a past time, it's a way of life. Never be afraid to get lost in reality (being lost in the philosophical sense is never a good idea) When you find the most beautiful sight you've ever seen, it's pretty hard to say that you were ever lost, maybe you were on the right track the entire time.
There's also not gangsters in the wilderness to shoot you and take your $h!t. Wildlife might get you, but on a lighter note, I can't think of any better way to go out than fighting a Grizzly bear. If you earn your life in the branches of civilization, why not earn your death at the roots of civilization.

There is some truth to what you stated. But! Panic and the other emotions have a lot to do with implicit and explicit learning (you can look those up at your leisure. I won't bore you but here's a blah blah link)

A lot of professionals have panicked in nasty situations (fighter pilots, divers, race car drivers, etc.) and lived to tell the tale. They have no explanation for why they panicked. It is not a logical thing but a physiological thing. Short term memory can even be repressed during a state of panic.
Beyond that, your assertion about city folks not being as adept in the wild as those who have spent time there (or vice versa) is also true. Again, implicit vs. explicit learning.
What part did you not understand?
I go out all the time and don't mark a thing, I carry a sun dial ring but nothing else. Even in new terrain and the deep forest. I think its about learning skill sets to deal with not getting lost, the time I was in the Teetons I did carry pace beads like we used in the rangers but then I didn't even need them, I used the sun and stars and terrain features as my compass. I think its practice that gets one used to not getting lost, and a fool that just runs out into the wilds. This said that does not mean I can't get lost, i've just been trained and learned skills to find my directions. If lost I can quickly find my compass points and then get back on track.
Once again, my suggestions were meant for people with little or no experience, once they've been wandering around out there for a bit, I'm sure they'll pick up the sense of finding their way to and from where ever they're going. I'm not going to need to dissect anyone's brain for this nor am I interested in doing so, if you're new, take precautions. I've been out bumping around in the bush for over forty years, I don't mark my trails, I don't use a compass or sundial or gps. If you're new to this forum and/or nature hiking/trekking, I don't recommend my methods for you. I don't want your lost *** on my conscience.

If that paragraph negated the first one, oh well. This is what I was saying as far as the bear and civilization goes. Before man lived in civilization, he lived in the wilderness. By civilization, I mean cities, countries, etc. This began with tribes of nomadic people settling down in an area that they could call home. From this, the wilderness started becoming more and more distant to man and "civilized" values took a stronger and stronger hold on man. Why build it yourself when we can make it a specific job for someone else? It became more and more prevalent, and now if you took one simple manifestation of mans imagination away, money, the majority of the "civilized" people would die. I was born at the, so far, end result of the development of civilization, so why not die by doing what man did beforehand? If that negates what I was saying about emotion, perhaps it was taken out of context. I don't know. How it negated the first one is now confusing the $h!t out of me.

I have seen a lot of surveyor's tape in my local areas, tons in fact. It kinda scars the area, in my opinion. But is very useful. I have always been a fan of building cairns at the trail junctions and frequently look behind me, as well.
The ability to take a back azimuth is also important. Anybody tried the "little flag to a stick in the ground" trick and then picked them up, walking back home? Only good for an out and back hike, but still a little less damaging that leaving the f-ing surveyor's tape everywhere.
