What keeps you living where you currently live...??? Would you move if you could have the same quality of life some place safer.....??? Now clearly this question is intended for those living in a large urban area.

Where I live is based entirely on my work. The company I work for has so far ridden out the storm while the competition has been going toes up, the owners are rare honest men that have gone paycheckless to meet payroll rather than lay off guys. If they decided to move out of this state, I'd go with them in an instant. Otherwise, I have simple needs, dislike urban areas and states that punish their law-abiding citizens with convoluted laws that the criminals just ignore anyway. If the company would move just a half hour north, I could move to NH with the same commute! :)

Not really SD. Someone could well think our weather and bears wandering around as unsafe and suggest we move to a nice safe subdivision outside of cleveland.

Not me. I'm happy where I am. Close to kids and grand kids. 30 minutes from doing anything I want from live theater to a romantic dinner to the grand kids at the zoo, museums, AAA baseball. Anyone that wants to be armed can be. I can't ever remember a break in around here and that's over 20 years. Not many places safer than that. 13,000 acres of pristine wilderness about an hour away.

I would rather live in a shack in a rural area than live in the city and brag about my good paying job. I have to admit that I have lived in a shack but have never lived in a city, driving through was enough. It's getting too populated around my area, although it has slacked off a bit. I was thinking about moving to north dakota or at least further north. The last home invasion was done by a city fella as most are, he received a 22 mag to the shoulder for the trouble.

Believe it or not, we've never felt safer day to day, than we do here and now.
We are here primarily because of our careers. We could have had jobs in smaller places (where we came from), maybe perceived by most as safer, but to us, this is the pinnacle. Kinda like the Green Berets, or the Navy Seals of our respective professions. It's like climbing the tallest mountain or sailing alone around the world. It's a personal challenge that I know many can relate to in their own way because of where they've chosen to be.
We love what we do, and we want to do it in the best place possible. Money is secondary, it's not what motivates us. But being financially secure and self reliant is huge. And amazingly enough, the two go hand in hand. Plus, we like it here. Not everything, of course, bud the good is way gooder than the bad. Waaay!
All things being equal (of course there's nothing equal to NYC), don't know where we'd go that would be ideal in every way. I know that we're happy when we're skiing in Utah, or hiking in Wyoming or hanging around with family down south.
But boy, are we ever thrilled when we finally cab it back across that bridge and get a glimpse of the Empire state building and the Chrysler building and the NY skyline and know that we're home, as imperfect as it is. It is our habitat, after all.

We prepare for WSHTF but not to the exclusion of living day to day.

I'm sure you've been in the city when it's been closed down due to snow. The silence is deafening and the contrast is incredible. Were you in the city on 9-11? Also just think about if some other disaster strikes, how safe will you be/feel?

No such thing as a truly safe place to live, anywhere you go is subject to natural disaster, crime, or even accidents.
Now to answer your question, I've lived in big cities and I hate them. Mostly it is the traffic and how long it takes to get to and from work and the fact I'm not near woods or nature. Cities offer me no peace of mind or the tranquil beauty of following a stream through the woods knowing no one is around.

Remember, the things we fear most are the things we can't control.

Im happy where we're at atm. Ive lived in town and the only things i miss are the bookstore and pizza delivery. Id much rather have my guns, horses and peace and quiet. Now if only the city folk would not try to move out here and bring thier city laws with them....

Beg to disagree. The things we fear most are in our minds. The things we can't control should cause no fear at all. I can't control tornadoes, or blizzards or heat waves or chemical tanker crash or meth labs but they are all real possibilities where I live. It's the thoughts we have about "things" that causes us fear. Just like it's the thoughts we have about "things" that causes us anger. Fear is an emotion and we can control those if we take responsibility for them. We really are our own worst enemy.

Personally, I've always wanted to live in the Poy. I have a few laws I think those folks could use.

I call it that cuz, you see weird things in the sky at night, military jets and helicopters flying lower than they should be during the day. cell service is spotty, strange sounds at night, bears and cougars pass through, etc. Im waiting for the SyFy channel to do a show here lol

I've been in a city for a day several times and that was enough for me. I don't need to live in a city for three weeks to come to my conclusion. I'm sorry but I do not like it and after three weeks living there I'm quite sure I would still not like it. I love greens so it's likely I would like spinach, which I do. Cheese momos I'm not sure about. I'm not real fond of cheese but I'll give them a try once maybe twice but not for three weeks LOL.

I've been here 23 years. The longest I've lived anywhere.
Wasn't here for THE garbage strike but was here for the 48hrs eastern seaboard grid down/lights out, 9/11 (watched it live from my 35th floor office window), and all sorts of major and minor aggravations.

In a major SHTF scenario I know I'd prefer to be in Dubois, WY (love that place!), but I can't justify moving there just in case. It's a luxury I can't afford and it's no guarantee, anyway, that I'll be spared from God knows what.
I prepare to the best of my abilities but I am not going to let it rule my life. It's much too short for that.

Its a loaded question for sure , I lived in Salt Lake City ,Los Angeles and San Diego (down town) , city life is awesome , sure you cant hunt (much) , but think about it , if you work downtown say in like SD , Everything you need is right there , grocery stores, clubs, bars, restaraunts , everything is there , I will say you can get caught up really quick , the thing is as Ive gotten older , I relaxed a little more, cities are generally stricter for safety concerns and probably rightly so! I live an hour from a major city now, on a lake , with plenty of fishing , hunting , and wilderness! Many pitfalls living outside , when it snows your on your own , same with many emergencies! But I would rather live "freer" here than in the city!

I can't say I am in an "unsafe" location. Both at home and in my work trailer though, I am close to a major freeway (and am in between major cities). I really don't see moving from either place to do job and family. I like where I live, and I like where I work. In both places I am a part of the community (abet a minimal part due to my travel from work to home).

The obvious answer is to pick out where you want to live, providing you have to bucks to be able to do it, then move there........Or have more than one "Place" to live at.

Just be careful what you wish for, all the glitters is not always gold.

While Jacksonville is pretty good sized - over 840 square miles and about 1 million or so, it often feels like living in Hooterville. While I don't live downtown which is what most would call the city, I only live a few miles away. I can say with a certainty that if I did not feel safe here I would move.

An insight has finally dawned on me that has been ricocheting in the periphery of my brain. And it's been bugging me for awhile, now.
Why is it, that there's always so much more understanding for those who enlist and serve in dangerous places (working for money, btw) but not those who end up working and living in less desirable places from what y'all deem them to be? Chasing a paycheck, someone said; horror of horrors!
Let's face it. None of us are volunteering. (that would certainly level the playing field) We are merely trying to make a living the best way we know how, given our abilities, education and interests. We have choices; and as long as we have not been drafted against our will into a lifestyle, we have to own the consequences, good or bad.
Maybe I'm not risking my life to defend our borders but I'm paying for it in spades. Putting in more than I'm taking out, or ever have. No complaints, no scamming the system, no taking advantage of loopholes or perks. I don't expect a thank you for pulling more than your weight but I do expect to be treated fairly and on my own merit.

I happen to agree with you. There is nothing wrong with someone making a good living. If you can manage that AND do something you truly enjoy then you've got it made in spades. I was fortunate to have a job I truly enjoyed and spent 30 years at it. But I think I would have enjoyed just about any job I did because that's just who I am. I tend to see the positive things and minimize the negatives. I know folks who barely make a living and are happy as larks. I know folks that own some serious wealth and are happy as larks. It's not about how much you make it's about who you are as a person.

I heard a saying a long time ago that I have always remembered. You can change the ground under your feet but never the sky over your head. For those of you that don't understand it what it means is you can move from place to place but your troubles will always follow you. It's about who you are as a person. Matters not a whit where you live or what you do.

I wasn't the person that invented the old " I live in the city because that's where the money is". I've heard that from many a city dweller. That and they can't give up the night life. That's ok but it is what has been told to me.

I agree with all of you who say define safer. I live not far from B, on an Island with more people than a lot of states have total residents. So yeah, there are a lot of instances that can be considered dangerous.

However, in my town are two hospitals, with another one no more than 15 minutes away. Each specialize in different areas. So you say you're safer in the middle of nowhere if the SHTF, and I say I'm safer when it comes to 99.999999999% of the things that can happen every day. I have stores open 24/7 for supplies for the everyday emergency, no worrying about the weather not letting in supplies like Nome is facing right now with fuel supplies.

And to add to JP's post, I can walk my a$$ over to 3 of the best hospitals in... the... world.
Daz right. Walk. Hospitals where people fly in from all over the globe to get a second opinion from. Or get treated, when push comes to shove.
I can get food delivered for free from any restaurant or grocery store. Pharmacies open 24/7. Cabs to take you anywhere you want to go at 4am. Doormen to keep unwanted visitors at bay. Just for starters.
Not too bad when you stop to think about it.

I think it all depends on what "you" think is safe. Where we live now I believe to be safe, but my wife doesn't feel safe. We live in a nice neighborhood, but just outside of that is a bit ghetto you could say. Now there have been no serious crimes here or anything, but she just doesn't feel safe. Back in Indiana where I grew up I felt very ssafe. So safe in fact I never locked my doors. The same was true in Alaska, of course that was on Base. I've never been to NYC, but I know I do not want to live there. Not because of fear, I just hate the crowds. It's almost too crowded here for me. Luckily we have just started the process of buying a new house in a better area where my wife feels safer. We should close in a few months. So sourdough we did what you said, we moved to a safer place. :)

Actually, I don't like crowds either; but in a way they offer a dose of anonymity that small towns and burbs don't. I can blend in and maneuver around them if I have to, and yet there are also places to get away. I love being able to walk everywhere. I love the fact that I live on a high floor with 24/7 doorman and elevator man. No one can come up unannounced. If by some miracle they get past the doorman they can't go up without the elevator man taking them up. When deliveries are made, the staff waits to take the delivery people back down. Cameras are everywhere including the elevators.
And if someone tries to make it through all the obstacles and attempts to break into my apt., they'll have a helluva time dealing with pre-war steel doors and frame, not to mention all sorts of locks. And ultimately, they'd have to face me, with a frying pan in one hand and a stiletto shoe in the other. Seriously, I feel safer here, than when we lived in a house and a regular neighborhood in a town down south. Plus, there are cops everywhere.
Now in a serious disaster there would be major challenges, no doubt about it, because this also happens to be an island.
But every location has it's challenges and some people might do better in certain settings than others. This is something I know and understand.

Its all relative. Cities are nice for convienance, and luxuries. The sticks are nice for space, clean air, and privacy (outside). I get social anxiety even after living in SoCal for an even decade. But this is where my wife is from and her emotional support (mom) since Im gone 3 out of 4 wks a month. Which is how I deal with it since Ive been out of the Corps. Were moving back north in a year so I can be home more. Also so I have a better chance of getting a job as a forester, and she can do her nursing thing (eww people)
