I picked up a couple of pairs of military Telemark skis with skins. Two pair for $20 and they look new or lightly used. This was probably one of my dumber ideas but I thought for $20 with skins it had to be a deal. Right? The distributor advertised them as Swiss but it says Made in Switzerland on them so what do I know? The brand name is Fritschi but maybe that's just the binding.

I should point out that I've never, ever skied on snow. I haven't the foggiest idea about it. But I have these really heavy skis that arrived today and I'm going to "dry fit" them tomorrow. Since these are military my understanding is any boot with a toe and heal welt will work. (big ? here)

Does anyone have a pair of these? Any tips you care to share like how to put them on? Oh, and maybe how to take them off. That would be good, too. I'd be happy to start with that.

Did a lot of down hill skiing, but no experience with cross country skis.

Been skiing one time, never hurts so bad in my life till then. It was down hill though, but I couldn't walk right for a week...

Didn't you just have knee surgery? I would love to have seen your wife's reaction when you brought these home.... LOL

Not sure how you put them on but, don't they usually come off automatically when you crash?

I guess I should point out there will be no downhill stuff. Not on purpose anyway. I just want to mush around here on flat ground. Stay tuned. If I figure them out they may be for sale for just the shipping after I use them the first ime. :bored:

I think skis stacked by the door of the Lodge, while you are sipping hot toddies in your cast, with all the ski bunnies, in the hot tub.......is the way to go....But that is just me.

Moving right along. As it turns out, these things can be set up for touring or downhill and can be switched rather easily. Not necessarily quickly but easily. I'm actually quite impressed with them. The binding is a Fritschi FT88 Backcountry Skiing Alpine Touring Binding, which they started producing around 1982. They made a civilian version and a military version and the only difference is the color. The military version is white.

I've tried a few different style boots in the bindings to see if they would work and if so, how well.

I have a pair of Austrian Combat boots that are the cats meow. Incredibly well made and durable. They do work but not as well as I would like. I could use them if I had to.

Columbia -50 boots. Nada.

Vasque Sundowners. Another Nada.

I think I'll look around for a pair of Telemark Ski Boots (inexpensive of course).

If you like to ski and don't want to invest a lot of money in a pair of skis or if you live in a place where they could be used for bug out then I would have to give them a thumbs up. They are heavy but the for the price I can live with it. Just be choosy on the boots you use in the bindings.

If anyone has a pair and needs help with the set up let me know. It took a bit of experimenting and quite a bit of research to figure them out but once you understand how they work they are easy peasy.

I'll look around for some boots and update if I can find some....cheap.

1. Quick release heel lever
2. Screw type adjustment for tension spring. You can adjust it to just kick the skis off if you choose. 3 is maximum tight, 10 is loose.
3. By pulling forward on the toe bracket you can release the foot plate and convert to touring mode. That allows your heel to move freely.
4. Or you can leave the plate locked down for downhill skiing.
5. Wire heel lifters. It's the bent wire you see under the number 5. It can be rotated beneath the heal in touring mode so that your heel is always elevated. I assume this is used in uphill to keep you level (?) and reduce strain on your legs. (shrug)
6. Climbing skins or Uphill skins. For those that don't know what they are they are sort of like carpet with the pile pointing backwards. As you ski forward the fibers of the skins lay flat. If you start to move backward the fibers open up and catch the snow, which stops you from moving backward.
7. The front attachment for tethers. The skis come with tethers that loop around your boot so if you wipe out the skis stay with you instead of continuing on down the hill.

There's a flood of them on the market. You can find them just about anywhere for around $20 bucks. I guess the military changed styles and all of these are the old style.

There were no tsunami warnings issued with my landing.

Keep a pair by the front door and another by the back. You never know.

Rick,

As a certified ski technician, I'll give you some advice. Don't ever ride those ski's without having them looked at. The setting on the bindings (DIN) are based on several factors: age, weight, height and skier type. You can adjust these settings on your own if you know what you are doing, but I suggest taking them into a shop and having them looked at if you have no idea what to do. As far as you know, they might not even work or be safe to ride. Try and post some pictures and I can help you out a bit. I'd just like to see what kind of condition they are in.

I appreciate the help but they are not going to be careening downhill with me on them. I just got them to play around here in the snow. All flat land, streets and fields. About the worst that could happen is the spring in the adjuster come out and hit me in the eye.

One thing that I have been meaning to do is get into cross country skiing. That way, when my dog is pulling my sled, then she can pull me a bit as well, and I won't have to walk so dang fast to keep up.
