View Full Version : Collecting Firewood in Winter?

Alright, this might sound stupid but here is the scenario:

Northern of Qubec (Canada), winter time, at least 2 foots of snow on the ground.

One simple question: What is the most efficient and fastest way to harvest your firewood for a night?

I use a chainsaw, they work just as good in the winter as summer. I just drag them in with the dozer.

Or cut down dead standing trees ( I'd guess a spruce where you are talking about) saw it into lengths and split it up. Do enough for more than one night and then do it again until you get a good supply built up. Don't just collect enough for just one night.
This is assuming you have a shelter with a stove or fire pit. If in the open save some whole logs.
Or you can break/cut branches off of fallen trees, but I would do the other.
You need a good buck saw and axe or a good chainsaw and bulldozer plus fuel for both.

Make your camp where the wood is. It’s exhausting rummaging around in two feet of snow trying to collect enough wood to last a cold night. That’s the kind of stuff toboggans where created for.

You can look for standing deadwood or anything that has fallen. You don't even have to cut it up. Make an A Frame or Star fire and feed the big wood into the fire once you get it going. I'm with ClayPick, work smart not hard unless you are really cold and need the exercise to warm up.

Alright! My main concern was to have problems finding wood on the ground while the ground is completely covered up.
Thanks. :)

Well you kinda left it wide open.
Now if you would have said, "I'm lost in the north land with 3 ft of snow on the ground, how can I gather wood to burn or some such....

No mention of equipment or lack of, temps, are you on the move and just stopping for a night?
Type of forest, open land, hill country?......so yeah answers will be all over the place.

I always have a folding saw in my backpack. Just cut up some dead low hanging limbs, start a fire before it gets dark, and keep cutting some to hold you throught the night and into the morning. The next day, branch out and get a good supply of big stuff. I have found dead branches by scrubbing my foot around in the snow below trees, sometimes you find good dead branches that are dry enough to burn once you have a base fire. Sometimes you can find dry leaves underneath the snow.
Moral of the story, I look for my wood below the trees! There is nothing wrong with taking some dead low hanging small branches in order to get a fire going, then try to only use fallen timber after that.

I wasn't being facetious. Here's a thread that you could wax poetic for a good while I'm sure. I would bet dollars to doughnuts you've done that at below 0 or in a blinding blizzard or some other inhospitable situation. Here is a chance to be a teacher. Don't let it pass.

I have my best luck with standing dead trees. It's tough cause the constant precipitation here but a good 6" ded tree under a larger spruce to give it some protection is my best bet. That and enormous old ceders. Old ceders shed they outside and their center shifts. You can find whole abandoned trunks of reasonably dry wood right next to the living tree.

Why not share some of your experience? I'm sure you have a few nights in those conditions under your belt.
Last week-end, I went biking to Oka with my friends. Our plan was to go camp for the night in the national park. We indeed have found a good spot for some camping, and we ended up keeping a big fire going all night because it was -18C. In the end, not one got cold, and I believe it was a great success.
Gathering wood was very easy because everything breaks so easily when it's frozen. However, the difference is that there was no snow at all. So then I started thinking what would be the best in the same conditions, except with 2 feet of snow.
In a few weeks, I'm going to restart the experiment with 2 friends a few hundred kilometers more up north. There will be plenty of snow. I'm supposed to spend 2 days and 2 nights there with them. We'll bring some oatmeal, but we intend on trapping some hares.

Dead, low hanging branches on dead standing trees will be your main source of dry wood. You may find some under the snow that are dry enough to burn depending on how cold it is and the consistency of the snow. Powder snow is generally quite dry as it occurs with colder temperatures such as -20c to -30c, and I have found that the wood under this type of snow is usually fairly dry.

Put a keen eye to the tree tops, too. Finding widow makers in summer isn't too tough. Finding them in winter can be a bit harder. Especially with snow piled on the branches.

Have you snared hares or rabbits before? I wouldn't count on getting food easily, you'll have to work with knowledge and experience to appreciate it. You'll have to set yor snares properly or the hares/rabbit may not offer themselves for your "repas". In winter the body needs food/fuel more than summer, all those expended calories. You can endure or enjoy the experience the choice is yours.

Bring food with you and eat what you can catch, but have rations as a back up.

Does any one have a conversion for metric stuff?!

All joking aside, this is good thought. I have not yet began to think snow fires as I am still working on rain fires. Here in a week or so, I am adding a few more tools to the pack and will try it again.

I will probably leave for a small 3 days survival on the 3rd of January. On the 13th, I'll leave with different people, for a 2 days.
It's coming pretty fast, as you can see.
After revising multiple times my list of gear, I decided to bring a small axe: the trick of using standing dead trees seems like the easiest solution.
For food, I do intend on bringing enough oatmeal for the trip. I'm also bringing a lighter, a first aid kit, a head-lamp, etc. It's better to have everything you could possibly need even though you're not going to use it.
Now I am wondering: considering I still haven't succeeded at obtaining a coal with a bow-drill in a hot summer, I shouldn't count on it during winter right? How harder is it? I guess it must be extremely hard (that **darn**** thing in summer still is one ***heck*** of a challenge :P).

And any tips as of how I will get my food? Your best ways to trap hares, what else I could eat during this trip, should I count on ice-fishing, etc.?
I did try to do some trapping during this summer, once, and I must admit I failed miserably. I learned to better judge the size of animals based on their holes in the ground, though I am still unsure as of if they were small wild bunnies, or ground squirrels. At the very least, I know I had proper placement since most of my traps had been moved.

Good luck with the fire drill, I wouldn't stake my life on it. It's a good skill to learn, but in my opinion should only be a last resort. Bring a sure way of making fire. As far as food goes, if you plan on hunting and trapping, plan on being hungry. I would bring some food if I were you.

tsitenha

I know you are very eager to do this trip, and that's good
Do you have a hunting licence? Snaring without one is a bad idea, the QC fish and game take dimly on it.
Take into account the time of year, calories will be used up just standing there. Bring enough and more than just oatmeal, try bacon, sausages, eggs, potatos (and a fry pan), even peanut butter/jam assuming you are not allergic, etc...
Since you say you haven't succeded at snaring, fire making last summer I would definately bring the makings (matches, ferro rod, lighter, tinder) with you as a fall back plan.
Make this outing and the next few a learning proccess, build up your skills, then when your are realisticly competent try your self.
Along with the ax, bring a saw (swede style with large teeth, not an eguine:))

Rick
12-30-2011, 03:36 PM
I have to concur. With that list you are going to be hungry. You'll need more food than that. If you can legally procure game then fine but my guess is you'll have a lot more empty snares than full ones.

Unfortunately, the working schedule of my partner kind of ruined it and we'll only be able to spend one night and 2 whole days outside.

I do plan on bringing a lot of back-up gear just in case of any failure.

I do not have a license, but I am pretty confident I can trap without one on my own private property, right?

In any case of emergency, we will be very close to our car, or at the very least, our shack.

Well payne, every young man I have ever met seems to have a bottomless pit for a stomach.
My nephew, and hunting partner, started taking him with me when he was 13, would pick up a menu in a diner, and when the waitress asked him what he wanted, he would just hand it back and say, "Yes"....

Pack plenty of food, you gotta feed the machine......

Alright, decided to pack enough food to eat properly. :)

Now, I have a small question that might sound stupid: knowing that rain is water that we supposedly ready to drink as it is, and considering that snow is simply "solidified rain", does it mean that I will only need to melt the snow I take from the ground to obtain potable water? Or must I boil 5 minutes?

Rick
12-31-2011, 10:02 AM
If you capture the water off of something like your tent then just let the rain wash it a bit then capture the water directly off of it. The "bugs" come from the ground and surface water not the air. For snow, use clean surface snow that's more than a couple of inches deep. When you melt the snow be sure to add a small amount of water to your container before setting it on the fire. It takes a few seconds for the snow to melt and become liquid and you can scorch the bottom of your container if you don't add water. If you don't have water then just add a bit of snow, hold it close to warm the container and melt some of the snow. Then pack it full and you can place it on the fire.

You don't need to boil water for 5 minutes to sterilize it. That's just wasting fuel. Bringing it to a boil is sufficient to kill the nasties. Truth is they are dead before the 212F temp but since you don't have a thermometer to gauge the temperature bringing it to a boil just lets you know when you've reached the mark.

natertot

+1 on what Rick said.

My preference is to boil everything though. Birds fly high and sometimes they use the bathroom in flight. I don't want a little parasite to reach my insides and cause trouble. Boiling everything is just my liking.

Rick
12-31-2011, 10:22 AM
Birds don't usually fly during rain. Most are on roost some place safe. But that's why I suggested letting the rain wash the tent a bit. I know I lay stuff on the ground so it picks up anything that's on the ground. Allowing the rain to wash it will help clean it off. Bird doo on snow is usually spotted. (Get it? Bird doo, spotted?). Anywhoo. Boiling is the surest way to stay out of trouble.

1-rabbits are not considered a furbearing mammal so you can trap w/o a trapping licence but still need a small game licence.2-you had said that you and frends had built a large fire at -18 and stayed warm all night. let me say thats an awful lot of effert expending valuable energy. pick better bivoac sites. i rarely ever make a fire anymore, preferring to know i can survive w/o one is priceless even at -40, eat before you go to sleep, if you wake up cold eat again, also wrap your winter jacket around the fett outside of your sleeping bag.
remember a small fire sheltered and reflected properly and some small rocks heated will provide much warmth-with less cost of energy collecting said wood

We had nothing but sleeping bags, and a lighter. You say a proper shelter would've been better than having a huge fire all night? We had a 2-persons tent for the 4 of us, so initially, I proposed that we all spooned all night long thinking it was the warmest solution, but we ended up being so comfy around the fire that we all stayed there, surrounding it and placing our bikes and back-packs in order to block the wind.
I personally enjoyed watching the fire, and dead wood was extremely abundant.

I don't know how it works in Canada, but here, even on your own property you can't hunt something out of season and you need to have taken the course and have the license... I can't shoot a deer in June even if he is standing on my lawn eating my apple trees.

What is the best way to clean/sanitize your hands after skinning an animal if you don't have soap or anything of the likes? Would strong rubbing with water do the trick?

Rick
12-31-2011, 07:40 PM
Hygiene in the field is even more important than at home. Washing with water won't do it whether you've skinned an animal or used the bathroom. I carry Campsuds with me. You can use it for soap, toothpaste, washing clothes, bathing or cleaning pots and pans. If you don't have any kind of soap then find something with alcohol in it. Even those alcohol swab towelettes are better than plain water and they are very light to carry. They also serve as an easy way to start a fire.

Actually - mixing wood ash and water makes lye, which can be very caustic. Adding animal fat to the lye (overly simplified explanation) can yield soap.

I like the idea of using it to start a fire. Multi-use items are awesome. :)

I'm back. :)

We left the lodge at 10 in the morning, and hiked for at most 5 minutes before finding an awesome spot (proximity is a good thing, in case of emergency). As soon as we arrived, we started working: collecting wood and fir branches.
After having collected about half of what we would need, we decided to go set some traps: the earlier the better I guess.
We had only enough snare wire to set exactly 10 traps. Finding hares trails was excessively easy. However, finding one with high traffic is another thing. I found only 2 of those. My 3 other traps were set where a hare had passed through only once (single track in the snow). The next day, we came back to verify the traps: one of mine had moved and the loop had gotten smaller, so I guess my error was to make the loop just a bit too big. The loop was about 6 inches wide (diameter), and the bottom part of the loop was about 2 or 3 inches above the ground. At the end of the trip, we of course removed all the traps (that we had carefully flagged).
Observing the tracks was a real pleasure. I enjoyed following them, or trying to guess if they were running or just moving slowly around.

Unfortunately, my friend was too cold on the first night (-26C, not counting the humidex or wind factor) so we had to abandon at around 3 AM and return to the lodge.
I consider if I was alone, I would have made it through both nights. Only thing that would've gotten me: the lack of food.
Fortunately, I listened to you guys saying I should bring enough food to feed myself properly. :P

I realized a few things:
- A lighter doesn't work when it's too cold outside. Fortunately, I brought matches as well. The striking side of my match-box, however, wouldn't allow me to lit up the matches, so I was lucky my partner brought one as well.
- I probably needed twice as much of fir branches, though this improvised ground pad did very well.
- Since we started the fire at around 1 PM because we already needed to warm our feet and such, I forgot to think about the fact that we'd have to double the amount of wood we had collected to get us through the night. At 3 AM, we had no more wood. However, if we had decided to stay longer, we had plenty of dead standing trees right next to us.
- Didn't need any axe or saw: the dead standing trees can be broken super easily with bare hands.
- We should have built a rudimentary shelter: we probably lost a lot of heat because of that.
- Sleeping around the fire is warmer than spooning. (I thought the contrary.)
- Drink a lot of water. The next morning, I was dehydrated even though I drank the equivalent of 3 pots full of snow.
- It's pretty much impossible to cut snare wire with a knife. I had to use a scissor.

I was also happy to discover a type of leaf that was superbly waterproof and dry. You could easily peel off the ice that accumulated over them. They were perfect to start the fire. Also, those leaves were still on the trees (they didn't fall off for the winter), which was a great advantage as well I guess. I have no idea what kind of tree it was.

We brought a lot of equipment with us, just in case. However, in the end, we've used only those:
- Snare Wire (& Scissor)
- Sleeping Bag
- Pot
- Matches
Not too bad, in my opinion.
Question: What could I do to replace those items? (What would I have done if I didn't have them with me in a real situation?)

I liked the experience. I have already planned with a few other friends to return to our lodge this week-end for another experience of rustic winter camping. I added a funny twist to the trip though: we're going to have a hitch-hiking race! First to arrive to the lodge wins a chocolate bar. :P

Sounds like a "back yard" type trip, which is an excellent way to try out your skills, see what works and what doesn't.

Why don't you brain storm as far as what you used and what could be replacements, or what you could have done differently.......?

Seee what you come up with.

Rick
01-05-2012, 04:08 PM
If you are using 24-26 gauge wire you shouldn't need anything to cut it. Fold it in a loop where you want to cut it and pull the loop tight. This will put a kink in the wire. Grasp the wire on one side of the kink with one hand and the other side of the kink with the other hand. Holding the wire still on one side work it quickly back and forth on the other side. It should break fairly easily for you at the kink.

Hard to beat a sleeping bag in that kind of weather for staying warm. If you don't have one then there are several different shelters you can build both of debris and snow or you can stuff clothing with dry grass or leaves for insulation or all of the above. I would consider those last ditch choices in minus 0 weather.

You can heat rocks and use hot rocks to boil water trapped in a hollow log or rock depression. I gotta have me canteen cup though.

Instead of matches carry a fire steel and tinder and/or a Doan magnesium block. If you carry matches try to find strike anywhere matches so you don't have to rely on the striker pad on the box.

Hi Payne,

Here is few thoughts for you, hope they give you some ideas:

I realized a few things:
- A lighter doesn't work when it's too cold outside. Fortunately, I brought matches as well. The striking side of my match-box, however, wouldn't allow me to lit up the matches, so I was lucky my partner brought one as well.

Put several matchboxes to small plastic bags to be dry for use when needed and pack them to different places in your equipment. You can add some good tinder to be with each matchbox. Lighters work better if you remember to keep them in warm place before using :sailor: same goes for example with batteries / electronic devices.

Birch always burns well even icy and taking standing trees alive. Birch bark can be used as tinder like any other season. Axe and saw just makes things easier, like you noticed, at winter you need to have quite much of wood to burn.

- We should have built a rudimentary shelter: we probably lost a lot of heat because of that.
- Sleeping around the fire is warmer than spooning. (I thought the contrary.)

Sounds like you would have needed reflector for fire to stay warm better? Fast way to do it, is to use emergency blanket (thicker version better) and use it like wall behind you to reflect some warmth back from fire. If you want to combine reflector and easy, but pro shelter, put word Loue to Google pics to find old Scandinavian method for combined reflector and shelter.

Spooning is more emergency / survival trick when for example fire is not possible to make. Works well in those cases, but of course next to fire is much more nice to sleep at! If not inside snow shelter (excellent choice), shelters like tents / DIY ones are cold and wet at winter and used for more if weather itself gets very nasty.

- Drink a lot of water. The next morning, I was dehydrated even though I drank the equivalent of 3 pots full of snow.

Drinking a lot itself is not enough, you need to get salts /minerals too to stay hydrated. Might be that water (snow water is very pure) just went through you because it lacked salts / minerals.

- It's pretty much impossible to cut snare wire with a knife. I had to use a scissor.

Dont ruin good scissors mate! :D Use Leatherman etc. Those have several other good uses too!

No problems to start with some extra stuff, experience will make your bag lighter then. Here is my suggestions for replacements:

Snare Wire (& Scissor) = Just make sure that you have enough food with you already or try ice fishing.

Sleeping Bag = If no sleeping bag -> make fire -> If not possible keep moving or at least try to use insulators like spruce branches between you and snow and make emergency shelter inside the snow.

Pot = Welcome to world of bushcraft! Im sure you can find a lot of ideas if browsing through different bushcraft sites / tutorials!

Matches = When we talk about winter with lot of snow and really cold, you have to be prepared for it. If no matches / other modern way to make fire available then fire will be very hard to make and takes you lot of preparations and skills to master. Also in real situation, you have to keep in mind several priorities and have plan Bs because winter is not forgiving environment if for example making fire fails.

Arto

Thanks for that, Artzi.

I couldn't find anything relevant while searching for "Loue", though.

If you have deep snow, a snow shelter is the way to go. It is a lot of work, you get wet, but once the shelter is constructed, it is probably the warmest shelter you can build. A large candle and body heat will keep it well above freezing inside!

A lean-to covered with snow and facing a fire isn't good enough?

Dude that's good enough if it's what you want, no problem. But it would be a heck of a lot warmer in a snow shelter. I suppose if you were just there 1 or 2 nights, the effort may not be worth it depending on the temperature. But if the temps were well below zero and you were on an extended stay, I personally would rather have a snow shelter. I love survival but I like to be as comfortable as possible when the opportunity presents itself! 100,000 Eskimo's couldn't be wrong...........could they????

yes, payne, a lean-to in your temperature would be fine. The usual problem for a lean-to is that they are too flat and leak when it warms up. They are easy to tarp. Just remember that snow and ice accumulate and get heavier as the winter goes by. So...make sure you aren't building a deadfall for yourself.
