I read an article on this guy as well. He seems like a tool bag. The mom seemed pretty ticked according to the article,too. What I don't get is the park rangers saw the guy attempting to do it and the next day is when he actually did it. Why didn't the rangers do something the first time? As a person who has training and works in the security/law enforcement sector, I would have hemmed up the grandpa on day one. JMHO.

We need more people like you who are not afraid to get involved when something doesn't seem right.

I read an article that painted the picture of mom different , she was concerned (naturally) but had said grandpa took the kids to el salvador and the amazon and several other places hiking as well,the kids never complained to her about it even when they were home, but who knows, I really dont know what was going and niether do the rangers , I mean if Im in the supermarket (I was a cop) and I see mom giving jr a spanking for taking candy , Im not arresting her , just because I see this , grandpa slapped the kids ,beat them up , they claim the kids didnt have any water or food (for 18 miles) ,of rough high desert terrain , these kids are ready to join the MARINES if they could handle that without water or food! I highly doubt that!!

Something smells fishy here. Hikes with Dad were long, hot, and complaining meant a butt cuttin'. Didn't hurt me none. In fact it gave me a love for the outdoors and made me perfectly comfortable in conditions bordering extreme. Perhaps leaving a 9 yr. old boy with a shotgun on my first deer hunt alone under a tree in 10deg. temps from sun up to sundown would be considered neglect in todays world. I didn't have snacks or water. I could go on and on. It isn't how I raise my daughter but if I had a son it is exactly how I would raise him, just like Dad did. When we visited the Grand Canyon, I had a birds eye view from atop the bunk in the cabover camper along the winding canyon roads, I bet that would be against the law today.
