Sure you can buy these just about anywhere , maybe get a better deal , but , heres something to think about , Light sticks have a 3-4 year shelf life ,so buying in bulk isnt bad deal , they generally last 12 hours once you bend them ! Thats really not too bad , I can see a whole hell'uve of alot of uses for these , bulk is definitely the way to go!!

I confess I don't know a great deal about them chemically. I do have quite a few and I used some at the jamboree last year that were easily over 5 years old. You can select the amount of time you want them to burn. Some are very short term; in the minutes range, while others are in the hours range. I assume it has to do with the amount of magic dust they put inside but that's just a guess.

Dang, those are expensive. I buy them at a local shop 10 for $6. I use at least 2 on every scout campout. We use them as flags for "capture the flag". The boys love it. I also bring them when I camp with my kids. I put one or two in the tent with them all night. Kinda like a night light that I don't have to buy batteries for. They feel more comfortable that way. I also put one on each kid when we go trick-or-treating. And, I have a bunch in the car for emergency road flare type uses. I have noticed that some colors are brighter than others. Green or yellow seems to be the brightest.

Believe they are quite handy myself 3 in every kit here lol I also like this gives me fully adjustable light for map reading bathroom or whatever. 7013

They are great IF you use them before they poop out. Much like canned food, put them in rotation as to expiration date. It makes no sense using the newer ones before the older ones.

They are kinda pricey, I carry on in my hunting coat pocket.
The biggest use seems to be hanging them on the back of a 4 wheeler, so you can tell who's in your group, when the are a bunch of riders on the trail.

It wasn't a tent, but a raised platform with a tarp stretched over a frame and the sides could be rolled up or dropped down. We would hang two or three from the main support inside the tent and they would make for excellent lighting on stormy nights when we turned in early.

We used them to mark things at night, such as latrines when camping.

The other fun thing we did, but probably very stupid, is we would crack them open and use the glowing goo as war paint and run around at night with glowing faces.

Adjusting the ratio of diphenol oxalate to hydrogen peroxide determines whether the chemical reaction proceeds slowly, producing a small amount of light over a long period of time, or quickly producing a very bright but short lived light. Quantities and qualities of ingredients and the physical size of the glow stick can limit the total integrated light output.

MANY vendors sell bulk light sticks. 6" 12 US made glow sticks can be had for half the price of the linked source at www.glow-sticks.com, for example. Glow stick bracelets can be had for $1.50 for 50 (3 cents each). google. Quality varies.


I have cut glowsticks to use the fluid. we used a lot of it for many years. Had to filter out the glass shards from the broken ampules. It eats some plastics.

The only problem I have with glow sticks is that once you turn them on, there is no turning them off. Other than that they are great.

I have one you can turn on and off whenever you want. It's called a flashlight. (snort, giggle)

These are great, I have a couple myself.

BTW, brands do seem to differ in brightness and longevity. A couple times I've tested the real Cyulume brand Snaplights vs the Mayday branded ones and the Snaplights are significantly brighter and last substantially longer.

In a summer camp full of nothing but boys, yeah, no thank you... lol.

The goo worked great on footballs, frisbies, and such. You could keep playing at night, which was awesome when we had different colors of light sticks. The ball was one color and each team was another, though not everyone would paint their face with the stuff. They would just wear a stick on their belt or something.

I am a dad with an ulterior motive - to keep track of my kid in a crowd... I kept a small qty of white ones, in the glove box. While coming back from a OA campfire with a large crowd I handed one to my son as we left.. this way I could stay with him and keep him safe in complete darkness in a huge crowd...

I have no idea about prices on these , I was originally looking at something else when I came across this link and it occurred to me just how useful these stick can be , Ive used them for many years ,just never really thought about them until now, thank you to every one for the information

I can say with relative certainty that if you tie paracord to them and give one to Robbie and one to Bret on a Jamboree in Tennessee - you will have to duck a lot.

The other day a coworker showed me a you tube post, apparently you can make your own using mountain dew, the bottle it's in, some baking soda and peroxide. I haven't tried it yet and don't know how long it lasts but it looked pretty bright.

If nothing else it's something cool to show the kids:)

theres quite a bit of people who tried that and it didnt work as a matter of fact they put the contents of a glow stick in the bottle!

I hadn't tried it but was intending to with my son as a .....hey thats cool moment. So what your saying is they poured the contents of the glowsitck into the bottle and played it off like it was the soda and peroxide? If so thats kind of disappointing, since I saw it on the internet I was sure it was true ;)

He's right on that. There is no way Mt. Dew, HP and baking soda would glow. You're wasting your time.
