Seems we have some experts, around here.....so my question is how long do Zombies last?
The titles are like "NIGHT of the Living Dead'....So morning comes they go away?
Been a thread on safe houses....wait them out?...how long?....live on the river?...in a castle?....destroy every one you see?
So if they don't get their daily requirement of brains, ( bad thing to live or be dead on, as they seem to be in short supply) how long will they last?
Expecting them to start melting down in a length of time?....Are we talking day?...Week?...Month?.....Indefinanty?....Do they gotta be destroyed?
I mean, seriously, what is the PLAN?

In a bug in situation and the zombies are left to their own devices without food, I would say a couple of months. Given a living person can last around 3 weeks without food, the undead zombies would have that many calories stored up, then could breakdown their own bodies further for energy. I would place a piece of meat in a sealed jar and when it has rotted to nothing, I woulod figure the zombies would be in the same state or worse given maggots eating them away.

I think it would depend on the zombies. From the movies I've seen, some of the zombies can or will infect animals while others do not. Let's hope it's the latter.

Flame throwers use fuel, but how much?.....Maybe over kill (kill?LOL) on a small group?....Or wait till they bunch up?..(Think "flock shooting").
Yeah, I know in the movies, there is unlimited amount of fuel....and because I have never owner or had a use for a flame thrower, how much fuel can you carry?

I don't watch zombie movies, so just trying to get a handle on this subject.
How long does the 'scenario in the movies last? What is the favorite out-come?....Does everyone live happily ever after?
Then you have to consider..... if it dies the second time does it stay that way or become a Zombie-zombie.....?

Thanks for the offer, I really don't watch many movies anymore...except old ones it seems.
I was just kinda doing a "what if..."seeing as how we had a couple of threads on them lately.
And there seems to be a lot of general interest, as well.
I have to agree with Lady B on finding it flabbergasting on the amount of interest, movies, programming and such........Maybe we all want to take our minds off all the crape going on in the world by doing a fantasy thing?
Anyway it was kinda fun, do kinda like the flame thrower.

I've always like sci fi movies. Yeah, I was a Trekkie. Still am at heart. War of the Worlds and all of them. The Thing. Them. It. Us. You. Me. Lot's of sci fis. I think zombies are just an extension of that. I bit of light hearted fun. Nothing more.

Up here zombies are big fun. We have a safe house, we have a comic book store that advertises on tv about their zombie survival equipment, we have meetings, and zombie walks. Eh, we have to have something to entertain us in the winter. Besides, when the Zombie Survival Guide came out, my 13 year old son taught himself how to use the inter library loan program so he could get it. He sat down and read it through. It's not a small book. Anything that can get a 13 year old boy to read like that is ok by me.
Yeah, but most of the zombies up there are just regular folks that are frost bitten. They won't be able to move their fingers till they warm up a bit let alone bite you.

I was just bored tonite, and got to wondering.......What is/was the end game....seems you gotta just keep destroying them.....?

When I was a kid, the round house at the rail road yard was gonna be blown up, had windows all the way around...thousands of them.
The crew ask us kids if we wanted to break some windows....heaven right?
Well, after using up all the BB's I had for my Daisy, shooting windows, then breaking them wait my ball bat, even hitting the windows at a cross piece,...to break 4 at a time....finally had to give up...too tired to go on...hadn't even made a dent in all those windows.
Just too many to deal with...we are dooooomed!

Hmm, it depends. The new age of zombies tend to be a virus, so I would imagine they would last until the body breaks down and rots away. Classical zombies is bad joo joo, so they are immortal unless killed in the specified way(s).
Personally, I would subscribe to kill them all. Though I would try to trap one and chain it up to see how long it could live for without anything.
As for why zombies. It's fun.

I am proud of the place in history New Amsterdam/NYC/Big Apple/Gotham occupies and the sacrifices it's residents have made. I thinking that simply the number of people would an advantage to the fast........of course depending on the number of zombies your dealing with.
Would the be a target percentage? Say 10% in proportion? (pick a number)....so if your dealing with a rural area with 1000 people vs NYC with what 8 mil....it would be 100 vs 1mil +/- a couple of hundred thousands......Man, That's a LOT of zombies......
Which bring me back to my original question....How long do they last?......Do you prep for zombies based of 72 hrs......2 week....6 mo....forever.
Are they melting down or replenishing them selves, (catching the virus or what ever?),..... Are we dealing with different kinds?

I finally have this thing figured out. I won't bore you with the equation. It's massive. Just think 3rd grade algebra on a huge scale. I also placed a few phone calls to WHO, CDC, WHAT, FBI, WHEN, NLS, WHERE and HOW. As it turns out, the Zombie brain isn't the real problem. The real problem is the Zombie brain stem. The brain stem controls all the baser functions like biting whereas the brain performs higher functions such as art. Since there aren't many zombie artists or musicians we can safely conclude that it is the brain stem that is in charge.
Now to the question of longevity. This becomes even more complex (5th grade algebra!). When the human body dies the bacteria in the gut releases gases and the result is bloat. Since we've never seen 'sploded zombies we also have to conclude the virus attacks the bacteria in the gut and kills them. Hence, no bloat and no 'splosions. Further, some means of circulation must be present in order to feed the muscles of the body. Since a normal person would bleed out from most of the wounds we've seen zombies endure we also have to conclude that 1). the virus has some method of cauterizing wounds perhaps by acidic secretions or 2) It has learned how to do an end around and feeds the muscles through the lymphatic system. As to providing oxygen, tests performed by the WHERE proved the virus is capable of transporting oxygen so it's assumed that's the mechanism employed.
The final answer is FOREVER for $200 Alex. Viruses are known to go into hibernation and would do so if food were no longer available. The zombie would go into a dormant state until food become available (Hey! Look! A dead Zombie. Aaaarghh) or the virus found another host (eaten by another zombie). Further, the HOW found that the virus also creates a glycol like substance that it can deliver throughout the zombie's body which will prevent them from freezing.
Give me 6 more cases of MREs please. No, make that 10.

Not to get too off the target but I asked this before about the situation , if you take the zombies out of the scenario ,the threat could be viral , it could be something the government manufactured that went rogue (any government) , , inner city , I dont know if just because you are from the city your worse off than those outside , obviously more of the supply houses will be inside the city and that means better medical as well! So be outside might not be as good . Personally Ill take my chances OUTSIDE the big city!

It's quite easy to believe that a drug could be released to the public immediately that could cause very bad side effects.
Especially one that could cure cancer.
I mean let's face it.A lot of drug commercial on TV end with.
Could cause blah....blah.....blah.....zombieism.

I would like to see your sources on this one. We had all kinds of contracts with the government and there were no "back doors". Back doors allow anyone in, not just the government. It's a whole lot easier to assign folks actual logins and provide them the security they need than to leave "back doors" available. It's simply not done. You give them access like any other employee. I could sit at home and monitor phone conversations 200 miles away and the only way anyone knew I was there was by my login. It's a whole lot easier than you're trying to make it.
But there a facilities that biomedical researchers use that if they are not "top secret" than why are they on the outskirts of large cities and have large fences with concertina wire draped around them , why do these facilities have security forces which rival large police forces?
Living in a city that has one of the largest (Eli Lilly) I can assure you they are not on the outskirts of town. They don't have concertina wire around the place or jackboot security. The are located inside our beltway, have a really nice office complex and their security wears suits. I would bet dollars to donuts they are pretty well trained but companies don't want to look like a target. They want to blend in.

I don't understand your point here. Would you prefer our nuclear facilities be unprotected?
As to the Smithsonian, no I don't think it's strange. They are protecting FEDERAL property not policing a town. They are protecting the national treasures of the United States. Things like the Constitution, Flags that have flown in historic places, irreplaceable artifacts that define our history and who we are as a people. If I had a choice of protecting a politician or a crackhead in Washington, D.C. and the U.S. flag that flew over Ft. McHenry, I'd have to go for the flag. I'd give the crackhead some consideration, though.
If you are curious, there are 850 officers that protect all of the museums and research facilities in Washington, D.C. (that's a lot of dang stuff if you've ever been there), the environmental research center in Maryland as well as the Smithsonian Facility in Panama.

Well, Rick there goes our flame throwers......not supposed to set them on fire.......But then again if I'm on my boat, or in a tank, maybe still an option?
Well who would set them on fire and just stand there? You have to be backin' up long enough for their feet and hands to burn off. Then you can pop a cold one and just sit and warm yourself by the fire. If they can't walk or crawl they can't be much of a threat.
I don't know about decapitation either. The last thing you need are a bunch of unattached heads laying around snappin' like an alligator. Those that have really big ears might learn to crawl!
That old boy needs to take Zombie 101 over again.
