Need ideas---Log

Had to cut down a Black walnut tree as it was growing and overhanging my drive along the lower field.
Grew straight up about 8+ ft then started growing out toward the light....hense the problem.

I did salvage the 8ft straight section, about 10' dia with about a 6" hard wood (very dark) center.

First thought was to call around and see if anyone would buy it, ...or at least saw it up, I'm thinking that the heart wood might make a good gun stock blank....after a few/many years of drying it out.
Saw it up green?...let it dry?...bark on/bark off????

Any thoughts on this?

The rest of the tree has been chunked up for fire wood.
So, now if I split it up around and save the heart wood,....maybe someone wants it for knife scales?
Or the log? LOL.

It would make cool knife scales or gun stock, especially a piece that had both the light and dark colored wood. I also thought of Doug and his bowl making.

It's too bad everyone is so far away, LOL I don't know what it would cost to ship a log.

I would suppose the scales would have to be real dry as well.

bow stave. If you can keep it dry till the bark seperates, you can use it to tan / dye skins. From what I understand it is not one of the trees you want to chip up for mulch as it contains something toxic to other plants.
firewood is probably going to be your best bet. Cold weather is just around the corner. We've already put up 2 cords for grandma...

Yeah drying it without it cracking is the key. One of my customers has a huge lathe in his garage where he does all sorts of beautiful wood turning (bowls, goblets, etc.) He cut the "chunks" to the basic shape and then waxes them (paraffin). Because of their size and thickness he lets them dry for about two years. I would imagine smaller pieces would dry much faster. The key (IMO) is for them to dry very slowly.

I have saved log sections of an English Plum (purple color) it isn't as large But....

I left the bark on and sealed the n=end with melted bees wax The checking was minimal. I will use it for small boxes and perhaps Knife scales or sound board for a stringed instrument.

The other option is to locate some one that has a mill. The Woodmizer is a portable mill that some folks ravel short distances with and mill at your site.
Google Saw Mill operators WI YOUR LOCATION. ask around.. PErhaps the local woodmizer distributer would have a list of operators.

The wood should be stacked on billets as level as possible. a good miller would be able to determine how long to season the log if at all before milling. He would also be able to determine the rough milled thickness that will result in a machine plained thickness.
