View Full Version : How Much Food Do I Need?

Rick

We all know that it takes 1 gallon of water per person per day to stay healthy. That's drinking, cooking and hygiene. But how much food does the average person need?

A rule of thumb that you can use is to multiply your current weight X 12. That will give you the number of calories PER DAY that you need to consume to maintain your weight. You just did the math didn't you? Shocked? Yeah, that's a lot of calories. Reduce it by 500 calories per day and you'll lose one pound per week. Reducing it by 1000 calories per day will cause you to lose 2 pounds per week.

Obviously, there are a lot of variables. The time of year, your metabolism, how active you are and whether you are a man or a woman. But all that aside, it gives you a starting point to look at.

How does 800 pounds of grain convert to whether you are taking in the right amount of calories? How does storing 119 pounds of fats equate? You're goal should be to store the right amount of calories not just the right amount of stuff. You could have all the legumes stored you could ever eat but if you can't consume enough calories then you'll begin to lose weight. I would suggest you convert your stores to calories and then determine if you have stored the right stuff in the right amount. Just my thoughts.

That's an excellent way to think about the type of food we store.
I remember being shocked at reading the ingredients/calories in a Datrex bar until I realized how many calories and nutrients it takes to maintain our health & weight.

Since I'm a vegetarian, I've documented the nutritional value of all my bulk stores to make sure I'm taking in the right amt. of protein, fiber, fat, vitamins, etc. This isn't hard to do because all the small bags and containers list the ingredients per serving. This way you can even go as far as roughly planning a meal ahead of time. Heck, get the kids involved and they'll get to practice some math skills without even knowing it.

Thats a good way to estimate your needs...man can't live on chips alone.
Seems that these days the amount of calories are being cut down in a lot of processed foods for health? reasons.
Don't know if that is good or bad.

Part of the problem is that a lot of people are over weight and used to consuming large amounts of calories per day....and losing the skills to prepare non processed foods like grain and your own veggies, meat.
I comsume more calories per day than my number, don't gain any weight.......so make me kinda wonder if I would loose weight based on that 500 cal number.

So I have to agree that number of calories is important, especially in a high labor/stress situation.....but proper nutrition needs to have a mix of all the food groups.

I see alot of freeze dried prepackaged foods seem to be high in carbohydrates, lots of pasta, beans, cheese foods...and seem all highly processed.

As in the old days in winter months vitamin c is going to be hard to come by....at least in natural foods if the global food delivery system is interrupted.

Learning to gather, grow, forage, hunt, eatable natural foods is also a part of the equation.

Man can not live on pine needle tea alone."For Long time anyway"
This is an interesting thread. .

Here is the standard quote about nutritional facts on MRE's

Each MRE provides an average of 1,250 calories
(13% protein, 36% fat, and 51% carbohydrates) and
1/3 of the Military Recommended Daily Allowance of
vitamins and minerals. A full day's worth of meals
would consist of three MREs.

Three no Maybe Two And some "PNT"

The math 1,250 X 2 = 2,500/12 = 208.3

I am 6'4" tall and weigh 230lbs. I am an active person

I could go,and have gone a long way on two MRE's a day

Plus some Pine Needle Tea. I seemed to maintain weight Okay.

That's my two cents worth

God Bless

-and good on ya rick, could you maybe change the numbers for those of us who use the metric system......?

*long live the metric system*

...and that'll be 4L (3.78-ish) of water and X body weight (kg) by 6 (or 5.89-ish)

Hey! Just because everyone in the world uses metric except us don't think for a minute that we're gonna change. It confuses the enemy.

"Haji, the map says 2 miles to the infidels hideout. How far is that?"
"Let me see. There is 1.6 kilometers in a mile. Carry the 2. Divide by.....Over there somewhere."

It is hard to freeze dry animal fat. It is also easier to freeze dry processed food. Just sayin....economics is a major factor as to what is in the food.

You can find online calculators that do the converting for you. And, a calorie is metric. Just remember that a food calorie is actually a Kcal.

Well, Rick, I stock food according to the P rule. It also happens to be the same rule for determining how much explosive to blow up a bridge. P for "plenty". When I get to your age, I might start looking to see if I have enough, and use your calculations. But until then, I just need lots.

LOL, that's kinda what I was thinking....and the other thing is some of that freeze dried stuff is not real appealing....so hunger has to enter in to it.
As a "older person, and being used to keep my "stuff" straight, sometimes I would have a problem with keep track of the numbers constantly.
"Hey don't touch that bag, it will screw up my inventory....I just got it all sorted out".

I will agree that by doing this cal, on what you do have is a really good idea to insure that you have a balance, and can fill in the weak spots.

I'm glad you clarified what the P stands for. You really had me worried there for a minute. By the time you get to my age the world will have ended ... twice. So you'll really need 2X plenty.

I think canned jams can provide vitamin C and whatnot. done right they should be good for years. Cabbages also are a good source, so I learned from reading old sailing novels where they would fight scurvy. Cruciferous vegetables are a wee bit more tolerant of cold than your lemons and limes.

I wonder if pickling preserves vitamin C? I'm not sure.

We don't have to worry or pretend we're back in the 1800s though, we have things like solar panels. A solar panel, a freezer, a battery. That will vastly expand your ability to hoard food no matter what. I suppose if one lived near moving water you could even get one of those small water turbines, or a little wind turbine if you live in a windy area.

There are of course strains of RICE as well that are vitamin fortified. Better to hoard them than white rice. I've bought this purple rice (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RHUYAW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=everythingshak06&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399369&creativeASIN=B000RHUYAW) that is good. It isn't the beta carotene fortified "golden" rice, but it has the same antioxidants as found in blueberries. Tastes good.

Chris

You could also, of course, just hoard vitamin c (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002BB5V0/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=everythingshak06&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399369&creativeASIN=B0002BB5V0).

This is straight out of Cody Lundin's book "When All Hell Breaks Loose"

"For a man: Multiply your height in inches by 12.7" (write this figure down and consider this number A)
"Multiply your weight in LBS by 6.2" (write this down too consider this number B)
"Multiply your age in years by 6.8" (write this down too and call in number C)

Now just add A+B+655 - C and this is how many calories you burn doing absolutely nothing sitting on your butt all day (called basal metabolic rate or BMR).
If you plan on being very active (very active is defined as 1 hour of intense physical activity 6 or 7 days a week) multiply the BMR by 1.5. Multiply the BMR by 1.4 if planning on being moderately active.

Wow! I'm burning more energy than the sun!

mh2012
09-16-2011, 04:44 PM
The book also breaks down how many grams of each macro-nutrient you need based on your BMR number (for these equations use your BMR after factoring in your level of physical activity as described in the latter part of my first post).

For protein: Take active BMR number and multiply by 0.15 then divide by 4, this will be how many grams of protein needed in a day

For Carbs: Multiply active BMR by 0.55 and then divide by 4, this will be the grams of carbohydrates needed in a day

For Fat: Multiply active BMR by 0.3 and then divide by 9, grams of fat needed per day

The first search hits for survival nutrition is a tale of someone who literally starved to death on a full stomach after crash landing in WWII. Eating rabbit. A diet of rabbit (45oz/2200 Calories/day) is seriously deficient in A, C, D, E, K, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, carbohydrates, fiber, Omega-s3, mono-unsaturated fat, calcium, manganese, and sodium.

I think canned jams can provide vitamin C and whatnot.
Nope. You would need to consume 100% of your calories from jam to barely get the meager RDA for Vitamin C.

1 pound of freeze red (not green) bell peppers(around $16), however would supply the RDA of Vitamin C and Vitamin A for 60days. These are two of the nutrients that tend to be sadly lacking in most shelf stable foods. 3oz of dehydrated onions or 3 cups of canned greens will supply one day's RDA of Vit C. 1.2oz of canned pumpkin, 1/3 cup canned carrots, or 0.26oz of dehydrated carrots will provide one day's Vit A.

And those are just the ones that are conspicuously lacking on the label. 0.52oz flax seeds will provide the RDA of Omega-3s.

You are lucky to get even the woefully inadequate RDA of 400IU from food, let alone the 4000IU recommended by those who study vitamin D. Sunlight over much of the body at noon will provide enough but this is harder in bad weather, high latitudes, or under quarantine conditions; a 5000IU supplement should be available (or one 50000IU every 10 days).

It would take 30oz/day of canned ham, about 3oz of canned sardines, or 5oz of non-fat dry milk (before reconstitution), to get the RDA for B-12. Organ meats and some fish are good sources.

Here is a sample diet of storable foods that meets all common nutritional requirements. It includes 1/4 can of sardines and 1/4 can of greens which can be taken as 1 can every 4 meals. Cooking losses not accounted for.

Hence, the need for a balanced diet. You would probably die eating just one item no matter what it is. Well, pizza but that doesn't count. You can eat that the next morning cold. Oh, and beer. I had an uncle that lived on beer for 50+ years.

There's nothing wrong with a vegetarian diet. As noted, it is also very healthy. In fact, it's pretty darn good. To make it exceptional just add bacon, beef, chicken. etc.
