As soon as I leave the office I'm grabbing my son for a primitive trek in the woods thru Monday morning.

My son is a Weblo this year and weekend of 9/17 is the first Scout campout of the year.

9/24 starts deer season and we're camping out the night before to get at them early.


Looks like I have a lot of making up to do for the wife and daughter weekend 9/10, but I love them too!

This first little trip didn't go so well. Bad weekend all around. We haven't had rain here in over 3 weeks. Forecast had a chance of rain TUESDAY. It came Saturday instead. We had a very primitive camp set up with a tarp as shelter. I strung rope between 2 trees as a horizontal to create an "A" frame, then roped an staked all four corners.

We set up about 50 yds from a wet weather stream. This stream at it's wettest is about 3' wide. Flash flood and I'm moving camp to higher ground and water was standing where the camp was. Lightening struck a tree about 100 yds from us and started a fire. I was surprised how long that fire lasted under that downpour. Today is Tuesday and it's still raining. We wound up leaving the woods early enough Sunday morning to make it to Church with my wife and daughter. We were scheduled to come home about noon or so Monday. We sat under the shelter A LOT.

Did successfully make a fire Fri evening with a magnifying glass. Saturday I made one with my magnesium stick and my new ferro rod. On the fires Saturday I did have to dip into my stash of prescription bottles and use some cotton balls soaked in vaseline. I don't think I could have got a fire going without them.

Sunday evening my wife and I got into a horrible argument. We'll be married 16 years this Nov and had maybe 5 arguments and it's a stretch to call some of them arguments. Sun night was bad and I still don't know why she got so mad at me. I guess it'll blow over.

The difference between sons and wives on camping trips?

Wife: This is all your fault why didn't you check the weather. What do you mean draging us out here to drown?

Son: Wow that was fun! Did you see that tree explode! Geese Dad anyone can camp in good weather, we made it through a hurricane!

"Anyone can camp in good weather!" became my son's motto after we camped through a tornado infested weekend that involved the access road turning into a 12' deep river and trapping us miles from the middle of BFE. We made it, and he still looks at that weekend as a rite of passage.

My wife and daughter didn't go with us. Our daughter is only 21 mos. We got back from Church, ate lunch, watched two movies and we got into a small spat over nothing that turned into a huge mega fight. We don't do that. I don't know what set her off.
