This is the message I sent to Ka-bar

I was issued my Ka-bar in 1961 when I became a BAR man. I was medically retired in 1971. My issue Ka-bar has finally given up the ghost. I have always stated that there are other knives that can do somethings better then my Ka-bar, but my Ka-bar does everything good enought.

My question is. Is the new Kabar of the same quality and specs as the one issued me in 1961?
I am hearing rumors that they are not.

The answer I received.

Sir,

The original KA-BAR that was first manufactured during WWII was made the same way that all the KA-BARs in the years after have been made. Aside from minor modifications (ex: manufacturing the blade without the top serration), the original KA-BAR is still made the same way. Okay, you didn't really expect the message to go like...

The original KA-BAR that was first manufactured during WWII was the best. All the KA-BARs in the years after have been crap. Aside from minor modifications (ex: removing most of the carbon from the blade), the original KA-BAR is nothing like the one you were issued. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not contact me.

50 years out of a knife? I guess that they don't make them like they used to. Whatever happened to quality?

I use a 1918 bolo as my large field knife. A good knife lasts forever with proper care.

Let us get a review of the new KaBar when you get it. I know I have been interested in one and would like to hear genuine feedback. Maybe it is just me, but I don't always trust the reviews on sites.

I have the marine style fixed blade, the smaller version. It does not see as much dirt time as I'd like but when I feel much mor comfortable with it than my mora. It just feels so solid.

Beans, where is your old one? There's no reason it has to be done. If the blade is good, you still have a knife. I'd retrofit it for ya if you pay shipping.

I appericate the offer, but the thiner blade from sharping, the chipped point that has been reshaped with a file, the bloodied handle, the dried out leather handle that is missing a leather washer or two are all memories. So I think I will keep it as it is.

Its history.

It was worn in Beirut Lebanon by a differnt friend of mine
It has traveled over most of the western half of the US and spent many a night at a campfire with me

It has accompanied me on many a prospecting trip and Ghost town vist.

I enjoyed reading about you and your knife. It is good to see there is still some people who really value a good knife because they have used it and it has stood up to the test. I have had a couple that can not be replaced because not only they are great knives but have been there and done that with me.

Keep up the good work. Hope that new Ka-Bar is all you except, I'm sure it will be.

my grandfather who taught me most of my knowledge on indian ways and bushcrafting gave me his k-bar when i was 12, i still got it, it's never..never.. ever let me down. also staying with his theory, if it's not broken, dont piss with it. i just recently bought a new all black, full tang, carbon sheeth k-bar and a machete style k-bar and use them alot, rough, and hard, besides the somewhat dull blade they had i absolutely love them, not one problem, or thought of them letting me down. hell i cut down a 6 inch thick tree just to see what it would do, cuts like butter after a respectable sharpening. i actually wondered if he would have respected the new blade as he did his old one, which he saved his life a few times. it's my most prized possession. its like hes out there with me still taking down a buck and warming by the fire. r.i.p. gramps. just my opinion on the new k-bar fellows, but actions speak for them selves, if you dont like it i'll buy it, lol.

I Bought A New KA-Bar A Few Years Back. Have Never Had An Issue With It. Didn't Have It Snapped Into The Sheath One Day, Fell Out When I Picked My Bag Up And Hit The Curb And Bounced And Was Fine.(Thank God No Nicks On The Blade, You Know My Sharpening Skills) Even Used It To Dig A Few Small Holes. The Pommel Works Great As A Lite Duty Hammer. I Never Had The Heart To Take My Grandfather's WWII Issue KA-Bar Out, But The New One Has Never Failed Me Of Anything I Ask Of It.

I got my new one. touched up the edge and it is now residing in my vehicle ready for use. It sure is purty when set beside the old one.

I put them together so the old one could share its experience/adventures with the new one. That way it could know what to expect in its lifetime.

I plan on sharing some of my adventures with it when we are working together.

Bonding will come in time.

I would bet good money you won't be taking the new one to some of the places you took the old one. That new one won't draw a military pension like the old one either. They can talk but the new one can only dream and chart its own course in life.

Be careful Beans, the ones they sell on the civilian market have a BS meter installed in the metal pommel cap.

Never worried about that. Always seems to be enough BS to go around anyway.

No fancy engraving, ETC just a plain working Ka-bar.
