View Full Version : Need Help Choosing A Knife From M.E.C.

Hey Everyone. Just looking for suggestions. I'm going to M.E.C. this weekend and i've been searching on their site for the past week looking at their knives. I already have a gerber full serated knife but im more looking towards a Fixed blade non serrated this time. Im totally a newb on trying to pick and was even reading some of the peoples Reviews on the knives but im still struggling on trying to figure out what to get. I know usually price is a major factor sometimes, you get what you pay for sorta deal. Anyways the only ones i found there is the Frost River Knife (sorta lika a mora? i guess?) for $19.75 Canadian and a Gerber Big Rock Fixed Blade for $35.00 canadian. The fixed blades are more durable then folding knives aren't they? Since the folding ones can snap back past its folding point sometimes? I basically want a knife that would last sorta long a year or two i suppose mostly for camping but if it turns out good then one for my B.O.B. Thanks Everyone :D

What do you want to do with it when camping?
Will you use it around water or in water?
How large of a knife do you want or can you have based on your local laws?

have a good number of knives, only one didn't last a year I dropped it in the fire and didn't realize it until the next day. The other blades I have ether being used or in a pack because I like them or have been given away or garage sale sold.

We need to know how you want to use it. Camping is the activity you are taking it to. Food preparation, chopping wood, dressing a kill if hunting or fishing, the list goes on. How do you plan on using the knife?

Thanks for the fast responses. Well just the basic stuff cutting rope, using it for kindling/prepping for fire building food prep. I see videos of people using a baton or stick on the back end of their knife to split wood into kindling. And seeing that worries me with folding knives if ya put too much pressure on the handle if the knife wouldn't it snap at the hinge part? Thats whats making me lean more towards a fixed blade. I would be using it around water and in with canoe/camping trips. Local knife laws are pretty basic too. Can't be concealed, it's fine if its in a sheath in your belt though haha. Seems like ideal size is around 4inch though. But basically it just can't be concealed. Ideally i wouldn't mind having a good one for my b.o.b. But wanting to pick up one for sure this weekend for standard camping use.

If you're going to pound on the back with a baton or some other object, you might want to look into something that isn't tempered all the way up. If the back of the blade is a softer steel, it's less likely to chip or damage if you whack it.
I had one of these a while back. Can't for the life of me remember where I got it but I think it was a greenhouse worker's catalog. Or maybe I got it while actually working greenhouses in my first career.
Ugly knife. Worked like a charm though.

Yeah i seen the posts lol Just theres not much of a choice between their fixed blades at the store. The only places in my area to buy knives were walmart and canadian tire that i knew of and since i was going out of town and stopping into M.E.C i'd check out their knife selection that seemed more promising quality wise. Figured if ya's had a chance to choose one of their fixed blades what would ya's pick. But from what i seen sometimes it goes alot by users preference with knives. I guess ill just have to see what i come home with. Definatly glad to hear about the idea about softer steel on the back of the blade. My next knife i buy after this weekend will most likely be from an Online source especially after reading more into other peoples knife preferences in these forums :D. Anyways Thanks again everyone for your help. It's muchly appreciated. :D

Why don't you google the Mora HighQAlround Stainless or the Mora Craftline Stainless. Their numbers are 11672 and 11201 respectively. They are terribly inexpensive and I think a good first knife. Great for camping or skinning and they are stainless so your won't have to worry too much around water. You won't be doing any batoning with them though. I'm sure someone around you carries them.

Awsome thanks Rick. Had a hell of a time finding a spot where they sell them in my area. But i came across an american company that sells them cheaper then i can get them here and thats even including shipping costs heh. So cheap for good knives they'll make good stocking stuffers lol Thanks Dude!

I'm glad you found them. Knives are liking anything else. Everyone has their opinions. I'm sure there are a lot of folks on here that would have suggested something else. Since the knives are not that expensive you can try them and see if you like them. If they aren't right for you then you aren't out a lot of money but still have a good quality knife. If you like them and you want something bigger or something on the higher end of quality then you can save up your cash until you can buy it. In the meantime you have something to work with.

Rick, just figured out that the place i can order those mora knives. Well, they're from your Safe Zone LLC site haha. Great deals and picking up a few things from there :D Cheaper then getting them around the stores around here!

Most of us do not speak Canadian.

I agree with Rick, go with a Mora. It is a good first knife and if you decide you want something different (It is hard to find "better") you still have a good backup knife.

When you go past "Get a Mora" things get real confusing in the knife world.

I didn't steer you that way for you to buy from Safe Zone. You are free to but from anyone you want. I was simply trying to give you an honest answer that will serve you well, IMO.

haha Kyrat. At first i had to google YA'S. I thought it was another knife ya's were recommending hahaha. But to my demise it was a typo of mine. I guess it's almost like Ya'll (yaw) you all... haha It could've been worse. If i typed like i talk i would have alot of "eh's" in my sentences. Actually looking forward to picking one up now. But totally understand after the first knife if i want something different, it doesn't hurt trying others since people do have their own preferences. I thank everyone though for helping me out. I'm still gonna stop into M.E.C though, i just won't have to stop by the knife section anytime soon :D

hahaha Yeah i can see myself actually still stopping through it. Hell i spent about 3 hours going through the whole site the first time looking at it. Through all the different camping supplies even clothes. Putting in my order as we speak though for a mora :D Nice to see good para cord too. This whole week and weekend feels like im a kid again waiting for christmas haha

A Mora is a great place to start. After that, vanity will come a' calling for you to get something else. (more expensive)

A mora will do almost anything most people expect out of a mid sized fixed blade. Battoning is hard knife use and is best accomplished with a thicker and longer bladed knife.

If you are a real nationalistic dude you can even look at the Canadain Belt knife as your starting point.

They are fantastic knives for general purpose use. I have one and it is one of my favorites for real outdoor use as opposed to just wearing on the belt for show. That "odd" handle angle is perfect for long term work like processing meat, slicing and dicing for hours on end.

If you want to start with a cheap model Cold steel makes and good starter in this style.

Batonning is a last ditch emergency use of any knife, in spite of the current trends. Used to be if you wanted to baton you used a tool specially made for the job called a froe.

Used to be if you wanted to baton you used a tool specially made for the job called a froe.

Another great tool for wood splitting is a "To". I've used it quite a bit. I've even been known to use both in which case I would go "to and froe". (I swear I slay myself. This stuff is just too good!).

I agree with Sparky though. That Lehmans website has some pretty cool stuff. Some interesting items there, specially that water powered alarm clock. I wonder what else people could invent with that same kidna technology. Water powered radios would be nice.
