search and rescue story

so the pager went off two weeks ago, a nice sunday afternoon, 25yr old male diabetic sckitso(sp) wearing shorts, no point last seen.- (those are just the quick basics)
as i am injured i did not have my hands on this one too much, in the rear with the gear type of thing.
so days go by no tracks no scent, nights get cold and frosty and we have rain, after 10 days we finally get a point last seen, we bring in the helicopters and scent dogs, nothing.

So 14 days into the search, the brother finds the missing man, very healthy,nothing wrong with him at all, the father had a dream that he was sitting on a stump by water and the brother was able to walk to him and find him, also a man who competes with sar said that the day after the man was found he was able to take his tracking dog and walk straight to the spot where he was found in a couple of hours.

So what did the schizo son do while missing for two weeks? If he seemed fine and was healthy, obviously he hadn't endured much hardship. But he must've done more than sit on a stump by water.

what bothers me, well is a lot of things
1-after 2 weeks he was fine a 350 lb man with medical issues...claims he lived on dandelions and lilly pads
2-he was in shorts and we had frosty nights and rain
3-the competions search dog walked straight to the vics spot the day after the vic was found...even tho the provincial police dogs could not find a scent...this dog found a scent after 2 weeks???????????. i think it followed the brothers scent
4 speaking of the brother... i think that the vic came home and the family stashed him figuring he would be in trouble, the day after we call off the search he was found by the family..
bottom line is the subject is safe and home. there is no wasted time, even if he was safe at home it still gives the sar folks valuable training time whether the scenario is real time or not.
just wondered how many of you saw what i saw..

There was a lot to the story that didn't add up to me. You don't live on dandelions and lily pads for two weeks. I doubt the old boy was wading pond water in shorts on frosty nights to get to yellow pond lilies.

Reminds me of the reported suicide that we couldn't find the body and suspicious evidence of a suicide. "Victim" found three weeks later living the good life 300 miles in south FL. Fortunately we didn't use many resources for this one. And, he had a few warrAnts - soooprriiissse!

I hope that part of SAR training includes the proper calibration and use of a BS meter.

what pisses me off the most is how unprepared people really are when they go into the "woods" , every year in California or Oregon you see on the news how "two experienced hikers lost on the face of the mountain" , what they never tell anyone is that for about a week before there trek , the local weatherman has been warning the public about an impending snow storm especially in the higher elevations , and these experienced hikers never seem to figure it out and go ahead with there trek anyways , then there families cant seem to figure out why there missing , so the state or the feds spends millions of dollars searching for these two clowns , which to me is a waste of money , they knew the risks when they went out there, not only that but when you dont pay head to the weather and go a trek like that it should come out of your pocket all the expenses that search and rescue teams wastes finding your asses!

I concur with that. While any of us could find ourselves in a bad situation that we didn't necessarily prepare for we should at least be prepared enough to cope with it. I watched a TV show the other night about LE in Montana. Frontier something or other. Anywhoo, they were called to rescue a couple of hunters that had gotten lost in the mountains because a snowstorm erased the trail. Oh, it gets better. The only gear they had was a cell phone. Oh, it gets better still. They were on horseback. They spent two nights in the mountains with no food, water, or survival gear of any kind. They were lucky they came out alive.

I have hunting for a lot of game, in a lot of places, for a lot of years,..... seems the the ratio of dumasses in the woods is pretty much the same as in the general populace.
