This Wednesday, I am having a sharpest knife contest with the scouts. A prize for the winner. But, I am trying to come up with proper tests. They are suppose to bring a knife from home that they have sharpened. The knife has to either be in a sheath, or fold (ie, no kitchen knives). So, what are some ideas on how to test knife sharpness, that I can use to judge which is the sharpest? Thanks.

First: the shaving test (hair) (you can pretty mush expect someone to have a bald forearm after this one)
next: the rope cutting test
last: cutting shavings from the same sized block of wood (the finer the shavings the higher the points)(you could also time this portion)

My left index finger is so deformed from scars, you may think that's how I determine sharpness.

Shaving for the youngins might not work. A lot of people I have met will whittle oak to see if it retains an edge. I usually sharpen a knife so that it will slice paper. Here's a vid that TJ did on a knife I sent him.

Several easy texts.

The most common is paper cutting. An even slice through a sheet of notewook paper with no tears.

I would not go to full sized rope, these are scouts. Perhaps twine suspended with a weight. The knife must cut the twine with one blade stroke with only the resistance of the weight supporting it.

Then there is the ultimate in my view. The tomato test. If it will slice a tomato without preassure and not hang on the skin It is sharp.

BTW, how do you tell when your own knives are sharp? Perhaps you should use that test.

I would think about a class system too.

Classic pocket knives.

Locking folders

Straight blades

Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. I have a tiny SAK keychain knife that will shave, but it is not going to cut rope or even slice a tomato very well!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't think I will do the shaving part, these are scouts. Cutting paper is a good idea. So is the rope. The hardest part of the test will be making it quantitative. I need to put a scoring system in it.

Why not start with cutting paper to weed out the duller knives. Then , say, 3 cuts on rope , and back to the paper test. Repeat till you have a winner.

Cutting paper is my first test. Beyond that an edge must shave or I won't consider it acceptable. The highest level of test is cutting a hanging hair and whittling a hair into strips. But I'd be pretty surprised if any of your scouts can get a knife that sharp!:sorcerer:

Winter, I think cutting paper as a start will be a great weed out. I am worried that none of them will do that part. Putting different weights on a rope is a good measurable test. I still have today and tomorrow to get this worked out. I will make sure and tell you how it goes. Thanks again.

Cutting a hanging rope with one diagonal slice of a knife is a popular test. It is much harder to do than slicing paper. Not only does the knife need to be sharp, but enough force and proper technique need to be used. It is usually done with bigger knives. Here's a vid to show what I am talking about.

:crying:Good luck there FM. Over the years I have worked with scouts and their parents alot. Our church now has a group of scouts meeting there each week under the watchful eye of our asst pastor. From time to time he asks me to do something with the boys to help teach some type of art as he calls it. I've done fire starting,knot tying,knife sharping,shelter building and a few others since he's become the leader. I remember well when we did the knife sharping thingy. Worked with them one week on the way to do it then they brought back their knives the next week to be judged. Our system was simple. They were asked to cut paper. Then asked to cut through 3 pieces of of bailing twine not once but twice.(didn't think rope worked well for this age group) Then back to the paper. these steps were all timed and quality of cut was judged. Worked pretty well till one of the parents came to me and asked what I thought was wrong with his son's knife. I told him what I thought and he said"Man I thought I did a better job on it then that". :>) Like I said. Good luck.

Well, it ended up that 3 boys brought a knife. 2 of the boys don't have a knife to bring. None of them were that sharp, but they were able to slice paper. I put a string of twine with a weight for them to cut. They were able to cut the large weight, but not the smaller weight. I did a final paper slice and then judged the cleanest looking cut, which was hard because they weren't that clean. But, the winner got a big packet of Reece's peanut butter cups. This was followed by some sharpening demos. I will definitely do this again, maybe modify the test a little. With boy scouts, repetition is how they really learn. I will probably bring in my really sharp knives a few times before the next competition so that they know what they are shooting for.

Didn't have a knife!:scared: Why was that? I've read some horror stories of places where Boy Scouts aren't even allowed to have them. Did the kids simply not have them or were they not able to afford them? If it's the latter you should let us know- I'd have no problem donating some SAKs to kids so that they had a knife.

Their parents aren't broke. But they aren't wealthy. It is probably a combination of limited funds and worry about giving a kid a knife. However, one of my other leaders gave them some old old timer skinners that he had in his tool box. The skinners need some TLC, but other than that, a decent knife. I haven't heard anything from their mom (they are brothers), so either they didn't tell her, or she is OK with it. Next month I am doing an orienteering course at our campout. I might have a knife as a prize for the winner. I generally don't like giving a knife away out right. I want the boy to work for it and gain a sense of ownership.

A sensible notion- that gained for free will probably not be cherished as much. Still, let me know if you end up needing some knives. When my dad passed away this summer he had a staggering amount of knives. Although we haven't found them all yet, Mom said she & Dad were counting all the SAKs one day and writing them down in a notebook. They ended up finding over 330 SAKs!:eek2: And that's just SAKs. He had 50 JK Handmade, some DJ Custom, some Busses, more Buck than I could count, a couple dozen Spyderco, some Knives of Alaska, 50 or so Moras, the odd Dozier, some Cold Steel, a few RATs, a bakers dozen Bark Rivers, a Helle or two, one Falkniven...and lots more. My siblings took all we could use in a lifetime, the grandkids got some, neices & nephews, etc. There's still a ton left over. I'm pretty much custodian of them all, being the "knife guy" of the family. I'll keep most of them in memory of my dad but it would make hims smile to think of a bunch of kids using his beloved knives.:thumbup:

Thanks for working with these boys on skills that still are needed to be well rounded. These skills develope confindence. I agree, if you need some knives we need to know. One of the many things I can't beleive is that boys don't carry/have a pocket knife. Parents must not be much on the real out-of-doors or getting kids involved with chores and work. I too have read the stories of Scouts not being able to have sheath knives, axes, etc. Thank heavens I was a Scout in the early 60's when we were expected to have responsibility for our actions. We organized and went on hikes and campouts without adult supervison. Can't see that happening now!

I was a scout and the only time I didn't have my knife was at formal meetings, and before I had my knife card (don't remember what it was called). However I had it every outing and at most regular meetings. I will admit that my blade was in dismal shape, but none of the older scouts or leaders really knew their knife stuff. We never really covered sharpening. I don't ever remember being handed a stone to even try it on. I should get involved back in scouts and take what I've learned since and on this site and teach them, though I've heard my old troop isn't what it used to be.

BSA does not like sheath knives for some reason. The only time this is a problem is if we go to a BSA sponsored camp, and they pull one out in front of everyone. I, of course, don't share this opinion, so allow them. We have only been going to a BSA sponsored camp once every two years, so I figure they can suck it up for that week and live by the rules.
