I am not understanding OPSEC. I looked it up but there seems to be no explanation that could help me form something solid or that I can write down and work on. Mostly it's about protecting information? It was just mentioned on another thread. How much and what is physical? Or any. I usually get the gist of things but this one I never could put a down to earth meaning to. I am not military and would not understand that view. Husband was a Vietnam Veteran but never ever talked about the military. How about personal opsec for a small home in the country or even if there is such a thing. sincerely, g

A general description of OPSEC. As you said , it is Operations Security. In a home type setting, it would be as simple as not putting on your Face book account that you are preparing for bad times and have stock piled food, weapons etc. Also not advertising that you will be out of town for 2 weeks in the Bahamas. Although the term OPSEC seems ominous and secretive, on a personnal level it is what most people do every day, just common sense in not advertising things about you and your family that disclose a vulnerability or make you a target.

OpSec also includes situational awareness. Being aware of what's happening in your neighborhood and workplace. Who lives where. Family members. Visitors. Workmen. Who's coming and going. Vehicles, deliveries, etc. In a way you have to be a snoop and it's useful to have neighbors who feel the same way. You watch for each other ('neighborhood watch program' exists in some places) and you're not hesitant to bring up anything unusual.

If you want to do a good assessment on your house trying walking around it and looking in the windows. Can you see your computer? So can the bad guys. Your television? Perhaps moving it is in order or window treatments that prevent an easy view.

Is there a ladder laying outside the house that would give the bad guys access to the second story? Did you set the box for that new TV out for on trash day? Now everyone knows you have a new TV. At least smash the box flat so it's no longer a billboard. Is your name on the outside of the house? All I have to do is call 411 for your telephone number, call and if i don't get an answer, go inside.

Just some random thoughts.

It is also paying attention to what you talk about in public. I have sat in restaurants and learned all about a person just by paying attention to their side of a phone conversation.

I live three miles from the nearest public road and my cabin sticks out like a sore thumb on Google Earth,i cleared a fire barrier around it and I'm letting it grow back.I have about 10,000$ worth of solar cells and two wind generators,so I find dogs are great for early warning systems.

That also goes for cars. Don't leave papers in view that give out your info. Working in LE, alot of times I can tell who owns a car, where they work, where they live, and how much money they make because they leave their check stub sitting in their car where it can be seen through the window. I don't even have to run plates that often!

Don't beat yourself up too much, we all have our moments! That is whay I make it a point to check my bank account twice a week whether I have used it or not. I also run my credit check every year to ensure nothing else is going on outside of my direct banking. Whether house, car, work, and any other environment I frequent, here are my OpSec rules.

1: Keep everything of value out of sight. You can't steal it if you can't see it.
2: Keep everything locked and secured. You can't steal it if you can't see it and can't get access to it.
3: If certain papers are needed, keep in proper lockbox, safe, or safety deposit box.
4: If certain papers are not needed, burn 'em. Shredding can be put back together with some time and patience.
5: Be aware of your surroundings and take special note of anything new or different. I can tell as soon as a neighbor gets a new car, a car breaks down, they are out of town, and even of their is a different person delivering mail. I know who jogs in my neighborhood and what times they do jog. This is all from just being outside in my own yard and being aware.
6: Watch your converstions. Go to a private office when talking to your bank about things beyond your general banking. We even have our taxes done in the privacy of our own home.

These basic things can prevent alot of issues.

Also, Rick, you are right about the TV box thing. The guy behind me just got a Samsung 42" LCD HDTV with 1080P resolution a couple weeks ago. I hope he'll invite me for superbowl this year!

In the Corps we were told to avoid routine when in public. change routes to and from your usual stops as well as order of stops. keep your head on a swivel, get ground view, or tunnel vision. Note any obstructions or suspicious people. At one point in my current career I hauled high end electronics from SoCal north. My company had at least 5 loads stolen in 3 mos. 2 of them truck trailer and all. Most of the time the drivers stopped at the same places and had the same habits (one would leave his keys in the running unlocked truck while he ate). lunch

Natertot - Excellent post!! Making yourself less attractive than your neighbors is the name of the game and keeping a keen eye on you finances as you've posted is just good sense.

For those that may not know, you can receive a free copy of your credit report annually from the big 3 reporting agencies. While your credit score requires a small fee, $6 or $7 per agency, your report is free by law. It's a really good idea to pull your report once a year and check it for any mistakes that are listed. You'll also see if anyone is using your identity to secure loans. It's estimated that about 1/3 of the credit reports do contain errors and those errors can translate into you being charged higher than necessary interest rates for loans on housing and vehicles.

Gone are the days (of my childhood) when we could leave our doors unlocked, and in our case, wide open.
The innocence of feeling safe and trusting exclusively in all that's good are gone, and now we have to develop a whole new SOPs that should reflect this new reality. Even SD in AK has to make some adjustments for this, let alone the rest of us in towns, cities and burbs. I can get sentimental about it if I let myself, but it'll never stop me from doing what I need to do to be smart, safe and aware. It does take a little more time and effort but if you work it into your routine, you'll never notice it.

Great Point, avoid the same routine. Also I would like to point out in this post 911 world, Opsec also includes knowing your surounding, and you would be amazed how often it changes. I tell my people, when you go into a mall, note where the closest Fire Exting. is, the AED, and the closes exits are. Never know what could happen. Also need to know where your children are, just in case something happens, where are you gonna meet up at?

After shopping now you stop at a resturant, you have to do it all over again, fire, AED, exit, meet. I get my kids involved, when we change enviroments, they tell me where these items are. If they get it right, I let them have an extra piece of cake or something rewarding. Great way to teach the younger generation

on a situational awareness note, and also particularly in this post 9/11 world; an anecdote:

my lady and i went into the post office a couple months ago, and noticed an unattended bag outside the door. we did not mention it because we saw clearly that the bag was empty as we walked close by it, but as we where in the car preparing to leave, two employees came out to investigate the bag with a stick. my lady was looking right at them and then preparing to make a call on her cell phone. we noticed that they were staring right back at us.

now; situational awareness can be exemplified thus: when you are looking directly at security employees, who view a suspicious situation with a trained mind-set, while they investigate an unattended bag at a government building; don't be looking right at them while dialing a cell phone. just because your life trains you to view a given situation with a certain attitude or procedure, you can not assume that those are share by others. this can breed misunderstanding even in innocuous encounters.
