Hello Everyone! :D

My name's Blake i'm 30 years old and from Ontario, Canada. Current job is in retail sales. I don't have any first aid training, cpr or even survival. Very little outdoor experience other then a bit of camping here and there. So, i'm a total novice and newbie haha. I am interested in learning alot more though. Just recently started on working on food storage and my familys disaster prepardness kit. I picked up some airtight storage containers and enough bottled water for atleast 3 days drinking/personal use for my family. Other then that. It's just a start. Looking to be more knowledgeable about storage and even learn some new skills that i could use if any disasters or whatever happens my way. It's always good to be prepared. I just don't really know where to start from where im at now. I also wouldn't mind extending the length of my prepardness kit for a longer term more then 3 days. I have been reading some stuff through out these forums, so i'm open to learn or research anything. Thanks everyone! :D

Welcome, Blake. My guess is you probably have a lot more preps than you know you have. Unless you share hot water utilities with neighbors you probably have a hot water tank in your house or apartment. It's probably a 30 gallon if an apartment but could be 40 or even 50 gallons. That's clean drinking water. If anything happens and your water stops just shut off the water so the tank can't back siphon, turn off the power if it is electric (and you still have power), drain your water from the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Once you've drained a half liter or so then open the pressure relief valve on the top of the tank so you don't create a vacuum in the tank as you draw water from the bottom.

Just figure out what size your hot water tank is (it's generally listed on the label outside the tank) and you can calculate how much water it will provide you. Each person needs 1 gallon per day for drinking, cooking and hygiene. So add up the number of people and divide the gallons in the hot water tank by the sum of the people. 50 gallons / by 2 (two people at 1 gallon each per day) = 25 days that you can live on just the water in the tank. Look around and I'll bet you'll be surprised what you could use if things went south.

And don't be concerned that you are a newbie. We were all newbies at some point in our lives. We are all still learning and helping each other.
