Backpack Question Please Help

If yall had to pick one stlye and brand of backpack, for about 2-3 days of carry, what would it be? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

For what I do a external frame pack works best, Been using the same frame and pack for near 40 years. Buy the Best Boots and the best Pack system, your body well thank you, O'yea best socks. I've packed near 200 Pounds with my pack, near killed me, but no harm to the pack. I feel that the Belt and the straps are the key. :)

Hi,
I've worked in the outfitting business for the past sixteen years so I can tell you that they're a huge variety of packs out there. Internal frames are for scrambling, external frames are for heavy hauling. Size is based on what you'll be carrying. Those things can be figured out pretty quick. I purchased the Gregory Whitney pack at an REI scratch and dent sale a few years ago. It had been used (probably one or two trips) but it just had some smudges on it. It's a big pack - you can do a week or more quite easily. If you're not in a hurry, I would suggest the REI scratch and dent sales. They happen about 3 or 4 times a year, and you can get great deals on gently used materials. The pack I bought cost me $70, but it retailed near $300. We just bought a 6 person tent for under $100 that costs over $300 new.

I just got a USAF CFP-90 pack. This replaced the ALICE system in the 80s. Internal frame with very comfortable straps and waist belt. One thing I like a lot is that is comes with a separate "patrol pack". I keep all my main survival and SAR gear in the patrol pack for short trips. For long trips, I put all my long-term gear (clothing, tent, etc) in the large pack and the patrol pack goes on the top with clips. It's a good system for me.

Everybody's opinions will probably vary, but I'd go with the advice that both Hopeak & pgvoutdoors gave as they deal with people other than themselves more often than most of us. In the end, price, quality, fit, and the type demanded by the area you're going into will be the final deciding factors.:cool:

Well as far as the area and temp, Ill mostly be in hot, humid, rainy, swampy areas. Even in the winter, still very humid. Thanks everyone for the advice.

Get an ALICE pack. They're cheap, rugged and roomy. You can get a good quality one with external frame and kidney pad for under $100.

The type of conditions you are talking about, I would lean toward a light weight pack with a minimum amount of padding. This will lower the carrying weight do to the heavier pack cloth and padding holding a lot of water. The trade-off is that the lighter the construction the less durable the pack. This could be a problem if your going to do a lot of bush whacking. The ALICE Pack is a good choice if you keep your load to 20 lbs. or less on long halls. It's not very supportive for heavy loads over long distances. I speak from experience of carrying it for ten years. I'm an avid backpacker and own a large variety of packs, like tools in a tool box. Look at fitting your pack like fitting a good pair of hiking shoes, it will save you some grief in the long run. The more miles you have to carry it and the longer you have to carry it, will determine how good of pack you need. Then buy the best you can afford meeting that criteria.

Thanks pgvoutdoors, rick.......and rebel. I think even though you pointed out pgv that over long heavy halls in think brush it would not hold up well, I think the A.L.I.C.E would be the way to go. Being in Southern Louisiana right on the Gulf, alot of times, actually most of the time I get to where I need to go via waterway by canoe. And make various stops along the way to explore and hike. Im in West Tx now, but in less than 3 months I will be back in La for good. Thanks again guys......

The ALICE Pack will fill those needs quite well. Not much padding to hold water and the pack cloth is plenty durable for bush whacking. You can dump the frame when carrying lighter loads or when you are just doing some base camp exploring from your canoe landing. If you use the pack without the frame, make sure to fit it with a padded belt.

I don't think you can use the Large pack without the frame. You can the Medium.

Here is another choice if your are going to do a lot of paddling. I use these packs/dry bags up in the boundary waters. Super durable, waterproof, and nice straps and belts. I wouldn't do a lot of back packing with them but you can always put a day pack inside to use on your short base camp hikes.

Believe it or not, I use a camera bag (it has a middle pocket and two side pockets) for a day pack/fanny pack. It's just enough to keep my survival stuff and a bit more. I can drop it in the ALICE pack and then if I want to venture off for an hour or two I use the camera bag.
