What Is the Cost?

How much have you spent on preparing over the years? I'm fairly new to this, I started about a year ago with buying tools and MRE's but I probably don't have as much money as most. Should I start buying as soon as I can, or stock up gradually?

I've chosen not to think of it in terms of how much I have spent. My preps (except for supplies with expiration dates) will all get used. It's just a matter of being ready for what comes along and just living while I wait. If I go out and buy 50 pounds of rice today - while it is part of my preps - it is also part of my normal food rotation. Other thing like gear are all things that I use along the way. Stoves, lanterns, tarps, rope, etc. all get used and are there in case of emergency. Financial preps are just part of getting ready to retire. IMO preparing gradually is the way to go. You will be surprised at how much you can accumulate over time without it being painful.

I look at Preps as an investment, as a place to store value or wealth. I figure food will go up relative to dollars, so I don't store dollars, I store food. Most people feel all warm & fuzzy if they have a large savings/401K/stock portfolio. I see that as a illusion that someone else controls. What makes me all warm & fuzzy is two years of food/well insulated cabin/ 5,000 .22LR cartridges that I control. Your mileage may vary.

Gradually for sure. Start with a week of extra food, and go from there a little at a time.

Go as you can afford it, make it a part of your system of doing things. And as all are saying, you will be suprised how quick things happen. And if the SHTF before you are at what you consider "fully prepared" you are still better off than alot of folks. Patience and planning

Like others, most of what I have is dual-purpose and not dedicated to prepping. E.g. ATV's and tractors are regularly used items around here so I wouldn't qualify those as a prepping item.

There are some things that are pretty dedicated to prepping (e.g. IBC totes for water storage) and a few extra sleeping bags and backpacks but those things will last long so I can find another use if/when needed or pass them on to the kids.
