View Full Version : Today's Survival Skills
I've read a number of posts of late by some our senior members (I'm including myself in that group) that talk about the difficulties of surviving as you get older. I've given this quite a bit of thought so I'm posting this for the younger members on here in hopes that it will help them make some right choices for their future. I make no claim to be right just that I've seen what wrong choices can do. If you are below 35 then this post is directed at you. Please give it some thought.
1. We are in a terrible job market. It has happened time after time and we've seen population migrations from one geographic region to another because jobs change location all the time based on a myriad of factors. Moving may be something you might have to do.
2. Recognize that ideals are wonderful things but the reality is you have to have benefits along with salary. Nothing is more important than medical insurance. You might not think you need it but you are only one accident or illness away from total financial ruin if you do not have it. Your child's life or the life of your spouse may well hinge on whether or not you have medical insurance. Look for a job that has both benefits and salary. They really are out there but they might not be available where you live.
3. Invest in something. If your company has a 401K plan then please take advantage of it. It's the best investment vehicle available today. The company generally matches some level of contribution, usually up to 6% so you'll want to invest at that level to get the best benefit. Even if you have to start investing at 2% and increase your investment each time you get a raise, do it. The brutal reality is that nothing has really changed despite the economic downturn. When you retire you will probably only have social security and any money you are able to save. If you are very lucky your company will offer a pension but more and more companies are not offering them today. You can still build a 401k that will be worth over $1 million when you retire. Savings account, IRAs and saving bonds do NOT keep pace with inflation. You actually lose money investing in them. The same is true if you stash your money under the mattress.
I don't want to drag this on and on. My point is simply that you need to make a plan for yourself and your family. Don't just accept your lot in life unless your lot includes those things I've listed above and you're happy with where you are. If you are not then develop a plan to get there. It will be far too late if you wake up at 70 and find you don't have the money to live and no medical benefits for when you get sick.
It is a good idea to talk to a financial advisor or two early in your marriage or life. They can adjust your plan to meet your personal goals for life. A little saved early is usually better than a lot saved late.

And may I add, invest in your health early on. Get into some good habits and don't get distracted. Good health will give you independence well into your old age and put money in your pocket. And you're the only one who can make it happen.

Good post.
Some how I/we seem to have followed this advice, don't really know where it came from, from a young age.....I guess it was just something we learned from our parents?.....or an interest in being independent?, your "wilderness' can be located anywhere,..... it's idea of self sufficiency, and working toward it.
Yes, yes, and yes to all three of you. I just want folks to understand that survival is more than being able to start a fire in the woods. You also have to have the skills to adapt and survive day-to-day. I tell my kids that you either control your money or it will control you and there is no in between.

Excellent points all. Just to tie the two trains of thought together - If you plan and save wisely you will have a financially secure future. If you do not take care of your health you will be able to afford the deluxe walker. Both aspects are important. Good posts everybody.

I don't know if my age is known or not, but I am about to turn 27. Although I am young, I agree completely with you guys already. My grandfather worked for a phone company his entire life after getting out of the Marines in 1953 and my grandmother worked misc office jobs off and on during her life. They were able to adopt and care for both their children and retire as multi-millionaires. After having many discussions with them, and through training I received to teach a course called "Financial Peace University" by Dave Ramsey, savings is important. Have an emergency fund, pay off debts and pay with cash, investments (long and short term), and giving a little, and having proper insurances is essential.
Last summer I hurt myself pretty bad. I was out of work for a little while because of it. Thankfully, I had insurance which covered most of the expenses and my emergency fund covered the rest plus kept food on the table while I was out of work. Looking back, the situation was an incovienence and not a crisis. Thank God for my grandparents guidance and "Financial Peace University" for education.

I honestly believe that peoples investments should be money spent on things for preparedness. Those things are always worth money.
401 ks can take a dump quicker then me after bad shrimp and tequila.
A #10 can of pork and beans or an "extra" Ruger 10/22 are always worth more. As a matter of fact, guns have always retained value better then stocks/bonds/savings, etc.
I was out of work for 6 months once and my stocks of food are what saved me. I spent a few yrs as Mr Mom and selling rifles paid for all unexpected bills like car repairs.
I remember selling my AK mags for $30 bucks during the AWB in '96. I bought them for $19 for 4 in an east german pouch in '92.
Money in the bank is doing nothing for you if you can't access it, ie; when you really need it.
Natertot - You summed it up very well. When SHTF it was an inconvenience not a crisis. That IS the point I was trying to make. You said it much better than I. That's what being prepared is all about.
Winter - As I said. Invest in something. The 401K was an example of what and how to do it. That aside, it is still the best financial investment vehicle available. Your investment in weapons is investment in action. If you choose precious metals, gasoline, whiskey or silver thimbles doesn't matter to me. Invest in something that is convertible.

Wonderful post. Even if some disagree with the ideas set forth initially (interest of brevity was mentioned). How often have we repeated advice from our elders that we dimissed upon hearing it? The days of stay home Moms (yes I feel Mom should be capitalized) are gone. Mention of pensions was made. Those companies are falling left-and-right for a zillion reasons. When they fall, your pensions go with them. I know the "G" word stirs up animosity, but they have taken control of 401K accounts out of the hands of the principals. And 401K is portable. Benefits? No-brainer. Regardless what your plan for the future...have one. Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst...kinda' what we're talking about here huh?
Just a point of clarification. If a company dissolves then the pension is guaranteed through the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation.

However, many companies have opted to stop offering pensions. The company I worked for decided to no longer offer a pension a couple of years after I retired. For those that had say 15 years they didn't lose anything they just didn't accrue any more. Companies not offering a pension was my reference above.

Whups...I was misinformed. At 48 I've never worked for a company with a pension plan. I like the pension idea. It encourages loyalty, in my opinon.

Thank your for this great post, very informative. I have to change it a bit to European style in my head but I totally understand what you are saying.
We have to survive our modern life as well.

ya left out investing in properties , you would think it would be a great time with interest rates so low and the costs to buy so cheap , but thats not the case , plus banks arent actually lending money , they've also whittled "our" credit rating so that what wa once considered easy to get a loan with impeccable credit "720" is now only mediocre , the credit bureaus need to to be abolished they turned themselves into gods and only they can give your blessings in this world! One thing about properties , I know this from experience (I own over 20 properties) , unless you own the property outright (at least to me its worthless, at least as a rental) sure you have some leverage if you have a mortgage, but the banks can belly up and leave you with a bad credit rating because of there failure! The more property you own the more property taxes (think about your house that you own , times that by 20 , thats where I am every year 30 k ) , now also you have to pay insurance monthly , maintenance costs , it adds up quick , and heres the real kicker , even the economy has taken a bath , your local government is out to screw you , because they've decide that even with a terrible economy they are NOT lowering the valuation of your property by half (because thats what you can sell it for now) , they have doubled the valuation to "steal" more property taxes from you! If your house was valued at $300k last year the real value because of the market means you can sell it at $180k , even insurance companies have lowered your value, but not the County , sucks knowing that the County will get more tax money from you and at the same time if your house burns down you will only get a third of the value!
First, go back and read my post. I said Invest in Something. That includes property if you think it's worthwhile.
No one has "whittled" credit scores. A FICO score of 720 was getting loans because the lending environment was far too generous. Think of pumping water uphill and turning the pump off. The water will level out. The credit pump has been turned off and the FICO scores are leveling out where they should have been all along. I'm not a huge fan of credit agencies either but until something better comes along it is a decent methodology for determining risk and does so fairly for everyone regardless of our differences (race, religion, sex, etc). In addition, individual lending agencies have their own criteria for evaluating risk beyond just the credit score.
If a bank fails it does NOT impact your credit rating. The FED takes over the bank and it operates just as it has with NO impact to the customers.
You need to remember that taxes go to fire, police, bridges and roads, libraries and schools just to name a few. Just because your home valuation has dropped doesn't mean the salaries of government employees went down or the utilities in those libraries and schools went down. That doesn't mean the county is stealing anything. The are continuing to pay their obligations and the only income they have are taxes. You have a couple of choices. You can sell at a loss and write it off your taxes, retain your property until the valuation rises again, which it will, default on your payments and let the bank take it back or default on your taxes and let the county auction your property. You just have to choose which you find the most beneficial.

One thing I would add is, tithe to yourself first. Try to put 10% of your pay into a rainy day account and don't touch it unless you really need it. If you can't put that much away right now, put something away into an account.
Rick, I will have to disagree with on the govt. stealing from us. There is no reason in the world that any civil servant should be paid more than the average income of the people they claim to serve.
I don't know how it is in California other than what I read. Yeah, you definitely had some town's fathers feeding themselves quite well. Around here, I think we underpay our LEO, fire, EMT and teachers. All that comes out of my taxes so I understand what giving them a raise means but why do we underpay the folks we count on the most and entrust our children to? I don't happen to think military are overpaid either. Semper's reference was county government and that's what I tried to address.
@ Sarky-The quality of officer you get is often based on the salary paid them. New Orleans has been cited as having the most under-paid and most corrupt officers in the US. I will also point out that the police frequently deal with the unemployed, how do you make their salary proportional to that? I remember when officers HAD to supplement their income to support their families. The quality and professionalism of those officers was understandably lower.
I completely overlooked your first point of tithing yourself first. I could not agree more. You should consider yourself the first bill in your budget. I apologize for not having addressed that.
