Ok ,this has probably been covered but I gotta say , for a "bug out" bag there are many combos that make sense , of course I have 2 bug out bags that make sense , the first one is the .40 SW with a Glock 22 sidearm and and the KelTec Sub 2000. Now the main reason I really like this is combo is that not only do they use the same caliber they have the same grip and interchange magazines , you can also get this combo in Smith & Wesson , Berretta as well ,also in the 9mm !

2nd the Polish PPS3C and Tokarav , now technically the pps is a pistol , but the overall length is alot longer than any pistol Ive ever used , it does have a folding stock (its been tack welded shut , you open it and the atf finds out you go to jail, pay the tax and sbr it and your fine, with that said ,when all hell breaks out you gonna be worried about the atf?) ,but really you dont even need the folding stock it fires fine without it , both the Tokarav and PPS shoot the 7.62x25 caliber , which is a pretty nice round actually , both guns fire excellent , rounds are cheap as well which you find is not the case with the .40SW !

I may make a similiar bag with a .22 pistol and a Marlin camp rifle (but I have not .22 pistol or Marlin Camp rifle!!! So it will have to wait until then!

I truly believe one caliber ,multiple guns is the way to go !

I have to disagree, different tools for different jobs........
Like having a tool box with nothing but 9/16 open end wrenches.

I see your logic, one ammo, no fumbling around, but IMHO poor reason for carrying basically the same tool.

That being said, now redundent calibers in different configerations not a bad idea, as far as spares, spare parts, stocking ammo and for reloading reasons.

All the armies of the world and all the cowboys out west abandoned this philosophy a long time ago.

There was a reason for that decision, as Hunter just stated. Using a pistol cartridge in a long gun does not instantly give you long range firepower, it simply gives you a slightly more accurate and much larger pistol.

true , but Im not going into a fight without all my tools , this just gives me a ways to a mean in other words I can take the same ammo and lots of it with me , you'd be surprised how accurate that KelTec is at a distance ,obviously I would want a rifle caliber , but in order to carry relatively concealed and trust me if you have a cheap kids backpack you can put a keltec sub 2000 and a glock 22 and and as much ammo as you can carry in it and walk into any store on the planet and nobody would notice anything out of the ordinary , try that with your AR? No with an AK I can do this ! Bit I dont have a draco ,hey thats a good idea!!!

OK, here is the problem with pistol caliber pistol/carbine combos. If you are talking about an auto pistol caliber ie. 9mm, .40 or .45acp them you get maybe 200 to 300 more FPS out of the carbine. If you are talking about revolver magnum rounds ie. .357, .41mag or .44mag then you can see any where from 35% to 40% increase in velocity out of a carbine barrel as compared to a 6 inch barreled revolver.
So although you get a longer sight radius, you really don't get much else from the rimless pistol rounds.

If you can carry all your tools into a fight you do not have a big enough selection!

Besides, you are squirreled away in a bunker, complete with toilet, never to see daylight again, why do you need firepower?

Everyone here so far has had valid points IMO. Here is the thing, you can't prepare for everything or else your BOB would be the size of a Chevy Z71. The idea is to get you to safety and to cover a few basic needs while still remain portable. Depending on who you are and where you live, there will be variations in the set up. Here's my take. If you live in the city and need to get out, obviously your main concern would be mobs of people or "bad guys" in your way from reaching your safe zone. Firepower is probably what your gonna need to get out (such as 9mm pistol/.223 carbine). Once "out there" your gonna need to have tools not just to protect you but also to feed you (such as a 9mm, .357 pistols /.22 rifle, 12 guage long arms). Soooooo, to sum it up, IMO you need a lil' bit of it all. There really is not one set up to do it all. The best compromise in my mind would be a .357 revolver/carbine with a very accurate .22 pistol stashed away. Let's face it, a .357 carbine does in fact offer adequate firepower for most situations. The pistol/carbine can protect you well from people and the .22 pistol is a fine critter getter. That .357 carbine will also do very well on medium size animals for food. Think about your most likely scenario and prepare accordingly.

I get that it's your opinion so it's as valid as anything else. Let me just say that there is no example in U.S. history where mobs of bad guys have been the problem. Isolated instances, yes, but not roving hoards. Instead, the biggest threat to getting out of Dodge has been flood water, downed trees and other debris. Instead of worrying about which caliber is correct perhaps we should focus on the right chain saw, come alongs, and winches and a good map of multiple routes.

I personally prefer a gun that can shoot multiple calibers. It is kind of the reason I like revolvers (.38 & .357, .41special & .41 Mag, .44special & .44Mag) . It is also one of the reasons I bought my H&K-4 (shoots .22lr, .25acp, .32acp and .380) and the LMT upper for my AR. Pull 2 bolts out and the barrel comes out (.223, 7.62x40WT, 300Blackout) . These are just some of the calibers available that don't need the bolt to be changed out and the same magazines can be used.

I can tell you through personal experience in Hurricane Katrina, there were most certainly instances of groups of bad guys fireing on police and other civilians. Call witness, Det. Glockcop, to the bench. I guess it all depends on your definition of a "MOB". A riot consisting of hundreds of people in my opinion is a "mob". The Superdome and the surrounding area of the city fell victim to hundreds of rioters intent on destruction and rape. There were also many smaller groups of felons/rioters peppered throughout the city intent on the same. Since ''documentation'' is gold and "it's never been a problem", I still will not stand in the middle of a field in the middle of a lightning storm even though my chances of getting struck are slim. Good point on the chain saws and come alongs. I could have used a few of them at the time too.

Yes, there was ALOT of looting going on but there were groups (some not so small) through out the area intent on taking what others had, be it food, water, property or panties. They were the real problem for the police and the good citizens. This also took place in the outlaying suburbs of N.O. that were also desimated by the hurricane. I would bet that the unfortunate victims wished they had a good 9mm or .357 to get them through that mess. After all, when TSHTF you have to be ready to save yourself from all kinds of dangers including other people, the trashed environment, packs of domestic dogs turned feral, injury, hunger, thurst, ect. As you have pointed out, tools (chain saws/come alongs/winches) are pretty important too. more than a few lives could have been saved with a simple axe in the attic. Not to sound dramatic but it's a simple fact that I and many others may not be here today if we were unarmed during Katrina. Next time I'll have some better tools on hand too. Excellent point, Rick.

As a side note, I personally had NO PART in disarming law abiding citizens. That was rediculous and I had no intention of participating in such unforgivable treachery against the citizens I swore to protect.

Oh yeah. combo rifle pistol rounds.

The fn 5.7 is getting close to this being a "good" idea.

I wouldn't feel under armed with a 357 wheelgun and and lever 357.

OR, any combo of subcal carbine an reliable pistol.

I'm talking BO stuff though. I have nowhere to bugout to so I don't prep for it.

IMO, an AR carbine is still the most bang for the buck. I'm looking at building one as a super simple, super lightweight, errr, camping gun I guess. Hiking gun maybe.

My target weight is 5 lbs with loading 20rd mag.

I got my rossi 44 mag lever to day as a stable mate to my SBH. the rifle gives me a little more reach for rifle counties, while the SBH works for slug gun/handgun only counties (or zones, if you will)

and ya dont have to search for other rounds , the premise is to keep it simple , the main reason I got my sub 2000 and glock 22 , i have one kind of round , if your family comes with ya they can take either out of the bag and not worry "do I have the right ammo for the job" , trust me in an emergency you will fumble, if the ammos the same you will not fumble as bad!

I like the 44 lever /SBH great combo right there!

Im here to tell you though the Keltec /glock combo goes even closer (glockcop you need this combo,it also comes in glock17 grips) ,not only is it the same round its the same magazines , doesnt get any better than that , your kids ,the old lady no confusion when things get tough and the keltec is fine for small game hunting and the round is big enough to ward off bigger predators , bears ,coyotes,wolves, mountain lions and humans!!

I have the Sub 2000 with Glock 19 grips and the big boy magazines. I like mine, too.

19 grips (same thing) , do you have the 31 round mag? I got a couple of the 31 rounds for the .40 and it takes a quite bit of work to get 31 rounds in them , as a matter of fact at the present time I can only get 27 rounds inside !

Yes and yes. I have several of the 31 round mags. I use a loader for them. I've tried to follow this advice in my own approach. I have a decent sized family so calibers are distributed between members with an attempt to keep like calibers together when possible. But across the family I have a range of calibers that are affective at long range all the way down to shotgun range. That offers up a lot of flexibility with minimum confusion looking for the right caliber as you said. I didn't do that for the shotgun man, of course or the long range calibers but the in betweens worked out very well. I'd still like to get a long gun for .357, which I don't have.
