View Full Version : Wet fire and Pine Needle Tea

Today, I tried two new things. One thing was a wet fire. Its has rained alot this past week and everything was pretty water logged. My approach was to use only what was available in my Bug-In supplies since my scenario was I was without all utilities. I stacked the wood in square formation and placed dry cut grass in the center and went with matches since I don't use them too often and never on a wet fire. After half an hour, I kinda had it going but it was pretty weak. My 3yo daughter then thought she should add a stick to it, knocked it over and put it out. I then restacked and used a firestarter brick in the center. That worked well. Followed by making fire, I decided to make Pine Needle Tea for the first time. Boy, that was delicious! My wife and daughter even enjoyed it. I'm sure that even tastes better in the woods.

My question with it all is what is a better way to start a wet fire? I carry a lighter and 25 matches in my packs, but have now added a firestarter brick to each of them. I don't put much faith in my usual tender to dry and ignite wet wood too well before it runs out.

Natertot - another thing that can really be a life saver is the tinder you carry with you. You stated that you added a fire starter bricks. There are a wide range of natural and man-made tinders available. Here is a vid on a few different ones that I did a while back.

We are wet here in WV as well. I used a tepee build with a feather stick up the center. All the wood was wet, at best damp. For tinder I used sort of dry grass and wood
shavings from the sticks I built the tepee. The tepee sticks were mostly pencil and smaller with a few 1" mostly sappy pine. I peeled the wet bark from the ones I could easily do and whittled the wet wood from the larger sticks to get to dry wood this is were I got my shavings. It was damp and misting on and off at the time. I packed the interior with dryish grass and also used grass for a nest. I used several matches and built two nests. I'm sure a fero rod would have gotten the grass started but would have presented the same challenges below.

I discuvered:

Once I got the nest blown to a flame I couldn't stop or the dampness of the grass would not allow a continued burn.
The nest needed was almost twice the size I usually do so I could get it to the TEpee opening and ignite the grass inside without getting too close to the flame.
I had to keep the nest and grass blown to a HOT flame until it entered the tepee grass and started the Tepee wood.
It had to be blown until the wood caught.

It seemed like 30 minutes start to finish from the match. I had three starts to figure out the wet grass needed constant breath, and a good ten minutes blowing the tinder to keep a HOT fire going until the wood caught. I had to lie down to do this

Other lessons.

Don't stand up while standing on the edge of your poncho.
don't let the hood of the poncho get too close to the flame.
Don't get your hair too close to the flame.
Don't stand up too quick.

4 hour burn and time for inipi.

i am from the adirondacks not familiar with your region however if availiable i have found yellow birch bark and hemlock bows (twigs) from under a younger tree (dried and dead but still attached off the ground relatively dry or damp) work very well the oil from yellow birch allows it to burn when wet almost instant fire (place bark peeled light and paperlike palm full amount underneath hemlock bows,twigs, take lighter or match light under birch bark cup with hand for protection from elements if the winds is right quite a pleasant natural inscense as well . a trade off for you perhaps i have wanted to try the tea myself as well as the inner bark for food if you don't mind how did you prepare boil time amount per cup etc.

Sometimes a small candle will help. You just need a sustained flame to dry things out. A blow torch is also a good asset.

Unless it has been raining pretty hard or for a long time items around the base of a large tree tend to stay dry. Beneath a fir tree and the under side of limbs. Look for any other sheltered area like overhangs. Sometimes just picking stuff up as you walk along will give you dry tinder by the time you are ready to build a fire. Never bypass usable items on the trail. You might not be able to find them when it's time to camp.

Rick and Crash: Nice write up and video. The fire I intially started with was the cabin type, but instead of having a teepee in the middle, I placed a few pieces across the top. A flat roof if you will. I believe that I carry sufficient tender after adding a firestarter brick. I also carry alcohol wipes, steel wool, and a small amount of old paper.

FinallyME: I do have a few propane blow torches at home. I know that it would get the wood hot in an isolated area, but I really don't see it drying out the wood too much without using a ton of gas. I geuss you would use it as a sustained flame like the candle? I do like that idea as I killed off about 20 matches doing this.

Umpknee: I used a canteen cup 2/3 full of water. Heated it up until it just barely started to boil. Then I added very green and fresh picked pine needles. I just added a good handful, no precise measurement. I then let the water get to a rolling boil for about five minutes then pulled it if the heat. Let it set for another five minutes, remove the needles and enjoy!

It just rained really hard again this morning, so around 5PM or so, I am going to give it another go. I will master wet fire!!!!:lookatme:

That is good sound advice. See what is around you now that you can use later. I need to work on that part of my logic a little better.

Torches and candles are pretty good firestaters along with foam, alcohol, WD40 or whatever you might make or buy. If you haven't been scared by gasoline before then you don't have enough experience to use it. If you have experience with gasoline then it's doubtful you will use it. If it's wet outside, I'll grab the small branches beneath a pine like most people do. Take the bark off because it's wet. Take the bark off all your wood that you can. I'll take a quick look around to see if there is any pine sap, birch, old berry bushes or cedar. Cedar is good because it splits better and burns quicker than any other wood. You can take a cedar stick and if you aim for the middle each time you can end up with many thin split pieces of wood very easily. The general rule of thumb is to pick up wood that is not touching the ground because that wood is wet. If you'll be back in an area latter, then pick up big sticks and logs and lean them against trees so they will be dry when you return. Also, try not to use wood that is too old because it will absorb water. The exception to the wood coming off the ground would be an old pine stump which burns very hot at any time if you knock off the rotten wood. When you do get your kindling keep it dry and don't set it down in the rain while you look for more. Set your extra wood close to the fire while the fire burns so your extra wood will dry. Cover your extra wood when you go to sleep. If you know your trees and wood you'll have a better fire. I think starting fires in the rain is the best way to learn the basics of burning wood.

Up here in MA. it's the paper birch tree bark that will get a fire going even when wet.If you can find some chaga even better.
Also the twigs of pine and pine pitch are awesome for small tinder.

EDR touched on another good point. That wood is only wet on the outside. If you can split it you'll have dry wood on the inside.

Yet another reason to join Wilderness Survival site ! I can't believe I never thought of peeling sticks !!!! Have carried a trusty knife for 15 years or so. I appreciate this thread. g.
