View Full Version : Food Stockpile List~ (The lightest/most nutritious)

Hey, I am starting to stockpile some foods/ammo/meds and such just in case the SHTR. The other two are pretty thought unnecessary, but when stockpiling food there are many options.
There are two main qualifications that I wish all items on this list to meet. These items must be nutritious (less=more), and light weight (in case running is eminent). Of course if something is heavy but also is a staple that should always be in such a stockpile, that should be mentioned as well. With a little note explaining why it is a must
I'll go ahead and begin the list with a just a few since I'm on a study break:
(((fine print: the added notes should not be taken as facts but in most cases are supported by some light research... please do not sue if your wheat only lasts for 27 years )))
THE LIST:
On the go compatible
-Water (no water = dead)
-Mainstay and Datrex (3600 calories per 1.5lb)
-Powdered Milk (good source of vit D and electrolytes)
-Coffee (for nothing beats a freshly brewed cup o' Joe)
-MRI (not sure how effective they are, but they sure are popular)
-Instant potato flakes
-jerky
-survival bars
-Powdered Gatorade
-Peanut butter (no refrigeration needed)
-Trailmix (Include fruits)
-Canned Tuna/other meats (though getting on the heavier side, I figured these are considered staples)
-Vitamins
-Oatmeal
-HDRs,
-mild laxitive!! (you don't want to be constipated, for extended periods, especially while not well hydrated. a bowel obstruction can become very serious if neglected, and would be an embarresing way to go)
-Bottled meats (Bugging in)
-NO ham and lima beans
-Sprouting seeds (Quick and light way to harvest fresh and nutritious grub)
-Ramen
Stockpile Staples
Big Rule: Incorporate these things into your normal diet so your body is used to processing it and to rotate/keep fresh the stockpile.
Wheat (30 year shelf life if sealed properly)
Rice
I will edit the list as more people add things....

MREs + water = alive for months, with a little supplementation. we know how effective this is because fighting men and women have been forced to do this. they are nominally intended to be eaten exclusively for no more than 21 days. you could also supplement that list with HDRs, or a similar storable ration not intended for combat operations.
i support every item on that list; even the cans. just because you might not want to have to carry them does not mean you shouldn't have the option.
i would add a mild laxitive (you don't want to be constipated for extended periods, especially while not well hydrated. a bowel obstruction can become very serious if neglected, and would be an embarresing way to go), and perhaps some other electrolytes. your electrolytes shouldn't come from sodium and potassium alone. that's a major risk for heart trouble. I believe the Gatorade powder contains potassium salts. dried fruit in a decent variety in your trail mix might be the trick. some are higher in certain metal salts than others.
The list really depends on why you are stockpiling. Since my primary concern is weather related and I plan to bug in then my list is apt to be very different from those on here who are concerned about bugging out and roving hoards. In any case, your list needs to be comprised of those things you'll eat.
And if you plan on running from anything then you had better be stripped down to combat equipped and food is not on the top of that list.

For "bugging in", a great thing to add to food storage is bottled meat. We put all of my first Elk this year into jars and canned them. Hopefully I can shoot one more and make some jerky. This way if power is out we still have meat. We have lots of frozen meat as well, so if we lost power we could spend a few days canning the rest with a turkey cooker if need be. My wife uses the canned meat for all sorts of stuff throughout the year, like taco's, stew, barbecue meat sandwiches, stir fry, ect. My philosophy is to have food stored that is usable so it rotates into the menu all year long. Some of the benefits are you don't end up with waste when everything expires, and another is if we were forced to live on this alone our body would be used to it and not have negative affects while the body adjusts. A negative of this is many of the food is not very portable, and we have to be conscious of keeping stores stocked. What do you guys who live in the city do for water? I have one fifty gallon drum that I keep full of water, but figure that would only last a few weeks if rationed, and only used for drinking. I would like to have one more of these drums.
I need to also consider having a couple week supply of portable food like MRE's and dehydrated food.

Absolutely about the laxative. If you rely on MREs for an extended period (or even a short period), you will be convinced of that bit of wisdom!

The number one consideration IMO for stockpiling food is to store food that you regularly eat. In a situation where you might have to rely on your food stores there is no point in increasing your stress level by having to eat something you cannot stand.

Yup, a good electrolyte balance is very important I hear. Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Bicarbonate. The Milk has a good amount of potassium. I'm sure most dried foods (trail mix, jerky, peanut butter) all have a good (if not high) amount of sodium. Some calcium is found in the milk, I was hoping that would be a better source. Bicarbonate is produced in your body as long as you breath?
i would add a mild laxitive (you don't want to be constipated for extended periods, especially while not well hydrated. a bowel obstruction can become very serious if neglected, and would be an embarresing way to go)
I was wondering... would a laxative dehydrate you even more since, especially in extreme situations, your body will use your stool as a source of hydration. Not sure which is worse... being dehydrated or having a knot in your gut... but if a bear can hold it for a few months then so can I!
I would suggest that constipation caused by dietary intake would indicate you are not drinking enough water. I recognize that there are times when you are limited on what you can do in that regard ,combat for example. But I don't think you can make a direct comparison to experiences under combat scenarios to some unknown survival situation and come to the conclusion that MREs will cause constipation if you rely on them as a food source in a survival situation. I've used them hiking and never had a problem because I had sufficient water intake. Just my cut on it.

This is a key term! I will add it to the equation
MRE+(- amount of water) = constipation :smartass:

From the OP, it looks like weight is a concern, as well as packability. The two qualifications he mentioned were weight and nutrition. As a disclaimer, my recommendations are based off of those two criteria. Notice that taste is not a criteria. I also wouldn't recommend this approach for long time food storage in your basement.
First you need to understand calories. Without getting too scientific, calories are what our body uses for energy. Vitamins are not calories. There are three types of calories: proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Calorie density refers to how many calories are in a unit of weight. Fat is 9 cal/gram, and protein and carbs are 4 cal/gram. In other words, fat is much more dense. So if you want the most calories for the same amount of weight, then the more fat the better, pure fat being the best.
So, for a real short term food list (ie a couple days at most) just pack a plastic bottle of olive oil.
The next criteria is nutrition. Looking at what doctors recommend long distance backpackers, a 50-35-15 diet is recommended. That is 50% carbs, 35% fat, and 15% protein. A good goal is 1.5 lbs of food a day, at 3600 calories.
Another consideration with weight is cooking. The more you have to cook the food, the heavier the stuff you have to bring. For survival, forget about a stove. Look at a fire for less weight. MRE's don't need to be cooked, but they weigh more than dehydrated. Since we aren't looking for taste, only weight, look for foods that are dehydrated, but also don't need to be rehydrated. Think meal replacement drink powders or Mainstay or Datrex bars. Insterestingly Mainstay and Datrex bars weigh 1.5 lbs for 3600 calories.
Thank you for that. I'm not fat. I'm calorie dense. Wait a minute. That doesn't sound good either.

Thanks fM,
That is kinda exactly what I was looking for. If S really HTR I expect that I will have to set up somewhere and live off the land, possibly for some extended period of time. This is why I was concerned of vitamins/nutrition as I could imagine some of these to be scarce, especially in certain regions, and though not an immediate effect, I could see this being an eventual downfall.
Light and dense high calorie foods to sustain myself until I get to, and get to know, the area in which I would begin to settle. Then long term nutrition/meal supplements to ensure proper vitality for an extended time.
Thank you for that. I'm not fat. I'm calorie dense. Wait a minute. That doesn't sound good either.
I think protein dense is the most enticing
You've taken the tact that you will be alone and on your own or at least with a few close family and/or friends. If something were severe enough to toss me out of my house my guess is we would be one of the roving hordes or refugees moving from here to there. There just aren't very many examples of folks living off the land by themselves. It's a noble idea I suppose but a pipe dream for most. We'll all congregate where the food or the water is and try to make some sense of life. Even the very tough that thing they could get by that way will come straggling in at some point.

We were required to have an "emergency ration" in our butt pack. This ration was understandably stripped down to the main meal and a snack of some sort. I had the same tuna with noodles for several years, figuring I would be less likely to eat it unless I absolutely had to. :o

I try and incorporate two food strategies. For my BOB and go kits, I only put in datrex or mainstay bars. They have a 5 year shelf life, and can be left in my car during the winter. They also don't need cooking and are more compact than MRE's. These are meant for short term survival. I am also putting together a year supply of food that I keep in my house. I use completely different strategies for this.

Well I am assuming that when it all goes south that there will be a lot of panic and a lot of people that can't/shouldn't be trusted. Moving out (only if my home has become unsafe) solo/with my small group into the wilderness I hope to isolate myself from this panic. Once out for a nice time cushion, of about a week or two, I would expect most of the insanity to "put itself out", and I would probably meet up with other level headed people who by this time will be in the woods as well.
Natural disasters and struggles of that sort I would stay in a group, but in situations such as a revolution/invasion people will be in a panicked state and untrustworthy. I figure if I prepare for the worst (solo survival), then group survival will be covered in these preparations.

What are some of the things you are including in your year supply?
For a year supply there are a lot of things to consider. You want it to be shelf stable, but also you want to be able to rotate it out. The only way to rotate food out is to store food that you already use, or use food that you will store. My parents grew up rotating a year supply, so they incorporated that into my childhood. In fact, when my grandfather died, I inherited a lot of his food preps. What this means is that my diet now incorporates a lot of food storage. So, what do I include in my food list....
To me, the most important staple is wheat. Wheat properly sealed will last more than 30 years. It is also probably the most nutritious grain out there. My grandfather grew up eating cracked wheat cereal every morning. My dad grew up eating it, and I grew up eating it. It took a while to get used to, but now I love it (with honey of course). My wife and kids still need to be convinced. I have also lived off of home made whole wheat bread. We even have a "secret" family recipe for whole wheat bread. If you store wheat, then you need to have special tools to process it. You also need to do a lot of learning on how to make stuff with it. This takes time and effort.
Along with the wheat, I store all the other ingredients in our secrete family bread recipe. I also make it without a mixer sometimes (although a mixer does a better job). Currently I am practicing making it with a dutch oven. I haven't perfected that yet. :)
I also store rice. Nutritionally, I don't think it is as good as wheat. But, it is easier to cook, and you don't need special equipment. You can also keep rice in a bucket for a long time. Oats are another good staple that can be stored for a very long time.
After that it is just personal preference. The main thing is that you rotate. It is a slow process.

I'm generally a fan of store what you eat, eat what you store, but since that's not the topic, what I've enjoyed has been:
Potato flakes for making mashed potatoes (add dry milk and a dash of grapeseed oil instead of butter)
Ramen
Freeze dried hamburger with macaroni and cheese or any kind of hamburger helper
Jasmine rice
Chicken soup (chicken bullion, FD chicken, egg noodles (or rice), dried peas, dried corn, dried carrots) Add some potato flakes for a stew-like consistency.
I have a lot of Ramen noodles, too. You can make all kinds of stuff with Ramen. Cheap, light weight, lasts forever and versatile. Hard to go wrong with Ramen.
Lot's of freeze dried foods, too, as well as canned.

yes, it would, and this is why prevention of constipation is important, and why i recommend a laxative as a preventative measure. if you get a bowel obstruction which persists in a situation where you don't have access to enough water, it can become a gastrolith, which are hard to rehydrate and can cause perforation of the bowel. that can be fatal.
i let a bowel obstruction get out of hand a while back and it required go-lytely. that's a gallon of laxative solution and 4 hours in the bathroom. if i'd taken care of it the second day, it would have required a mild laxative and an extra pint to quart of fluids.
Go-Lytely is one of the preps for a colonoscopy. It's grossly mislabeled. It should be called Go-Oftenly, Go-Quickly or even Going, Going, Gone.

Just a note on the Ramen noodles.....Referencing the "already in the cup just add water and heat"....Kept a good supply at "The Place" when it was just a 16 ft Shasta trailer down the hill....
As there was no heat, dried supplies worked well....mostly.
Did have occasion to give one a try while staying there during hunting season....The cups had been there a while(?).....So, added water and into the micro wave for lunch, was a "Shrimp flavored' package.
After I git it ready I noticed that the "shrimp" seems to have come back to life? or maybe it was just bugs? Anyway tossed it out....
Apparently the do not last forever....how old, not real sure....maybe mark stash dates on stuff?
I have the standard stuff stored inside. It's dehydrated and as long as the seal on the package isn't broken they should last for a long time. I don't know if the package is air tight, however. Maybe I ought to toss them in a zip lock. Hmmmm.

I sure that they last a long time....I truly don't know how long that particular pack was storeed...inside the trailer...no heat, subject to hot/cold/dry/damp etc.
At the time I just opened and made up another package, bought the already in the cup, for not having to wash too many dishes scenario, when you have to carry water, store where it won't freeze, was an asset.
These are still a big part of the 'supply".

That reminds me of a tasty treat I came up with, I call it cat gut stew (even though it is neither cat guts or stew). You make ramen, and then you use the ramen broth to make instant mashed taters (don't forget to add real butter), then there should be a little broth left, use this and some water to make some white rice. After you hydrate all the ingredients thoroughly mix them together and you should end up with a sticky mass of food that you can stab with your fork, pull off the mass of food off the plate and eat. I do not recommend this for anybody that should not consume copious amounts of sodium, if you have no problem with sodium, add salt to taste.....

Ramen is a steady mainstay in the college to mid-twenties person's diet. . . about everyone I knew the past five to six years lived off that stuff. It isn't exactly nutritous but it can get the job done. Too much sodium with the seasoning for me, but in a survival situation it is certainly better than nothing. I take a Burton Liquid Lounger (http://www.circle8shop.com/burton-pack-liquid-lounger-ss-black) out on simple hikes and short camping trips and always sneak several of those packages into the back zipper compartment. The drawback would be getting water to boil it on a consistent basis (depending on the situation) and it is not the best thing to eat for people who have problems processing all that sodium.
I think the list and discussion in here has been pretty solid -- especially finallyME's discourse. I plan on taking a decent lengthed trek into the wilderness this summer and this thread has definitely given me some things to consider. Thanks everyone.
The amount of sodium you add is dependent on how much seasoning you add. I only use about a 1/4 of the seasoning because of that reason.
You take a boom box on hikes?! Sacrilege, sir. Simply sacrilege.

Over the years of eating ramen, I think I have come to the point where I really don't like it. A friend of mine suggested another brand that makes instant egg noodles in a similar package. I tried those on a backpacking trip. They weren't bad, but still not really to my liking. Then I tried some instant noodles from Japan, Ichiban I believe. I like those much better. When I take them backpacking, I usually add a packet of tuna to it, and maybe some crackers. The point is, sometimes you have to experiment to find what you like.
When I go backpacking, I am trying not to suffer. I am on vacation and want to relax a little and get away from the city. So, I plan my meals with taste and enjoyment in mind. This is different than what I would put in a BOB.

Music is almost as part of nature as the trees... excluding death metal :walkman: I took a music theory class one time and stumbled apon minimalisitc music (not minimal music...some kind of techno). After each lecture I came out of class with a strange acuteness to all the sounds around me as they formed into a song :stuart: sure it sounds like I was http://planetsmilies.net/smoking-smiley-7578.gif a little too much, but I swear there was none of that  . The idea is that all the sounds you experience every day is the highest form of beauty/music because it will never be repeated in the same way, since there is no way to reproduce what you are hearing, as you are hearing it. Anyway, its a cool principle that applies to the sounds of nature, if you have some spare time look up johny cage.
