This is a fairly comprehensive essay, I would be interested in your "NON-Political" thoughts, and any specialized actions you might suggest.

He's a bit behind on some of his numbers. Greece is pretty much a drop in the bucket and the audit has been completed already. The next round of bailouts will arrive in November and resolve any issues with Greece through 2012. It's a short term fix but a fix none-the-less. If you toss in France, Italy and Ireland then you start talking about some serious money with some equally serious concerns.
But this is not news to anyone. We've all played the same game of adding social programs and overpaying government employees (pension, vacations and pay packages combined). And it's not like the debt problems are sitting in a vacuum. Some pretty intelligent folks are working on the issues day in and day out. I said sometime back that raising taxes and reducing services were the only logical options that we have to employ world wide. It has to happen. We now have to pay the piper that has been playing for the last several decades. This isn't about market crashes and insolvent banks. This is about no more milk subsidies, no more land bank, no more school lunch programs and increases in taxes. You won't see it in 2012 because that's an election year but hold on to your hat in 2013 and beyond. My advice is to pay down debt and save all that you can next year because the pay back is going to be brutal.

Economics IS politics Rick. Our nation was founded on econimic philosophy and the right to prosper. Our two political parties are now divergent based on the core economic principles motivating each faction. I will, however, attempt to stay out of trouble on this. I will play the part of the History professor predicting the future by looking into the past. We do not do enough of that, so we wind up in the mess where we are now sitting.
Paying out is not the ticket for everyone. There are a large group that would benifit from such a crash.
If you and the bank are not a land owner then unsecued debt is the place to be. Borrow all you can and pay it off with the inflated currency of tomorrow or file bankrupcy after the crash. Folks do not realize that a big part of the current problem came with the change in bankrupcy laws in 2005.
Owning your land outright will make you a target for the higher taxes that will be demanded from anyone that owns anything. The situation may make outright ownership a hopeless burden with seizure of your property by the taxing agency a permenant threat.
The revolt might be from the landless masses seeking redistribution of wealth or it might be from the overburdened homeowners resisting the taxcollector.
What Mathews is concerned about is the long term political dynamic convulsing out of this econimic situation. He is forwarning of another Nazi/Bolshivic/Progressive-Party revolution feeding on the despiration of the masses, right wing or left wing is irrelivent, the resulting distruction is the same.
War in Europe, a virtual certinty, will not leave us unaffected. As a NATO leader we will be forced to choose sides and we are talking about the possibility of one NATO unit fighting another NATO unit and we have treaty obligations to both. There may not be an attack on a nation's borders, but the distruction of their financial/economic system is one and the same.
"We will not drop bombs, we will just shut off your credit and dictate economic/political/social terms to you as if you were not a soverin nation but simply one of our foolish child."
Who is the agressor in this situation? The big kid that took the candy or the little kid that kicked the big one in the shins? The little one might throw the first punch but the big one instigated it in the little guys' eyes and he is reacting in the only way he can.
The same institutions, structures and systems are operating here. Our civil war being the forces of "Law and Order" (left or right wing) against "Home Grown Terrorists" whoever they might be (left or right).
In this turmoil we might also see a realignment of the power base world wide as the European nations tire of having their energy uses/success in war dictated by the mid-east. The resulting reaction to the vested interests of the US, Japan, China, in those areas, might see annexation or outright colonization become a possibility again.
Remember what a vital role the oil reserves of the mid-east played with the German campaign in N Africa and and the British resistance AND on the German Soviet front. The turning point in WW2 in Europe was fought at Stalingrad over the control of the oil supply of southern Russia.
The scope of this war will not allow us the luxury of using our volunteer army. We are looking at the reinstutution of the draft and the resulting riots and turmiol when "those who believe" battle "those who do not believe" in the streets, allys and fields of the US, as folks make the decision that they would rather die rearranging things over here than die to win a colony over there.
Nope, I have no answers, just as no one else does due to the fact that governments do not opertate by the same rules people do. We have only suppositions and theories that will not work and are unacceptable to the parties in power. But you might note that I carefully made no one the bad guy and did not choose a side.

You are thinking a bit old school. Thirty or even twenty years ago I would have agreed with your insight but I can't today. Globalization and the internet have dovetailed all of the major countries into a single player whether we like it or not. His essay about how tightly we impact one another was solidly correct and no one in Europe or Asia or North America for that matter benefits by cutting off credit, seizing assets or declaring war of any type. That's why the Euro nations are going so far out of their way to assist Greece in pay down. And if you haven't noticed a LOT of the government reforms that are taking place are ideas that were developed outside of their country.
There are only two ways to fix your debt problem. Increase your income or decrease your spending or both (maybe that's three). Governments have the luxury of increasing taxes to increase income. Don't be shocked if you see a national sales tax in 2013 or 2014. Ask Hungary, France, Germany or Belgium what it's like to have an over 50% personal income tax. You thought 28% was bad? We already have a nearly 40% corporate tax rate. Wonder why we can't create new jobs? That's second only to Japan.
We've spent our entire post war period adding social programs and government regulation. Each new program and regulation grew the size of government and its employees. Two million civilians work for the U.S. government and that does not include the postal system. Two million!! Imagine what the retirement rate is going to be for the baby boomers from just federal jobs as well as the long term obligation of paying their pensions. You start reducing social programs that has to have a ripple affect on jobs and regulations. But we want a smaller government, right?
Honestly, a crash would be the easy way out. Lay off everyone and start all over. It's not going to be that simple, I'm afraid. We're going to pay our way out and it's going to be pretty painful to do it. You guys are fretting about the wrong thing. Doing the right thing is going to be worse, in a lot of ways, than just letting the sticks fall.

That's no surprise either. I said last year that states would default this year. It was inevitable. The fact that we had both a good first quarter and a second round of bail out money is the only thing that has kept some of them afloat as long as they have.
Now! What's your opinion on this or is this just to stir the pot, so to speak.
This is part of a post I made on 6/8/2010 regarding countries defaulting.
"We find that countries default on loans from private foreign creditors more often in “bad times” than in “good times. ”The relationship is surprisingly weak, however: domestic output often declines without triggering a default, and countries occasionally suspend payments or reschedule their obligations when domestic output is high."
"106 countries have defaulted a total of 250 times since the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The most common defaulters — Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela — each experienced at least eight distinct spells of default. Ecuador and Honduras hold the record for the longest periods in default; beginning with their initial loans as members of the Central American Confederation in the 1820s, each has accumulated nearly 120 years of non-compliance. In our sample, new defaults arose in every decade and were most common during the 1980s, when more than 50 countries (about 40% of all nations that owed money to private foreign creditors) failed to pay in full on schedule."
The point being in all of this is that you can take some consolation in the fact that countries default all the time on loans. Neither EU's problems nor Hungary's problems are isolated or indicative of a major calamity. It's certainly not a good thing but they will ultimately reschedule their payments and/or negotiate new terms. I would also point out that the reference to the 1980's above was during the last recession and please note that almost half of all nations defaulted during the last recession and we're still here.

Now! What's your opinion on this or is this just to stir the pot, so to speak.
Little of this effects me, unless it got to the level of food distribution. But, this is a subject that I find very interesting. At my age (65) my biggest problem is dealing with my body. I see the accelerating rate of physical deterioration as my front burner issue. The quality of my life both financially and physically have been declining for about 15 years at an ever accelerating rate.
I feel that it is the same with the world financial and political systems, a slow, but accelerating deterioration. I don't think we will recover from the current recession, I think unemployment rate will increase, taxes will go up. I think we are in the same boat as 1965, in debt from war, social unrest, we will for sure have union unrest, I think the "Baby-Boomer" Union Members will go violent when they discover there pension ain't there for them to retire.
Really if it was not for the FED suppressing interest rates, we would be in super serious doo-doo. I don't see the war card being played, cold war, yes. But not WW III. I do expect food prices to become painful just like fuel has become. Cost me $3,730.00 just to fill one of my fuel tanks for winter.
I expect to be living in senior housing next winter, came close to moving there this last January. I expect me to be squeezed hard between rising cost of living, and fixed social security check of $628.00 per month.
I asked the original post to encourage members to look at what they can do with their life. For me my basic plan has been to not save money (It earns no interest) and buy/invest in food, clothing, and shelter. I do not expect the quality of my life to improve, but to slowly deteriorate. This is more depressing than I had expected. I think most of humanity will slowly realize that things will deteriorate slowly in a jerky way. I think depression which is already a major problem, will become epidemic. Enough cheer for now.

I have a different take on all this - if we continue to acrue debt with China and hand bailouts to those "to big to fail" and billions of devalued dollars to foreign countries who hate us. Add on the billions of individual purchases of gasoline and chinese products that only allow a one way direction of trade and we are headed down the bad path of England - and will be a totally screwed 2nd rate nation...
Yesterday the two Economists that won the Nobel peace price could not offer any solutions to the current state of mistakes we are making (regardless of party) Even the BBC a "Liberal Labour News" source is reporting we are out of our minds.
Lets just say I am frustrated and looking at buying a vacant property in Mexico :argue:
SD - A lot of what you said is pretty close to the core in my opinion. But a couple of things to consider.
1. Pensions are protected by the Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation, which is backed by the federal government. There are a lot of arguments one can post for and against but, for now, pensions that have been earned are covered regardless of what your former employer does. What is less secure, and we are seeing this everyday, are corporations that have decided to no longer offer a pension. If you are a 15 year employee then whatever you have accrued you will be able to draw but from today on you won't earn a pension. Instead, they are allowing some type of 401K package or some other investment vehicle in its place. I was very lucky to have had both.
2. I don't understand your thoughts on not saving money. What difference does it make if it doesn't earn interest? Are you saying that you are investing in other resources that can be convertible? If that's the case then I understand. Even then, I think it would be within your best interests to maintain some level of cash both to protect your convertible resources and to access if you needed it more quickly than you can convert items to cash. Just a thought.
I do get the declining health thing. Man do I get it.
WOO - China is very much a two way street. U.S. exports to China last year were worth almost $92 Billion. That was a 32% increase in exports to them. The top three exports were electrical equipment, power generation equipment and oil seeds worth about $11 billion each. Remember that China has a burgeoning middle class and that the country is undergoing tremendous growth that's putting a strain on an infrastructure that is not large enough to accommodate the needs of the new middle class. For the foreseeable future we will continue to export items that grow power generation, telecommunications and consumer goods to satisfy the needs of that middle class.
As I said, don't expect to see anything before the elections. There will certainly be feel good legislation but the real test, IMO, will begin in 2013.

Rick, I have no children. So dying with any money seems pointless to me. I see money as a "Alleged" store of value, for future needs. Needs like socks, boots, jackets, food, fuel. If I thought the cost of these needs was going to be 35% cheaper in five years, I would store money. However I expect them to cost much more in five years.
Now this gets to the OP, I said to myself, the goal is to live 10 to 15 more years, what do I need. Food, clothing, shelter. I figure Gold and Silver are as much of a risk as paper dollars, given my anticipated needs. I figure I now have all the clothing I will need for the rest of my life. Soon I will have all the shelter I will need for the rest of my life, and it will be exempt from property taxes.
This leaves only food as a need.
Your point is taken and it sounds like you've thought it out.
Don't forget the G20 is meeting this week-end in Paris. It will be interesting to see if the ECB is going to stand behind Italy's debt. It's also going to be very interesting to see if Germany will back Italy's debt as well. Especially after Burlusconi called Germany's Merkel a fat ***. It was actually a little worse than that but you get the picture. Dare I say it? Monday should be interesting.
