Past weekend (Sept 30 - Oct 2)

This past weekend, I met a member of another forum I frequent. Me, him, his friend, and his father in law were to go out camping and practice some skills down in south Georgia. The father in law, Henry, is a former Special Forces member, a founding member of Delta Force, taught Sniper and Dive schools, and helped design the curriculum for the SERE school at Camp Mackall, NC. But at his age of 73, he wasn't able to camp with us as he had recently had an operation and was still weak. It was a sad affair as he apologized several times and told us that was the first time he has ever had to decline camping out as he started to pack his tent/poncho back up. Even though he didn't stay the nights out with us, he was sure to share in the action during the day.

We had a great time. We made our shelters, a solar still, cordage, a simple spring snare, a field chair, an atlatl and dart, fishing spear, a corsica raft, went over a couple of wild edibles, and even got 'stalked' by an armadillo making strange noises one night. Those are just the things I can remember of the top of my head!

We all worked hard so on the last night, I made them a nice meal in two dutch ovens. One filled with ham and various vegetables and seasonings and the other with a peach cobbler. They all enjoyed the meal as we told stories around the campfire. The next morning we all started packing up and getting ready to leave. I took my paracord down from the raft and was about to take it off of the chair, but they liked it so much they gave me some paracord to leave it there. It served us well. It could seat two and we also used it hang items off of the ground.

With everything we were doing, we almost forgot to take any pictures. I only managed three and two of which were when we were leaving.

Corsica raft. Henry said he has floated down rivers in a raft this size before and wouldn't hesitate doing it in this one.

Did you guys try out the raft?

No, the nearest body of water that we would have been able to get to was several miles down the road. I did use it to keep the water containers out of the sun and as a wind block at night.

Nice job. Sounds like you had fun and maybe learned a thing or two. At 73 and post surgery I'm glad he was able to share the day time with you.
